Every culture has its creation myths. Beatlemania is no exception. We all know how The Beatles started. John, Paul, George and Ringo playing The Cavern. Right? Every culture has its creation myths. Beatlemania is no exception. We all know how The Beatles started. John, Paul, George and Ringo playing The Cavern. Right?

Wrong. Before Ringo, there was Pete Best on drums. And before The Cavern, there was The Casbah Coffee Club. It was in The Casbah that the Beatles’ sound was born. Sir Paul McCartney, in a groundbreaking new interview, says “It’s a good idea to let people know about the Casbah. They know about The Cavern, but The Casbah was the place where all that started. We helped paint it and stuff. We looked upon it as our personal club.”

FORMER BEATLE PETE BEST RELEASES NEW DVD BIOGRAPHY

Pete Best, the Beatles' original drummer, has released a new DVD called Best Of The Beatles. Best, who played with the group during their formative years in Liverpool, England and Hamburg, Germany, was kicked out of the Beatles in 1962 -- just after the band signed their recording contract with EMI Records and just before they recorded their debut single "Love Me Do."

Best Of The Beatles chronicles Best's two years with the group -- featuring never-before-told stories of their legendary residencies in Hamburg and rarely-seen pictures and footage of the Beatles' pre-fame days. Best Of The Beatles airs on PBS September 28th at 8 PM ET. Check your local listings for stations and times.

Pete Best talked with us and recalled the Beatles' disastrous Decca Records audition on New Year's Day 1962, which the group ended up failing:"Yes; we could've performed better. Yes; we could've gotten a better sound. It was an audition. But the difficulty that people had was -- because we had such a big, powerhouse savage sound -- they didn't know how to record it. They couldn't contain it on the equipment. Now they could. But then they couldn't."

Pete Best was the Beatles' drummer from August 17th, 1960 until August 15th, 1962, when he was replaced by Ringo Starr.

Best Of The Beatles features the earliest known footage of the Beatles. The 30-second color clip which features the group performing in their then-trademark leather outfits is from Valentine's Day February 14th, 1961, at Liverpool's Casanova Club.

The DVD features over an hour of bonus footage, including a rare in-depth interview with legendary Beatles photographer Astrid Kirrcherr.

Best Of The Beatles sells for around $15.

Fired Beatle Best tells his side on DVDFired Beatle Best tells his side on DVD

<--- The Pete Best Band (from left Phil Melia, Pete Best, Paul Parry, Roag Best, Chris Cavanagh and Tony Flynn.)

Before drummer Ringo Starr became a Beatle, history recalls how and when his predecessor Pete Best was fired, but the reasons why remain up for debate.

From the band's perspective, well documented in Mark Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Chronicles as well as the Beatles Anthology DVD, dissatisfaction with Best appeared to be the result of — pick one — jealousy from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison over his good looks, producer George Martin's assessment that he wasn't a good-enough drummer, and/or how shy and less of a fun character he was compared to the other three.

Yet asked some 43 years later if he even saw his dismissal coming, the 63-year-old Best responds in a phone interview from his British abode, "No.

"I still don't know why. There has been no communication with the others. At most, there'd be two or three people still alive today who know the definitive reason. It hasn't come out; maybe it never will come out."

Still, Best explains the main reason for his new DVD documentary Best Of The Beatles — of which a one-hour abridged version airs on PBS tomorrow at 8 p.m. — is that when the Beatles Anthology was issued 10 years ago (from which Best actually received some handsome royalties) the days leading up to Best's firing were recollected only from Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr's points of view. Missing were key discussions with the likes of original manager Allan Williams, German club owner Bruno Koschmider, art college students Astrid Kirchherr (girlfriend of Stuart Sutcliffe before his untimely passing in 1962) and Klaus Voormann, Lennon's first wife Cynthia and singer Tony Sheridan.

"The whole idea with this DVD was to hear our side of the story, other people's sides of the story, and allow people to try and make up their own minds as to what really happened," Best says.

At least now Best is no longer bitter over the firing. As made clear on Best Of The Beatles, Randolph Peter Best of North Derby, Lancashire, England, retains fond memories of his spot in the Fab's folklore. Best was hired in 1960 as the Beatles drummer days before the group — which also included Lennon's art college chum Sutcliffe — headed off to Hamburg, Germany, for a slew of gigs in the city's seedy Reeperbaun district. He certainly helped the group define their sound, up to seven hours a night, six nights a week.

"There was a temperament there," Best says. "The stamping on stage, and the antics we had, for us it was a release of energy and way of entertaining ourselves. But it also captivated the audiences. That's what became hearsay for us when we returned home to Liverpool."

At least up until his 1962 dismissal, the rest remains Beatles history.

PETE BEST AT PEACE WITH HIS BEATLES LEGACYPETE BEST AT PEACE WITH HIS BEATLES LEGACY

The Beatles' original drummer Pete Best says that he's now able to look at his two years with the band with happy memories. Best, who was fired from the group just prior to recording their first single "Love Me Do" in 1962, has just released a DVD chronicling his two year stint in the band. Titled Best Of The Beatles, it features recollections from Best as well as many key players in the group's early years -- such as the Beatles' close friend and noted photographer Astrid Kirrcherr and the group's first manager, Allan Williams.

The disc, which clocks in at over three hours, tells the story of the Beatles' rise to fame in the clubs of Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany. The DVD also features the earliest-known footage of the Beatles from February 14th, 1961, performing live at Liverpool's Casanova Club. Apart from being the earliest known film, the color home movie shows the only footage of the group performing in their then-trademark leather outfits.

Best explained to us that after more than 40 years, he's come to terms with the fact that he nearly became one of the biggest celebrities in the world: "I put it to bed many, many years ago. Don't get me wrong -- it wasn't 24-hour situation, it took a while to adjust to. But you've got to wake up one morning and basically go 'Hang on, it's no good reflecting about yesteryear all the time. It's very much about today and tomorrow.' And there are loads of things in life which compensate for it. You know I've got a great family, a great family life with four grandchildren which I totally idolize and spoil. I think life's good for me."

The Pete Best Band kicks off a series of appearances on October 22nd in Bloomington, Indiana at the Mall Of America.

Best's concerts feature songs from the early Beatles repertoire, including "I Saw Her Standing There," "One After 909," "Twist And Shout," "Money" and "Love Me Do."

Best of the Beatles fantastic storyBest of the Beatles fantastic story
EXCELLENT DVD: To this day, Pete Best doesn't know why he was fired as drummer

Sunday, October 30, 2005

A generation following the Beatles' storied, global invasion that peaked in a grandiloquent call for peace, love and harmony, it turns out there was toilet paper stuck to their gear Beatle boots all along. Even John Lennon eventually admitted they had all been bloody cowards about the thing.

He was talking about Pete Best, their original drummer. In 1962, just as the Beatlemania rollercoaster had click-clicked its way to the top of the first really high peak of the ride, they shoved Best out, pulled Ringo Starr in and took off, just like that.

They never spoke to Best again and to this day, 43 years later, he has no clue what the hell happened. He's not prevaricating, not being cute -- he still really, truly doesn't understand.

Best has a fantastic story, a rock 'n' roll legend, told in an excellent new documentary DVD called Best of the Beatles that might even make him a few quid after the millions he watched his old best mates swan through over the years. Psychedelic Rolls Royce indeed.

An hour-long precis of the documentary has run on PBS but you have to see the whole film to really get it. Much of the Beatles' very existence, it turns out, was predicated on a long-shot horse race.

Mona Best was Pete's mother, born of English parents in Delhi, India. She met and married soldier John Best and moved to Liverpool with him, settling with their two sons in a little flat. She wanted a grander life and one day pawned her jewelry and bet it all on a 33-to-one odds horse called Never Say Die.

"It was a rank outsider, wasn't it?" says Pete Best. "The family always liked a bit of a flutter, she liked the young up-and-coming jockey and she liked the name of the horse. If it's going to come in, it's going to make a few bob and I'm glad to say it did come in. It was quite a coup, a princely sum. You're talking about 1954 -- it was enough to buy an old Victorian house."

By the standards of those cramped, post-war years, Mona had bought the family a mansion with her winnings that boasted a massive, seven-room cellar she eventually turned into a coffee club, the Casbah. The musical entertainment at the grand opening was a band called the Quarrymen featuring a core of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

As time went on, the band -- they went from Johnny and the Moondogs to the Silver Beatles to the Beatles -- had a terrible time finding a good, reliable drummer until Best joined in 1960, just in time for the first trip to play in Hamburg's notorious Reeperbahn red-light district. There were three trips to Germany but the first time they were like innocents off to Sodom and Gomorrah.

"It was only after being there for a couple of weeks and acclimatizing you suddenly realize, hang on a minute, this is great," says Best. "We are the kings of Hamburg; throw pearls before swine and we're going to enjoy ourselves. And that's exactly what we did; we got up to every bloody mischief, enjoyed life with all the hookers, stood and drank for 24 hours till we fell down. As we always said, it's rock 'n' roll."

Over the next two years the Beatles got hot, playing eight-, nine-, 10-hour nights, propped up by pills and booze. Their renown spilled out of Liverpool down into London, records sales were sizzling, the Beatlemania craze was gaining real momentum and everybody knew they were on the precipice of something really big ("We had them, it was ours for the taking") when Best got the call to go down to manager Brian Epstein's office one August morning in 1962. He was fired.

"I really don't know why," he says today. "Many years ago I stopped thinking about it."

Others didn't. There was a rumour for years that he just wasn't such a hot drummer but in fact Ringo stole licks from him. Considering the other three hadn't the jam to fire him themselves, a most plausible argument was that his sultry good looks were stealing the limelight from a certain Cute Beatle.

"Yes, I've been over the jealousy aspect," Best says. "At the end of the day we were a band, we'd been through thick and thin, we'd conquered Hamburg, got a recording contract, this, that and the other. We'd all been through the same situation. Why all of a sudden? As long as the definitive reason doesn't come out it leaves it open to all the Sherlock Holmes, all the sleuths. If they come up with the reason, fine."

Best went to work in the civil service, specializing in employment and training for 20 years, and retired. Yes, co-workers knew about his past and oh-so close brush with mega-fame but left him alone about it.

Variety magazine readers recently voted the Beatles the greatest entertainment icons of the 20th century. John Lennon has said the Beatles were never as good again as during those early days when the world wasn't watching. Best of the Beatles is a fascinating glimpse into that time.
