Sacked Beatle happy on his own By Andrew McGarry June 11, 2004
THE former Beatle wandered through Adelaide's shopper-packed Rundle Mall yesterday without anyone being the wiser. And Pete Best is quite happy with that.
Forty years after 300,000 squealing fans turned the City of Churches into the City of Moptops, the band's original drummer arrived in town for this weekend's inaugural Beatles Festival.
Best was 18 when he joined the group, providing the rhythm section for gigs in Liverpool and elsewhere before going on a breakthrough tour to Hamburg in 1962. A short time later he was gone from the group, however, replaced in mysterious circumstances by Ringo Starr in pop music's Garden Of Eden.
So what really happened?
"Wish I knew, to be quite honest," he said.
"I was called into Brian's (Epstein, The Beatles manager) office and told I was being replaced by Ringo, and told that Ringo was joining the band - there was no forewarning. The reason that was given was that I wasn't a good enough drummer, and that basically didn't make sense."
Best admits the time after his sacking was one of heartache and soulsearching. "You're the number one drummer with the number one band, you've got the recording contract, we recorded in Germany, everything is going great, and then for no apparent reason you're out," he said.
"You sit back and say to yourself, 'if I was still there, I don't think there would have been any difference'."
Best played six more years with various groups before quitting music to be with his family, working first in a bakery and then as the antithesis of a rock star - a civil servant.
Then, after 20 years out of the limelight, he was convinced to play on stage at a Beatles convention, kickstarting a new career. Today he spends up to seven months of the year on the road, doing one-man shows, talks and gigs with The Pete Best Band in venues around the globe.
"At the end of the day, if people remember me as part of a legend, thank you. If it's (as) Pete Best the normal guy, then thank you anyway," Best said.
This weekend's festival marks the 40th anniversary of wild scenes on the city's streets when 300,000 turned out to see the band at an Adelaide Town Hall reception on June 12, 1964.

Re: Alistair Taylor -- Brian Epstein's Mr. Fixit -- has died Автор:Lemon LennonДата: 11.06.04 11:28:26
ALISTAIR Taylor, the man known as the Beatles Mr Fix It, has died.
The 68-year-old played a key role in the music career of the Fab Four.
He died at his home in Derbyshire yesterday.
Mr Taylor was dubbed Mr Fix It by Beatles manager Brian Epstein and the band members themselves.
He earned the title by always being able to iron out the details for the musicians, from hiring a limousine to organising holidays.
Born in Runcorn, Cheshire, he started work for NEMS record store in Liverpool and came to the attention of Mr Epstein.
Eventually he became his right hand man.
He was there when the Beatles signed their contracts and went with Mr Epstein to hear the band play at the Cavern in 1961.
One of his triumphs was resolving the copyright issues around the photographs of famous faces on Peter Blake's cover for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The show was attended by many politician, business and showbiz people in the VIP seats, but the most important visitors were Princess Alexandra and Prince Joachim (brother of the Crowne Prince).
Paul McCartney started his one-hour sound-check at 4.30pm. Songs heard at the soundcheck: "Honey Don't, "Coming Up," "C Moon," "Lady Madonna."
The concert got underway at 8.30 pm with the preshow which the audience found quite amusing. It set the party tone for the rest of the evening and raised the excitement level from the start when the curtains parted and Paul blasted into "Jet." The 20,000 plus crowd rocked the night away with the band not missing a note.
The setlist was the same and the 'scripted' dialogue by Paul and the band members. Paul did speak in Danish thanking the audience with "Mange Tak" (thank you very much) and "Tusind Tak!" (Thousand cheers!) "God aften Horsens!" (Good Evening Horsens)
"Jeg har ikke ligefrem legede indevжrende sang indtil indevжrende rejse."(I haven't actually played this song until this tour.)
For the intro to "Get Back" he asked the crowd, "Do you want to get back? I want to get back."
Paul did the "Yellow Submarine" singalong after "All Things Must Pass" and noticed yellow hats in the audience and commented that they were "...'Yellow Submarine' hats!"
Paul was in great voice sounding like he did when he was with the Beatles and the most impressive numbers were, "She's a Woman," "Drive My Car," and "Penny Lane." But crowd went absolutely crazy for "Get Back", "I've Got A Feeling" and "Helter Skelter" the crowd went absolutely crazy. When Paul's intro to "Helter Skelter" was "Let's get dirty!"
Rusty's language translator said to the crowd in Danish. "Behage huske at det er lovstridig hen til opstille jeres gummi ind under den stol heri biograf!" (Please remember that it's illegal to place your gum under the chairs in this cinema!)
Abe did his usual intro before "Live and Let Die," not speaking in Danish saying, "Heeellooo Horsens! ARE YOU READY TO ROCK...?"
Paul carried the Danish flag out for the encore. A fan threw a "Sgt. Pepper's" album to Paul which he signed and threw back. Before he left the stage he said, "See you next time!"
