BILL KERN <beatlebill64@yahoo.com> wrote: I spent the weekend watching the 5 DVD documntary "A Long And Winding Road" I would like to share some thoughts on this program now that I have had some time to sit with it.
First off, if you are expecting tons of spectacular Beatle footage of the group performing, forget it. Most of the time that they are on the screen is either still photographs or interview footage. I will say however that they have found some film that I have never seen before! This 7 hour program is definitly not for the casual Beatle fan as they will probably be dissapointed by the lack of actual Beatle footage. If you are however a serious Beatle fan (as I suspect all of us on this board are) this has many fantastic interviews with people we have only seem short clips of, or not seen at all in any other programs. The most interesting interviews are with several employees of Brian Epstien and NEMS, members of The Quarreymen, Allan Williams, Tony Sheridan, Bill Harry and most incredible of all Julia Baird, John Lennon's half sister. She sheds a whole new light on John. We tend to think of him as the rebel, superstar Beatle, son, husband, father ect. but we never think of him as a family man in his childhood, playing with his sisters and living in his mother and step fathers house on weekends and such. I have always thought of John as an only child living with his Aunt Mimi, but this gives an entirely different point of view. You will have to hear Julia yourself, and I think you will be amazed.
The Beatles career as a famous band (1962-1970) is only on the last 2 discs. This of course means that the early career is extensivly covered on the first 3 discs. The only part that bothered me was that there were quite a few interviews with Hamburg pals who spoke no English and had subtitles. They sometimes talked too fast to follow. I found Alan Williams to have combed down a bit with the passage of time. He wasn't quite as boastful as usual and seemed to just take pride in having been some part in The Beatles story. Bill Harry (Mearsy Beat editor) took credit for several things like being the person who actually arranged the meeting between Brian Epstien and the Beatles. He basically said that the "My Bonnie" story was a load of rubish.
Disc 2 starts with a lovely tribute by George about how temporary life really is. Quite profetic in hidsight. Another golden moment for me was when John was talking about Brian's death. He said that the Maharesi said that they should forget about it and be happy, to which John say's "fucking idiot!" There were several other thins along the way that contradicted what I had thought before. One was that I had always been under the impression that John wrote Yellow Submarine for Ringo. Paul says that one night when he was about to drift off to sleep he suddenly got this idea for a song about peopel living in a submarine.
As I said their recording career really is only on the last 2 discs. Disc for covers the touring more than recording. On disc five they finally start covering the albums (before that they only mention singles and movies) starting with Seargent Pepper and sraight on through to Let It Be. Another nice thing was seeing the trailer for Let It Be. I have several tapes with lots of Beatle trailers, but none had this one.
Lastly, the disc of course ends up talking about the tragedy of John Lennon getting shot and includes some very touching interviews, easpecialy Julia. Right after this however, it is quite strange to see that there is a little bit more to the story as they then cover Georg'e passing. It occured to me watching this that it is the first major documentary to cover this part of the Beatles story. All in all, I highly recomment this set to any serious Beatle fan. It sheds new light on many facets of their career. BTW "We miss you George!" Bill Kern
As the owner of a video store I subscribe to an industry magazine called "Video Store Magazine". This past week's issue contained an ad that reads as follows:
THE UNAUTHORIZED DOCUMENTARIES OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ROCK 'N' ROLL BANDS OF OUR TIME
THE BEATLES-A LONG AND WINDING ROAD Intimate five-hour program about the lads from Liverpool who shook the world, changed history, and became part of our lives. THE ROLLING STONES-JUST FOR THE RECORD Five-hour program detailing every major event during the forty-year rock 'n' roll odyssey told by those who were there.
Both have a $49.98 suggested retail price. Order Date:Feb 24, 2003 (this is a pre-book date for advance store orders) Street Date:March 18, 2003 They are released by PASSPORT VIDEO:10520 Magnolia Blvd., North Hollywood CA 91601 (Phone 818-760-1500) They are each packaged in an outer slip-case containing either 5 VHS cassettes, or 5 DVD's. The cover of the Beatles box is the color painting of the group that was used by Vee-Jay Records on the picture cover to the single "Love Me Do", As for what the contents are, that is anybody's guess. Does any one else know? Bill |
