Liverpool dedicates Quarrymen landmark

A little known landmark in the history of The Beatles will be launched onto Liverpool's tourist map with the unveiling of a plaque in Kensington.

A community-inspired commemorative plaque has been installed by Kensington Regeneration at the site of the Percy Philips recording studio in Kensington - where the Quarry Men, who later became The Beatles, made their first recording. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison produced their version of Buddy Holly's That'll be The Day in the Kensington studio, in July 1958.

The plaque has been installed as part of a project to commemorate historical events in the area. The unveiling takes place on Friday August 26 during Liverpool№s International Beatles Week Festival and will be attended by John Lennon№s half sister Julia Baird. The plaque will be unveiled by BBC Radio Merseyside presenter Billy Butler, who was born in Kensington.

The Quarry Men were a little known group when they first walked into the recording studio at 38, Kensington in July 1958. But the rest, as they say, is history.

The Kensington recording is featured within the Beatles Anthology Volume 1, which was released in 1995.

Many other local artists also recorded at the studio between 1955 and 1969 including Billy Fury, The Merseybeats, The Remo Four and Ken Dodd.

Local BBC historian Frank Carlyle who has delivered a series of Kensington Heritage Workshops, said, "This is a fantastic development for Kensington; the Beatles are recognised across the world as being synonymous with our great city and this new initiative puts the Kensington community on the tourist map for Liverpool."

The plaque is the first in a series of community inspired unveilings funded by Kensington Regeneration, aimed at raising awareness of key historical and cultural events in the Kensington area.

Other historical events to be highlighted include a visit by Fredrick Franklin the world famous dance choreographer and a tour by Buffalo Bill and Indians to Tournament Hall in Edge Lane which was seen by nearly 250,000 people in 1896.

The Quarry Men recorded That'll be the Day on July 14, 1958 and as they did not have enough money to pay for the disc, John was unable to take a copy home for his mother. The Quarry Men's version is believed to be the world№s rarest recording.

In March 1959, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison saw Buddy Holly and The Crickets perform at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and were inspired to change the name of their band to The Beatles as they thought The Crickets was a great name for a band.

Surreal link between Dali and Lennon Aug 22 2005Surreal link between Dali and Lennon Aug 22 2005
By Philip Key, Daily Post

SALVADOR DALI Meets the Beatles is the latest - and last - exhibition at Liverpool's Mathew Street Gallery. The gallery is set to close after this exhibition by photographer Robert Whitaker.

Whitaker's 1960s images of The Beatles were taken at a time when their manager Brian Epstein was also Whitaker's manager.

But did the Beatles ever meet the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali in real life? Just one did.

"I introduced Dali to Pete Brown in Paris," explains Whitaker,, in Liverpool for the Saturday opening of his exhibition. Brown, also part of the Epstein team, later took Dali to meet John Lennon in his New York apartment.

It seems Dali was a big Lennon fan. "He kept a photograph of John hanging from a coat hanger on his wall," says Whitaker.

His Beatles photographs were taken over a three year period at the request of Epstein. His Dali photographs came about through a more personal invitation.

At the age of 16 he had been given a book by his parents, cut it up to make a collage, and sent the result to Dali. An amused Dali suggested he drop by if he was ever in Spain.

But it was eight years before he made the trip and that through art historian Douglas Cooper who was planning a book on Dali. The first thing Dali said to Whitaker was, "You've been ill". He was right, Whitaker had been unwell.

But the photographer caught Dali's attention by promising to photograph the inside of his head. "How are you going to do that?" asked Dali. "By photographing every part of you, your ears, nostrils, eyes ..." explained Whitaker.

Dali was game for it and many of the close-ups of the Dali physiognomy can be seen in the new exhibition.

His wide open mouth is featured often along with a shot up his nose, one ear and his hands - "People never photograph an artist's hands," says Whitaker.

His subject often suggested poses and Whitaker found him an easy man to photograph. "He told me he was a whore for the camera."

Whitaker, who took most of his photographs at Dali's Spanish home between 1967 and 1972, found the artist a delightful companion, mostly because Whitaker as a photographer was interested in art and enjoyed Dali's sometimes bizarre conversation.

Dali once told him he could photograph God by using a special pole and a copper plate camera. Alas, the photograph was never achieved but Whitaker says Dali made sense of the idea.

Whitaker was not above being a little bizarre himself, once cutting up his photographs and sending them out to sea in a box.

His Dali pictures are now in a new book which Whitaker has published himself at £40 in a small print run of just 5,000, half pre-sold to London's Hayward Gallery. Copies are available at the Mathew Street Gallery where his Beatles photographs are also on show.

* SALVADOR DALI Meets the Beatles runs until September 4 at the Mathew Street Gallery. Opening hours Mon-Sat, 10am-5pm, Sunday 11am-4pm. 0151 236 80676.

Original Epstein letters given to Beatles Story Aug 23 2005Original Epstein letters given to Beatles Story Aug 23 2005

PROFESSOR Rex Makin, the Epstein family solicitor during the height of Beatlemania, has donated two letters to Liverpool's Beatles Story exhibition.

One, from 1964, is a formal request asking for a reference for NEMS from Mr Makin to the London County Council for an employment agency license for Nems employment agency

The second letter is hand written and was sent to Rex in 1957. It is very personal and refers to Rex Makin's engagement. It shows an insight into Brian's caring and emotional character

Both letters go on permanent display at the Beatles Story from Tuesday 23rd August. They are sure to be a big draw to the many Beatles fans expected in Liverpool for Beatles week and the Mathew Street Festival

Louise Collier, Operations Manager of the Beatles Story, said: "I was delighted that Prof Makin has offered the Beatles Story the opportunity to display these valuable items for the enjoyment of the fans."

Beatles memorabilia unveiled

An exhibition of newly-acquired Beatles memorabilia is being unveiled at the Museum of Liverpool Life.

The items include John Lennon's high-collar suit made for the 1965 film Help and a handbill from a 1963 Valentines Day gig.

Also included in the Collecting the Beatles exhibition is a photograph of the group dedicated to the girls at Childwall Valley High School, in Liverpool.

Curator Kay Docherty said: "A group of friends regularly went to see the Beatles at The Cavern lunchtime sessions.

"The girls recommended the Beatles to TV producers, helping to secure appearances on the BBC's Tuesday Rendezvous and Talent Spot programmes in 1962.

"We would like to hear from anyone who went to Childwall Valley High School around this time and was part of this group of friends."

Beatle City 2005 Aug 30 2005Beatle City 2005 Aug 30 2005

THOUSANDS of music lovers have made this year's Mathew Street festival the biggest and best.

Early predictions are that this year's event had record-breaking attendances and brought more than £25m into the city.

Early morning rain gave way to warm summer sunshine yesterday afternoon and around 330,000 festival-goers enjoyed live music from chart toppers and Brit award winners McFly, Merseyside band Amsterdam, James Bourne and Lemar.

Tribute bands took to the other stages around the city and live music blasted out from many city centre pubs.

A spokesman for Liverpool Culture Company said: "The festival has been fabulous. McFly went down well although the wet weather in the morning did affect attendance. The sun shone after that and it became very busy."

Joe and Dot Shaw, of Anfield, are Mathew Street regulars.

Mr Shaw said: "We are both big Beatles fans. We were 30 when they started and we are 75 now! I like the stages all across the city centre but I think they should stick to the music and not have so many rides."

James Scraggs, 67, and his wife Elizabeth, 71, of Walton, caught the ferry to Wirral where for the first time in festival history a stage was set up.

Mud is all you need to repair Paul Sep 16 2005Mud is all you need to repair Paul Sep 16 2005

ALL you need is mud - and a famous Beatles sculpture will be complete again.

A cherub, representing ex-Beatle Paul McCartney on the famous Arthur Dooley Mathew Street tribute to the Fab Four, has been recovered 30 years after it was stolen.

The model just needs a fresh coating of clay and a lick of paint and it can take its place once again alongside John, George and Ringo in the arms of the famous Madonna statue.

But Paul's recovery is just as mysterious as his original disappearance in 1975, a year after the late Dooley's "Four Lads Who Shook the World" statue was first unveiled.

Merseyside woke to find that the baby depicting Paul had been stolen.

Bill Heckle, director of Beatles tourism company Cavern City Tours, said: "The Beatles guides joked that Paul had got his wings and flown in a reference to his then band Wings."

Fast forward 30 years and Bill got an anonymous phone call from a mystery man offering to return the missing statue.

"It was out of the blue and he asked if I was aware that the statue of Paul had gone missing many years ago.

"The caller offered his effusive apologies and said the statue had been in his garage for many years. "He said it was as a result of a ridiculous prank and, if I went to the Cavern, I would find the missing statue outside there in a plastic bag. Sure enough it was."

Now Bill is appealing for help to restore the statue, so Paul can get back to where he once belonged.

"It would not take much to restore," he added.

Cavern Walks to commemorate Lennon's 65th birthday Oct 4 2005

A WEEK-long tribute to John Lennon will take place in Cavern Walks to commemorate the late Beatle's 65th birthday.

The New Liverpool Beatles Appreciation Society is inviting people to lay flowers and cards at the statue of the pop group for seven days starting from 10am on Sunday.

Society founder John James Chambers hopes the messages at the Mathew Street shopping centre will reflect Lennon's preachings about world peace.

He said: "Because of all the unrest in the world, the violence and the terrorism, we want to say, 'give peace a chance' and 'all you need is love'.

"We want to show the world that in Liverpool we are still using many of the Beatles' messages, but mainly those from John Lennon's songs."

Mr Chambers sent out a plea for messages to be sent from the Beatles, their families, and people who worked for the group's record label, Apple.

Hotel's logo should strike a chord with Beatles fansHotel's logo should strike a chord with Beatles fans

THE logo for the new Hard Days Night hotel depicts the unusual opening chord of the Beatles' 1964 track from which it takes its name.

The precise arrangement of the chord has apparentlycaused controversy among the band's more obsessive fans for decades.

But the accepted consensus is that it is a "G7 Suspended".

In guitar tablature the chord is illustrated using four dots to show where the musician's fingers should be placed.

Bill Heckle said: "Beatles fans love finding lots of different meanings in things, and I just know people are going to love this logo.

"The way the chord is arranged is exactly the same as the Beatles' line-up, with George and Paul on the left, Ringo on his own slightly behind, and John on the right.

Прямые авиарейсы Ливерпуль - Нью-Арк со следующего года.

The first direct flights between New York's Newark International Airport and Liverpool, England, will be offered by British airline Flyglobespan from next year.

The airline has announced that a daily service will be launched on May 25, 2007, with tickets available to purchase from £149 one-way in coach or £299 one-way for business-class seating. These prices include taxes and charges.

"How fitting that there will soon be flights from [Liverpool's] John Lennon Airport to New York," said the former Beatle's widow, Yoko Ono.

"As you all know, John had a tremendous fondness for both of these cities," Ono continued.

"He would have been delighted that now there will be a direct flight between [them]. It's a great day for both Liverpudlians and New Yorkers."

Flyglobespan already operates a UK to U.S. link, with its Glasgow to Orlando route one of the airline's more popular long-haul services. There is also a Flyglobespan service between Toronto and Manchester, England.
