New Book about Miles' Music

Though he's revered for his work from the 1950s to the mid '60s, jazz legend Miles Davis spent the entire second half of his career--from 1967 until his death in 1991--exploring electric music. Running the Voodoo Down: The Electric Music of Miles Davis examines this quarter-century of musical innovation in detail and reveals its importance to Davis's career and to music and culture in America and around the world. According to Milo Miles, music reviewer, “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” and contributing writer, Rolling Stone, “Miles Davis, finally made more artist than attitude in his most controversial period, gets his poly-fusion sorcery set straight here.”

Upon their initial release, albums such as Bitches Brew and On the Corner were met with utter confusion--if not downright revulsion--by jazz purists. But this book goes beyond the outrage to take a closer look at Davis's bold efforts to broaden his range and break the bounds of nostalgia. From an appreciative look at the widely reviled On the Corner and an exploration of Davis's “pop life” in the '80s, to his combative relationship with producer Teo Macero and the contributions of Michael Henderson, Running the Voodoo Down covers a fascinating breadth of territory.

Author Philip Freeman places Davis's controversial 1960s and 1970s albums in a new and different light, encouraging us to hear Miles's music alongside the work of Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and the trumpeter's own sidemen. Running the Voodoo Down offers longtime jazz fans and new listeners alike unexpected insights into Davis's unique genius.

Philip Freeman's writing on jazz, metal, and other music has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Jazziz, The Village Voice, The Wire, The Cleveland Scene, Down Beat, Alternative Press, Revolver, and Metal Hammer. He lives in New Jersey.

Agharta. Фактически гитарный альбом с обширным использованием квакера и дисторшна. Пара гитаристов поработала на славу.
Здорово!

The Cellar Door Sessions 1970The Cellar Door Sessions 1970
Miles Davis | Sony BMG Legacy

The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 is the eighth box set edition in a series begun in 2004, moving chronologically through the trumpeter’s career with John Coltrane and Gil Evans, recorded output for Columbia from 1963-68, and extensive investigations into the sessions that yielded In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson. This collection, however, has less to do with this series conceptually than it does with mid to late-‘90s releases highlighting live Miles (such as Live at the Plugged Nickel or Miles Davis At Fillmore). The material on this six-CD set was recorded at the Cellar Door in Washington DC and is almost all unreleased, except for parts of the Saturday night show, which were presented in edited form on 1997’s Live-Evil.

It's not surprising that the box sets have emphasized Miles’ albums. Given that he released some of the most musically and culturally significant records in jazz, analyses of his career have usually focused on results. Perhaps more than any other jazz player, Miles is defined by his albums, a rolling snapshot of every innovation (good or bad) that came or he brought to jazz during his career. But here are six discs that are nothing more than a live document of a Miles working band—not as important as the second quintet, but consistent in concept at least. By these shows in December the lineup featured Gary Bartz (alto), Keith Jarrett (electric keys), Michael Henderson (electric bass), Jack DeJohnette (drums), Airto Moreira (percussion for most of the sets), and guest John McLaughlin for the last two discs.

Since these gigs were just gigs (albeit in a time when the rock performance aesthetic was firmly entrenched even in jazz—remember fusion was just around the corner), a listener should only assess whether the performances are worthwhile instead of getting bogged down in the group’s significance. And the performances are worthwhile mostly. The first two discs (Wednesday's first set and Thursday's second set) start off roughly with some misplaced energy.

By the second disc’s “Inamorata,” the band has finally gelled and performs the signature pre-fusion/funk explorations Miles spearheaded during this period with excellent results. The energy level is consistently high for discs three and four (Friday second and third sets) but drops somewhat when the band has to make room for the rambunctious McLaughlin on discs five and six (Saturday second and third sets).

It is a pleasure to hear Jarrett in this non-reflective energy setting and DeJohnette in full bash mode. Bartz is a different sax player than those who preceded him in Miles' bands, but the contrast is a compelling one. McLaughlin’s contributions are not his best, but it is clear what ideas he would take with him to his soon-to-be-formed Mahavishnu Orchestra.

As box sets go, this is not the revelation that Bitches Brew or Jack Johnson were. But it does show that Miles worked things out on stage like everyone else, even if what he worked out was better than most.

Miles Davis's 80th Birthday

The late internationally revered icon Miles Davis would have turned 80 years old on May 26, which is being commemorated with a special Concord Box Set to be released May 23. Additionally, a special remix project entitled Evolution Of The Groove featuring Santana and Nas among others will be released this fall to honor the 15th Anniversary of Davis' passing on September 21. A live performance DVD release is also scheduled for release this fall.

2006 is a big year for Miles Davis. He was the sole jazz artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last March alongside Blondie, Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd; The Smithsonian launched Jazz Appreciation Month in April with several of his archival items; He will be posthumously inducted into the Hollywood's RockWalk in recognition of his significant contribution and impact to music, and critically acclaimed actor Don Cheadle will portray Davis in a forthcoming biopic. A gallery exhibition of original paintings and other artworks by Davis is also being planned for the near future. Meanwhile, Davis' business representatives are busy taking meetings with longtime fan and supporter, Carlos Santana, to discuss upcoming projects with Miles Davis Properties.

Russell Gunn will perform in Miles Davis' home town

Trumpet extraordinaire Russell Gunn is coming home as the Marquee Artist for the Lifting the Legacy: Miles, MO' Music & Juneteenth Jazz Concert on May 26, 2006 at the Blackmon Entertainment Plaza in East St. Louis, IL. The Grammy-Award-nominated Gunn is a recording artist with eleven CDs to his credit. Russell's much anticipated new release is due out on October 24th 2006. Tentatively titled The Blue Pill (Highnote Records), the CD is a collection of jazz standards with the Russell Gunn "funky twist".

The concert is a collage of art disciplines and people merging for what may appear, at first glance, to be a wonderful tribute to the legendary Miles Davis to celebrate his 80th birthday. Anne Walker of Freedom Trails says, "This could easily be a stand-alone concert for Miles, but that's only the first part of the story of dedicated people with little resources, making an against the grain effort to revive a culture, a tradition (jazz) and a city."

Russell Gunn will conduct a concert related workshop at 1 PM on May 23rd at East St. Louis Sr. High School's auditorium. Russell is a Lincoln High School graduate and protege of Professor Ron Carter. East Side is located at 4700 State St. This workshop will be motivational as well as technical. Russell will address work ethics, diversity, confidence, as well as convey his personal musical journey. This will include his musical accomplishments, noting the people he has performed with in demonstration of a multi-dimensional musician and how that applies to all aspects of life.

Gunn will be accompanied by locally acclaimed artists Reggie Thomas on piano, Montez Coleman on drums, John King on bass, Amos Brewer on sax--and who knows who else will show up? Myers' group includes Rolla Armstead on sax, Dr. London Branch on bass, Aye Aton on drums and Sayeed Jamal on sax. Rolla, now an accomplished Milwaukee legend, was born in Alton and his mother did housework in the Miles Davis home. Branch was a former professor of Music at Jackson State University and teacher for Gunn. Aton was a former drummer for Sun Ra.

Since East St. Louis City Council gave a thumbs up on a resolution to honor Miles with a street sign, it will be erected at 17th & Kansas, where Miles grew up. The late, long presiding State Senator Kenneth Hall, lived in the same block. The honorary sign is to read: An honorary "Hall"Mark: Miles Davis Way, to honor both Davis and Hall. The definition of hallmarking meaning a mark indicating quality or excellence and it is substituting for the word tribute. Neighbors in the 1600 & 1700 blocks of Kansas signed a petition in favor of the street sign.

An honorary name change ceremony will be held on Miles' birthday, Friday, May 26 at noon at the corner of 17th & Kansas. A trumpet fanfare is planned. All trumpet players are welcome to come blow.

3CD Miles Davis's Prestige Recordings

Concord Music Group will release its 3-cd box set of complete Prestige recordings by Miles Davis's classic 1950s quintet with bonus CD of rare live recordings on May 23. In 1955, after his triumphant appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Miles Davis came into his own as an innovator destined to take jazz into new frontiers. Shortly after Newport, the trumpeter formed his seminal 1950s quintet, comprised of youthful up-and-comers John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones.

Over the course of three studio dates, the quintet changed history, recording five albums for Prestige Records that are still, a half-century later, heralded as masterworks. On May 23, these bebop, hard-bop, and balladic recordings, largely from five albums—The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin', Workin', Relaxin', and Steamin'—will be released together as the Prestige boxed set The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions by the Concord Music Group. The music, all of which was taped by Rudy Van Gelder at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, has been remastered in 24-bit from the original analog masters and presented in the sequence recorded at sessions beginning in November 1955 and concluding in October 1956.

The box contains 32 selections, including such compositions as "Four, " "Trane's Blues, " "My Funny Valentine, " "Tune Up, " and "When Lights Are Low" that are to this day essential tunes of the standard repertoire. A bonus CD features eight previously unissued radio and television audio performances. Included on Disc 4 are two tunes from The Tonight Show With Steve Allen: a fiery, hard-swinging romp through Oscar Pettiford's "Max Is Making Wax" and a lyrical rendition of Rodgers and Hart's ballad "It Never Entered My Mind, " both introduced by the television talk show host.

The set is packaged in an attractive box that features cover art by Davis (the painting "New York by Night") and includes five complete musical transcriptions of Miles's solos (suitable for framing) and a 40-page booklet with insightful annotations by Bob Blumenthal.

Blumenthal points out in the liners that 1955 was a tipping-point year for the trumpeter/bandleader, noting that "the Miles Davis Quintet heard here was Davis's means of seizing the moment when his physical health and his musical concepts were on an upswing, and when the public and the music industry had finally begun to pay attention." Blumenthal adds: "This is the band Davis organized when he wanted his recordings to stand for more than snapshots of his momentary interests."

The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions celebrates not only the 80th anniversary year of Davis's birth but also the 50th anniversary of the bulk of these recording sessions.

Prestige Records, founded in New York in 1949 and operated by Bob Weinstock, was a prominent independent jazz label of the 1950s and '60s that documented the giants of the music, including Davis, Coltrane, and Garland as well as Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, and Jackie McLean. It was acquired in May 1971 by Fantasy, Inc., which in turn was purchased by the Concord Music Group in November 2004.

Miles Davis On Columbia/Legacy Jazz Miles Davis On Columbia/Legacy Jazz

Columbia/Legacy Jazz releases Miles Davis - Cool & Collected on September 5, featuring 13 career-defining recordings spanning 1956 to 1985. Cool & Collected is the first single CD anthology to zero in on a baker's dozen of the recordings which created the swirling mythos of 'cool' that defines Miles, spanning 1956 to 1984, with a new previously unreleased bonus remix track to close the program. This definitive package of all-classic selections, which will be supported by one of the most aggressive multi-tiered consumer lifestyle marketing campaigns ever launched by Legacy Recordings, will arrive in stores September 5th on Columbia/Legacy Jazz, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

Underscoring the 'hip' factor associated with Cool & Collected is its fascinating cover design by Bert Stefano of Instituto Europea of Design in Italy. His design won a contest arranged with top design schools in 12 countries around the world. Students from these schools created their artwork based on Legacy's criteria for this Miles Davis album (demographics, marketing concept).

Other schools enlisted for the design competition were: New York's School of Visual Arts; ESDI (Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial) of Rio de Janeiro; Tokyo Gakugei University; Chelsea College of Art & Design in London; Köln International School of Design in Germany; Royal Academy of Arts at the Hague; CEV (European Volunteer Centre) of Barcelona; Instituto Europea of Design in Rome and Milan; and Instituto Europea of Design in Madrid.

If 'cool' is the magnet that has been drawing jazz hipsters together for these past fifty-five-plus years, then nowhere is that synergy better represented than on the brand new remix of 1969's "It's About That Time" heard on Cool & Collected. Newly recorded parts by Carlos Santana (lead guitar), drummer Vince Wilburn, Jr. (Miles' nephew and former band-member), bassist Charley Drayton, Geri Allen on Fender Rhodes piano, Pat Thrall, recording engineer/guitarist/programmer, and African drummers Azize Faye and Ndongo Mbaye are engaged in the remix of the original track (from the In A Silent Way LP sessions) that featured Miles on trumpet, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, bassist Dave Holland, guitarist John McLaughlin, and drummer Tony Williams. The Davis remix was produced by Wilburn, Thrall and Drayton; and was executive produced by Steve Berkowitz and Wilburn.

The remix of 1969's "It's About That Time" is the icing on a collection containing music that ranges from Miles' second year of recordings on Columbia – 1956's "Bye Bye Blackbird" and 'Round Midnight" (both with Miles' so-called "first great quintet" featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, as heard on the 'Round About Midnight LP) all the way through the two cover versions from his final Columbia album, 1985's You're Under Arrest, namely Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (with John Scofield on guitar) and the Michael Jackson hit "Human Nature" (with John McLaughlin on guitar).

The late 1950s were abundant with Miles Davis recordings that re-established him as the paradigm of cool, long after the Birth Of the Cool sessions (released in 1950) that signaled his graduation from the frenetic bebop movement of the '40s. Cool & Collected lives up to its title by gathering a brilliant quartet of 1958 sides – "Milestones" (the first session in which Coltrane was joined by Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone), "Stella By Starlight" and "Fran-Dance" (from the first session in which pianist Bill Evans joined the quintet), and the Gershwins' "Summertime" (from Porgy And Bess, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans) – topped off by this CD's opening gem, "So What, " from the undisputedly coolest jazz LP ever recorded, Kind Of Blue.

In December 1957, Miles took a side-trip to Paris where he hooked up with old friend and expatriate musician, drummer Kenny Clarke for sessions that yielded the French LP movie soundtrack on Fontana for Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator To The Gallows). The third track on the album, "Générique, " marks an extremely rare and historic appearance of a recording from that LP on a Columbia anthology.

The 1960s are represented by two crucial recordings: 1963's "Seven Steps To Heaven" was the title tune from the first LP to spring forth from Miles' new quintet of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and saxophonist George Coleman; a year and a half later, 1965's "E.S.P." was the title tune from the first LP (and first record date) by the fully-formed "second great quintet" – Hancock, Carter, Williams, and Wayne Shorter. Both of these tracks hold primal positions in the annals of cool.

When Miles Davis became the first (and only) modern jazz figure ever to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year, it demanded reflection upon his impact on popular culture in general – not just the worlds of jazz and rock that he forever welded together at the hip in the late 1960s. Decades later, in this landmark year of 2006 – in which Miles would have turned 80 years old on May 26th, and in which the 15th anniversary of his death is commemorated on September 25th – his mystique looms as large as ever on the landscape of 'cool.' The world of hip belongs to Miles, to paraphrase a line from Ol' Blues Eyes' handbook, and we are all just guests.

The marketing campaign devised for Cool & Collected will take full advantage of the celebrations that have already begun surrounding Miles' 80th birthday. Targeting a very broad market on a lifestyle basis, this campaign seeks to introduce the legacy of Miles to a new generation of music listeners. Legacy will faithfully represent Miles as a fountainhead of inspiration, innovation, and style, in other words: Cool.

A combination of marketing tools will include a 30-second TV Commercial, and written testimonials from Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Herb Alpert, Sting, Chris Botti, and more.

A full complement of media events – including induction onto Hollywood's RockWalk (sponsored by Guitar Center Music Foundation) and a football half-time tribute to Miles by the legendary USC Marching band on November 11th – are also scheduled. Various contests and sweepstakes, along with a growing list of third party corporate sponsorships, grassroots marketing efforts, and a strong online presence is also being coordinated.

"Miles Dewey Davis III – trumpeter, visionary, and eternal modernist – was a force of nature, " wrote Ashley Kahn (author of Kind Of Blue: The Making Of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, Da Capo, 2000) in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame dinner journal on the occasion of Miles' induction. "With an ear that disregarded categories of style, he sought out new musical worlds, and generations followed in his footsteps. While the creative rush and experimental charge that come to most musicians in youth eventually run down, Davis held an exploratory edge for most of his 65 years. It had to be fresh, or forget it."

Miles Davis And The Hollywood's RockWalk

Thursday, September 28th, 2006jazz icon Miles Davis to be inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk. Throughout his 50 year career, Miles Davis has embodied everything that is cool. His innovative style of jazz defined the evolution of the genre -- and some argue that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't around to push it forward. His love for music began at the age of 13, when he first picked up the trumpet.

He went on to study at Juilliard, then known as the Institute of Music, before leaving school to begin a full time career as a jazz musician. Making his recording debut in 1947, Davis went on to record many legendary albums including Round About Midnight, The Birth of Cool, Kind of Blue, which sold more than 2 million copies, Bitches Brew, and Tutu. Having received eight GRAMMY Awards in his career, Davis was also the sole jazz artist inducted into the 2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Concord Records released a 4-disc box set entitled The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions on May 23 to commemorate his 80th birthday on May 26. The 15th anniversary of his passing on September 28, will be honored with the Sony/Legacy Jazz release of Cool & Collected on September 5, along with a live performance DVD release. A special remix project entitled Evolution of the Groove, featuring Santana and Nas, will be released this fall. A biopic on the life of Davis is also in the works with Golden Globe winning actor Don Cheadle set to portray Miles.

Miles Davis will be posthumously inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution Rock 'n' Roll, Blues and R&B. His bronze bust will reside alongside the handprints and signatures of other equally accomplished musicians and innovators such as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, The Cure, X, AC/DC and Van Dyke Parks among numerous others.
