Portuguese capital to rock to the sound of major music stars


LISBON: (AFP) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney will kick off a major six-day music festival in Lisbon on Friday which will feature more than 70 acts, including pop princess Britney Spears, British singer Sting and hard rock band Metallica

Billed as one of the biggest music festivals in the world, "Rock in Rio-Lisbon" will feature over 120 hours of music performed on three stages over two weekends, May 28-30 and again June 4-6.


Other acts scheduled to perform at the event, which is modelled on the original "Rock in Rio" festival which began in 1985 in the Brazilian coastal city it is named after, include Peter Gabriel and Alejandro Sanz.


Organisers expect two billion people in over 40 countries will view the festival, which is being held outside of Brazil for the first time in its history, on television.


Another 350,000 people are expected to attend the festival in the Portuguese capital.


Tickets for each day of the festival cost 53 euros (64 dollars) and so far some 190,000 have been sold out of a total of 600,000 which are available.


To host the event, organisers have built a 200,000-square-metre (2.2 million square foot) "City of Rock" in a Lisbon park which features a "mini-hospital", various bars and restaurants, a shopping centre and an area for "extreme" sports such as skateboarding and rock-climbing.


The entire grounds will be powered by 30 generators which will produce enough electricity to light up 50,000 homes.


"People do not come to 'Rock in Rio' just for the music, they come for the party," said the Brazilian promotor and organiser of the event, Roberto Medina, on a recent press tour of the grounds.


To date Medina, 56, has staged three "Rock in Rio" festivals which have pulled in crowds of up to 1.3 million people.


As in the previous versions of the festival, held in 1985, 1991 and 2001, the Lisbon edition will seek to raise awareness of social problems and collect money for charities.


The event, whose slogan is "For a Better World", will feature a lecture theatre where concert goers can watch documentaries discuss world peace in between musical acts.


United Nations (news - web sites) Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) is expected to send a video message to be played at the beginning of the festival while all three main Portuguese television networks have agreed to go silent for three minutes on Saturday to promote reflection on social issues as part of the festival.


Festival organisers say they will donate between two and five percent of ticket sales to charities that support needy children.


With the memory of the deadly March 11 train bombings in neighbouring Spain fresh in organiser's minds, security is expected to be tight at the event.


Some 400 private guards will patrol the grounds of the festival while another 600 police officers will guard the outside of the "City of Rock".


Concert goers will have to go through three security checks, including metal detectors, before they are allowed into the festival grounds.





"This is the biggest security mechanism ever put in place for a musical event, but we will be as discreet about it as possible," said the director of festival security, Alvaro Ramos.

LONDON - The BBC is ramping up its digital coverage of the Glastonbury Festival this year with additional interactive TV, online and mobile services.

This year, the festival will be interactive each night from 10pm. Viewers with digital television will be able to press the red button on their remotes to get further Glastonbury broadcasts from BBC Three and BBC Two. Live coverage from the New Tent, which will house up-and-coming acts, and the Radio 1 dance stage will be available to viewers.

The interactive service also allows viewers to get unbroken mainstream coverage from 10pm, while BBC Three plans to dip out of the festival for core programmes such as 'EastEnders'.

The BBC's Glastonbury website will comprise a collection of "satellite" sites from around the BBC carrying line-up information and schedules as well as profiles and pictures of major performers and a message board. A special Radio Player will enable users to hear related news programmes online up to a week after they have been broadcast.

The corporation has confirmed that it will use MMS for the first time. Producers and presenters will be able to take and send pictures on a mobile phone and then send them direct to the BBC website. The BBC claims that a picture can be online within a couple of minutes. This is to be backed up with Wap and a PDA service aimed at the home rather than festival audience. This will be based on existing BBC.co.uk content.

In March this year, the BBC's director of new media Ashley Highfield said that the festival would also be available in broadband for the first time.

The sold-out festival released a small number of further tickets on Tuesday via the ticket outlet Way Ahead. They sold out within hours.

Tickets for the event first went on sale at 8pm on April 1, but many who attempted to get online to buy tickets were left frustrated when they were unable to log on. Fans who tried to get through on telephone lines were also frustrated because the lines were almost constantly engaged.

This year Oasis, Sir Paul McCartney and Muse have all been confirmed acts, with rumours of Morrissey, PJ Harvey, James Brown, Kings of Leon, Basement Jaxx, Elbow, The Chemical Brothers, Ms Dynamite, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture and The Libertines also appearing.

The official line-up will be announced next month ahead of the event, which takes place between June 25 and 27 at Worthy Farm, Somerset.

The first day of Rock in Rio-Lisboa

Sir Paul McCartney offered to his fans 3 hours of performance and it seems he want to return to Portugal.

The first day of Rock in Rio-Lisboa is already ended and it went down on history twice. And why? Because the world’s biggest music event is being held outside Brazil for the first time in its history and because this was also the first time that Paul McCartney performed alive in Portugal.

It is impossible not to be overwhelmed by this space: this was the most common expression from the public who went for a walk in the Bela Vista Park while waiting for the most wanted moment of the night that was the performance of Paul McCartney. The waiting was worth it. The ex-Beatle performed for almost 3 hours and created an empathy with the public since the first music.

The effort of Paul McCartney to speak Portuguese was something very special in this show, because he made the public blood boil each time he said “obrigado” (“thank you”, in Portuguese). But in all this interaction developed all along the show, the peak was when Paul McCartney returned to the stage with a Portuguese flag wishing good luck to the Portuguese team in Euro 2004.

Sir Paul dedicated to the Portuguese public the song “Yesterday”, written some years ago in Portugal. Certainly he kept very good memories from the time he was here in Portugal.

Besides that, he British singer never had the opportunity to come do Portugal to perform alive to his thousands of fans. May 28th will be recorded in the history of music in Portugal as the day he finally came. This was the first day of Rock in Rio-Lisboa, the world’s biggest party.

The ex-beatle Paul McCartney boycotted the Rock in Rio Festival logo at the show in Lisbon, Portugal on Friday.

McCartney demanded that the Rock in Rio organization's logo and logos of festival sponsors be covered during his concert. For the show, the logos were covered in a black cloth.

McCartney only wanted to be associated with the show, not the sponsors or the festival's logo.

The setlist was the same as the Gijon concert and the show started around 9:30pm. Paul wore the same stage outfit that he wore in Gijon including the 'red' shoes! His was in perfect voice for the most part with just his voice cracking slightly during "Blackbird."

The fans were very enthusiastic, clapping, dancing and singing along to most of the songs.

McCartney demanded that the Rock in Rio organization's logo and logos of festival sponsors be covered during his performance because he only wanted to be associated with the show and not it's advertisers. For the show, the logos were covered over in a black cloth.

When the preshow finished Paul emerged with his fist held high in the air to the thunderous applause of 50,000 fans at the Festival. He spoke in Portuguese many times during the concert and introduced all the band members in Portuguese. The band referred to him as "Paulo" which is Portuguese for Paul.

After "Got to Get You Into My Life" Paul welcomed the crowd in Portuguese, "Olá Lisboa, viva Portugal, estão todos fixes?" (Hello Lisbon, long live Portugal, are you feeling good?)

"You Won't See Me" was a crowd favorite with people singing the "ooo-la-la's" during the chorus.

At the beginning of the acoustic set the band left the stage and Paul played "In Spite of All Danger." Paul introduced "In Spite Of All The Danger" as a song composed in the times of the Quarrymen, before the Beatles and one of the first songs he, John and George recorded together.

For "Blackbird," he told the audience afterwards that his guitar (Epiphone Texan) was the one he played on the Ed Sullivan show (1965).

He dedicated "Here Today" to John and in Portuguese. "Escrevi esta canção depois que meu amigo John faleceu" (I wrote this song after my friend John passed away.) For "All Things Must Pass" he said, "a meu amigo George." (for my friend George) When Paul finished "All Things Must Pass," fans screamed "What about Ringo?" and Paul did the "Yellow Submarine" a capella singalong version he did in Spain.

After the "Yellow Submarine" Paul said, "Estão a divertir-se? Eu também!" (Are you having fun? Me too!). The crowd roared.

Paul did "I'll Follow the Sun" first with a reprise ending saying that the song was too short. After "For No One," Paul did the song again, but only the reprise.

Paul made a mention after "Lady Madonna"in reference to the upcoming Soccer Cup. He said, "É optimo estar em Portugal o país do Euro 2004!" (I am happy to be in Portugal, the Euro 2004 country.) That brought enthusiastic cheers from the audience because Portugal is the host of the Soccer European Cup that begins in June.

"Hey Jude" had the usual singalong and before Paul left the stage for the encore he said, "Têm sido um público maravilhoso." (You have been a marvelous audience.)

When he began "Yesterday" Paul told the crowd that "Yesterday" was actually written in Portugal during a 1965 trip from Lisbon to Algarve. He said that he will always be grateful to Portugal for that.

Paul said, "Got some energy? Portuguese energy? Lis-BOA energy! OK, One, two, three, FOUR!!" and launched into "I Saw Her Standing There."

When he came back for the last encore he carried the flag of Portugal. The crowd went wild. He teased the cheering the crowd and said, "Bem agora vamos ter de vos deixar." (Good, now we have to leave.) They said, NO!" Paul said, " Let's get heavy," and he started "Helter Skelter."

Next he said, "Do you want to rock 'n' roll?" and "Sgt. Pepper" started. The band traded off solos guitar riffs which went on longer than usual even after Rusty broke a string. Rusty never missed a note!

There was an explosion of fireworks when Paul hit the last chord of "The End." Confetti shot of out of the sides of the stage covering the crowd and Paul said, "Até à próxima Lisboa!" (See you next time Lisbon!)

After Paul left the stage, the fireworks continued for a total of ten minutes!
