Press Conference

John, in characteristic black outfit, hosts a media conference the day after the Bed-In ended. Now, 35 years later, and 24 years after his murder, media interest in John is as high now as it was then.

Close Harmony

With the tape rolling, John takes the solo on the verses of "Give Peace A Chance" while Yoko and the rest of the Plastic Ono Band (which consisted of everybody in the suite ... about 35 people) wait for the chorus to come around.

With the Bed-In and press conference wrapped up, John dressed in street clothing for the first time in more than a week. (Hard to remember today, but in those days nearly everyone smoked, and there were always cigarettes burning in the suite.)

Hare Krishna

Members of the Montreal Temple of the Krishna Consciousness movement were ensconced in an adjoining room of Suite 1742. They chanted and danced almost constantly, and some of them provided part of the back-beat in the recording of "Give Peace A Chance".

Study in Black

John and Yoko, dressed entirely in black, emerge in a dramatic chiaroscuro effect, enhanced by the photographer in the darkroom. This was taken at the media conference the day after the Bed-In ended.

Yoko's Time Out

When did they sleep? Many people have asked. Any time they could, even if a DJ (New York's legendary "Murray the K") was broadcasting live from bedside and a cameraman was filming them. There were mobs of people in the suite at least 14 hours each day.

Hands Down (Dick Gregory)

Among the many celebrities to meet with John and Yoko to discuss world peace was the American comedian and activist, Dick Gregory, a presidential candidate in 1972. He promised, if elected, "to paint the White House BLACK"

All Together, Now

A long shot of the room taken during the recording session, showing just a portion of the crowd of some three dozen people who participated. There were more people behind the photographer, pounding on a tabletop and kicking a door to provide the driving beat.

The Bed-In, Longshot

Photographed with an ultra wide-angle lens, this unusual photo gives a sense of the media activity that constantly surrounded John and Yoko for eight days. There were two film crews shooting almost constantly, as well as crews from TV stations, press photographers, and reporters interviewing the stars.

Reading the Reviews

Yoko was a pioneer of the performance art form. The Bed-In was conceived as a piece of performance art, it was treated as such by much of the press, and like any performers, John and Yoko eagerly read what was written about it.

Family Portrait

John, Yoko and Kyoko, her six-year-old daughter by a previous marriage, snuggle together in a rare quiet time. The youngster kept everyone in the suite entertained for eight days, but occasionally John had to impose gentle discipline on her.

Ev'rybody's Talkin' About ...

Just before the recording, John wrote the words to the verses of "Give Peace A Chance" on a posterboard with a felt marker. Each verse began "Ev'rybody's talkin" about ..." and contained the names of people who had visited, and events that had taken place in their hotel suite and in the world during their week in bed. The chorus was, of course, "All we are saying is give peace a chance."

Confrontation (Al Capp)

It wasn't all peace and love during the eight days of the Bed-In. American cartoonist, Al Capp, creator of L'il Abner and a well known right wing conservative, nearly ignited a fight when he visited by pointedly insulting John and being particularly abusive toward Yoko.

Peace Talk (Tom Smothers)

One of the many celebrities who sat on the bed with John and Yoko to discuss world peace and how to bring it about, was comedian / musician Tommy Smothers. His opposition to the Viet Nam war, while it was still an unpopular cause in the US, cost him and his brother their prime-time network TV show when the sponsor, a major US car company and defense contractor, withdrew.

Give Feet a Chance

The star members of the Plastic Ono Band relax after the final take. John and Yoko gave that name to the crowd - some 35 to 40 people - of celebrities, photographers, journalists, Hare Krishnas and friends who were in the suite the day "Give Peace A Chance" was recorded. John sings and plays with great intensity, as Yoko sings during the recording of "Give Peace A Chance". Once again, the photo does not give any hint of the size of the crowd in the suite. Note the caricature John inscribed on to the soundboard of his guitar.

The Morning After

Members of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth's housekeeping staff clean up after all the action concluded. But a sense of the unprecedented event lingers ... and still lingers in suite 1742 of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.

All we are Saying

With a group of Hare Krishna drummers and others pounding a tabletop and kicking a door, thereby laying down the back-beat, the soloists belt out the lyrics to "Give Peace A Chance". Tommy Smothers and friend, Judy Marcioni, Dr Timothy Leary and wife Rosemary were amoung some of the singers.
