ROD STEWART JOINED BY ELTON JOHN, CHAKA KHAN & DIANA ROSS ON NEXT 'GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK' ALBUM

Rod Stewart has once again roped in a few friends for the next installment of his Great American Songbook album series. Thanks For The Memory...The Great American Songbook: Volume IV, which comes out October 18th, features Stewart alone and in duets with Elton John on "Makin' Whoopee," with Chaka Khan on Sam Cooke's "You Send Me," and with Diana Ross on "I've Got A Crush On You." In addition, the album features guest spots from jazz players including singer-guitarist George Benson, trumpeters Chris Botti and Roy Hargrove, and sax player Dave Koz. Stewart said, "The key to it all is trying to put my own stamp on these songs, because they have been done so many times -- just not by someone who sang 'Hot Legs' and 'Maggie May'! Since this album will be the last one for now, I wanted to make it really special."

Stewart's last album, 2004's Stardust...The Great American Songbook: Volume III, included guest turns from Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and Koz, while 2003's As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook, Volume II featured Cher and Queen Latifah.

Stewart will follow the new album up with a box set of all his standards releases -- 2002's It Had To Be You...The Great American Songbook, 2003's As Time Goes By...The Great American Songbook, Volume II, and last year's Stardust...The Great American Songbook: Volume III. The four-disc package, which is titled The Great American Songbook, comes out November 15th.

Stardust...The Great American Songbook: Volume III was the first album in Stewart's career to enter the chart at Number One, and also the first one to earn him a Grammy award.

Stewart's got a run of shows booked in the U.K. in December.

ROD STEWART SAYS DUETS WERE FABRICATED ON NEW 'AMERICAN SONGBOOK' DISC

Rod Stewart, who released Thanks for the Memory ... The Great American Songbook Vol. IV this week, says that although he duets with heavyweights such as Diana Ross, Chaka Khan and Elton John on the new collection, the duos were never actually in the same room during the recording process. Stewart explained to Billboard, "That give-and-take is there, swear to God. When I go into the studio, I always pretend that Diana Ross is there. I can close my eyes, drink a glass of wine, and I pretend she's standing next to me." The disc features Stewart dueting with Ross on "I've Got A Crush On You," Chaka Khan on "You Send Me," and longtime friend Elton John on a "camp" version of "Makin' Whoopee."

Stewart joked that it was a good thing he and John weren't recording eyeball to eyeball: "Although I've known Elton for years, it would've probably taken us hours to get settled down -- because we would've been so excited and giggling and touching each other up the bottom. It would've taken us ages to get settled."

A box set featuring all four volumes of Stewart's American Songbook discs will be released on November 15th.

Stewart has said that his next project will be a long-delayed r&b collection. He told us that despite what type of music he records, getting airplay is still tough for an older artist: "You're running up against, you know, the airplay situation. They don't seem to want to play anybody that's over 35 anymore, you know, and even over 30. I'm not complaining. You know, I think we've had a really good run at it -- the people that came along in the early '70s and are still here, like Elton and (David) Bowie and myself--and I don't think anybody can complain if they're playing other people on the radio."

Rod Stewart's fiancée, Penny Lancaster, gave birth to the couple's first child early Sunday morning in London. Their son weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Stewart, who has six other children from previous relationships, assisted in the natural birth. "Both Penny and our baby son are gorgeous, healthy and doing well," the rocker said in a statement.
