Blondie Give Man City Permission To Use Song

Blondie have given Manchester City permission to rework one of their songs and use it as the team run out onto the pitch.

Man City manager Stuart Pearce is a well known fan of 70s punk and asked if the club could use Blondie’s Union City Blues as their new anthem.

Debbie Harry has now given her blessing and Pearce has approached Ray Goodwin from Manchester band The Sounds Alliance to do their own version of the songs reports The Sun.

Goodwin also plans to release his version of the song, entitled 'Manchester City Blue' with the hope of it hitting the top of the charts.

"You could tell I was no debutante," Debbie Harry sang on Dreaming, as she delivered yet another monster hit. For all her coquettish mannerisms and extraordinary physical attributes, the truth of this phrase was abundantly clear to anyone at the Albert Hall last night.




In many ways, the years appeared to have been kind to Blondie. Despite the keyboard player, whose sleeveless T-shirt and cheesy sunglasses seemed to represent all that was wrong with the Eighties, and the lead guitarist who looked like Bernie Ecclestone, the group seemed to retain some of the cool, punky dangerous vibe they displayed in their heyday, when they pioneered not just a sound, but a look and a use of video that was hugely influential.



Newer material went down well with the crowd, most of whom were clearly die-hard fans, but it was when they launched into their Number-One hit, Hanging On The Telephone, that the atmosphere became frenzied. But Harry's performance on this track was far from perfect, and the audience's delight quickly became muted as she repeatedly fluffed her cues to start singing.

It was also at this point that it became clear that her voice has lost much of its wispy, angelic charm. Arguably stronger, her singing nonetheless sounded harsh and forced at times, the antithesis of the detached icemaiden sound with which she made her name.

With The Tide Is High and Maria, on the other hand, Harry was back on form, her voice more comfortable, and her rapport with the audience warm and effective.

With strong, gritty guitar work and brilliant drumming, the other members of the group certainly came across as far more than a backing band. Ultimately, however, Blondie stands and falls, as it always did, on the performance of Debbie Harry.

While she may have pleased her fans and put on an impressive showing for someone who has fronted the group for almost 30 years, her efforts to do justice to her brilliant back catalogue were not quite sufficient.

- ага, тем более, что по отдельности они мало что собой представляют. Вспомнить хотя бы сольники Дебби.

Если они все-таки разойдутся, то их реюнион станет для всех них "лебединой песней", а сами они строевым шагом отправятся в архив и станут разве что героями рубрики "Где они теперь?" или "Забытые имена". Типа: "А ведь я когда-то играл в Blondie..."

Разве что Клем Берк не пропадет - такого барабанщика любая группа примет с распростертыми объятиями.

No Cars, Blondie

Saturday’s New Cars/Blondie concert at Chastain Park Amphitheatre has been postponed because Cars guitarist Elliot Easton broke his left clavicle after a near crash June 5 on the tour bus. He played four more shows but was told by doctors he needed surgery. Easton is in New York recuperating. A new date has not been announced, but tickets will be honored later.

Featuring Blondie, Sleeping Kings of Iona, BeArthur and others on Tuesday at Albright-Knox Art Gallery.


For the second year in a row, Louis Grachos and his team at the Albright-Knox moved their annual Rockin' At the Knox fund-raiser/concert outdoors to the museum's front parking lot and put together a killer bill with local bands and a legendary headliner.
Last year, Wilco and My Morning Jacket topped the bill. Tuesday evening, new wave-punk progenitor Blondie capped a program that also featured several local artists of considerable repute.

The show very nearly fell apart. Blondie has been on tour this summer with the New Cars, featuring Todd Rundgren, but a recent tour bus accident put Cars guitarist Elliott Easton out of commission with a broken clavicle, and the entire tour was canceled. That made Tuesday's show an even more significant one for Blondie, as it is the band's only show on the current horizon.

Early on, Fredonia funk masters BeArthur made their third recent appearance in Buffalo, after a pair of stunning groove-athons at Thursday At the Square and the Music Is Art festival. Once again, the band brought its sterling pop sensibilities to bear on its R&B and '70s soul-funk tunes and turned in a riveting show.

Another bright young Western New York band, Sleeping Kings of Iona, stole the show on the secondary stage with a gorgeous, sweeping set of tunes blending electronica, ambient music, and spacious, progressive-leaning mood pieces. This is a band to watch, and one that is quite likely to gain itself an international reputation in the underground alternative world if it continues on its current path.


The highlight of the evening, of course, was Blondie's set.

There was considerable buzz among the music lovers in the crowd prior to the band's taking the stage. Though Deborah Harry, Blondie's singer and frontwoman, has been to Buffalo several times with the amazing Jazz Passengers, Blondie has not played our city in years. Would they be up to snuff? Was this just an oldies act, an opportunity for the band to cash in on its prior glory in order to tuck some money away? Would Debbie Harry still really be the Debbie Harry we remember?

There was no need for any of us to have worried, as the group made clear only minutes after taking the stage and launching into "Call Me." Harry still has it.

And the group - original members Chris Stein, guitar; Jimmy Destri, keyboards; Clem Burke, (drums); and relative newbies guitarist Paul Carbonara and bassist Leigh Foxx - kicked it hard.

Blondie's magic has always been in the way it manages to blend pop with new wave and punk. Stylistic mavericks, the group ate every idiom it came upon, and spat it all back out as a wholly unique amalgamation of edgy pop.

The band dished all of this out, in a rapid-fire slamfest of songs everyone in attendance knew like the back of their hands.


But it was with a cover that Blondie stole our hearts forever.

Roxy Music's "More Than This" boasts an indelible melody line, and Blondie's take on the tune was absolutely sublime.

Harry, who was divine all evening - singing beautifully and working her sensual charm on the crowd like the seasoned virtuoso she is - intoned this song in an intimate fashion, and truly brought it home to the heart. Stein offered a gorgeous guitar solo, and the crowd swayed and sang along.

All told, a sublime evening.
