ISE CULTURAL FOUNDATION is pleased to present the exhibition, "Grapefruit: Yoko Ono in 1964". The first survey of this kind, the exhibition will give an in-depth and comprehensive look at a pivotal year in the career of this internationally acknowledged artist. In 1964, two significant events took place: the collection of her instruction pieces, in the book Grapefruit, an important foundation for Ono's body of work; and the artist's decision to move back to New York after two years of living and working in Japan. Looking back at her career, in 1999, Ono explained that many of her works were influenced by the fact that she is a woman. However, in her recent exhibitions, Ono's early works have been assimilated into the masculinist languages of Conceptualism and Fluxus. Except for Cut Piece, her gender doesn't seem to count among the works made before the gains won by the feminist movement in the 1970s. The exhibition's intent, therefore, is not to impose a certain interpretation on Ono's art, but to enable spectators to examine the various cultural, social, and autobiographical elements on display-including her autobiographical article "My Love, My Conflict," first published in 1974 in a magazine called Bungei Shunjы-and thus explore her works in her own words as well.

In keeping with the original spirit of 1964, the artists Nancy Hwang, Hiroko Kikuchi, and the artist collective Praxis, respectively, will interpret Ono's instructions for Touch Piece, Cut Piece, and Water Piece on three consecutive Saturday evenings during the exhibition.

"Grapefruit: Yoko Ono in 1964" is curated and organized by Midori Yamamura as a part of ISE Cultural Foundation's emerging curator series. Yamamura is a Ph.D. candidate in art history at CUNY Graduate Center. The idea for the exhibition arose out of a seminar on "Women's Art / Feminist Art" taught by Professor Anna C. Chave. The exhibition would not have been possible without Yoko Ono's generous cooperation and permission to utilize her materials. Helping shape the exhibition were Jon Hendricks, Professor Chave, Kevin Concannon, Luis H. Francia, Nancy Hwang, Akiko & Taka Iimura, Reiko Tomii, Midori Yoshimoto, and White Noise. It is partially funded by the Japan Foundation, as part of a series of events marking the 150th anniversary of U.S. Japan relations, with fiscal sponsorship by the Asian American Writers' Workshop. "Grapefruit: Yoko Ono in 1964" will remain on view until May 15, 2004.

Hell in Paradise” marks the sixth release from ONO's successful remix series that has paired the pioneering and controversial icon with an international array of innovative and influential dance / electronic pioneers (including Pet Shop Boys, Danny Tenaglia, Felix Da Housecat, Superchumbo, Murk) that have reinterpreted selections from the seminal artist's ground-breaking 30-year oeuvre.

With the releases "Open Your Box," "Kiss Kiss Kiss," and the #1 Billboard Club Play chart-topping smash "Walking On Thin Ice," ONO has been enjoying a remarkable musical career renaissance that has not only garnered international critical acclaim, but commercial cross-over success - a surprising feat for an artist who recently turned 71!

"Hell in Paradise," from the 1985 Starpeace, is redressed for 21st Century success with mixes by the omnipotent Murk Boys, the resquisite Orange Factory, the Iberian tribal duo Chus & Ceballos, and scene stirrers Minge Binge.

With “Every Man/Every Woman…” the pop culture icon

Yoko Ono has rewritten one of her songs and given it new lyrics that give a boost to the cause of gay marriages, reports the Associated Press. "Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him" has been converted to dance mixes for "Every Man Has a Man Who Loves Him" and "Every Woman Has a Woman Who Loves Her." The mixes are gaining ground in the Billboard charts.
“I should think that people would be more interested in politics and all that is happening, rather than two lovebirds who are looking to wed. I think it’s very nice that in an age when love is so scarce that people are willing to gamble on getting married,” said Yoko Ono.

Bet you didn't know that Yoko Ono has released over 10 albums and all have gone gold.

Well, she'll soon be back in the club charts after the massive success last year of a remix of her track "Open Your Box." It reached number one on the billboard dance charts.

Now we can look forward to a whole new album of remixes of her most famous works including "Walking On Thin Ice. "

She has decided to rename herself simply Yoko.

She told me: "I have decided to drop the last name as I see this development of my dance persona as the start of a whole new me."

The 71-year-old is also planning some in-house club appearances too.

This album will also feature a duet by Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliot performing "Wake Up Everybody" produced by BabyFace. This is a remake of a 1975 song by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. - Eliot Wien.

"Genocide in Sudan"

"System of a Down, Bad Religion, Jill Scott, Jurassic 5, Thievery
Corporation and Yoko Ono are just a few of the artists donating tracks to
"Genocide in Sudan," a benefit compilation CD due in November on
Waxploitation Records. The album is intended to raise awareness of the
ongoing humanitarian crisis in that country. Label honcho Jeff Antebi said
the CD project has two goals: to urge the United Nations to declare a
genocide in Sudan, and to benefit relief organizations working there. All
proceeds from the CD will go to the United Nations Refugee Agency and
UNICEF..."
