"I spent a weekend with the Beatles when they travelled to attend a course with the Maharishi at Bangor University. It ended in tragedy with the news that their manager Brian Epstein had been found dead. I never got to know John - the great touring days of the Beatles were over before my career took off. "
Stephen Shakeshaft Paul and Linda "Another picture showing my fascination with dressing rooms and behind the scenes. This was Paul's first time back in Liverpool with his group Wings after the Beatles broke up. Linda had just joined the band. This was in their dressing room at the Empire but it was just like walking into their lounge. The children were rushing up and down the corridor, playing hide and seek. It was a very orchestrated and professional performance but backstage Paul was just a dad with his wife. They are both very relaxed in the picture."

Jane Bown, of The Observer, is many people's favourite photographer. She is also among the least affected, admitting to no technique other than an uncluttered approach and a firm belief in the use of natural light. Such immediacy, coupled with a unique sensitivity towards her subjects, has resulted in a lifetime of intuitive and expressive images. This book selects from the whole range of her photography during the forty-five years she has worked for The Observer, starting with scenes typical of the Fifties and ending with others typical of the Nineties. The portraits, sandwiched between these and forming the body of the book, themselves range widely - from such proven classics as those of Samuel Beckett, Mick Jagger and John Betjeman, to early studies of the Beatles and recent studies of Alan Bennett, Archbishop Tutu, Boy George, Woody Allen - among a great variety of famous personalities in the worlds of music, literature, stage, screen, politics and the arts. Singly and collectively, they reveal the compassion, perceptiveness, often humour, of Jane’s vision both as public and as private observer.

PORTRAIT BY DEZO HOFFMAN Huge 16x20 1st Generation Silver Gelatin Print (w/ Studio Stamp)
This unique print was pulled in 1983 by Dezo Hoffman, photographer extraordinaire, specifically for use in Hoffman’s published book on Lennon. He was helped in this endeavor by Alan Robertson, one of England’s master monochrome hand printer and processors. Most of Dezo’s stunning photos were taken on the run. Which is why, in 1983, Alan was hired to coax the best possible print from negs that were shot under less than perfect conditions and never with the use of a flash. This lot comes to us from the collection of Alan Robertson (recently sold in London), who retained certain of the extra Hoffman prints with Hoffman’s blessing after the collation which produced the Lennon book (with Dezo’s Wardour Street studio stamp on the reverse, as here). Hoffman and Robertson became extremely close in the years before Dezo’s death in 1986. This particular print is not only a masterpiece, it is a large masterpiece with an image of 16” by 20.” This silver gelatin first generation print is in virtually perfect condition. It draws the eye with almost hypnotic intensity. A wonderful item, framed and matted to the highest standard.
