Famous Beatle scene is re-created

All that was missing were the sounds of the famous ballad Yesterday, as the Beatles made a surprise appearance on the balcony at Liverpool's historic Town Hall yesterday.

More than 40 years ago the Fab Four brought the city to a standstill as they waved to adoring fans crowded the whole length of nearby Castle Street.

Yesterday the Beatles - or at least wax work models of Liverpool's most famous sons - made a nostalgic return.

Amused onlookers grabbed their camera phones to capture the re-enactment for posterity.

John, Paul, George and Ringo ruled the world with their songs, and at the time they were embarking on a film career with the release of their full-length movie, A Hard Day's Night.

On July 10, 1964 the Beatles headed home for the premiere of their film at the Odeon in London Road.

Ten hours earlier the first fans had started to congregate in Castle Street for their heroes to make their famed public appearance on the balcony of the town hall.

Their fans were not disappointed as they waved to the massive crowd in the streets below. It was a scene photographed and recorded for history.

The wax models, made in the 1960s for the world famous Madame Tussaud Wax Museum in London, go on display for the first time today (Weds) at The Beatles Story Exhibition at the Albert Dock where they are destined to become the main attraction.

Liverpool's current Lord Mayor Cllr Joan Lang and Beatles Story director Jerry Goldman helped recreate yesterday's trip down memory lane.

Mr Goldman said: "We are so lucky to have these models on display at the Beatles Story. They were bought by a private collector and we have them on permanent loan. We have no idea of their value, but to us they are priceless. Another set of wax models, and they are not as good, and with a lesser history then this set, were sold for £80,000 ($147,455)."

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Joan Lang said: "The Beatles are an important part of Liverpool's tourism, without the Beatles' there is no doubt there would be far fewer tourists visiting Liverpool.

The majority of the tourists are Americans and the Japanese."

The Lord Mayor, a lifelong Beatles fan, admitted that she had never visited the original Cavern Club in the Beatlemania era, adding "it was because she was too old", but she has visited the club since.

She told the Daily Post she remembered going to the Odeon to watch "A Hard Days's Night" and really enjoyed the film.

Premiere was Beatles' proudest ever moment

The Beatles came to Merseyside for the Liverpool premiere of their film 'A Hard Day's Night' for charity on July 10, 1964, four days after the world premiere took place in London.

The band were greeted at Liverpool Airport by 3,000 screaming fans. The night saw the biggest ever security arrangement that the Town Hall had seen to keep all the guests safe.

Guests at the Town Hall included Cavern Club owner Ray McFall and DJ Bob Wooler. Appearing in the original balcony scene were then Lord Mayor Alderman Louis Caplan and Lady Mayoress Mrs Fanny Bodeker.

En route to the premiere the road was blocked at least a dozen times by surging crowds, who broke through the police lines and crash barriers that had been put up to prevent the crowds from getting too close to the Beatles.

St John Ambulance Brigade treated 381 casualties, the vast majority of these were teenage girls who had fainted.

The Beatles summed up their reception, "It's the greatest reception we have had anywhere in the world, it beats our reception at Adelaide - our previous best - by miles. This is the proudest moment of our lives, it's staggering."

McCartney receives tourism 'Oscar'

Sir Paul McCartney and his native city of Liverpool have been named joint winners of a major tourism "Oscar" presented on Wednesday night.
The former Beatle and his home town took the outstanding contribution to tourism prize at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence presented in London.

On learning of the award Sir Paul said: "I'm honoured to receive this award, particularly because of the Liverpool connection.

"It's great to think that in some small way I've done something to help tourism for the place of my birth, which I'm so proud of."

England Marketing Advisory Board chairman Hugh Taylor said: "Sir Paul McCartney has done great things for his home city of Liverpool, which has been completely transformed and seen visitor numbers more than double in the last five years.

"For many visitors, the emotional draw is that it is the home of the Beatles, and while Sir Paul modestly describes himself as 'just this kid from Liverpool', his influence on the success of Liverpool's tourism cannot be understated.

"He remains one of the most successful musicians and composers in popular music history."

The awards are organised by the VisitBritain organisation and the Caravan Club.

Artist Peter Blake’s biggest exhibition in 25 years opened at the Tate in Liverpool this week end. The show will run until 23 September.

A number of Blake’s most famous pieces will be on display including several of his Beatles works.

He will perhaps be forever known as the man who designed the cover of Sgt Pepper but his recent work has also included work for Oasis.

The collection on display dates back to the 1950s.
