This was the last of six ‘Mersey Beat Showcase’ concerts, a format devised by Brian Epstein which consisted of one-off shows featuring his stable of artists. The first took place on 7 March 1963.
Also appearing at Romford’s Odeon Cinema were Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, The Vikings with Michael London, and Gerry and the Pacemakers. The compere was Vic Sutcliffe.



The line-up was something of a coup for pop fans, with The Beatles, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, and Gerry and the Pacemakers occupying the top three places in the singles charts that week.

Unlike the others Mersey Beat Showcase nights, this was promoted by John Smith rather than NEMS Enterprises. Additionally, five further dates in the series, planned for 17-20 and 23 June, were abandoned by Epstein.

On The Beatles’ second night of performances in Melbourne, Australia, they gave two concerts at the city’s Festival Hall.
Their repertoire during this part of the world tour consisted of 10 songs: I Saw Her Standing There, I Want To Hold Your Hand, You Can’t Do That, All My Loving, She Loves You, Till There Was You, Roll Over Beethoven, Can’t Buy Me Love, This Boy and Long Tall Sally.

The Beatles’ final two shows in Melbourne, Australia took place on this day.
In the afternoon George Harrison went driving in an MG in the Dandenong Mountains with tour organiser Lloyd Ravenscroft. Concerned with more important matters, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr had their hair cut in their hotel, the Southern Cross.

This was The Beatles’ last of three consecutive nights of shows in the city’s Festival Hall, Each night they gave two concerts, which were enjoyed by a total of 45,000 people.

Cameras from the Australian Channel 9 recorded the sixth and final show of the Melbourne leg of the world tour. It was screened on 1 July 1964 as an hour-long special, The Beatles Sing For Shell, named after the oil company which sponsored the broadcast.

Nine of The Beatles’ Melbourne performances were included in the show: I Saw Her Standing There, You Can’t Do That, All My Loving, She Loves You, Till There Was You, Roll Over Beethoven, Can’t Buy Me Love, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally. During Long Tall Sally, a male audience member rushed onto the stage to shake John Lennon’s hand.


The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein had initially agreed to allow Channel 9 to show just 12 minutes of the performance. However, after watching the recording an hour after the show he had a change of heart and increased the limit to 20 minutes.

In the end 22 minutes of The Beatles were included, the rest of the hour being footage of Australian and international performers. The only song from the set not broadcast was This Boy. Full bootleg recordings exist of both concerts from this day.

In Studio 5 of the BBC's Maida Vale Studios in London, The Beatles record the fourth "Pop Go the Beatles" radio program. This will be the last of the series, but it will be subsequently extended. The Beatles perform the songs I Saw Her Standing There, Anna, Boys, Chains, P.S. I Love You, and Twist and Shout. The program is broadcast on June 25, and the featured guests are The Bachelors.

The Beatles are photographed by Dezo Hoffman during a London recording session for a "Pop Goes the Beatles" radio program, while dining at a restaurant, and in Delaware Road doing a little clowning around to celebrate Paul McCartney's 21st birthday on the following day.

The Beatles, in Australia on their first world tour, perform two shows at Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia. The second show is filmed for an hour-long television program, "The Beatles Sing for Shell," which is broadcast on July 1. (Shell Petroleum was the program sponsor).

The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios, London).
The song Yesterday is completed with the overdubbing of an additional vocal track by Paul McCartney and of the string quartet brought in to augment the track. Needing a song for Ringo Starr to sing to replace the failed If You've Got Trouble, The Beatles select Act Naturally for Ringo's vocal contribution on the Help! album. They record 13 instrumental track takes of Act Naturally, and Ringo's vocal (along with Paul's backing vocal) is overdubbed onto the 13th take. Then The Beatles record the song Wait, in four takes. Wait will not be included on the Help! album; it is included on the following LP, Rubber Soul.
