SONY BMG MASTERWORKS/COLUMBIA RECORDSSONY BMG MASTERWORKS/COLUMBIA RECORDS
READIES THE RELEASE OF ROGER WATERS' LONG-AWAITED CLASSICAL OPERA, "ÇA IRA"

Lavish First Edition DigiPack Includes Full Opera On Two Hybrid SACDs,
Bonus "Making Of 'Ça Ira '" DVD, & 60-Page Four-Color Booklet Containing Libretto, Cast Credits, & Original Illustrations

"Ça Ira" In Stores Tuesday, September 27

Sony BMG Masterworks/Columbia Records is proud to announce the release of "Ça Ira," Roger Waters long-awaited "operatic history of the French Revolution," on Tuesday, September 27.

The lavish first edition of "Ça Ira," an opera in three acts for full orchestra, soloists and choirs, will include a double SACD DigiPack and a deluxe 60 page four-color booklet including Roger Waters' lyrics based on Etienne Roda-Gil's original French libretto, the original illustrations created by Nadine Roda-Gil, biographies of Waters and the opera's cast, background and production notes on the opera.

As a bonus for Roger Waters fans, "Ça Ira" includes a special DVD documentary chronicling the "making of" the opera. The "Ça Ira" DVD traces the history of the project, from conception to completion, and includes revelatory interviews with Waters and the musicians and cast of "Ça Ira" as well as exclusive in-the-studio footage of the recording of the opera.

"Ça Ira" is being released in the hybrid SACD (Super Audio CD) format in Dolby Digital 5.1 SurroundSound. The hybrid SACD disks are compatible with standard CD players.

Waters, who co-founded the groundbreaking rock group Pink Floyd in 1966, began to bridge the worlds of rock and classical music in such pioneering major works as "The Dark Side Of The Moon" (1973) and "The Wall" (1979) in which he incorporated elements of operatic form--theatricality, coherent narrative, dramatic arcs, thematic music and song cycles--in a pop context.

Waters' work on "Ça Ira," his first opera for full orchestra and voice, began in 1989, during the Bicentennial of the French Revolution. The well-respected and successful songwriter Etienne Roda-Gil and his wife, Nadine, had created an original libretto for an opera, written in French, as part of the Bicentennial. Entitled "Ça Ira," after a revolutionary song of the period, the Roda-Gil's original manuscript, copiously and beautifully illustrated by Nadine, portrayed the events and the spirit of the French Revolution through a multitude of perspectives--ranging from Marie Antoinette to the eyes and ears of the period's revolutionaries and common people--using a circus as a central theatrical framing device and metaphor.

Introduced to Etienne Roda-Gil by a mutual friend, Waters was immediately and deeply impressed by the passion and the power of Etienne's manuscript and began work on creating a full orchestral score for "Ça Ira." Work on the project was suspended when Nadine died tragically of leukemia. Several years passed before Roger and Etienne returned to "Ça Ira."

In 1997, Roger began writing an English version of the text. "It's not just a translation," he says. "I've stuck very much to the spirit of Etienne's original, adding to it somewhat. Although it's rooted in the history of the revolution, its philosophical slant is, I suppose, contemporary as well. It's more than just a history of the French Revolution, it's a piece about the human potential for change."

The finished version of "Ça Ira" features orchestration and choral arrangements by Rick Wentworth and Roger Waters, also the album's producers. Principal characters in the opera are brought to life by the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel (the Ringmaster, the Troublemaker, Louis Capet - the King of France); internationally acclaimed soprano Ying Huang (Marie Marianne - the Voice of Liberty, Reason and the Republic, Marie Antoinette - the Queen of France); American tenor Paul Groves (A Revolutionary Priest, A Military Officer); and Nigerian "one man orchestra" Ismael Lo (a Revolutionary Slave). Other parts are sung by Jamie Bower (Honest Bird - the young Revolutionary Priest) and Helen Russill (Madame Antoine - the young Marie Antoinette).

Before the rise and fall of the guillotine, before the terror took hold, the People of France fought for a better world based on the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity rather than one ruled by a callous and outmoded nobility. It is this story of hope and promise that inspired "Ça Ira." Set during the optimistic early days of the French Revolution, "Ça Ira is a work of stunning power and beauty, invoking the passion, madness, and triumph of faith in a time that forever changed the nature of the world.

The official sites, www.roger-waters.com and www.ca-ira.com, have been updated to include the cover art of the forthcoming release of Roger's opera, Ca Ira (and also the statement Roger made at the start of the week concerning the Live 8 reunion). The cover of Ca Ira ("An Opera In Three Acts") includes the blue-white-red of the tricolor - the French flag.

The flag itself was created a few days after the taking of the Bastille (July 1789) which is one of the themes of Roger's work, and is the combination of the royal white with the Parisian red and blue. The cover art is less rigid than the flag, with washes of the three colours across the image (the red being formalised into the shape of a formal building, perhaps a chateau).

The "lavish first edition digipack" will include the full opera on two hybrid SACDs (playable on normal CD players), with a bonus "Making Of 'Ca Ira'" DVD (of which we will be bringing you more details of shortly), and a 60-page four-colour booklet containing the libretto, cast credits, and original illustrations. It will be in stores on/around Tuesday, September 27th worldwide.

There is still talk that Roger will be conducting a special performance in Rome, in November this year. As yet, no details of the exact date or location (should the concert indeed happen) are available.

NICK MASON INTERVIEWED ABOUT LIVE 8 PINK FLOYD/ROGER WATERS REUNION

Live 8
Nick Mason undertook a couple of interviews yesterday for the British media, concerning the reunion of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters at the London Live 8 concert, being held on July 2nd.

The first was in the BBC Radio 4 morning show, The Today Programme, where they took a look at how and why bands get back together. In the interview, which can be heard through this link, Nick talks of the background to the split: "The only real issue was whether we should've - and this is from Roger's point of view - should've carried on without him, or the band cease to exist when he left. And that really is what the issue was about."

A longer interview, covering new ground, was aired last night on the ITN News broadcast on TV channel ITV1 in the UK. Nick was interviewed in his office at Ten Tenths, in London, with band and racing car memorabilia in the background.

Following a montage of shots from the Money backdrop film, the Another Brick video, and clips from Live At Pompeii, the interviewer James Mates starts his questioning:

Mates: They're resisted every effort to get back together, until Bob Geldof got on the phone...

Mason: He was really looking for a real novelty act! To reconstitute this particular line-up of this particular band, was a great idea, and it was really Bob promoting this.

Mates: He got on the phone to you all?

Mason: Yeah. He started with David, and then he worked his way around. I think he was probably as surprised as we were!

Richard Curtis said to me, 'Well, look, if the Pink Floyd can agree on what to play, surely the G8 summit can agree on what to do, to sort out Africa'.

Mates: The band have agreed to play four of their classic numbers. Which ones, we'll have to wait and see...

Mason: Hopefully they'll be fairly slow numbers, because at my advanced stage I don't want anything too fast!

Mates: What are your hopes for the day?

Mason: I think a bit like the original Live Aid - what one would like, is for it to be utterly memorable; for everyone who was there to remember it as a really important and great event.

The interview can be viewed through this link over at Keith Jordan's Neptune PF site.

TICKET UPDATE
In seperate Live 8 news, the sale of tickets on eBay has been stopped. Pairs of tickets appeared on the online auction site minutes after the first winning notifications were sent via text message, and were selling for many hundreds of pounds. Some of the sellers were blatently profiteering, which enraged many, not least Bob Geldof who put huge pressure on the people running eBay to put a halt to the sales.

One of the UK's biggest selling newspapers, The Sun, is today calling for the capacity of the London concert to be increased to 350,000, which will add 200,000 onto the current number. Hyde Park can easily handle this number of people, and the newspaper argue that it will raise further revenue for the event, without money going to ticket touts and profiteers. We'll keep you posted on any update to this story.

Also, a request: please don't ask us to get tickets for the show for you - we're having enough of a problem getting a ticket for ourselves at the moment, and cannot advise of any outlet selling the tickets. We have been deluged with requests for tickets from people all over the world and wish we could help...

More information on the show/the band's appearance will be with you as soon as we have it.

PINK FLOYD'S LONDON 1966-1967 REMASTER UPDATEPINK FLOYD'S "LONDON 1966-1967" REMASTER UPDATE

Pink Floyd "London 1966-1967"
The remastered, 20-bit reissue of Pink Floyd "London 1966-1967", which features a full length studio version of "Interstellar Overdrive" and the otherwise unheard "Nick's Boogie", was due to be released on 20th June. We heard from the company releasing it yesterday who told us that the date has slipped to 4th July. No further delays are anticipated.

The tracks on the CD were recorded at the now defunct Sound Techniques Studio, London, on the 11th and 12th of January 1967 for Peter Whitehead's "Tonight Let's Make Love In London" film.

The recording sessions were filmed, and some of the footage from the session and from Whitehead's film is included on the CD as bonus content, that can be viewed on PCs and Apple Mac computers, as it is in Apple's Quicktime format, which can be played on most computer platforms.

Here's the full tracklisting for this release:

Interstellar Overdrive (Full Length Version) 16.46
Nick's Boogie 11.50
Full length video of Interstellar Overdrive (Mac/PC)
Interview footage from the 1960s of Mick Jagger, David Hockney, Michael Caine, Julie Christie, and an overview by the director, Peter Whitehead
