Stones plan massive reissue campaign
Just in time for their upcoming tour, The Rolling Stones will have their seminal '60s work re-issued on revamped compact discs.
ABKCO Records, which controls the group's releases through the '60s and up to (but not including) 1971's "Sticky Fingers", unveiled plans for their "Rolling Stones Remastered" series: 22 albums, including such titles as "Let It Bleed," "Out Of Our Heads," "December's Children," "Beggars Banquet," "12x5", and "Rolling Stones Now."
All 22 albums will be released Aug. 20, and distributed by Universal Music.
Each disc will be double-encoded with regular CD audio and Super Audio audiophile quality, and can be played on either type of equipment, the company said in a press release.
The albums involved in the reissue program were first put out on CD in 1986, although there have been calls from fans to upgrade the sound quality to modern standards.
"Improvements in technology had only been incremental since then so we didn't feel there was a compelling reason to go back to the market with these classic albums -- until now," ABKCO's Jody Klein said in a press release.
The new releases employ state-of-the-art DSD mastering technology, which digitally samples the music at a rate 64 times faster than standard CD audio. The company claims it also spent hundreds of hours in England and the U.S., searching for the truest possible master tapes.
