The Cavern's 50th Anniversary!

The Cavern Club opened its doors for the first time on January 16th 1957. Initially it was a jazz club which was gradually infiltrated by skiffle groups, followed by blues bands and eventually Beat groups, playing a brand of rock n' roll which became known as Merseybeat. Between 1961 and 1963 The Beatles made almost 300 appearances. From 1963 through till 1973, many of the great names of popular music appeared at the Club.
The Club closed in March 1973 and didn't open its doors again until 1984.
Rebuilt and remodelled, the club re-opened in April 1984. It was not until the 1990's that the Club once again became a live music venue. The Cavern celebrated its 40th birthday in 1997 although for many cynics it could not replace the original. This cynicism came to an abrupt end on 14th December 1999, when Paul McCartney performed his last gig of the century on the Cavern stage, giving the Club his personal endorsement and the world the recognition it truly deserves; living up to it's title 'The Most Famous Club In The World'.

4го января 2007го года в клубе состоялся концерт ливерпульской кавер-группы Blue Meanies. Информации о концерте не было на официальном сайте клуба, поэтому те, кто попал туда в этот день случайно могут считать себя счастливчиками:)

Следующая фотография проходит под кодовым названием "Что старый, что малый"

На backstage в этот день зажигали группы с ливерпульских окрестностей с более современным репертуаром.

Больше всех радовалась группа ноозеландских битломанов, с большим воодушевлением помогавшая Blue Meanies исполнить Hey Jude (и много других замечательных песен).

После концерта не очень уставшие, но очень довольные cavemen разошлись.... в бар.

Кстати, 7го января там же состоялась вечеринка, посвященная дню рождения Элвиса Пресли, в которой принял почетное (и посильное) участие бывший член группы The Undertakes(забыла как зовут), а также некий персонаж по имени Wessley Presley и еще большое количество разнообразных исполнителей, которых нам, к сожалению, не удалось дослушать до конца, потому как last train to London.

а я когда в первый раз услышала о том, что у Каверна 50 летний юбилей (было это 9 января) я подумала, а почему так мало-то))) потом оказалось, что я просто считать разучилась и каким-то образом получила 67 год вместо 57 :)) в 57 верю! :)))

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- The stuffy cave-like club where The Beatles staged some of their earliest performances has celebrated its 50th birthday.

The Cavern Club -- a former fruit warehouse cellar and air raid shelter -- opened as a jazz venue in 1957 with the Merseysippi Jazz Band, but it was the advent of rock 'n' roll that popularized the club where music producer Brian Epstein eventually discovered the Fab Four.

John Lennon's sister works at the club today and says those early performances were important for her brother.

"John felt he was the raw-edged rocker he wanted to be on this stage before being polished up," Lennon's sister, Julia Baird, told The Associated Press. "He regretted the way they were later smartened up, pulled into suits and ripped out of their leathers."

The Beatles first played a lunchtime session in 1961, but Lennon and Paul McCartney both appeared at the club with the Quarrymen Skiffle Group years before.

Ringo Starr is also thought to have made his debut at the club with the Eddie Clayton Skiffle group -- another band playing an improvised form of jazz popularized in Britain in the 1950s -- while George Harrison appeared at the group's 1961 debut. The Beatles' first tickets sold for about £5 pounds ($10).

After struggling to survive, the club was demolished in 1973 but was rebuilt on half of its original structure in 1984. Bands from Argentina to Russia played in a 13-hour session to honor its anniversary on Tuesday.

Jane Enenko, 26, endured a five-day journey from Siberia for the anniversary.

"Even for someone of my generation its so special to come inside and relive the '60s," Enenko said.

The Cavern is now a global brand with operations in Australia, Argentina and Japan.

"This place put Liverpool on the world map," said Sam Jones, 37. "It's still a name in the psyche of everyone and integral to city's music heritage."

The Beatles and the Stones to appear on special Cavern album

Containing 50 tracks from artists who have all appeared at the club over the years, the tracklist reads like a Who's Who of British popular music over the decades, and amply highlights the pivotal importance and influence the club has extended over the years since it opened on 16th January 1957.

Other notable rock royalty on the album include The Who, Queen, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, The Kinks, Chuck Berry and Paul McCartney performing the classic track All Shook Up live at the Cavern. An exceptionally rare vintage black and white photograph of the now famous Cavern Club, Liverpool entrance that was taken in the year that the club opened. The Cavern was opened by the then owner Alan Synter on 16th January 1957 it was situated in a warehouse cellar at 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool on the opening night over 600 music fans packed the famous arches to watch the Merseysippi Jazz Band perform there, the group had been signed by Synter just hours before the performance. Synter named the Cavern after a Parisian Jazz club ‘Le Caveau La Huchette’, hoping the club would become England’s biggest jazz venue outside London. 1957 was a pivotal year in the club’s history from its early jazz sessions to the introduction of skiffle sessions which would see a debut performance on 7th August 1957 for John Lennon’s group the Quarry Men. The group were managed by Lennon’s friend Nigel Whalley whose father played at the same golf club as Alan Synter. Part of the performance did not go down well with the club’s owner when Lennon decided to perform Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, so much so that a terse note was sent to the stage simply stating ‘Cut The Bloody Rock!’. Paul McCartney did not perform with the group on this date as he was away on scout camp. Ringo Starr would also appear on several occasions in 1957 with various groups of which he was a member such as the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group and Al Caldwell’s Skiffle Group, this was the group would go on to renamed Rory Storm And The Hurricanes. The photograph is stamped ‘COPYRIGHT’ verso. It has a small piece of brown paper attached to the top right front side with the number ‘732’ written on it and a piece of brown paper attached to the top of the reverse. The photograph measures 15cm x 20.5cm (5.9 inches x 8 inches). The condition is very good plus.
