Big names for new London festival
Hyde Park is proving a popular summer venue
The Who and Roger Waters are to headline a new festival in London's Hyde Park.

'Hyde Park Calling' takes place over the weekend of July 1 and 2, and will feature a number of acts across two stages on both days. So far, it's confirmed that Roger Waters will be supported by Texas, while Razorlight will play on the same day as The Who.

Waters, who memorably rejoined Pink Floyd onstage during Live8 at the same venue last summer, will be performing his old band's legendary 1973 album 'The Dark Side of the Moon' as part of his set. It will be his only British performance of the album in 2006.

Tickets are go onsale at 9am on Friday March 10.

The Who's Pete Townshend has branded Pete Doherty "the ultimate rock 'n' roll nihilist".

The guitarist and former hell raiser said Doherty and supermodel Kate Moss should get help if their problems spiral out of control.

"Peter Doherty is the ultimate rock 'n' roll nihilist," said Townshend, 60.

"It is important we acknowledge that this business loves to kill people. But I don't worry about him. Maybe it's not as bad as it looks.

"I don't know Pete but I know Kate quite well, and I think they know how to get help when they need it."

Townshend - who was cautioned in 2003 after looking at an internet child porn website which he claimed was for research purposes - was speaking at the launch of a new summer festival which The Who will headline.

Hyde Park Calling takes place in London over the weekend of July 1-2. The Who will headline the Sunday and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd will headline the Saturday. Texas and Razorlight are among the support acts.

Think it's not over until it's over? Well, it's over. Pink Floyd fans might have to stick with one of those "Dark Side of the Moon" laser light shows if they're hoping to catch another Floyd performance with original band members David Gilmour and Roger Waters after last summer's Live 8 concert.

Legendary Floyd guitarist Gilmour tells the May issue of Guitar World magazine (on stands March 14), "I have great pride and affection for most of my Pink Floyd career," Gilmour said. "But I have moved on. I don't have much nostalgia for that old thing."

The band have won a new audience of younger fans since playing at Live8 last summer.

Daltrey said: “There is a large audience of young people who have never seen The Who live. This will give them the chance. It will also give me the chance to play with the band I love, maybe for the last time.

“No one plays the music we created better than we do. I’m going to enjoy it.”

The band are also working on their first studio album since 1982.

Townshend has written 1,400 songs and has whittled them down to 30.

“I always told myself I wouldn’t tour again with the band unless we had a new album.

“I worried about getting bored on stage, that we had wrung as much out of our back catalogue as we could,” he said.

The guitarist admitted it has been hard to write songs for the band without the presence of bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon, who have both died.

He said: “I had to write material for a band that doesn’t exist – two key members are dead. It’s been quite difficult but it’s nearly done.”

Asked how bands like the Rolling Stones continue to produce so many albums, Townshend said: “I know how they produce albums, they just make them and don’t care what they’re like. Sometimes they’re great, sometimes they’re not.”

Palestinian artists have appealed to Roger Waters, to call off a concert in Tel Aviv in June because it could be seen as legitimising the towering wall Israel is building through Jerusalem. Groups such as the Palestinian Association for Contemporary Art and the League of Palestinian Artists have written to Waters expressing concern at his plans. Their letter said: "Palestinian as well as several international artists asked in shock: how can the artist whose name around the world was for many years associated with breaking walls of injustice be in any way complicit with the monstrosity of Israel's wall, declared illegal by the international court of justice?" Last year, Waters was among several British artists who supported a War On Want campaign against the West Bank barrier. At the time, Waters said: "The poverty inflicted by the wall has been devastating for Palestinians. It has kept children from their schools, the sick from proper medical care and continues to destroy the Palestinian economy." Yesterday, he said: "I have a lot of fans in Israel, many of whom are refuseniks. I would not rule out going to Israel because I disapprove of the foreign policy any more than I would refuse to play in the UK because I disapprove of Tony Blair's foreign policy."

This weekend sees the first round of the 2006 Formula One Grand Prix Championship. As part of the first race, being held in Bahrain, Nick Mason takes a break from Pink Floyd-related activity to participate in one of the support races at the event.

The race is a "Pro-Celebrity" event, and features an interesting line-up which includes the likes of Nick, Status Quo's Rick Parfitt, five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, Boris Becker, Lance Armstrong and Michael Johnson with professional drivers such as Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert and Williams' Narain Karthikeyan, taking the wheel of sixteen Chevrolet V8 SS Luminas.

With 380-horsepower, the cars won’t be too easy for some of the racing novices to handle, so each celebrity will be partnered by an accomplished race driver. There will be two races: one on the Saturday and one on Sunday before the Bahrain Grand Prix. Each ten-lap event will consist of 16 cars with the professional drivers driving the first five laps. They will then pit to hand over to their celebrity partners for the remainder of the race.

Commenting on the race Nick Mason said: "I could hardly believe the invitation when it arrived... see what promises to be one of the best GPs for some time, drive a seriously exciting race car in the shape of the 5 litre V8 Lumina, and escape the British winter! Not only that, but compete against one of my heroes in the shape of Sir Steve Redgrave. I may have some motor racing experience, but I suspect anyone who has quite so many gold medals is unlikely to head out onto one of the most sophisticated of all Grand Prix circuits for a gentle meander around!"

Palestinians urge Roger Waters to boycott Israel

Roger Waters, a founder member of the rock group Pink Floyd, is under pressure to cancel a planned concert in Tel Aviv in June as a protest against Israeli policy towards the Palestinians.

A group of Palestinian political activists, cultural organisations and their supporters have backed a letter to Mr Waters, who has expressed strong opposition to the 450-mile separation barrier being built by Israel. They urge him to remove the city from his summer tour this year.

The letter, which is supported, among others, by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, urges Waters not to perform in Israel "until the time comes when it ends its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory".

Waters showed no sign last night that he would bow to the pressure . He said: "I am happy to play to anybody who believes in peace. I don't discriminate between any of my fans, wherever they live. Being an Israeli does not disbar from being a human being."

The campaign to prevent Waters appearing in Israel follows several high-profile cultural skirmishes involving British public figures that began with last year's short-lived academic boycott and the recent announcement by a group of British architects that they were considering calling for a boycott of Israel.

The latter initiative has run into trouble after the leading British architect Richard Rogers, in whose offices the group's inaugural meeting took place, denied he had supported a boycott. There have been calls by American politicians for him to be dropped from a $1.7m (£1m) project to renovate a New York convention centre named after the late Jacob Javits, a Republican senator and strong supporter of Israel.

A number of British musicians have performed in Israel in recent years including, most recently, Phil Collins who held a concert in Tel Aviv last November without much controversy.

Omar Barghouti, of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, said yesterday: "We are appealing to Roger Waters because we feel that a principled and conscientious artist like him, who is on record opposing Israel's illegal wall, would be more accommodating to our perspective, to our moral argument." Mr Barghouti, a choreographer, said that supporters of the call would not be satisfied if Waters agreed to perform in a Palestinian location. He said: "We do not wish to become a fig leaf for anyone who does not mind becoming complicit in Israel's crimes ... Performing in Israel as if it were normal, as if it were not building a monstrous colonial wall ... is simply unacceptable."

Roger Waters, a founder member of the rock group Pink Floyd, is under pressure to cancel a planned concert in Tel Aviv in June as a protest against Israeli policy towards the Palestinians.

A group of Palestinian political activists, cultural organisations and their supporters have backed a letter to Mr Waters, who has expressed strong opposition to the 450-mile separation barrier being built by Israel. They urge him to remove the city from his summer tour this year.

The letter, which is supported, among others, by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, urges Waters not to perform in Israel "until the time comes when it ends its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory".

Waters showed no sign last night that he would bow to the pressure . He said: "I am happy to play to anybody who believes in peace. I don't discriminate between any of my fans, wherever they live. Being an Israeli does not disbar from being a human being."

The campaign to prevent Waters appearing in Israel follows several high-profile cultural skirmishes involving British public figures that began with last year's short-lived academic boycott and the recent announcement by a group of British architects that they were considering calling for a boycott of Israel.

The latter initiative has run into trouble after the leading British architect Richard Rogers, in whose offices the group's inaugural meeting took place, denied he had supported a boycott. There have been calls by American politicians for him to be dropped from a $1.7m (£1m) project to renovate a New York convention centre named after the late Jacob Javits, a Republican senator and strong supporter of Israel.
A number of British musicians have performed in Israel in recent years including, most recently, Phil Collins who held a concert in Tel Aviv last November without much controversy.

Omar Barghouti, of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, said yesterday: "We are appealing to Roger Waters because we feel that a principled and conscientious artist like him, who is on record opposing Israel's illegal wall, would be more accommodating to our perspective, to our moral argument." Mr Barghouti, a choreographer, said that supporters of the call would not be satisfied if Waters agreed to perform in a Palestinian location. He said: "We do not wish to become a fig leaf for anyone who does not mind becoming complicit in Israel's crimes ... Performing in Israel as if it were normal, as if it were not building a monstrous colonial wall ... is simply unacceptable."

Они будут рассказывать истории обизумительных концертах Pink Floyd, мултимедийных ещё до того, как было изобретено само слово, и о стене, которая строилась и разрушалась к средине концерта.

Они говорят об анимации, заметках и движении во времени, когда люди говорили, "это финансово не выгодно", когда люди любили музыку, нежели потребительскую сторону дела.

И это не только Floyd. Любой "обыкновенный" сольный альбом Уотерса - намного лучше, чем то, что вы ещё когда-либо услышите. Я люблю "Amused To Death" 1992г. за его язвительность масс-медиа и социальную критику, но "Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking" фантастичен. Никто не совершенен

Проблема с Уотерсом в том, что он знает насколько он велик. Возможно в этом и есть причина почему он пытался выпустить оперу в этом году [на самом деле опера уже была выпущена в прошлом 2005г. - прим. пер.], Са Иру, в качестве попытки дальнейшего сохранения его места в истории музыки.

Но он также хорошо знает, что ему это не нужно на самом деле - возьмите затруднительную [для прослушивания] ораторию Пола Маккартни. Но, Эй, Jude [тут возможно двусмысленно относится и к сограждан автора - прим. пер.], не всё же настолько плохо [имеются в виду слова из знаменитой песни Битлз - прим. пер.]. Уотерс, надо заметить, не простой человек. В последнем альбоме Pink Floyd The Final Cut, он ухитрился вставить имя Менахема Бегина [Menachem Begin], который только вторгся в Ливан, в число большого списка фашистов, которые, как он чувствовал, нарушали мировой порядок (включая и прошлого прмьер-министра Британии Маргарет Тэтчер и архитектора Фолклендской войны.)

Не так давно он был очень откровенен насчёт израильской оккупации Западного Побережья [Иордана].

Уотерс также не боиться наносить удар и по коллегам-музыкантам. Он назвал Мадонну "ужасной личностью, внушающей отвращение и патетичной, которая достигла успеха, деградируясь дешёвыми трюками" [!] (Не ожидайте, что Эстер [Esther] пойдёт на его концерт в Тель Авиве).

Лучше, чем Гилмор

Как старый поклонник, я хорошо знаком со спором "кто лучше, Уотерс или (гитарист Дэйв) Гилмор". Некоторые люди также добавляют солиста Сида Барретта, первый автор группы, который в дальнейшем сошёл с ума. По моему мнению, здесь нет соревнования.

Несмотря на легендарные гитарные завывания Гилмора, и несмотря на его (тогда ещё) кристально чистый голос, который превосходит надтреснутые выкрики Уотерса, басист (Уотерс) имеет две вещи "за" в его сторону: Большая часть слов [с 1968г. - большая часть, кроме тех песен, к авторству которых он не имеет отношения, с 1973г. - все стихи авторства Уотерса - прим. пер.], и абсолютное большинство песен самого успешного периода группы.

Это правда. что Гилмор и Уотерс вместе намного лучше, как мы видели в летнем выступлении в "Live 8" (очевидно единственный случай подобного рода), но ведь Уотерс может существовать и один, и не так уж и плохо.

В одном из своих лучших альбомах, Amused To Death, он пересекается с теорией масс-медиа Нила Постмана [Neil Postman, автор книги 'Amusing Ourselves To Death', которая натолкнула Роджера на сочинение альбома Amused To Death - прим. пер.], с чем-то, что выглядит более и более определённым в наши дни, Уотерс говорит о делегации с другой планеты, которая прибыла на Землю проверить аборигенов, т.е. нас.

И они поняли, что они опоздали, и они находят человечество мёртвым в своих удобных креслах, с мёртвыми глазами, сфиксированными на телеэкран. "Этот вид развлёк себя до смерти", пишут они. Альбом вышел в 1992г. Сегодня это не пророчество. Это реальность.

Поэтому доставьте себе удовольствие. Уотерс выступит 22 Июня в Тель Авиве. Выступление будет включать в себя, среди прочего, полное исполнение "Dark Side Of the Moon".

Будите детей, скажите им, что все ринг-тон музыканты, звёзды риалити-шоу, все послы, скажите им, что все они уже мертвы.

Скажите 'им - рок-н-ролл сжёг себя дотла, и прошлое - что бы ты не делал - это будущее. Затем, возьмите их с собой в парк, и они обязательно поймут.
