Sir Paul ensures dry gig

Sir Paul McCartney ensured his 3,000th gig wasn't washed out, as he arranged for dry ice to sprayed on clouds above the venue.

The Sun says organisers spent £20,000 in arranging for three jets to spray the clouds above St. Petersburg.

The operation worked, and sunshine broke through minutes before Mc Cartney went on stage to the cheers of 100,000 fans.

A source close to the 62-year-old said: "He thought it was a fantastic idea. The dry ice helps hold the water within the clouds."

A similar technique was also used by Russian president Vladimir Putin, ahead of the city's 300th anniversary celebrations.

His tour is set to end in front of 120,000 fans at Glastonbury.

Paul chatted with fans when he left the Ritz Hotel around 4pm. He arrived at Stade de France before 4:30 and started the soundcheck which lasted one hour. Songs heard at the soundcheck:

A jam which sounded something like "Why don't you get rising..." "Coming up," "Matchbox," "Honey Don't," Improvisation, "C Moon" "Celebration," "San Francisco Bay Blues," "Midnight Special," "Follow Me," 8 to 10 minutes with no music, another improvisation, "Lady Madonna," and "Baby Face."

Paul performed to 50,000 people at Stade de France. He wore a red button down shirt with white circles on it, black jeans and the purple Nehru jacket. The concert started late at 9:15pm. As soon as Paul got onstage the crowd on the lawn rushed the stage.

There was a setlist change, "Michelle" was added to the acoustic set just before "Eleanor Rigby."

Paul conducted the "Yellow Submarine" singalong after "All Things Must Pass."

There was no 'slow' intro to "Band On the Run."

Before "I Saw Her Standing There "he said in French, "Vous en voulez encore?" (Do you want more?) The crowd demanded more.

Macca threw his "no more land mines" T-shirt into the crowd and Brian threw his tambourine at the end of the show.

McCARTNEY WOWS GLASTO

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY paid a moving tribute to JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON during a Greatest Hits set this evening at the GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL.

The 62 year-old rock legend, playing his first ever UK festival, had a packed Pyramid Stage enthralled with a two-hour gig that had the 80,000 crowd singing along passionately to every word.

During the set, an emotional Paul said sometimes people don’t take the opportunity to say their real feelings before someone passes away, before talking about his old bandmate John Lennon. At the mere mention of his name, the crowd erupted into mass applause.

McCartney then played his solo song ’Here Today’, inspired by Lennon, before covering George Harrison’s ’All Things Must Pass’.

The crowd then started singing ’Yellow Submarine’, originally sung by Ringo Starr, to complete the Beatles tribute.

Sir Paul recently played his 3,000th live show, but had never played a UK festival with the Beatles, Wings or solo. He was originally due to play last year on the same slot, but because Radiohead were already booked, he had to wait 12 months for his chance.

Among the Beatles classics played were ’Yesterday’, 'Got To Get You Into My Life’, ’We Can Work It Out’ and ’Blackbird’. But the highlight was when he led the massive crowd through a mass singalong to ’Hey Jude’ and ’Helter Skelter’.

He also ran through Wings and solo classics including the James Bond theme ’Live And Let Die’, backed by a theatrical firework and pyrotechnics display.

Mike McCartney told a BBC commentator that Paul's helicopter couldn't land at Glastonbury because of the weather and had to be diverted 20 miles away to Bristol Airport, which caused his concert to be delayed.

Paul performed on the Pyramid Stage to 100,000 + mud covered, rainsoaked concertgoers. Because the stage was prebuilt for the festival, only the video screens behind Paul were used from his stage. Paul was last act to perform around 11:30 pm and his set lasted two hours. BBC 2 and BBC 3 aired the last part of the concert on television in the UK switching annoyingly from one station to another in the middle of Paul's concert.

After "Get Back" Paul said, "Get Back Glastonbury...and the weather turned out good!" Paul welcomed the live coverage from the BBC and the crowd cheered.

"Live and Let Die" had the usual stage flame throwers and pyrothechniques onstage, but at the end of the song the sky was lit up in a spectacular fireworks display.

Paul led a lively singalong of "Hey Jude" with the audience of 100,000 joining in on the "nah-nah-nahs." Paul shouted, "I can't stop this thing!" and continue with a few more codas before he finished the song. Then the band took their bows for the encore left the stage and Paul came back wearing the 'no more land mines' T-shirt.

After "Yesterday" Paul said, "This is a new song for Glastonbury," and performed for the first time in concert "Follow Me" which has only been performed at soundchecks during this tour.

"Now here's an old song for Glastonbury," he said for the intro to "Let It Be."

He kidded with the crowd and said, "Is it possible to rock in wellies? (rubber boots) Yes it is!" Then launched into, "I Saw Her Standing There."

Paul thanked Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis "for lending me his field!" and began "Helter Skelter, " with the audience singing, "Helter skelter...helter skelter..."

When the song finished Paul told the audience, "It's time to go home!" The audience protested. He continued, "Time for us to go home and time for you to go home... Oh, no! This IS your home!" The crowd who wasn't going anywhere with another day left of the festival, cheered. Paul thanked his crew and band since it was the last night of the tour and thanked the crowd. He began "Sgt. Pepper" and finished with "The End."

Paul and the bands took their bows and before Paul left the stage he said, "See you next time!"

Это был не фестиваль, а благотворительный концерт в пользу центра музтерапии Нордоффа-Роббинса и школы исполнительских искусств БРИТ, данный обладателями награды "Silver Clef". Эта награда вручается музыкантам, внесшим особый (в том числе материальный) вклад в развитие музтерапии.

Follow me - замечательная вещь! слушаю и наслаждаюсь. Жалко что он не исполнял её на всех концертах в т.ч. у нас..... я думаю песня многим бы понравилась.

Unconfirm reports from Japan say that Paul will tour there in February. March/April rumors are circulating in Australia and in the US, rumors place his tour around April/May.

Saturday hero Paul McCartney on ley lines, Charles Manson and all things "Glastonberic."

Q: Sir Paul- what kept you?

PAUL: I know that there have been rumors about me playing Glastonbury for years, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time I'd actually been asked. I really wanted to do it, because it's a legend and I've never been there before, not even to watch. In fact, I'd sort of missed out on festivals all my life--The Beatles never played one and it never happened with Wings or solo either. So it was high time.|

When it was confirmed, I started reading all the books about the place, the ley lines. They're groovy but unpredictable! I love all that. And it was a good moment for me to do it, too, because I've got this band and we make a good noise. We like playing with each other -- as the actress etc. But I couldn't have gone into a gig like this cold, so I organized a month's tour in Europe to get the set right.

Q: Did it work?

PAUL: We certainly worked on some special stuff. One of the joys of playing live now is discovering how many songs I've never played in concert. There's a few we found which I think are particularly Glastonberic like doing "Helter Skelter" live for the first time ever. It's not really that I've steered clear of it because of the Manson thing, although it's obviously not the greatest association. What the heck, he got it wrong. It's just a song about a fairground ride, you know!

Q: The song still seems a touch incongruous for Glastonbury.

PAUL: Well, I seem to keep it fresh and avoid writer's block by working in different ways. One interesting change came out of my publishing "Blackbird Singing," my book of lyrics and poetry. I got asked to do some readings at literary festivals, places like the Hay festival, and that led me on to writing the words first, then putting them to music. My songwriting had never worked like that before.

Q: What's next?

PAUL: In March and April I started work on a new album with David Kahne, who produced "Driving Rain," and then I was out in Los Angeles with Nigel Godrich. I'm going to make a great album. That's what I'm saying. Not "I hope to", but "I will." That's how you have to approach it.

Apart from that I'm adapting my chorale "Ecce Cor Meum," which has already been performed at Magdalen College, Oxford. I'm hoping we'll record it later this year. The title means "Behold My Heart" and it is a personal statement, although, to me, the music means more than the words. Still, there's this illusion that I'm always working because of all these projects I've done in recent years. It's not like that. Now I'm going to take July and August off. Not many people can do that, can they? I'm a lucky man.
