Bono and Marquez defend Argentina's debt
31/07/2004

Rock star Bono and writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez have signed a statement that has appeared in American newspapers - defending Argentina's debt restructuring offer.

The U2 singer, Nobel literature laureate Marquez and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev have all added their signature to the quarter-page advertisement proclaiming: "Argentina, a responsible country, a responsible proposal."

The ad, which appears in The New York Times and The Financial Times, continues: "Any increase in the fiscal effort would ignore the Argentine social reality.

"Argentina's sincere and realistic proposal to creditors should be understood within this context, taking into account the historic perspective of a developing country and its inhabitants' social reality."

Other celebrities to sign include Emma Thompson, Viggo Mortensen and world chess champion Anatoly Karpov.

At present, 50 per cent of the Argentine population live in poverty and 15 per cent are unemployed.

Bono Sang at Funeral for Susan Buffett Bono Sang at Funeral for Susan Buffett
Thu Aug 5

OMAHA, Neb. - Bono sang at a private funeral for Susan Buffett, wife of billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

The lead singer of U2 flew into Omaha Sunday night and left shortly after Monday's service at Countryside Community Church. She and Bono had shared a concern for AIDS awareness and prevention.

Buffett, 72, died of a stroke last Thursday while she and her husband were visiting friends in Cody, Wyo. The funeral was limited almost entirely to members of the immediate family.

Bono says he could have been a speech writer

Bono says if he wasn't a rock star he probably would have made a living as a speech writer for causes he believes in. And he admits that he doesn't think some of his lyrics are very good.

The 44-year-old U2 frontman told the Los Angeles Times that when he now listens to Bad which the band sung at Live Aid in 1985 he isn't impressed with the lyrics and doesn't think their 1987 hit Where The Streets Have No Name rhymes very well.

He says, "When I look at our first 10 years, I just hear unfinished work, lyrics we never finished because we ran out of studio time. I hear Bad and see what's not there. I just see a list of failures."

But, Bono says the band manage to capture a "spirit" rather than aim for craftsmanship in their songwriting.

"Feelings are stronger than ideas or words in a song. You can have 1,000 ideas, but unless you capture an emotion, it's an essay.

"I'm always writing speeches or articles for causes I believe in. That's probably what I would have done if I wasn't in music, but that's not songwriting," he said.

Bono says the opening couplet to Where The Streets Have No Name "is one of the most banal couplets I've ever heard," but says that when the band play the song live it becomes "something else."

Talking about the band's songwriting process where all four members contribute and are given a royalty credit, Bono says U2 are more like "Miles Davis than The Beatles" where John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote most of the songs.

U2 are due to release a new album in November, the band's first album since 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind.

Rare Photos Reveal U2's 'Show'

More than 400 rare photographs and illustrations will chronicle U2's live performance history in the book "U2 Show: The Art of Touring." Assembled by photographer Diana Scrimgeour with the full cooperation of U2 and its associates, the 312-page volume will hit bookstores Oct. 21 via Riverhead Books.

"Diana did an amazing job -- it all comes together really well," Riverhead senior editor Sean McDonald tells Billboard.com. "U2 has put together some pretty spectacular shows over the years, from the famous Red Rocks show to the extravagant ZooTV and PopMart tours to the much calmer Elevation shows. And the book is appropriately spectacular, I think -- lavish when it needs to be, more intimate when it needs to be."

Besides U2's members, such music luminaries as Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois and artists Peter Gabriel and Steven Van Zandt were interviewed for or contributed to the project.

"U2 Show" also features reminiscences from "all the people involved on the ground in putting together a U2 performance, like stagehands and the lighting guys," McDonald says. "These are the people who have been really involved in making U2 what they are."

The volume is not being specifically tied in to the release of U2's long-awaited new Interscope studio album, which is expected sometime this fall. "It would be great for us if [the album] came out at the same time," McDonald says. "Clearly it's expected to be around that time."

U2 To Drop New Album In November U2 To Drop New Album In November

U2's as-yet-untitled new studio album will be released Nov. 22 internationally and a day later in North America via Interscope. First single "Vertigo" will hit radio in late September, to be followed by a video. A commercial single is tentatively due for a Nov. 8 international release.

A spokesperson for the band's Dublin-based Principle Management says the information is "broadly correct" but would not confirm specific details.

Even though a disc featuring album tracks was reported stolen during a photo shoot last month in France, few details have emerged about the set. Among the song titles mentioned in recent comments by band members are "Tough" and "Full Metal Jacket."

Author/band friend Neil McCormick recently told Ireland's Hot Press magazine that the album featured "an interesting title, an interesting philosophical idea as a title, and quite a difficult title."

As first reported here in February, production was handled by Steve Lillywhite, who has worked on such past U2 albums as "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby."

The upcoming release will be the follow-up to 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind," which has sold more than 4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. A world tour is expected to launch early next year.

Preceding the album will be the photo book "U2 Show: The Art of Touring," due Oct. 21 via Riverhead Books. More than 400 rare photographs and illustrations appear in the volume, which chronicles the band's live performance history.

U2 GET HIGH

U2 have confirmed more details of their new album to NME.COM.

The currently untitled record is set for release on November 22. NME.COM can reveal titles of some of the songs on the record will be ‘Vertigo’, ‘Man And A Woman’, ‘Yahweh’, ‘Crumbs From Your Table’ and ‘City Of Blinding Lights’.

NME.COM understands that ‘Vertigo’ is a likely single, although a spokesperson for the band was unable to confirm it.

As previously reported on NME.COM, a CD containing some new songs from the album went missing during a photo session in Nice.

Singer Bono said that the band would be willing to release the record early, rather than face an online leak four months before release.

He said: "If it is on the Internet this week, we will release it immediately as a legal download on iTunes, and get hard copies into the shops by the end of the month. It would be a real pity. It would screw up years of work and months of planning, not to mention f**king up our holidays. But once it's out, it's out."

The album is the follow-up to 2000’s ’All That You Can’t Leave Behind’.

Other songs include "A Man and a Woman," "Crumbs From Your Table," "Yahweh," "City of Blinding Lights" and "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own." "Vertigo" is due to arrive at U.S. radio outlets in late September.

The upcoming release will be the follow-up to 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind," which has sold more than 4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. A world tour is expected to launch early next year.

Bono takes aid cause to Republicans
03/09/2004

Bono has appealed to American Republicans to tackle the Aids crisis in Africa if they win a second term at the November elections.

The Beautiful Day rocker spoke to Fox News reporter Bill O'Reilly at New York's Madison Square Garden during this week's Republican National Convention.

Bono says: "I'm a non-partisan guy. Yes, I've stopped rooting. I'm rooting for people that don't have a vote and for people whose faces we don't see."

Bono's co-founded organisation Debt Aids Trade Africa (DATA) encourages first world countries to drop Africa's debt and is hoping America's pharmaceutical companies will send Aids and HIV drugs to the continent.

Bono laments: "It's an emergency - 69,000 Africans dying every day of a preventable, treatable disease.

"Look, if you see a car crash, somebody's lying there in the middle of the road bleeding and it turns out they're a drunk driver, you're still going to call an ambulance.

"We can't make these judgments about entire civilizations. We try to re-educate people. We try to deal with the problem."

THE EDGE WINGS IT!

U2 guitarist THE EDGE has taken time out from making the band’s new album to compose his second 'BATMAN' theme.

Back in 1995, U2 wrote ‘Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me’ as the theme for ‘Batman Forever'.

Now The Edge has recorded the theme music to new a new animated series ‘The Batman’ on the American WB network. He told MTV: "It was really just a case of creating a bedrock of something tough and slightly menacing that wasn’t necessarily too heavy and dark.

"The great thing about the whole 'Batman' idea is that it strips down life to the battle between good and evil. You can relate to different sides of that battle at different times."

The new series is set in the third year of millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne’s secret life as the caped vigilante, and sees him come into contact for the first time with villains The Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler and Mr Freeze for the first time.

As reported yesterday, U2’s new album will be called ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ and will be released on November 22. It is preceded by a single, ‘Vertigo’, on November 8.

U2 to Go Wilde for New Film

Rocker Bono is to join Hollywood legends and sporting greats when he makes his screen debut this year.

The U2 star and his bandmate Larry Mullen have been lined up to appear in a film celebrating the 150th birthday of Irish playwright Oscar Wilde.

Actors Liam Neeson, Charlie Sheen, ex-Spice Girl Mel B., Irish rugby ace Brian O'Driscoll, director Jim Sheridan and actress Joan Rivers also star in the movie.

Happy Birthday Oscar Wilde is the brainchild of director Bill Hughes, who was born on the same day as the literary legend.

Hughes said: "It's the biggest project I've ever been involved with and
it's been so much fun. It's like an extended spoken pop video.

"We've chosen 150 lines for 150 people. I've already recorded Bono, Larry Mullen and Tina Kellegher."

The film, in aid of Amnesty International, will be screened on TV at
Christmas.

BARRETSTOWN'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA BALL

Barretstown celebrated helping 10,000 kids in 10 years with a glittering gala ball.

Paul McCartney, Heather Mills and U2's The Edge joined a host of top socialites to mark the 10th birthday with Hollywood actor Paul Newman, who founded the camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses on September 4.

MC for the night was Father Ted's Ardal O'Hanlon and the guests dined and danced in a spectacular Kuam marquee in the grounds of Barretstown Castle, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare.

The highlight of the night was when McCartney joined The Edge on stage to sing a duet of Peggy Sue while McCartney played the specially-commissioned Barretstown guitar. The guitar, made by Mark Nicol of County Wexford in the shape of the charity's castle logo, was snapped up by Cork art dealer Theo Waddington for a cool ¤55,000 ($66,726). Other items in the auction, led by Nick Nugent of Goffs, included a corporate package to see Manchester United play Liverpool at Old Trafford, a place on the Barretstown Challenge Trek to Brazil and a Golfing package to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Barretstown needs to raise ¤4 million ($4.8 million) each year to fund its programs of challenges, activities and fun which aid in the recovery of sick children from across Europe.

The star-studded occasion raised ¤440,000 ($533,808) for the charity on the night.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - U2 has confirmed the full track list for its upcoming album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," due Nov. 23 via Interscope.

The set does not include the tracks "Tough" or "Full Metal Jacket," which band members previously had mentioned as possible selections. Among the newly announced titles are "Miracle Drug," "One Step Closer" and "Love and Peace or Else."

The album's first single, "Vertigo," is already making a bomb-size impact on U.S. radio outlets. After just three days of airplay, the cut is expected to debut this week in the top 20 of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and the top 30 of the Mainstream Rock Tracks tally.

At present, "Vertigo" is available for download exclusively via Apple's iTunes Music Store. According to a spokesperson, the track ascended into the service's top 10 within 24 hours and is now No. 1 on the list of most downloaded selections.

U2's official Web site (http://www.u2.com) is hosting clips of the band performing "Vertigo" in its Dublin recording studio plus other exclusive footage of a recent photo shoot.

And while the band is not expected to begin touring until next spring, tidbits have begun leaking out about specific stops. According to Ireland's Sunday Business Report, U2 will play Dublin's Croke Park on June 26-27, with the possibility of a third show, depending on demand.

Here is the track list for "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb":
