John Lennon, Stamp Collector
By Will Batchelor, PA

A stamp collection compiled by music legend John Lennon went on sale today.

The Beatles star – more famous for sex, drugs and rock’n’roll than philately – collected the stamps as a young schoolboy in Liverpool.

The collection, held in its original hardback Mercury Stamp Album, features 565 stamps from countries including Australia, India, USA, Germany and Italy.

The young Lennon had kept a running tally of the number of stamps, which fluctuated between 500 and 800.

He wrote his name and address in the flysheet and signed his name in blue ballpoint pen. Practice signatures, in pencil, are also visible.

The album, acquired from a US collector, is on sale for £29,950 by London-based stamp and autograph traders Stanley Gibbons.

Director Richard Purkis said: “For a schoolboy collection, it is quite impressive and for a John Lennon fan, it is a wonderful piece of memorabilia.

“Stamp-collecting does have a somewhat swotty image, but this goes to show that it appeals to a broad spectrum of different types of people.

“An interest in stamps demonstrates an interest in different countries, cultures and art, so perhaps we should not be surprised that it appealed to a creative person like John Lennon.”

The album is on display at Fraser’s Autograph Gallery in London.

Other famous philatelists include flamboyant Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Stanley Gibbons Says It Bought Beatle John Lennon's Stamp Album

May 13 (Bloomberg) -- Stanley Gibbons Group Ltd., a 149-year- old U.K. autograph and postage-stamp dealer, said it bought former Beatle John Lennon's stamp collection.

The ``Mercury Stamp Album,'' which dates from about 1950, when Lennon was 10 years old, is inscribed with his name and address and features three practice signatures, the London-based company said in a Regulatory News Service statement.

Stanley Gibbons didn't say whether it plans to sell the album, or how much it cost.

LENNON, JOHN
A fantastic and unique item of personal memorabilia owned by John Lennon. A hard-cover, green 'Mercury' stamp album (approx 6.5x8.5 in). Lennon has hand-written his name and address across one of the opening cover pages in blue ball-point pen ink "John Lennon, 251 Menlove Avenue, Woolton, Liverpool", and signed further down the page "John Lennon". At the top left corner of the same page are three practice signatures in pencil, with "Lennon" written twice as it appears he is trying to work out the formation of his signature. The page also features a couple of small notations in Lennon's hand. The album contains over 145 pages and displays various incomplete collections of stamps from countries including Great Britain, India, Canada, Australia and Japan. The first free end page also bears a light inscription from Lennon's cousin Stanley Parks. In very good condition, with scattered light toning and soiling to the signed page, worn but intact front cover spine and expected age and handling wear from a stamp collector. A wonderful item; sold together with a black and white reproduction photograph of Lennon in his childhood years.
£29,950.00

Hard Day's Nite, Beatles mini-museum on eBay

Dorothy Schultz said she and the other owners of the Hard Day's Nite Bed and Breakfast and Beatles mini-museum are tired and want to retire, so the world renowned operation has been placed on eBay.

"The bed and breakfast, the museum and its contents, and the adjoining property went on eBay yesterday," Schultz said Thursday. "The site reaches an international market. People from all over the world know about the success of the Beatles, and many have visited here as a result.

"In fact, Japan has the largest Beatles fan club in the world," Schultz said. "From the very beginning, this place has been famous. It is an unusual piece of merchandise. We have owned it for 10 years, and it has been full practically every day since we opened."

Schultz said she and her husband, Cornelius, and Daryl and Jim Shady own the properties.

"We have calls from everywhere and are always full," Schultz said. "We have wedding parties who rent the entire house and have had many compliments. We do everything from cleaning the rooms to making sure we have food available for our guests. Everyone compliments us on the cleanliness of the place."

Schultz said the property houses the largest collection of Beatles memorabilia in the Untied States.

"From the very beginning, 10 years ago when we opened, the story was picked up by The Associated Press and we have been busy ever since," Schultz said. "We don't even have to advertise. We have many repeat visitors, many who do not speak English. But they all know about the Beatles, and their smiles say it all."

The Hard Day's Nite Bed and Breakfast was home to Louise Harrison, sister of Beatles member George Harrison, who vacationed there during September 1963.

Located at 113 McCann St., behind Benton Consolidated High School, the 1,900-square foot structure was constructed in 1930.

When Harrison visited his sister, Louise, the then-unknown British musician was destined for greatness. The following February, the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, and the rest is history.

The house, built by descendants of explorer Merriweather Lewis, was purchased by the State of Illinois in 1994, and was scheduled for demolition to be turned into a parking lot.

A group of local residents became concerned that the history would be lost forever and, at the last moment, purchased the property. Restored to resemble the 1963 décor, the B and B opened for business in 1996.

In 2013, the property will qualify to become part of the national history landmarks registry, adding to its appeal.

The museum houses the famous turntable from the West Frankfort WFRX radio station, which played the first Beatles record heard in America, hand-delivered by George Harrison to the radio station.

The couch from Louise Harrison's New York apartment is part of the museum, and is where George Harrison slept when he visited his sister.

The B & B is comprised of four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room with fireplace, dining room, kitchen, den, and a full basement is handicapped accessible from the 20-foot by 20-foot rear deck.

"One of the requirements of operating a bed and breakfast is the owner must either live in the building or nearby," Schultz said.

"Fortunately I live across the street, but the new owner would be able to live in the adjoining property."

The adjoining property is a brick home, currently used as a rental property, complete with five rooms, and a full basement. Schultz said the residence could be developed into an expanded museum and gift shop.

Schultz said that David McCollum, of McCollum Real Estate, is handling the sale.

NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Effective immediately, ItsOnlyRocknRoll.com will auction more than 800 lots of Beatles, rock and roll, music and entertainment memorabilia. The auction ends on June 28th.

The rock and roll event will feature one of the most amazing Bruce Springsteen collections ever assembled boasting items from all seven of his bands dating back to his earliest days of performing. Included are handwritten lyrics and set lists, contracts, rare handbills, posters and even a signed high school yearbook, plus the guitar that is featured in the 'Tunnel of Love" program book.

The ever popular Beatles are a main stay in each auction and for this auction, ItsOnlyRockNRoll.com is auctioning their most unusual Beatles artifact to date - the actual front door to the Beatles Apple Records lawyer, Nat Weiss' office which was signed and anointed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Carly Simon Taylor, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and other notables. John's amazing signature is 12.5" x 2.5" and is by far the largest one known to exist! The bidding starts at $15,000 and it is estimated that it will fetch well over $75,000. There are many other handwritten and signed Beatles items featured including a signed poster, program, photo and more.

Other notable Beatles items include a rare historical receipt signed by the 5 original Beatles: John, Paul, George, their original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe, and their original drummer, Pete Best. Another amazing piece of Beatle history is the original master tape for the Beatles first concert which was only shown as a "closed circuit broadcast" from Washington D.C.. This is the ONLY known complete and original print.

The publicity surrounding ItsOnlyRocknRoll.com's previous sale of a poster for The Beatles 1966 concert at Shea Stadium for a world record $132,000 brought out another previously unknown copy that will be offered this time in addition to another fine example of the poster for The Beatles Cleveland appearance in 1966. In addition there are other concert posters, handbills, tickets and memorabilia from the beginning of their careers right up to their final concert performances in 1966.

One of the rare Beatle records offered is the original withdrawn cover version of the LP Yesterday and Today known as the "butcher" cover, sealed with a letter from the original promo man Allen Livingston, valued at over $20,000.

Other rock notables include KISS members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss' original and complete stage costumes, along with Elvis Presley, Duran Duran and Michael Jackson outfits.

An exceptional item, worthy of being in the Smithsonian is Woody Guthrie personal copy of Bartlett's Quotations in which he has added over 500 personal entries, many of them signed, with revealing and important notes in his own hand. An original road case stenciled and used by The Doors became Jim Morrison's favorite seat to smoke pot on!

Continuing with the astounding array of rare concert posters that fans and collectors have come to expect from ItsOnlyRocknRoll.com are posters including the 1st European Jazz Festival in 1949 with jazz great Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt, and others plus many other important early jazz pieces. There's also supremely rare posters from The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Who, Cream/Eric Clapton, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, The Acid Test, and all the other big names.

Entertainment items will include original Frank Sinatra awards, Marilyn Monroe documents, a Golden Globe award, and even a Tonight Show Emmy award. More info at http://www.itsonlyrocknroll.com -- info@itsonlyrocknroll.com .

Museum Acquires Lennon's Stamp Album Fri Jun 24

WASHINGTON - Beatles star John Lennon collected stamps as a schoolboy — and the public will soon have a chance to see them. The Smithsonian's National Postal Museum announced Friday it has acquired Lennon's stamp album and plans to display it in October.

The museum purchased the album from a British stamp dealer but declined to disclose the purchase price.

The museum said the album contains more than 550 stamps from around the world, including many from former British colonies such as India and New Zealand.

The collection did not focus on stamps featuring music, but it may have indicated some artistic interest on Lennon's part. The album's title page had images of British monarchs, to which beards and mustaches had been added in blue ink.

"We're tremendously excited at the prospect of exhibiting John Lennon's boyhood stamp album," curator of philately Wilson Hulme said. "I hope it will inspire new collectors. There are people who think stamp collecting isn't cool, and maybe this will cause them to think twice about that. It just doesn't get cooler than John Lennon."

The stamp album, printed in about 1950, was given to Lennon by his cousin Stanley Parkes.

JOHN LENNON AUCTION COLLECTION UP FOR GRABS

JOHN LENNON’s military tunic and an oil painting from the legend’s student days are to be auctioned in a collection estimated to be worth $2 million.

Going under the hammer on July 28 at London’s Hippodrome will be items charting the Beatle’s life, from his time at college to the sofa he sat on for his final publicity photograph.

Included in the auction will be the original ’All You Need Is Love’ manuscript, the tunic which is believed to have inspired the costumes on the ’Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album cover, a never-before-heard recording of Lennon and Yoko Ono’s children singing ’All You Need Is Love’ and the singer’s electric piano – a gift from Elton John - taken from his Dakota Building apartment.

“Every item speaks for itself in terms of rarity, importance and cultural significance’, said Ted Owen, director of auction house Cooper Owen. “Without Lennon and The Beatles, I have no doubt that the music industry would look very different today.”

He added: “Together, the items in this sale combine all of the best elements of the man himself – it is iconic, idealistic and irreverent. We’re honoured to be passing them on – and the sale itself will celebrate Lennon and his legacy the way it was meant to be celebrated!”

The key lots are:

- Handwritten ’All You Need Is Love’ manuscript from the ’Our World’ broadcast in 1967 - The Beatles last live TV performance.
- Bedspread from Lennon and Ono’s Montreal ‘bed-in’, 1969
- Previously unheard recordings of Lennon and Ono’s children singing ’All You Need Is Love’
- A rare oil painting by Lennon created whilst a student in Liverpool
- Table from the Weybridge home Lennon shared with his first wife Cynthia
- Chair Lennon sat on for the cover of the The Beatles first US album ’Introducing The Beatles’ and some of the band’s first publicity photos
Vox organ played by Lennon at The Beatles’ Shea Stadium gig, 1965
- Clothing, including the military tunic, worn in Life magazine photo shoot
- Original Tom Mix standee from the cover of ’Sgt Pepper’ - one of only a handful remaining props from the shoot
- Lennon’s electric piano from his Dakota Building apartment – a gift from Elton John - and a sofa from Lennon and Ono’s ’Special Room’ in the Hit Factory recording studio used during the recording of his final albums ’Double Fantasy’ and ’Milk & Honey’

LENNON JACKET TO RAISE A FORTUNE

JOHN LENNON's tunic - thought to have inspired the SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND album cover - is set to raise over $180,000 (GBP100,000) at auction this week (begs25JUL05) in London.

The military style jacket, first worn by the late BEATLE in a photoshoot for Life magazine in 1966, was thrown out by the IMAGINE star and his wife YOKO ONO when they were clearing out their New York home in 1977, and given with a stash of similar treasures to the Salvation Army charity.

Salvation Army volunteer JOEL MORRIS snapped up the legendary garment for a mere $17 (GBP10), before auctioning it as part of a small collection of Lennon memorabilia in 1983 for a modest $170 (GBP100).

JOHN COLLINS, manager of auctioneers CooperOwen, says, "It's rare for something like this to come up.

"Most of John's stuff, Yoko's got. PAUL MCCARTNEY kept all of his stuff.

"The only reason why some of John's stuff is out there is because he was very generous and gave things away."

The upcoming auction (29JUL05) is expected to raise $2 million (GBP1 million) altogether from the sale of Lennon gems - which includes a handwritten ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE manuscript and a bedspread from his notorious "bed-in" for peace.

Macca's letter to fan sells for £700 Jul 27 2005

A hand-written get well note sent to a Shropshire woman by former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, was sold for £700 at auction.

The letter was sent to a 12-year-old girl called Rosemary, who was ill in hospital in the 1964, after the pop legend met her father outside the group's hotel in Paris.

But when the woman, now aged 54 who wishes to remain anonymous, took the note to school to show her friends, an unimpressed teacher tore it up and tossed it into a bin.

The big-hearted star heard how Rosemary, who still lives in Shrewsbury, was being treated for curvature of the spine at Woodlands Hospital, in Birmingham.

However her classmates managed to retrieve the pieces and stick the keepsake back together.

At the time Beatlemania was at its peak, but Sir Paul still found time to write to the unwell fan.

The note read: "Dear Rosemary, I met your uncle outside our hotel in Paris, he asked me if I would write.

"I forgot, however, being a bit soft - and I am now writing this from London, hope you get better soon. Lots of love Paul McCartney xxx."

Last week it went under the hammer at Halls Fine Art in Shrewsbury, where three memorabilia collectors bid furiously for the prized McCartney signature.

The note had a reserve price of £400 to £600, and was sold to an unnamed collector from the north of England.

A spokesman for the auction house said: "What made this lot special was the fact that he took time out to write the letter, and is also quite valuable because of the time it was written."

Lennon memorabilia up for auction

A collection of John Lennon memorabilia worth an estimated $2m (£1.1m) is to be auctioned in London on Thursday.

The memorabilia, which has taken more than 25 years to assemble, spans the Beatle's life from his art school days in Liverpool to his final solo album.

Lots include the tunic that inspired the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover and a handwritten manuscript of All You Need Is Love.

The auction will take place at the Hippodrome in central London.

The military band tunic, worn by John Lennon for a Life magazine photo shoot in 1966, is predicted to sell for £30,000.

Meanwhile, the manuscript - retrieved from the stage floor directly after the Beatles' final live TV performance in 1967 - is expected to fetch £500,000.

'Irreverent'

"The items in this sale combine all the best elements of the man himself," said Ted Owen, director of auctioneers Cooper Owen.

"It is iconic, idealistic and irreverent."

Other items up for grabs in the sale include a pair of Lennon's distinctive round spectacles, an original art school painting and the Ivor Novello award he won in 1964 for She Loves You.

Lennon's fellow Beatles are also represented, with George Harrison's 12-string guitar and a Rupert the Bear book that used to belong to Sir Paul McCartney among the other lots.

However, the Beatles are not the only music legends whose former property will go under the hammer.

The auction will also feature a Sex Pistols drum kit, a rare left-handed Jimi Hendrix guitar and a handwritten Bob Dylan set list.
