Jagger to include rarities on solo album
Wed Aug 8, 2007

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mick Jagger will include three previously unreleased tunes on an upcoming album compiling 17 tracks from his various solo endeavours.

"The Very Best of Mick Jagger" will be issued by Rhino Records, the archival arm of Warner Music Group, on October 2 in the United States, and a day earlier internationally.

The three rarities are the John Lennon-produced "Too Many Cooks (Spoil the Soup)," which Jagger recorded in 1973 in Los Angeles; "Charmed Life," an outtake from the sessions for his 1993 solo album "Wandering Spirit"; and a cover of bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson's "Checking Up On My Baby," which Jagger recorded during the "Wandering Spirit" period with Los Angeles blues band the Red Devils. Jagger's sessions with the Red Devils have been widely bootlegged.

Ten tunes are drawn from his four solo albums, "She's the Boss" (1985), "Primitive Cool" (1987), "Wandering Spirit" and "Goddess in the Doorway" (2001). Also included are two songs recorded for movies, 1970's "Memo From Turner" (from "Performance"), and 2004's Golden Globe-winning "Old Habits Die Hard" (from the remake of "Alfie").

Rounding out the set are two Motown covers, his 1978 collaboration with Peter Tosh on the Temptations' "(You Got to Walk And) Don't Look Back" and his 1985 duet with David Bowie on Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street," a tune recorded for Live Aid.

Notably absent are Jagger's performance of the title track for the 1986 movie "Ruthless People" and his collaboration with the Jackson 5 on 1984's "State of Shock."

The Rolling Stones are currently in Norway, as part of a European tour that wraps on August 26 in London.

THE VERY BEST OF MICK JAGGER to Be Released October 2 on Atlantic/Rhino Records
Features Essential Tracks From All Four Solo Albums, Plus Soundtrack Songs and Three Previously Unreleased Tracks

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - August 8, 2007) - THE VERY BEST OF MICK JAGGER, the first overview of his distinguished solo career, is set for release in the U.S. on October 2, on Atlantic/Rhino Records. It's a vivid reminder of the compelling gifts that brought Jagger fame in the first place. As an embodiment of all that rock 'n' roll can mean, he is virtually without peer and that is made plain on this compelling 17-track collection, which includes three previously unreleased performances.

But Mick, for better or worse, is also one of those figures who has far eclipsed the realm of rock 'n' roll to become one of the most recognizable names and faces in the world, as celebrated for who he is as for what he's accomplished. Indeed, he is a "musician and songwriter," one of the greatest singers in rock 'n' roll history, and a restless, adventurous artist.

The earliest track on the album is "Memo From Turner," a raw, R&B burner (showcasing Ry Cooder on slide guitar) that was featured in the seminal 1970 film "Performance," in which Jagger also starred. The most recent track, "Old Habits Die Hard," also references Jagger's film career. It originally appeared on the soundtrack (produced by Jagger and former Eurythmic Dave Stewart) of the 2004 film "Alfie," and it won a Golden Globe® for "Best Original Song."

In between those two peaks, separated by more than three decades, Jagger released four solo albums: "She's The Boss" (1985), "Primitive Cool" (1987), "Wandering Spirit" (1993), and "Goddess In The Doorway" (2001). Ten selections from those albums appear on THE VERY BEST OF, including "God Gave Me Everything," which Jagger cowrote with Lenny Kravitz; "Joy," on which Bono contributes a guest vocal; "Sweet Thing," the singer's irresistibly sensual 1993 single; and "Evening Gown," a paean to lasting love that closes out this set.

THE VERY BEST OF also includes two dynamic collaborations on Motown songs, a favorite source of material for Jagger over the years. Reggae legend Peter Tosh, one of the founding members of The Wailers, was among the first artists signed to Rolling Stones Records in the late '70s. For Tosh's 1978 album, "Bush Doctor," he and Jagger collaborated on a seductive duet on The Temptations' hit, "(You Got to Walk And) Don't Look Back," which was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White.

Then, in 1985, Jagger teamed up with David Bowie to scorch Martha & The Vandellas' classic "Dancing in the Street," which was released as a single as part of the Live Aid effort to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The song went to #1 in England, and the video for it premiered at the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia.

The sizzling "Too Many Cooks (Spoil The Soup)," was produced by John Lennon and recorded by Jagger in 1973 in Los Angeles. The track features an all-star lineup that includes guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Jesse Ed Davis, keyboardist Al Kooper, bassist Jack Bruce, drummer Jim Keltner, and, on background vocals, singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. It has never previously been released.

The album's two additional previously unreleased tracks are demos from Jagger's "Wandering Spirit" session with producer Rick Rubin. Jagger had sketched out "Charmed Life" (with his daughter Karis on backing vocals) but then decided the track didn't fit with the rest of the album. The rhythmically charged version on THE VERY BEST OF has been remixed by producer Ashley Beedle. "Taking the bare bones of the song and getting to the finished version with Ashley Beedle was a great creative collaboration," remarks Jagger.

Meanwhile, as they were making "Wandering Spirit," Rubin suggested that Jagger spend a day recording with The Red Devils, a torrid L.A. blues band. "The difficult decision I was faced with when listening to the tracks I recorded with The Red Devils, and having to choose only one, reminded me what a great band they were," says Jagger. One of the results of that session is Jagger's previously unreleased rollicking version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Checkin' Up On My Baby."

While, for the most part, Jagger shuns self-revelation in his songs, this collection constitutes as rich a portrait of the singer as can be imagined. It shows him embracing a wide variety of musical forms -- blues, reggae, rock 'n' roll, dance music, ballads -- and impressing his own inimitable mark on them. It shows him addressing matters of the body and the spirit and celebrating all the ways that music engages us in our lives and in the lives of others. It shows Mick Jagger as a musician, singer, and songwriter, in short, and that's finally who he is. The very best of him is very good indeed.

"It was such a disparate time with lots of ups and down -- fortunately mostly up -- like you do generally have in life," explains Jagger. "For me, it's a great thing to listen to since all the songs speak to a certain time and make things come alive for me."

THE VERY BEST OF MICK JAGGER will be available at all retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $18.98. The album will also be available at digital retail outlets for a suggested price of $11.99, with ringtones available for six of the tracks.

Мик Джаггер выпустит три не издававшихся трекаМик Джаггер выпустит три не издававшихся трека

Компания Rhino Records выпустит сборник лучших песен Мика Джаггера 2 октября 2007 года, сообщает Reuters.

Пластинка получит название The Very Best of Mick Jagger. На ней будет содержаться семнадцать треков, три из которых ранее не издавались.

Charmed Life, одна из трех песен, была создана для сольного альбома Джаггера Wandering Spirit 1993 года выпуска, но не вошла в окончательную версию диска. Трек Too Many Cooks (Spoil the Soup) (что можно перевести как "У семи нянек дитя без глаза") записывался в Лос-Анжелесе в 1973 году; его продюсером стал Джон Леннон. Третья не издававшаяся ранее композиция - кавер на Checking Up On My Baby блюзмена Сонни Бой Вильямсона (Sonny Boy Williamson).

Также сборник будет включать песни с четырех сольных альбомов Джаггера (She's the Boss, Primitive Cool, Wandering Spirit и Goddess in the Doorway) и два трека, записанные певцом для кинофильмов.

John Lennon & Mick Jagger's lost collaboration John Lennon & Mick Jagger's lost collaboration

In 1973, Yoko Ono kicked John Lennon out. She sent their personal assistant May Pang off with him, with the instructions to "be with John, help him, and see that he gets whatever he wants." Together Pang and Lennon moved to Los Angeles, a period dubbed "The Lost Weekend." It was a weekend that lasted from 1973-1975, during which Lennon passed the time with Phil Spector, recording material that would eventually be released as part of his Rock 'n' Roll LP. He also caroused through the town with musician buddies who informally called themselves the Hollywood Vampires: Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Micky Dolenz and Alice Cooper, and he was known to have recorded songs with Mick Jagger, Elton John, and David Bowie during that time frame as well.

The track he laid down with Mick Jagger was, for a long time, just mythical. In 2003, a London record store owner put an unlabeled record up for auction which he claimed had come originally from Ronnie Wood (guitarist for the Stones) and contained a collaboration cover of Jagger singing the old Willie Dixon blues song, "Too Many Cooks" with Lennon on guitar. Some reports also place Ringo Starr on drums and date the recording to London 1974. That unlabelled acetate (made directly from a master tape, and found in a stack of records) sold for £1,400, and Mick admitted that he had forgotten it existed for a number of years.

Now Mick is going to release that recording on his upcoming compilation album, The Very Best of Mick Jagger [October 2, Rhino]. The album collects material from all four of Mick's solo albums, recordings from various points throughout his career, and will include three previously unreleased tracks, including the collaboration with Lennon.

It seems to me that Jagger may have recorded an earlier version of this same song in L.A. in 1973 during the Lost Weekend period with Lennon only producing and not playing? The band for this session is credited to include Harry Nilsson on backing vocals, Beatles collaborator Jim Keltner on drums, Stones sax player Bobby Keys, Cream bassist Jack Bruce, and Al Kooper on keys (you may remember him from the hesitant Hammond B3 playing on Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," if you've seen the Scorsese documentary).

So essentially, I am driving myself crazy trying to nail down the slippery provenance on this specific version. It's the history sleuth in me. I guess we'll find out October 2 if Lennon is playing here or not. It's a cool, funky, brassy song either way.

Mick Jagger's son, James, lights up the stage Mick Jagger's son, James, lights up the stage
By Stephen Adams
Last Updated: 2:05am BST 29/08/2007

Mick Jagger's son, James, appeared to be following in his old man's rebellious ways last night when he lit up a cigarette on stage.

<-- Rising son: James Jagger [left] takes to the stage for his lead role in ‘Lone Star’

But the young actor had actually got permission to smoke, unlike his father's band-mates last week.

The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood broke new smoking laws last Tuesday when they lit up while playing to 23,000 at The O2 Arena in Greenwich, south-east London, but they were not prosecuted because no one complained.

James, who turned 21 yesterday, sparked up as he acted in his stage debut at the more humble 110-seat King's Head Theatre in Islington, north London.

The son of Mick and Texan model Jerry Hall had obtained permission from Islington council to smoke in a scene of the play Lone Star, about a war veteran returning from Vietnam.

Jagger junior played a Texan "village idiot"' who looks up to Roy, played by EastEnders actor Shane Richie, a veteran struggling to re-establish his position in the community.

Oliver Royds, the play's producer, said: "It would have been ridiculous to have had fake cigarettes - it's set in a Texan bar in the 1970s."

advertisement
James is co-starring with Richie in Lone Star and another one-act black comedy, Private Wars, both by American playwright James McLure, at the pub over the next four weeks.

Mr Royds added: "James is perfect for the part in Lone Star. His Texan accent is impeccable, even though he normally speaks in a very English manner, like his father. James is also very good. He takes acting seriously."

James's agent, Kevin Wilson, said the plays were particularly relevant to today's audience.

He said: "The plays could be written about British or American servicemen returning from Iraq."

Yesterday lunchtime Mick took James out for a birthday drink to calm his nerves. The 64-year-old singer, along with James's sister, Lizzie, were expected to attend the production last night.

Stone me..that ciggie's a biggieStone me..that ciggie's a biggie
September 03, 2007

MICK JAGGER’s 15-year-old granddaughter was caught smoking a huge roll-up — in front of her giggling mum.

ROLLING STONES girl ASSISI JACKSON was snapped on holiday in Ibiza.

In other shots Assisi is seen smoking the large roll-ups in an apartment and at a nightclub — despite being too young to smoke under UK law.

Last night Jade’s spokeswoman insisted: “It was rolling tobacco, not cannabis.”

Jade, 35, runs a night at Ibiza superclub Pacha during the holiday season — attracting up to 3,000 ravers a time.

Assisi yesterday left the party island — famed for its drugs culture — after three weeks in a luxury villa with her mum and four pals.

She is returning to the £12,000- a-year Harrodian School in Barnes, South-West London.

Friends say she and jewellery designer Jade act more like best pals than mother and daughter.

One said: “They often go out together. Jade’s always been a party girl. Assisi takes after her.”

Assisi and sister Amba, 11, take their surname from Jade’s ex-lover, Cambridge graduate Piers Jackson.

Mick Jagger: Stone Alone Mick Jagger: Stone Alone
Jagger gives you a quick guide to some favorite songs from his upcoming solo hits album.

For most of his forty-five-year career, Mick Jagger has had one songwriting partner: Keith Richards. But outside of the Rolling Stones, he has teamed up with Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Peter Tosh and Bono; gotten production help from Rick Rubin and John Lennon; and scored a movie, Alfie, with Dave Stewart. A new collection, The Very Best of Mick Jagger, gathers Jagger's favorites, including killer solo cuts ("Don't Tear Me Up"), unreleased gems ("Too Many Cooks") and even a track from a shelved 1992 blues album he cut with an L.A. club band. Click through to read what Jagger had to say about some key tracks.

"Joy" (2001)
Jagger asked Bono to sing on this track because it had a strong gospel vibe. "I had to go seek him out in this little town in Germany [where U2 were on tour]," Jagger says. "We cut it at this little hotel in the middle of the woods. He had a terrible cold. If the shoe had been on the other foot, I would have told him to come back in a week, but he was so sweet about it and did his best to sing. In the end, he sounded great."

"Too Many Cooks (Spoil the Soup)" (Unreleased, 1973)
John Lennon led a weekly series of jam sessions during his infamous "lost weekend," a debauched eighteen-month period when he separated from Yoko Ono and moved to Los Angeles. Jagger sat in on some of the Sunday sessions at L.A.'s Record Plant, taking the vocals on this funky Willie Dixon cover -- which also features Harry Nilsson on backing vocals, Al Kooper on keyboards and Cream's Jack Bruce on bass. "It was a pretty crazy time for John," says Jagger, "but he did some interesting things. He wasn't always lost."

"Just Another Night" (1985)
The lead single from Jagger's 1985 solo debut, She's the Boss, was the most successful of his career, reaching Number Twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 -- but the singer isn't crazy about it. "It has that Eighties sort of slur from the recording techniques they used then," he says. "That big echoey backbeat. It was the first days of sample drum machines and stuff, which is now considered very wrong."

"Don't Tear Me Up" (1993)
Jagger recruited Rick Rubin to produce his third solo album, Wandering Spirit, after hearing the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. "We had quite a few rows," Jagger says of the producer. "I respect his opinions, but when we disagreed I said, 'It's my record, I'm singing it, and it's my opinion that counts.'" Despite the tension, Jagger was pleased by the final result -- especially on this tender ballad. "All the instruments and the vocals sound quite close to you, there's very little reverb," Jagger says. "It's the antithesis of the 'Just Another Night' sound. The fashion swung in the complete opposite direction."

"Checkin' Up on My Baby" (Unreleased, 1992)
Jagger cut this raw Sonny Boy Williamson cover with an L.A. club band called the Red Devils, which he discovered while in town recording Wandering Spirit. Over two afternoons, they laid down a dozen or so traditional blues numbers that evoked the Stones' earliest recordings, but the songs were never released. "It was like being back in 1963 and singing blues on Tuesday nights," Jagger says. "It has a nice roll to it."

"(You Gotta Walk and) Don't Look Back" (1978)
For Peter Tosh's 1978 debut for Rolling Stones Records, Bush Doctor, Tosh duetted with Jagger on a reggae rendition of this 1965 Temptations cover. "Peter was an edgy guy and was frustrated a lot of the time," Jagger says. "Bob Marley got so big, and that probably annoyed him." The two performed the song together on Saturday Night Live. "I wore this ridiculous outfit," Jagger says, "a pink cap and lots of tape all over me. I don't know why -- red sticky tape!"

"God Gave Me Everything," (2001)
Jagger says he envisioned writing with Lenny Kravtiz, but when he arrived in Miami he found Kravitz had completely written and recorded the music, leaving Jagger to come up with the lyrics and melody. "I think it's an interesting way of doing it," Jagger says of the process. "He was playing everything himself, which I think is great, so he doesn't have to think about any other musicians."

"Charmed Life," (Unreleased, 1992)
The version of this song that appears on The Very Best of is a remix Jagger commissioned Ashley Beetle, an English producer, to do based on an old demo. Jagger gave Beetle a stripped-down version of the track, with just guitar and drums on it, and instructed him to create something unique. "It wasn't supposed to be rock; it was supposed to be a dance track," Jagger says. "It was completely different to everything else on there."
