Now 20, Santana Top Chart Two collections of pop superstars flex their chart muscle
News flash: The people of America like the hits. And, according to the latest Nielsen SoundScan figures, they flocked to their local record stores this past week and bought up 378,000 copies of the twentieth installment of Now That's What I Call Music!, which features radio-friendly singles from the likes of hip-hop heroine Missy Elliott, original American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson and Scottish buzz rockers Franz Ferdinand. Right behind the chart-topping Now! 20 is another various-artists record of sorts, Santana's latest, All That I Am, which finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist joined by a new generation of hit-makers including Joss Stone, Los Lonely Boys and Sean Paul. All moved 142,000 copies to come in at Number Two, impressive but so far the album hasn't quite reached the heights of Santana's previous two star-studded affairs, 1999's Grammy-sweeping Supernatural and 2002's Shaman, which both hit Number One.
Nickelback found another hefty batch of people who don't read their reviews, as the Canadian rockers moved 101,000 copies of their bona fide chart powerhouse (and critical punching bag) All the Right Reasons. The band's fourth album hangs tough at Number Three in its fifth week in stores. Speaking of staying power, after twenty-two weeks, the Black Eyed Peas remain in the Top Five with Monkey Business (Number Four; 86,000).
Blasting onto the charts this week with -- you guessed it -- more hits are punk and rock veterans Blink-182 and John Fogerty, who placed at Number Six and Thirteen with their respective new best-of collections. Slipknot and Nirvana also got in the action, scoring with alternate versions of previously released songs on 9.0: Live (Seventeen; 42,000) and Sliver -- Best of the Box (Twenty-one; 38,000).
The chart's biggest dose of new blood came in the form of Third Day -- Christian rock's answer to Skynyrd. Their sixth album, Wherever You Are, moved 63,000 copies to enter at Number Eight, the Atlanta band's first Top Ten.
Next week, the Beastie Boys, the Eurythmics and Cyndi Lauper look to seize the chart with repackaged hits of their own, but Number One will be all about 50 Cent, thanks to the release of his new movie soundtrack, Get Rich or Die Tryin'.
This week's Top Ten: Now That's What I Call Music! Volume 20; Santana's All That I Am; Nickelback's All the Right Reasons; Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business; Destiny's Child's #1's; Blink-182's Greatest Hits; Martina McBride's Timeless; Third Day's Wherever You Are; Rod Stewart's Thanks for the Memory . . . The Great American Songbook IV; Ashlee Simpson's I Am Me.

Gabriel Eyes Genesis Original frontman says reunion talks are imminent
Will the Lamb lie down on Broadway once more? For years, the former members of Genesis have said that they are ready, willing and able to reform the group at original frontman Peter Gabriel's whim -- and for years Gabriel has adamantly refused. Until now. "The odds [of a Genesis reunion] are better now than before," Gabriel tells Rolling Stone. "We're going to have the conversation." Aside from a one-off concert in 1982, Gabriel has not stood on stage with the classic five-man Genesis lineup since the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour ended in May of 1975. Phil Collins, who had played drums since joining the group prior to its third album in 1971, took over as vocalist in 1976 and lifted the British art rockers to stadiums all over the world. Collins quit the group after 1992's We Can't Dance tour to focus on his successful solo career. Remaining members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recruited former Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson for the 1997 release Calling All Stations, which fared so poorly that Genesis were forced to cancel a tour of American theaters. The group quietly folded in 1998.
Since then, a large cult of fans (particularly of the Gabriel era) have kept the Genesis flame alive. Phil Collins played with Genesis tribute band the Musical Box -- who recreate the Gabriel era with frightening precision -- when they visited his hometown of Geneva, Switzerland recently. Earlier this week, Collins reaffirmed his desire to drum again for the real thing during a Tel Aviv press conference. Last month, guitarist Steve Hackett told the Chicago Sun-Times that he received a phone call from Genesis management. "There's a movement to put us all together again," he said. "I do think it will happen."
Notorious perfectionist Gabriel warns that any reunion concert would require serious preparation time. "When we got back together in 1982, I don't think we rehearsed," he says. "To really do it properly, we'd have to take more time. It's quite a commitment."
When pushed to definitely say if the group is reuniting, Gabriel remains coy: "I wouldn't put money on it . . . yet."

Coldplay Plan Winter Tour British rockers launch site to unveil second leg of "X&Y" trek
Coldplay will launch the second leg of their North American tour behind their chart-topping third album X&Y at the end of January, but they are making fans work to find out where they are playing. To announce the tour dates, the British rockers have launched a Web site, Talkthetour.com, which includes a locked version of the twenty-six-date itinerary. Each time 33,000 people visit the site, Coldplay will reveal a new date with ticket on-sale information.
In addition to uniquely announcing tour information, the Web site will also stream the band's latest video, for the single "Talk," for fans who register. As another incentive, registered fans will receive pre-sale information and the chance to receive a phone call from singer Chris Martin. A majority of tickets will go on sale November 19th.
The tour opens in Seattle, and takes the band through large, indoor arenas. "The gigs have got really big," guitarist Jonny Buckland told Rolling Stone about the increasing venue sizes. "The temptation is to put in all the cheesy moves and run around and get down on your knees and shit. We try to do what we do -- but just slightly bigger."
Currently, the band has unlocked fourteen tour dates.
Coldplay tour dates:
1/25: Seattle, Key Arena (on sale 11/19) 1/26: Vancouver, BC, GM Place (on sale 11/21) 1/30: Sacramento, CA, Arco Arena (on sale 11/19) 2/1: San Jose, CA, HP Pavilion (on sale 11/19) 2/19: Denver, Pepsi Center (on sale 11/19) 2/22: Auburn Hills, MI, Palace of Auburn Hills (on sale 11/19) 2/23: Louisville, KY, Freedom Hall (on sale 11/19) 2/27: Oklahoma City, OK, Ford Center (on sale 11/19) 3/4: Orlando, T.D. Waterhouse Centre (on sale 12/3) 3/20: Cleveland, Quicken Loans Arena (on sale 11/19) 3/22: Toronto, Air Canada Center (on sale 11/19) 4/3: Manchester, NH, Verizon Wireless Arena (on sale 11/19) 4/4: Uncasville, CT, Mohegan Sun Arena (on sale 11/19) 4/6: Philadelphia, Wachovia Center (on sale 11/19)
