DANCED MYSELF RIGHT ON TO THE STAGE:
Born to Boogie: the DVD and CD
[8 April 2005]
by Dan Nishimoto

18 March 1972. Wembley Stadium. One band. Betty Wright's "Clean-Up Woman" blares over the speakers. One man answers the call. 10,000 screaming fans respond.

And over 30 years later, you can take it home with you.

As the laughter swells at this statement, the following must be conceded: the recorded rock concert has become familiar to the point of passé. A live DVD usually means an added profit margin for a marginal artist and at best a sub-par performance. Rare are the musicians that breathe the true definition of an Italian spettacolo, let alone document something so extraordinary. So, leave it to an artist who passed away nearly 30 years ago to show the kids what it means to Rock.

Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex were arguably the first rock phenomena post-Beatles. In 1972, Marc was riding high off the success of three chart-topping singles, and his smash album Electric Warrior. However, for a musician who could sell 100,000 records per day, he had limited performance options in his native UK, being confined to two- to three-thousand seat venues. In November 1971, Led Zeppelin successfully used the 10,000-seat Wembley Stadium, paving the way for Marc to take it to the bigger stage. T.Rex played two shows that night in March, both of which were filmed under the supervision of one Ringo Starr; as if the event itself were not special enough, it was also the only time Marc permitted a live recording. The concert footage from the second performance was edited, and bolstered with musical and "life" vignettes featuring cameos from Ringo himself, Elton John, and Geoffrey Bayldon. The result was a lean feature-length film, Born to Boogie.

The movie captured Marc Bolan at the height of his popularity, and the essence of Rock Mania. The concerts were unreal -- Marc was nearly torn to pieces by fans as he ran to his escape vehicle after the show -- and Boogie provided a view from the inside. The miscellaneous "bits" were just as priceless: through Ringo's connection, Marc recorded an acoustic set with a string accompaniment at John Lennon's mansion in Ascot ... set against a surreal backdrop à la the Mad Hatter's Tea Party; Elton John and Ringo joined T.Rex at the Beatles' Apple Studios to record Rex originals and rock 'n' roll classics; and Marc simply had fun, cos life was a gassss ... However, just as Marc's star met an untimely demise, the film faded from public view. Fans kept Boogie alive with periodic screenings, and a VHS version was released in the '90s, but with limited circulation and a decreasing pool of people in the know, the film seemed destined for a cult point of conversation. Along with a purported 50 hours of additional footage locked away, this monumental document begged not just a proper reissue, but a much needed reintroduction. Finally, Boogie has made its way out.

The continuing resonance of Marc on rockers ranging from Bowie to Moby and the popularity of the DVD format finally made a proper reissue plausible. While the cleaned-up sound and video of the original Boogie alone makes the package worth the price of admission -- Tony Visconti, Marc's long-time friend and producer (in addition to working with Bowie and Thin Lizzy), remastered the original audio and encoded it in DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1 Surround Sound -- the bonus material is a fan's dream. The entire original concert used in Boogie has been restored in its entirety and in its original order. Additionally, the matinee concert, which has not been seen since that night, is featured here completely. Other extras that span the DVD's two discs include: a documentary presented by Marc's son, Rolan Bolan, and featuring interviews with the sole surviving member of T.Rex, drummer Bill Legend; original Boogie producer Tim Van Rellim; photographer Keith Morris; Wembley show MC and radio personality Emperor Rosko; Bayldon; Visconti; and many others; another documentary on the restoration process; multi-cam and multi-audio options; Cine-8 footage shot by Marc himself; and more. The double-CD soundtrack also features an interview with Marc from late 1971, not included in the DVD. To discuss everything from the fine details of Boogie to the beauty of Bolan, PopMatters spoke via e-mail with Visconti, reissue director Mark Allen, and reissue producer Mark Roberts; and via phone with Rolan Bolan.

Background to Boogie

PopMatters: Please describe your role in the reissue effort: when you first joined the effort, your role in the effort.

Rolan Bolan: I just wanted it to happen, because I'm a big believer in DVDs ... I tried to shop it for about two years just to get anyone to believe in it, and finally Sanctuary went for it. I wasn't really gonna be that involved, but Ringo said if Rolan's not involved, then it's not gonna happen ... This is the first time the family has been involved…

Mark Roberts: I'm the Producer on the Born to Boogie DVD. I became involved in mid-2003 when Brian Dunham, from Wizard [co-rights owner of the film with Apple Films], first approached Sanctuary to see if we'd be interested in bringing Ringo's epic film out on DVD. At that point, in addition to some finished prints, Brian had 272 rusting film cans that we thought contained the only remaining film elements from the making of the movie. At the start, all I had seen was a poor quality copy of the film on VHS. What struck me straight away was the quality of Marc's performance -- and the terrific energy he possessed. A few months later, on a frosty December morning in London, I met Brian at a post-production facility in west London to see some of the footage from those rusting cans. The film was playing on a Steinbeck with muffled, out-of-synch sound, and very grainy black and white images. But up on screen were the unmistakable figures of Marc and Ringo larking around backstage at Wembley. This was never-before-seen footage ... and another 300 additional reels of film.

Mark Allen: I was the director ... I filmed interviews and wrote and edited the documentaries and extras. I also, along with the editor, created the style of the concerts and oversaw the process of re-mastering the original film. My background is entertainment documentaries for TV ... I wanted to make it a real feast of entertainment -- and I wanted to have a narrative -- so the concerts I wanted to be a journey -- as if you were going. You arrive on the bus, you get through the ticket barriers, you find your seat -- then we're backstage with the band while Rosko whips the crowds into a frenzy -- then you enjoy the whole concert -- all of it as it happened. To enhance this I chose to use multiple split screens so you can see as much of the action as possible. I chose to bring in Rolan to be our guide ... After all, this is Rolan's life.

Tony Visconti: I received an e-mail last autumn from the DVD producer Mark Roberts asking if I would like to be involved ... This led to a conference call with Mark Roberts and Mark Allen ... discussing how we would proceed and what I was bringing to the table. Soon I was on a plane to London where I met the two Marks and spent a day doing various video shoots for the inclusion of the bonus DVD. I was video'd mixing very early tracks and then I was greeted and interviewed by Rolan Bolan…

PM: What was the prime impetus to seek the additional film footage and reissue this film?

MR: We always wanted to do more than just release the film on DVD. At the start of the project we thought we might have enough material to restore the Evening Concert to its full length and maybe most of the Matinee performance. The first batch of film turned out to be black and white 'work print' -- it wasn't until months later that we finally discovered most of the original [color] negative. We finished with hours and hours of material.

TV: I wasn't satisfied with the sound quality of the second-generation sound that was available ... the quality was very poor and a surround sound mix was unthinkable if this was all they could come up with. Back in the '70s I mixed the film's music from the original 16-track analog masters and in 2004 they were missing. We all put our heads together and started a massive detective search for the missing tapes. They were found in a storage facility beneath Tottenham Court Road in London only a week before I was schedule to mix. After the 16-track masters were transferred to high definition digital medium, the re-mixing was a breeze and the excellent quality was downright scary good.

MA: Born to Boogie was to be just the beginning of a truly landmark production of Marc Bolan and T.Rex as audio and visual artists. The great thing about this production is that we wanted it to be a story and have a heart.

PM: Born to Boogie is as much a product of Marc as it is other major personalities of the time: Ringo, Elton John, Lennon. Who else was consulted for this reissue project and how were they consulted? PM: Born to Boogie is as much a product of Marc as it is other major personalities of the time: Ringo, Elton John, Lennon. Who else was consulted for this reissue project and how were they consulted?

MR: Ringo has been a force behind this DVD. Without his blessing, none of this would have been possible.

MA: Ringo's instructions were simple -- you can use my footage -- just don't mess with my film! We have kept him in touch with everything and of course we credit him as the original director -- it is his material and his work.

MR: Tony Visconti has been an inspiration, as you can hear on the DVD. Tony was involved in this project in 1972 and again over 30 years later to mix the sound. Bill Legend, the only surviving member from the T.Rex '72 band line-up, also lent his support and shared with us his experiences of being in the band. We made a decision very early on to keep the project in 1972 -- with T.Rex at the very height of their success.

PM: How did it feel to work with this film, over 30 years later?

TV: It was eerie. I don't want to sound like I'm a new age geek, but it felt like Marc was with us the whole time we were remixing. I also found my fingers twitching in the same places of the songs where I was meant to adjust the volume of a track, just the same as I did 30 years earlier.

MA: The amazing thing was that the original film was put into cans and has not been touched since that time -- so we were opening the cans for the first time. The quality of the footage -- once we had repaired it -- was so good it meant we could see detail that was hidden in the original film -- textures of clothes -- true [colors] of things like Marc's amplifiers. We also found lots of editors notes scribbled on the ends of the film -- you can see these in the background on the menus and in some of the artwork on the packaging.

RB: My dad died when I was very young, so I obviously learned a lot from everyone. He was a beautiful person.

Boogie Production

PM: Please describe your impressions of Marc at this time. How did you feel at this time?

TV: Marc could do no wrong during this period. He was exposed by the music press as being a great exaggerator, but they loved him because he was a great interview and he helped sell lots of papers. You couldn't pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing his face everyday. Hit songs were pouring out of him. Just two years earlier we would have to pool our pocket money together to buy lunch for the Tyrannosaurus Rex sessions, but now we were riding in limos and drinking Cognac in the back. I felt really good about having hits with Marc since I was an important member of the team. Offers of very serious work were coming in and I felt like I was on top of the world. I was around 28 at the time.

PM: Because the concert was to become a feature film, I imagine you all planned a great deal prior.

TV: Ringo planned the camera shoot, five cameras including himself on one of them. I booked a mobile recording studio and planned the microphone setup and all the recording logistics. The film was shot without a script, however, borrowing heavily on both Fellini and Richard Lester's way of shooting the Beatles' films. Even the Mad Hatters tea party scene was all ad-libbed. To be honest there wasn't much planning.

PM: Please describe how you approached recording the concerts.

TV: Even though there is careful planning, you share microphones with the front of house mixer. In the first show there was a buzz on the bass guitar rig, so Marc's road crew pulled my cables out and we missed the bass for the first two songs. Luckily that first show was a rehearsal. After the road crew was properly chastised we had no problems with the second show, the one used mostly in the film. Visually we couldn't have separate mics for the front of the house and recording, so we attached two cables to each one mic and split the signals, one to the live mixer and one to my truck. This is a complicated set up and it must be done right. As I said, it wasn't completely right until the second show. Also, we had to watch the tape machines and have a second machine ready to start when the first was running out of tape. That is scary and a little nerve wracking.

PM: In retrospect, was there anything about how the concert was recorded that you would do different?

TV: Well, the front of the house mixer got a little too enthusiastic with the house sound towards the end of the set. It was so loud it was feeding back and we had to do incredible trickery to get rid of as much feedback as possible. That was extremely hard to do 30 years ago but much easier now with computer technology.

PM: Who is DJ Emperor Rosko? Why was he chosen to MC the concert? What did he bring to the concert?

TV: He was an American DJ who made a reputation on the early British pirate radio stations that used to broadcast outside the three-mile limit from a ship in the North Sea. When radio became less centralized in the UK, all the pirate DJs came to the mainland and got jobs in commercial radio in the early 70s and became big stars. Rosko was one of them. I don't really know why Marc chose him as the MC, there were others he was closer to, John Peel, for instance.

PM: Marc frequently played songs he recorded electric as acoustic numbers, and vice versa. Did you assist him with rearranging songs?

TV: We would have preproduction sessions, usually at my apartment in those days. Marc would play his songs to me and we would discuss how we would record them. We let the band play freely, sticking to a basic arrangement. Afterwards I would listen carefully to what they played, especially Marc's solo guitar, and embellish the band with a string orchestra. That was one of our big trademarks.

PM: What were your general impressions of the concert and the overall atmosphere?

MR: Unfortunately I wasn't there -- although watching experiencing Tony's new 5.1 mix, I feel as though I was ... Keep a listen out for the tambourines playing behind you in the crowd -- these are the ones Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn throw out before the final two songs.

PM: Have you spoken with any fan that attended the concerts at Wembley? What have their responses been like to that concert?

MA: Yes, we spoke and filmed several of them; they appear in the main documentary on the second disc. They have never forgotten it -- they remember everything -- the smell of the place -- the fact it was very hot in the auditorium. They were -- as we were when we first heard it -- amazed by the sheer 'rock and roll' experience of Marc playing live.

TV: You can see that they were crazed in the film. Ringo said he never saw a crowd that crazed as a Beatle in his audiences. Marc was nearly ripped to pieces trying to get from the backstage door to his getaway vehicle after the concert.

PM: How did you feel the day after the concerts?

TV: Bruised and very tired. It was totally exhausting.

PM: What was the premiere of Born to Boogie in Soho like?

TV: It was a lot of fun. It was my first premiere and I took my wife, Mary Hopkin. The fans were lining the streets and we were all smiling ear to ear.

PM: For the performances on the Lennon estate, where did this idea come from? Did you write arrangements specific to the performance?

TV: It was Ringo's idea to use that setting and he got permission from John. It was decided about two days before to do it. The set was chaotic and the actor Geoffrey Bayldon was complaining that he had no lines and rarely improvised. The weather was looking bad and it rained for a little. Marc and I worked out his acoustic set very carefully and I wrote elaborate string quartet parts for it. But Marc forgot the arrangement amidst all the chaos and just came up with what you hear in the film off the cuff. That's why the string players had to mime. I had to rewrite those parts later and they overdubbed them to Marc's improvisation. The string parts have a few raindrops on the india ink because of the bad weather.

PM: What is your favorite moment from the original feature film? PM: What is your favorite moment from the original feature film?

RB: I actually didn't see the film until 1997, but it was just amazing to watch him play and perform. It was amazing to see just how much energy they had for a four-piece band ... But I loved the part where he throws the tambourines in the crowd. He's just letting the crowd play with him; it's a group effort.

TV: I also loved the Mad Hatter's tea party scene. It was conceived around using the actor Geoffery Bayldon as the butler. Marc and I adored him playing the part of a befuddled wizard in a children's TV show called Catweazel. He didn't disappoint us when we met him. He was a consummate professional and a perfect gentleman.

PM: What is your favorite moment in the additional footage?

TV: I loved when Marc was singing his acoustic numbers and his mic continued to droop. Not a single member of his road crew ran out to tighten the stand. Marc was continuously nudging up the mic with his nose while he sang. This happened in the first show and is a bonus take.

MR: I love the multi-audio track, "Jeepster", on Disc 2; you can switch between several of the microphones on stage, including Marc's microphone. To me this is very significant because it proves almost everything you hear across the two discs is exactly as the band performed it, live -- no backing track, no overdubbing. It's just T.Rex delivering a massive rock 'n' roll sound exactly the same as the crowd heard them play on 18th March 1972. Fantastic!

MA: The 8mm footage shot by Marc himself -- it was shot on the road around the time of the concerts -- I think Ringo asked Marc to shoot it for the credit sequence. We have pieced it all back together and cut it to the song "Born to Boogie" -- a very underrated song -- I love it -- and it makes me cry -- very moving.

Boogie Down

PM: Marc predated the glam movement, and he has been name-checked by major figures in punk and new wave. Please explain why you feel Marc has been such a universal icon.

TV: He was chock full of talent and charisma. He had a good sense of the times he lived in and knew just what to do, sing and say. He knew he was gorgeous and charming and he worked it! Most pop stars seemed very subdued by comparison. It's as if Marc is one of the few who actually woke up and smelled the coffee.

PM: What is the significance of this reissue to music fans in the UK and around the world?

MA: It reminds those who were there, and the millions who weren't, that T.Rex were a rock band -- not glam -- but T.Rex Rock...

RB: [I hope people will learn about] how good of a guitar player and how much of a performer he was. You don't need special effects and lights. Blues is the blues, rock 'n' roll is rock 'n' roll. And it wasn't glam rock. It was fuckin' rock 'n' roll.

MR: The DVD shows Ringo's epic surrealist film at it's best ... This film is a piece of rock 'n' roll history for Beatles fans and for T.Rex fans around the world.

PM: Many younger music enthusiasts (especially in the US) do not know a great deal about T.Rex and the extent of his popularity. Please describe what was so unique about Marc's popularity. How did this translate into or influence his live show?

MA: Historically it was the first time we had seen mass fan worship since the Beatles. More importantly he changed the music world forever. He single-handedly wrote the obituary of the hippy. He was on the hippy circuit but then he changed and went electric.

TV: Marc was androgynous. Boys and girls loved him. He was petite and at times very macho. His music reflected what he was, both very sensitive and very ballsy ... His charisma was overwhelming at times, and he couldn't turn it off in the studio either. He'd perform to us as if we were an audience of 1000.

RB: When you can play in front of 8,000 people on acoustic guitar and still keep the crowd screaming ... wow. I think his songwriting is beautiful.

MA: Today, when you speak to many contemporary artists, they cite Marc Bolan as one of their greatest influences. These include the likes of Oasis, Morrissey, Scissor Sisters, Franz Ferdinand, the Black Eyed Peas, and the Libertines, to name but a few.

PM: What role does Born to Boogie play for the youth of today?

MA: Marc cared about his fans -- he had a lot of young fans at the time -- he respected them and dealt with them as equals ... Don't forget he was very young himself -- about 24 years old in this film -- and of course he died before he made 30.

PM: Any closing thoughts on Born to Boogie, or Marc?

TV: It's a much better film than I remembered. It has heart. Our work together always had heart, very brave heart. Marc was a great artist in both his work and himself. He was his own creation.

MR: I think Born To Boogie will be a testament to a rock 'n' roll legend who, like Elvis and Jim Morrison, will continue to stand the test of time ... Born To Boogie is going to be as important as Led Zeppelin DVD.

RB: A woman came up to me in London -- it was probably right when I was born -- she comes from a mixed-race family ... and my dad just kinda looked at her and smiled ... He saw the future of the world in the sense that it's about love, and it's not about color ... He was original, and he believed in himself, and he achieved his goals ... I think he's happy right now, I feel him everyday ... I just want [the DVD] to grow and grow, and I want it to be looked at as a musical piece, but also as a historical piece of filmmaking ... I want people that don't even know about T.Rex to have a reason to check it out.

The double-DVD and double-CD Born to Boogie packages are slated for simultaneous release. The UK release date is 16 May 2005; the North American release date is 7 June 2005. Audio on the DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1; dts 96/24. The picture is in 16:9 Anamorphic, Full Color; it will be available in PAL and NTSC (Region Code 1, 2, and 4). Total running time is roughly 5 hours 25 minutes. DVD list price is Ј13.61 and CD list price is Ј8.25.

Marc Bolan and T Rex - Born To Boogie
Friday May 20, 2005
The Guardian

As this fantastic Ringo Starr-directed concert film from 1972 makes abundantly clear, Marc Bolan's main achievement was to demonstrate that you could actually make pubescent girls wee their pants with excitement by writing brilliant songs, playing loud, raucous electric guitar, looking great, and having a superb band.

In a live setting, stripped of producer Tony Visconti's distinctive textured ambience, songs like Get it On are transformed into tribal rock freak-outs.

The supposedly Fellini-inspired linking segments with Ringo in them are embarrassingly bad, but there are several blazing songs recorded in the basement of the Beatles' London offices, featuring both Starr and Elton John. Extras include a Bolan documentary presented by his son Rolan, and the two full concerts from which the film was assembled.

И молодняк восторженно запищал, сходным образом выражая свои любовь и восторг: make pubescent girls wee their pants with excitement - писают восторгом вперемешку с волнением и возбуждением.

Bolan 'Boogies' on

Lots of pop performers find themselves cast as the biggest thing since the Beatles.
But how often does an actual Beatle make that windy pronouncement?

In 1972, Ringo Starr stamped that very imprimatur on Marc Bolan and his band, T-Rex. "The papers had been saying Marc was bigger than the Beatles," explains Bolan's producer, Tony Visconti. "Ringo bought it."

So the drummer-turned-auteur filmed the group for his feature-length movie "Born to Boogie," released in 1972. Decades after the movie went missing — and 28 years after Bolan's death — the footage has been found, buffed up and readied for release.

A DVD and a double-CD soundtrack will hit stores today. And on Thursday, "Born to Boogie" will be screened for the first time in the U.S. since the '70s, at the Landmark Sunshine Theater.

"Boogie" offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of glam-rock in its strutting prime. With Botticellian features, corkscrew hair and silvery clothes, Bolan cut the ultimate androgynous figure. His music, on the other hand, offered a studly slam of '50s-influenced rock. Compactly erotic hits like "Bang a Gong" and "Jeepster" made Bolan a cult figure in the U.S. but a megastar in his native U.K.

The DVD captures two concerts, both of which took place on March 18, 1972. The first, an evening event, was the centerpiece of the original film. The second, from the afternoon, is being released for the first time on the DVD. Strewn between the concert footage is a script, which Visconti says "had been scribbled on the back of a paper bag." It sounds like it. You'll hear lots of non sequitor hippie outbursts from Ringo and Bolan, like "Sometimes he used the sun as a tambourine" and "He couldn't score me any love."

"Surreal was a buzzword at the time," Visconti says. "It stood for baloney."

But the performance was as rich as foie gras. Some footage features Bolan playing with Elton John. "Everyone wanted to hitch to Marc's star," Visconti says.

By the late '70s, interest in Bolan waned and the film was lost. There was legal wrangling, too. Bolan's son, Rolan, had been ruled an illegitimate child by the British courts, and Ringo wouldn't let the film be released unless Rolan, now 29, benefited financially.

Even after things were worked out, it took two years to find the footage in a bunker beneath London. The restoration job took another six months.

"It looks more vivid now than it did originally," says Visconti, who oversaw the audio reproduction.

In 1977, Bolan died in an auto accident. The car was driven by Gloria Jones, Rolan's mother and writer of the hit "Tainted Love." Today, Jones lives in Los Angeles. So does Rolan, who'll serve as host for the West Coast premiere of a movie that shows his dad kicking off one of rock's most animated eras

Marc Bolan started work on his new songs after leaving the group Johns Children and also taking a couple that he'd recorded with them as well and started to create something \221big' in his plans for the future. As big as a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Some songs were worked through at home on his own and some with Steve Peregrine Took who would be the percussionist. Tyrannosaurus rex released four albums, three with Took and one with Mickey Finn who would later enjoy teen adulation with marc in T.Rex. What we have here are home demos and work in progress and live shows all of which are ultra rare as it was considered a few years ago the some of this material simply did not exist.
This box contains totally unheard material from Marcs own tapes (recently re uited with the family), incredible snippets of work in progress, unused version \ of songs that differ from the final released track.

The booklet included in the box contains extensive liner notes and rare memora ilia from the Tyrannosaurus Rex fan club. The box also contains a miniature co y of a Tyrannosaurus Rex concert programme from the Queens Hall in London 1969.

Disc One includes the final broadcast of John Peels Perfumed Garden show from late sixties Pirate radio which is completely unreleased.

Disc Two Contains totally unheard material from Marcs own tapes (recently re un ited with the family), incredible snippets of work in progress, unused version of songs that differ from the final released track, Sleepy Maurice was issued a s a fan club 7\224 and along with Chateau in Virginia Waters, Child Star, High\ ays and a version of Demon Queen appear on the boxed set \22320th Century Superstar\224 the rest of the material is unheard,

Disc Three contains two London shows the lyceum enjoyed a limited released in t he nineties however the queens hall show is totally unreleased.

Disc Four featuring marc and Steve live in New York is unreleased.

Disc Five includes the two tracks from the 7\224 single by Marc's next short li ved project Dib Cochran & the Earwigs featuring Rick Wakeman and unreleased ja m from those sessions , an unreleased live version of Pavilions of Sun from Holland and a totally unheard version of Oh baby demoed whilst still TyrannosaurusRex.

- JAhn's Children? Мда, сильно. И как они умудрились букву поменять? Ведь наверняка пересняли откуда-нибудь. Много в природе удивительного происходит...

Пусть тогда выпустят альбом с надписью RingA Starr.

2Primal Scream:
