Personal life
Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian to Patrick, a storeman at the British Leyland factory in Bathgate, and Bridget Boyle, a shorthand typist.[2] The youngest of four brothers and six sisters, of whom only six survive, Boyle was born when her mother was 47.[9][10] The Sunday Times writes that it was a difficult birth, during which Boyle was briefly deprived of oxygen. She was diagnosed as having learning difficulties, which led to bullying at school [11][12]. She was labelled "Susie Simple" at school but quickly learnt to overcome those who derided her.[13]
After leaving school with few qualifications,[9] she was employed for the only time in her life as a trainee cook in the kitchen of West Lothian College for six months,[13] and took part in government training schemes.[2] She would visit the theatre from time to time to listen to professional singers,[2] and performed at a number of local venues.[14] In 1995, she auditioned for Michael Barrymore's My Kind of People,[14] which was looking for contestants at the Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow, but she said she was too nervous to make a good impression.[2] The Guardian reports that she attended Edinburgh Acting School, and has taken part in the Edinburgh Fringe.[15] She took singing lessons from a voice coach, Fred O'Neil,[9] and in 1999 she made her only previous recording, singing Cry Me a River for a charity CD funded by the local council to commemorate the Millennium.[16][11] O'Neil has said Boyle abandoned an audition for The X Factor because she believed people were being chosen for their looks, and that she almost abandoned her plan to enter Britain's Got Talent. He told The Scotsman: "I remember a phone call late last year when she said she was too old and that it was a young person's game". O'Neil persuaded her to go to the audition.[17]
Boyle's father died in the 1990s, and her siblings had left home, leaving Boyle to look after her ageing mother, who died in 2007 at the age of 91.[10] Boyle still lives in the family home, a four-bedroom council house, with her ten-year-old cat, Pebbles.[9] Her mother always encouraged her to enter local singing competitions, which she won several times, and tried to persuade her daughter to enter Britain's Got Talent, urging her to take the risk of singing in front of an audience larger than her parish church.[4] Boyle has said she did not feel ready to do it until after her mother's death, saying that it was that event which propelled her to go on Britain's Got Talent and seek a musical career as her way of paying a tribute to her mother.[9] Her performance on the show was the first time she had sung since then.[18][11][1]
Boyle is currently unemployed, and active as a volunteer with Our Lady of Lourdes, a Roman Catholic church in Blackburn.[19][12] She has never married; and during an interview just before she sang on the talent show, she said she had also "never been kissed" but later added "Oh, I was just joking around. It was just banter and it has been blown way out of proportion".[20][11]
[edit] Early recordings
Boyle recorded a version of "Cry Me a River" for a charity CD entitled "Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian", which was produced in 1999 at a school in Whitburn, West Lothian.[21][22] A reviewer for the West Lothian Herald & Post wrote at the time, "Susan Boyle’s heartbreaking rendition of ‘Cry Me a River’, which has been on repeat in my CD player ever since I got this CD..." [23] This recording was released onto the web in the week after April 11, 2009, and gained immediate acclamation, with the New York Post writing that this showed that Boyle was not a "one trick pony" and that the rarity of the CD imprint, with only 1,000 produced, would make them valuable collector's items.[24] Other media reaction was similarly positive, with Hello! magazine stating that the recording was a further illustration of the level of Boyle's talent, going on to write that the song "cements her status" as a singing star.[25]
An early demonstration tape containing "Cry Me a River" and a version of "Killing Me Softly with His Song" that Boyle prepared to send record companies and to local and national TV and radio talent competitions has been uncovered. Boyle gave a few copies to close friends.[26]

Silly Love Songs"

Chase Bank/JP Morgan -
Instant karma's gonna get Chase
There's a particularly infuriating and, in my opinion, totally off-base commercial bombarding my San Francisco hotel TV set. It's from JP Morgan Chase and is intended to introduce local Chase banking to the Bay Area.
That's cool. But, they've chosen a cover version of John Lennon's 'Instant Karma' as their background music. Now, I'd defer to far more knowledgeable Beatles' experts such as Syd Steinhardt and Julie Farin, but Lennon's song was all about the brevity of life. 'We all shine on. The earth, the moon and the stars,' wrote Lennon. His lyrics underscored the brevity of life and not, unless I'm badly mistaken, a celebration of it.
Chase, though, depicts a bunch of happy-go-lucky people jogging, swimming and cavorting in a carefree way set against Lennon's ominous warning that, 'Instant karma's gonna get you.'
Maybe Chase is just setting consumers' expectations and the instant karma in this case is the credit crunch? Maybe they're suggesting yes, go ahead and invest your hard-earned money in our retail banks. But, don't blame us if it disappears overnight.
Instant karma should 'get' whatever creative team created this loser of an ad campaign.

Robert Plant CBE Robert Plant has been appointed a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) on the Queen's New Years Honors list, marking the second time that a member of Led Zeppelin has received an official accolade from Queen Elizabeth. Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin founding member and guitarist, was awarded an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) in June 2005.
The tradition stretches nack to 1917. Honors are handed out twice a year, in June and at the New Year, and are awarded to people for all types of service, including the performing arts. The Queen's Honors "are bestowed in the name of Queen Elizabeth II and are recommended by a panel that considers suggestions from government departments and political parties as well as from members of the public."
FAST FACTS
There are five British orders of chivalry: Knight Grand Cross (GBE) or Dame Grand Cross (GBE) Knight Commander (KBE) or Dame Commander (DBE) Commander (CBE) Officer (OBE) Member (MBE)
Past recipients of the prestigious CBE include Eric Clapton, Brian May and David Gilmour.
In 1965 the Beatles -- John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr -- became the first pop stars to be honored by royalty, when they received the MBE, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. In 1969 Lennon returned his in protest of Britain's political involvement in Biafra and Vietnam.
A ROBERT PLANT-free LED ZEPPELIN look sure to tour this year and could even release a new album.
Axe Lord JIMMY PAGE’s manager Peter Mensch says Page, bassist JOHN PAUL JONES and drummer JASON BONHAM are ready to rock as soon as they find a frontman to replace Plant.
He said: “They have decided that if they can find a singer who fits their bill they’ll make a record and go on tour.
“Jimmy has played guitar professionally since he was 16. He likes being a musician. That’s what he does.”
