Studio Recordings is a comprehensive box set that contains expanded and remastered editions of Paul Simon's nine studio albums from 1972's Paul Simon to 2000's You're the One. There may be a lack of new liner notes, but the tremendous remastering and addition of revealing demos and alternate takes makes this a first-class reissue.

Simon and Garfunkel played only their second UK concert in more than 20 years to 50,000 fans at London's Hyde Park on Thursday.

Few acts can rival Simon and Garfunkel's famous catalogue of hits in capturing the elusive spirit of mid-1960s America.

Nearly 40 years after their heyday, there is little in pop and rock music as evocative of a time, a place and the mood of an era.

Framed somewhere between Kennedy's death and the march of Vietnam, Simon's songs and Garfunkel's angelic voice distilled the end-of-innocence transition from folky optimism to poignant reflection.

The duo's harmonies seem forever destined to form the soundtrack for grainy footage of civil rights marches and stripey-scarved students at campus sit-ins.

But these are truly classic songs which have not only survived but aged well, sounding fresh and invigorated when replicated live - 50 years after the pair, now both 63, met and forged their friendship.

Heralding their arrival on stage, a series of video images on a giant screen replays iconic moments in culture - from the moon landings and a disco floor to the Berlin Wall's collapse and the Millennium celebrations.

Interspersed with mischievous shots of the pair's changing hairlines and dodgy fashion choices, the message seems to be: 'Not only have we witnessed and survived all this, we're intact and as vital as ever'. And so it would prove.

The sight of them physically side by side is an instantly recognisable delight, one much loved by the caricaturists: Garfunkel, tall and serene, the lion's mane of hair still framing his studied features. Simon, diminutive and fluid, rocking with his acoustic guitar.

"Here's a song about my country, and a time and place that no longer exists," says Garfunkel introducing America, Simon's mythical journey into the soul of a nation that symbolised a generation's idealism.

Anniversary

While unashamedly nostalgic and bordering on the sentimental, there is also a playful undertone, with both parties - noted for their fall-outs over the years - drawing on the irony of the tour's Old Friends title.

"This is now the 50th anniversary of the friendship that I hold very close to me," says Garfunkel, before Simon counters: "Fourteen years old we started to argue. That makes this the 48th anniversary (of us arguing)."

Introducing musical heroes The Everly Brothers, the four run through a celebratory Bye Bye Love with an energy that belies a combined age pushing 250.

The show - part of a tour which will reputedly make the duo £30m - is also an upbeat affair, with electric guitars, piano and occasional strings joining their more pastoral moments.

An enthusiastic crowd cheerily greets gem after gem: The Sound of Silence, I Am A Rock, Homeward Bound, Keep The Customer Satisfied, Kathy's Song, Hazy Shade Of Winter, Scarborough Fair, The Boxer, Mrs Robinson...

Will Young, Zoe Ball and Little Britain's Matt Lucas are among the revellers at Hyde Park on a still midsummer's night for what will probably be the last UK approximation of the duo's legendary New York Central Park concert.

The set ends with the hymnal Bridge Over Troubled Water, and 50,000 people are rapt.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Folk-rock troubadours Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel will end their "Old Friends" reunion tour with a free concert in front of Rome's historic Colosseum on Saturday, the duo's publicist said on Wednesday.
The concert, which will also include the harmony singing Everly Brothers, will mark Simon & Garfunkel's first appearance together in Italy.

Simon and Garfunkel, both 62, with more than 40 million records sold in the United States including such hits as "The Sound of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," kicked off the tour in October. It is their first concert tour as a duo in some 20 years.

Simon and Garfunkel play huge gig

Simon and Garfunkel have performed to a crowd of 600,000 at a free concert in the Italian capital Rome.

The gig in front of the Colosseum was attended by 100,000 more people than a free Paul McCartney concert last year.

During the 1960s Simon and Garfunkel had success with hits such as The Sound of Silence but they split in 1970.

After their 1981 reunion, they did not play together again until 1993 for a series of gigs in New York, and then performed at the Grammy Awards in 2003.


Old Friends

Saturday's concert in Rome marked the end of the European leg of their Old Friends tour.

The European part of their tour kicked off in Manchester on 14 July.

As well as the UK and Italy, they played gigs in France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and The Netherlands.

Before the European dates, they peformed shows in 19 cities across the United States.

Simon and Garfunkel met as children in the New York borough of Queens and released their first record in the 1950s under the name of Tom and Jerry.

Some of their most famous songs include Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs Robinson and Scarborough Fair.

Duo's comeback tour a colossal success

On July 31st, in front of more than a half million Italian fans at the Colosseum in Rome, Simon and Garfunkel triumphantly closed their nine-month Old Friends Tour. The free show, which capped a successful twelve-city run through Europe, was the largest concert in Rome's history and a "right and fitting way to end this chapter of their career," says John Scher, the duo's co-manager.
"From my perspective, the most important thing that got accomplished was that Paul and Artie, who were friends since they were ten years old, are friends again," Scher adds. "They had a great time." Simon and Garfunkel will release a CD and DVD of the tour by year's end, but Scher won't speculate on whether the duo plans to record or tour again in the future.

The tour's first leg, last fall, was one of the year's most anticipated rock events, selling out twelve of its first fourteen U.S. dates and grossing $2.3 million per city, according to the concert-industry trade magazine Pollstar. By contrast, each of the nineteen U.S. stops on the second leg grossed less than half that -- about $1 million. That's partly due to more intimate venues, but industry experts also say big-city ticket prices -- around $100 on average, behind only Madonna, Celine Dion, Elton John and the Eagles -- didn't fly when the duo made its way to smaller markets such as Fresno, California, and Houston.

"It took us somewhat by surprise," Scher says. "In my view, the bottom fell out of the concert industry. Simon and Garfunkel suffered to some degree from this terrible atmosphere surrounding concerts in America." Indeed, the industry has been reeling -- with Lollapalooza canceled, Norah Jones downsized from arenas to theaters and tickets reduced at many poor-selling amphitheaters to as low as ten dollars.

European tours haven't taken as bad an economic hit. Simon and Garfunkel's trip through Europe, while not a sellout in every city, was more successful than the duo's sluggish U.S. stint in early 2004.

In Rome, managers and agents anticipated perhaps 300,000 fans for the pair's first local performance in twenty-two years. That the crowd would be so much larger didn't dawn on promoters until just before the show, which included touchstones such as "The Sounds of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." "It's an awful lot of people," says Barry Dickins, Simon's London agent. "And to end the European tour playing for 600,000 at the Colosseum is much better than playing some arena in Stuttgart that no one's ever heard of."

DVD, CD in Works from Simon & Garfunkel

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Although details were scant at deadline, Simon & Garfunkel are eyeing a Nov. 23 release for a DVD and deluxe CD chronicling their wildly successful Old Friends reunion tour.

The sets will be issued by Warner Bros., which released Simon & Garfunkel's landmark 1981 "Concert in Central Park."

The Old Friends tour ended in Rome on July 31; no announcement has been made regarding the possibility of future dates.

Paul Simon is at work on his next solo album with producer Brian Eno and will perform Monday (Oct. 4) at the ACLU-sponsored Freedom Concert at New York's Avery Fisher Hall.

Simon, Songwriters Honored at BMI Event

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Dozens of songwriters gathered to celebrate the BMI Pop Music Awards honoring Paul Simon and other colleagues. But some couldn't place the name of the organization that keeps tabs on their royalties.

Grammy-winner Paul Simon accepted the BMI Icon Award for career achievement. He didn't give an acceptance speech but did perform "Slip Slidin' Away".

Maroon 5, Brian Wilson, Joss Stone and Yolanda Adams also performed Simon's songs in the tribute.

Simon called the tributes "very touching."

"Great music is great music, and stands the test of time," said Grammy-winning gospel-soul singer Adams. "How many of us know Bridge Over Troubled Water? . . . You think about this man and he has a career that spans over 30 years."

Songwriter wins Icon award at annual BMI awards

Brian Wilson kicked off an all-star tribute to Paul Simon at the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles last night. The former Beach Boy joined a Simon tribute band on stage at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Grand Ballroom to perform "Sound of Silence" in honor of the veteran singer-songwriter, who was presented with the Icon award for his contributions to music. Yolanda Adams did a soulful take on Simon's classic "Bridge Over Troubled Water," while British soul sensation Joss Stone tackled "Mother and Child Reunion" and Maroon 5's Adam Levine and James Valentine performed "Homeward Bound."
Taking the stage to a standing ovation, Simon said he was humbled by the tribute, particularly coming from Wilson, who received the Icon award last year. "I'm so touched, Brian," a blushing Simon told the crowd. "Any of the guys from my generation -- to pay that tribute to me is just an honor." At the urging of BMI President and emcee for the evening Del Bryant, Simon then picked up a guitar for a solo performance of the Simon and Garfunkel classic "Slip Sliding Away."

Hip Hop mogul Lil Jon was also honored at the dinner, picking up the Songwriter of the Year nod for his work, including "Freek-A-Leek," "Get Low," "Damn!" and his hit with Usher, "Yeah!"

Other winners included 3 Doors Down, who picked up BMI's Pop Song of the Year for "Here Without You," and Nickelback, whose track "Someday" won BMI College Song of the Year. A special honor was also given to Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, songwriters for the Righteous Brothers classic "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," BMI's most performed composition, having been broadcast more than 10 million times.

Paul Simon and Jerry Seinfeld will perform at the One Night Only: A Concert for Autism Speaks benefit. The event will be held Sept. 24 at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre and will be hosted by Tom Brokaw. Proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks' efforts to educate the public about the disorder and fund research into its cause. Tickets begin at $100 and go on sale Aug. 15 via Ticketmaster.

Simon is also continuing work on his long-gestating new solo album with producer Brian Eno, but no release date has been announced for the project.

N.Y. Hands Garfunkel Another Pot Charge

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. - Singer Art Garfunkel, who pleaded guilty last year to pot possession in upstate New York, was charged again Sunday after a marijuana cigarette was allegedly found in the ashtray of his car, state police said.

The 63-year-old Garfunkel, who lives in Manhattan, was charged after being pulled over for failing to stop his vehicle at a stop sign, The Daily Freeman of Kingston reported Tuesday.

Upon approaching Garfunkel's car, a trooper noticed a strong odor of marijuana and a subsequent search turned up a joint in the ashtray, the newspaper reported. He was issued a ticket and is due back in Woodstock Town Court on Sept. 22.

In January 2004, Garfunkel was charged with marijuana possession after state police stopped his limousine for speeding in the Ulster County town of Hurley, which is near Woodstock some 55 miles southwest of Albany. During that stop, police found a small amount of pot in Garfunkel's jacket.

The next month, he pleaded guilty and paid $200 in fines.

Garfunkel, who with Paul Simon made up the legendary duo Simon and Garfunkel, produced a string of hits in the 1960s, including "The Sound of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson," "Old Friends" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)."
