The Roger Waters Concert, Neve Shalom - Wahat al-Salam - some pictures
22 June 2006

The Roger Waters’ concert was a wild success. A beautiful harmony of sound and visuals. The audience loved it, and we in Neve Shalom Wahat al-Salam feel very grateful.

After completing the Dark Side of the Moon, and before beginning on The Wall, Waters praised "the peace village" (winning loud cheers) and expressed his hope that "this generation of Israelis would tear down all the walls and make peace with their neighbours."

We’ll have more to say about the visit and concert later. But here, in the meantime, are some photos from the concert.

YEAH YEAH YEAH

YEAH YEAH YEAH

- By John M. James

The moon's turned pink again with a “perfect storm” of projects revolving around Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon from 1973, led by a new interpretation of the album and culminating in Roger Waters' fall tour of the United States, performing the album in its entirety. Following up on their recent Back Against the Wall tribute, earlier this month Purple Pyramid Records released Return To the Dark Side of the Moon, with an incestuous who's-who of star power boasting Adrian Belew, Colin Moulding of XTC, Tommy Shaw of Styx, John Weaton of Asia, Gary Green of Gentle Giant, Robby Krieger of The Doors, and dig this - actor Malcolm McDowell. Another song-for-song reincarnation of the album is due next week from Easy Star Records, with the release of the Easy Star All-Stars' Dub Side of the Moon live DVD, following up on 2003's studio CD of the same name. More upcoming DVD buzz surrounds the July 11 release of Pulse, the previously VHS-only document of Pink Floyd's 1994 tour, featuring the album performed live at London's Earls Court. The Columbia Records two-DVD reissue is packed with bonus features, including the band's induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, backstage footage, and handfuls of rare screen films originally projected behind the band during their 1994 and 1997 tours. Need mo' Moon? Put on your thinking cap and dig deep into editor Russell Reising's brainy opus, Speak To Me: The Legacy of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. At 250 pages, and worthy of a master's thesis in Advanced Rockology, the book was published earlier this year as a part of Ashgate's Popular and Folk Music Series. From the stadium rock aesthetics in 1973 to the urban myth of synching the album to a mute playback of The Wizard of Oz, Reising has collected a series of immaculately researched essays that may baffle as well as enlighten, each swooning in academic fever, viewing the album through the eyeglass of the tonal, political, or mythic - even the ideas of Lithuanian philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. Other food for thought includes Dark Side cover versions based on stages of the moon, the album's influence on Radiohead's OK Computer, and an interview with Mike Gordon of Phish... Lemmy Kilmister's unmistakable growl has a new home in The Head Cat, laying down his Motorhead bass for an acoustic guitar and harmonica alongside drummer Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats and multi-instrumentalist Danny B. Harvey of the Rockats. This new rockabilly trio storms through a Buddy Holly heavy set list on next week's release of Fool's Paradise on the Rock-A-Billy / Cleopatra Records imprint, also covering Jimmy Reed's “You Got Me Dizzy,” Johnny Cash's “Big River,' Carl Perkins' “Matchbox,” and Wayne Walker's “Cut Across Shorty,” a hit for both Eddie Cochran and Rod Stewart. A DVD is also available, Rockin' the Cat Club: Live from the Sunset Strip, with guest Johnny Bowler of the Guana Bats... The tasteful, cultured ear of That Subliminal Kid, DJ Spooky, has crafted the ultimate rocksteady collection after being let loose in the vaults of Trojan Records' nearly four decades of “tighten up” bliss. Rocking degrees in French literature and philosophy, the man knows his musical metempsychosis, as these seminal rock steady grooves that propelled the Trojan brand as the DJ sound of Jamaica resonate down the timeline of underground and popular music. Due this coming Tuesday, the Sanctuary Records set, In Fine Style: 50,000 Volts of Trojan Records, is a perfect starting off point for the uninitiated, with 34 tracks from King Tubby, U-Roy, Desmond Dekker, Winston Williams and more, spread over two CD's. Highlights include the psychedelic mysticism of Augustus Pablo's “Lama Lava” and Dave Barker giving James Brown a run for his grunts in “Funky, Funky Reggae.” A few cover surprises turn up as well, with The Israelites' take on the Beatles' “Come Together,” Susan Cadogan turning up the heat on the Peggy Lee hit “Fever,” and B.B. Seaton's slow cooker of the timeless “Summertime.”

Roger Waters performs in `Oasis of Peace` village in Israel

Ещё по Израилю...

Tel Aviv, June 25: Pink Floyd`s frontman Roger Waters chose to have his solo concert in Israel at a village called `Oasis of Peace`, a mixed Arab-Jewish community living side by side.

The concert was originally planned for a Tel Aviv stadium but Waters changed the location to the peace village near Jerusalem, following criticism by fans in Britain and in the Palestinian territories.

When news came about Waters` expected performance in Israel, a group of Palestinian artists from the West Bank sent a letter to the internationally renowned rock star, urging him to cancel his planned performance in Israel.

The appeal, sent in March by a Union of Palestinian Artists, said: "How can the artist whose name around the world was for many years associated with breaking walls of injustice be in any way complicit with the monstrosity of Israel`s wall, declared illegal by the International Court of Justice at the Hague?"

Waters has recently expressed strong opposition to Israel`s separation barrier.

He is the writer of the famous song `Another Brick in the Wall`, which protests all walls of oppression and subjugation and calls to bring all walls down.

Upon his arrival to the region, Waters toured a segment of the barrier separating Israel and the West Bank at the town of Bethlehem.

Waters, who inspired the Pink Floyd`s iconic album `The Wall`, scrawled `Tear Down the Wall` on the concrete panels of Israel`s barrier.

In his reply to the Palestinian protesters, Waters wrote that the decision to move the concert to a more ethnically diverse village was made `as a gesture of solidarity with the voices of reason of Israelis and Palestinians seeking a non-violent route for a just peace`.

Neve Shalom / Wahat al-Salam village inhabits 220 people, 50 Jewish and Palestinian Arabs (holding Israeli citizenship) families. The residents adhere the c xistence of different faiths and races.

The show`s venue, at the foot of the village, was set up on a chickpea field. Organisers had to construct the performance grounds from scratch to allow some 50,000 people to attend.

Waters kicked off his three-hour-long show with `In The Flash`, from `The Wall` album.

Other pieces performed included `Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun`, `Wish You Were Here`, `Shine On You Crazy Diamond`, `Have A Cigar` and `Leaving Beirut`.

Images of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and George W. Bush were shown on a video screen on stage while Waters performed `The Fletcher Memorial Home`.

The second part of the show included the whole `Dark Side of the Moon`.

After playing `Another Brick in the Wall`, Waters addressed the cheering crowds, telling them: "We and the rest of the world need this generation of Israelis to tear down the walls".

Israel has built almost half the planned barrier, which has the stated aim of keeping suicide bombers out of its cities.

Condemned by Palestinians as a land grab, the barrier has been branded illegal by the World Court because it cuts through occupied territory. Israel is rerouting some sections after a Supreme Court order to lessen Palestinian hardship.

In 1990, Waters performed "The Wall" along the Berlin Wall that separated East and West Germany to celebrate reunification.

He told reporters that he hoped Israel`s barrier would also be brought down one day.

"It may be a lot harder to get this one down, but eventually it must happen," Waters said.

Статья про Трибьют концерт Тимоти уайту в 2002г.

By Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan, Globe Staff | June 27, 2006

Billboard editor Timothy White died four years ago today, and not long after a raft of rockers -- John Mellencamp, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Sting, Don Henley, Billy Joel, and Roger Waters -- came to Boston to play a benefit for White's widow, Judy Garlan White, and the couple's twin boys, who live on Beacon Hill. Well, one of those boys, Alexander, has written an essay about his old man for an eighth-grade English class at Brimmer and May School. To say it's touching would be an understatement. Alexander, who was 10 when his dad died, likens his father to Jimmy Stewart's character in ``It's a Wonderful Life." ``My father was, by many accounts, a moral compass and a guiding light for the industry he worked in," Alexander writes, referring to his dad's efforts on behalf of artists and against big, bad record companies. ``Like George Bailey, he fought for what he knew was right against enormous odds. . . . His strength and his legacy help make me the individual I am today."

Fan hopes website puts heat on Bruins
Jonathan Watts doesn't really think he'll change the ownership of one of Boston's oldest sports franchises, he just wants to build some support for the Boston Bruins. The 24-year-old from Quincy has launched his PleaseSelltheBruins.com website imploring Jeremy Jacobs, whose Delaware North owns the Bruins and the TD Banknorth Garden, to ``Give the city its team back." A driver for a catering company, Watts said yesterday: ``You figure that after 30 years, you'd give something back, but the Bruins have slipped so far in this city." Does he really believe that Jacobs will unload the storied hockey franchise? ``I'm not naive enough to think he's actually going to sell the team, but maybe we can bring about some change and maybe hit him where it hurts -- money," said Watts. ``Maybe some of the fair-weather fans will come around."

From Boston to Biddeford
Believe it or not, Tom Scholz is still a bitter man. Thirty years after ``More Than a Feeling" topped the charts, Boston's scrupulous songwriter remains unsatisfied. Just check out the new issue of Boston magazine. Scholz has nary a good word to say about his former bandmates Fran Sheehan and Sib Hashian, or about the music biz generally. But most telling -- and typical -- is Scholz's reaction to Sony's newly remastered versions of Boston's first two albums, ``Boston" and ``Don't Look Back." The meticulous MIT grad says they don't sound very good -- and even goes so far as to call them ``abortions." . . . Wandering around the Wal-Mart in Biddeford, Maine, over the weekend, Newburyport attorney Steven A. Berlin spotted a familiar face. ``I said, `Hey, I know that broad,' " Berlin told us yesterday. ``But she was so old, I thought maybe she was one of my schoolmarms." Nope. It was actually former first lady Barbara Bush. ``I was looking for a hairbrush, and there she was looking at hair-care products," said Berlin. Why Wal-Mart? Biddeford is not far from the Bush family compound on Walker's Point.

Damon the Yankee revisits Regis
Almost a year after talk show host Regis Philbin, a diehard Yankees fan, asked then-Red Sox player Johnny Damon whether he would cut his hair for a chance to play for George Steinbrenner's team, Damon returns tomorrow to visit ``Live With Regis and Kelly," his first appearance since joining the Yankees. Joining Damon on the show is ``Superman Returns" star and former Cohasset resident Kate Bosworth.

The Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Lottery recognized this year's recipients of the ``Heroes Among Us" award at the State House yesterday, including Adam Roberge, who has been blind since birth.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and his wife, Debby, led one of 31 teams that competed in the fourth annual AccesSportAmerica Mayor's Cup Regatta on Sunday. Despite threatening weather and soggy banks along the Charles River, more than 400 people were on hand to cheer the teams. The event raised more than $150,000 for AccesSportAmerica, which provides challenging sports programs for children and adults with disabilities. . . . Howie Day has been added to the Hot Stove/Cool Music show at Fenway. Wasn't so long ago that Day appeared in an East Boston courtroom to answer charges that he was drunk and disorderly on an American Airlines flight. (Instead of jail, the spiky-haired, 25-year-old singer from Maine was ordered to undergo counseling for alcohol abuse.) The line up for the July 12 show also includes Ayla Brown, Buffalo Tom, Kay Hanley, Juliana Hatfield, the Gentlemen, and Click Five.

Waters shines like a crazy diamond

Waters shines like a crazy diamond

Roger Waters, former leader and founder of legendary rock band Pink Floyd, made it into the annals of Israeli rock music history Thursday night and not just because of the controversial comments he'd made a day earlier as he inspected Israel's security fence in Bethlehem.

In a two and a half hour concert that packed more than 50,000 people into a makeshift stadium at the peace village Neveh Shalom, located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, near the Latrun monastery, Waters proved that forty years (and hours in backed up traffic) was really worth the wait for him to perform in Israel.

As in the build up to the performance, so on Thursday evening the themes were peace and politics with Waters singing some of Pink Floyd's greatest songs including the iconic "Another Brick in the Wall," and "Comfortably Numb" from the album The Wall, "Wish You Were Here," and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," the entire contents of Floyd's classic Dark Side of The Moon, and his own more up to date solo work.

Waters chatted very little with the crowd, who had waited patiently an extra half an hour for the concert to start due to heavy traffic jams. After Micha Shitreet, David Broza and Mashina finished entertaining the early arrivals, Waters finally took the stage.

He said a quick "Shalom," before launching into the riveting electric guitar chords of "In the Flesh," the symbolic song from The Wall that paints a picture of a rock star turned political dictator. Waters used the same Nazi-like symbols of two hammers crossed together that Pink Floyd had used in the 1982 film version of the album, starring Bob Geldof. And when he sang the line "And that one looks Jewish..." the crowd roared their approval, a responsive commentary from the enthusiastic crowd that became a common practice throughout the night.

Towards the end of the first half of the show, Waters shared a short story with the crowd about an experience he'd had as a teenager traveling around Lebanon.

"When I was a young man of 17 I visited the Middle East and became stranded in Beirut, Lebanon. I had to hitchhike to London and before I left Lebanon I was taken in by a Beduin family just outside of Beirut who treated me like one of their own," Waters told the easy-to-please crowd. "When the war started in Afghanistan, I took these events and made them into a story."

Then Waters launched into the song, bashing American and British global policies and asking the crowd: "Are these the people we should bomb?"

That was not Water's main political commentary of the evening. Returning to the stage close to midnight for his encore, Waters called to the crowd: "We need this generation of Israelis to tear down walls and make peace."

Then he played the song everyone had been waiting for: "Another Brick in the Wall." The political commentary was definitely less well received than Water's overall musical performance. Although there were cheers after his statement, some people called for him to focus on the music.

Despite a weak vocal showing at last summer's Live 8 performance in Hyde Park, London, where the singer united with his former band mates for the first time since their split in the mid-80s, this time Waters was on top form delivering some of the greatest rock tracks ever written, in the same top-notch quality as they might have been presented thirty-something years ago. And the backup singers and musicians were equally as impressive.

Ultimately, Waters proved that he does not really need his old Pink Floyd mates to create a concert experience that is unforgettable.
