Macca Re-Records Let It Be For Charity

Sir Paul McCartney has re-recorded his performance of "Let It Be" for a special Live Aid DVD. The veteran rocker's original performance was supposed to have marked the climax of the 1985 event. But due to a technical hitch on the day his microphone went dead.

Macca wants to be a part of Sir Bob Geldof's DVD - so he went back to the studio to get it right.

The DVD will be the first release from the 1985 Live Aid concert - which raised around £40million ($73 million) for food and development in Africa. It is expected to be in the stores by Christmas.

INXS To Be Included On Live Aid DVD

The tracklisting for the Live Aid DVD will include the bonus footage from Australia featuring INXS and Holland featuring BB King.

Although the event was held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia, there were crosses via satellite to various countries including Sydney, Australia where INXS performed 'Don't Change' and 'What You Need' for the global audience.

The historic Live Aid event took place on July 13, 1985. It was put together by Bob Geldof to raise money for the starving in Africa. He later earned a knighthood for his work.

The complete concert (minus a performance by Led Zeppelin who refused to allow their footage to be used on this charity DVD) will be released by Warner Vision on November 8.

The complete tracklisting (with just a Run-DMC track still to be cleared is:

How Live Aid was saved for historyHow Live Aid was saved for history
BBC News Online

Live Aid, the legendary 1985 charity concert featuring stars from Paul McCartney and Queen to U2 and Madonna, is being released on DVD for the first time.

It was one of the defining events of the 1980s, with an unequalled musical line-up contributing to one of the most memorable TV broadcasts ever made.

But Live Aid's transatlantic 16-hour show was almost not recorded at all.

When organiser Bob Geldof was persuading artists to take part, he promised it would be a one-off, never to be seen again.

That way, he said, they did not have to worry about contracts or embarrassment if they messed up amid the chaos of the day.

If Geldof's plan had been followed, Live Aid would have remained a fond but fading memory.

But BBC Radio 1 concert co-ordinator Jeff Griffin realised history was about to be made - so recorded it anyway.

Mr Griffin confronted Geldof at a meeting a month before the event. "I collared him for about 30 seconds afterwards and just looked him in the face," Mr Griffin tells BBC News Online.

"I said 'Bob I hear what you're saying, but I have to disagree with you - I just think it would be irresponsible not to record it because this has all the makings of something very, very special'."

Geldof secretly acknowledged "it was silly not to do it", Mr Griffin says: "So he left it up to me."

Although video of the BBC One broadcast with high-quality multi-track audio was kept, many performances from the US were not shown in the UK and so were still missing.

The concert was split between Wembley Stadium, London, and JFK Stadium, Philadelphia - and US broadcaster ABC took Geldof more seriously and made its tapes unusable.

The DVD's producer Jill Sinclair says: "That was what was so heartbreaking because I had no idea that they would be so stupid.

"Not that they thought they were being stupid, they just thought they were following instructions."

Another set of tapes had been given to the Smithsonian Institute - but were lost or stolen.

Eventually, more than 100 Live Aid tapes were tracked down in MTV's archives - albeit with songs cut short by ad breaks and presenters.

Ms Sinclair has not put incomplete songs on the DVD, but the four-disc set, to be released in the UK on 8 November, still clocks in at 10 hours.

Every person who appeared on stage - from backing singers to big stars - has been contacted to get their permission to be on the discs.

The vast majority of artists agreed, saying: "We were there on the day, we wanted to support the cause, we still want to support the cause," Ms Sinclair says.

"We may have been wearing some ridiculous fluorescent yellow shirt or some ludicrous mullet hairstyle - but it's a piece of history and we were part of it."

The only artists to refuse were Led Zeppelin because they said they put in a "sub-standard" performance.

"I did feel cross because I felt like they were letting me down as a fan of Led Zeppelin, I felt they were cheating me," Ms Sinclair says.

"But actually now I'm happy," she says, because Robert Plant and Jimmy Page are giving all royalties from their own forthcoming DVD to Band Aid.

"I could never have imagined they would have come back with something as generous as this," she says.

Technical glitches on the day came when Sir Paul McCartney and Freddie Mercury sang on although their microphones were not working.

Sir Paul re-recorded Let It Be a few days later, while Mercury's vocals have been recovered from other microphones that were working - so both performances are on disc.

'Can't be done'

"[Mercury] didn't know it wasn't being recorded, so he thought he was giving the performance of his life and it seems very hard to not include him," Ms Sinclair says.

As well as the sound improvements, dodgy camera shots have been replaced and the DVD has been finished in record time.

When Ms Sinclair took on the project in May, she says she was "completely on the verge of passing out" when told how soon organisers wanted it.

"They said they wanted it for Christmas and I thought I'm not sure if I can do it for Christmas - and I thought Christmas was in December," she says.

"And then the distributor said 'when we say Christmas, we mean October'. And I felt myself going a bit faint and said 'I don't think it can be done'."

So it has been an "extraordinary achievement", she says - but that has been down to the fact it was Live Aid. "Everybody just pulled out all the stops."

In 1984, when Band Aid's Do You Know It's Christmas? single came out, almost everybody gave their services for free.

This time, artists are still not being paid but DVD company Warner and retailers will take a cut of the £39.99 price. Warner paid a large lump sum to the charity for rights to release the DVD, and will pay more as sales go up.

The DVD is expected to be the must-have gift for every music fan this Christmas - even those who cannot remember the show.

"It seems to me that even very young kids know about it," Ms Sinclair says.

"It's become one of those things a bit like the Second World War - you don't have to have lived through it to know it happened."

Band Aid star returns to AfricaBand Aid star returns to Africa

Rock star Midge Ure has returned to Ethiopia 20 years after co-writing charity record Do They Know It's Christmas, with Sir Bob Geldof.

The 1984 record spawned Live Aid and launched a famine relief operation that saved up to two million lives.

Ure was dismayed to find millions still live under the shadow of famine when he returned with the Save the Children charity last month.

But he added it was good to see there was "hope" in the country.

The former Ultravox frontman was so appalled by the scenes of suffering he witnessed during a visit to Ethiopia in March 1985 he vowed he would never go back.

But he embarked on a three day tour of Ethiopia's northern highlands to see how Save the Children has introduced new farming programmes.

He said: "When I came here last time I remember seeing people stuck in what looked like a concentration camp and it had been a good day because only three children had died.

"I said I never would, but I'm glad I came back. Back then, there was a sea of dying people here but today that's gone and I see hope."

Malnourished

Ure visited the plains of Korem, former site of the aid camp where 170,000 famine refugees gathered in 1984, to find a thriving farming community and township.

But he added it was unacceptable that at least five million people in Ethiopia every year need food.

Half of all Ethiopian children are malnourished and the government cannot afford healthcare or education for most of population.

Last year, 14 million people would have starved without relief - almost twice the number who needed food in the famine 20 years ago - after the country was hit by drought.

Aid policy

Ure added: "Band Aid was an analogy. A band aid will heal or cover a cut but it won't fix a severed arm and Ethiopia's got two severed arms."

Simon Mechale, commissioner of Ethiopia's Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Commission (DPPC), said: "We are fed up with receiving aid. But we are in the process of climbing a ladder and we need a hand to reach the top."

Save the Children has urged Prime Minister Tony Blair to change Britain's aid policy.

The charity's Paul Hetherington said: "Time is running out for the children of Ethiopia.

"Half the money raised by Band/Live Aid went on development, not emergency aid. That pattern has yet to be followed - now would be a good time to start."

1985 Live Aid Concert Out on DVD 1985 Live Aid Concert Out on DVD

LONDON - After almost two decades of refusing to rebroadcast the Live Aid famine-relief concert, organizer Bob Geldof said he changed his mind because of the large number of bootleg recordings available.
"I couldn't believe the number of bootleg copies being sold — they are quite literally taking food from the hungry. This has to be stopped," said Geldof, who attended a launch party Sunday for the 10-hour, four-disc DVD set.
"I promised all the people on `Live Aid' that a recording would never come out, but when I rang them all about this, everyone said OK," he said.
The mammoth concert, staged in London and Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, featured performances by David Bowie, Queen, U2, Elton John, Eric Clapton and dozens of others. Viewed on television by some 1.5 billion people, it raised $140 million for the victims of Ethiopia's famine.
Later this year, Geldof and co-organizer Midge Ure plan to release a new version of the 1984 Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" featuring acts including Travis and Coldplay.
The British government announced Sunday it would refund sales tax collected on the DVD and single, a move it estimated would generate an extra $7.4 million for charity.
"That's a serious wedge, and shows a political climate change," said Geldof.
"I had this big fight with Madame X, Mrs. Thatcher, 20 years ago, and now the government understands politically it's not worth it to go up against it."
The "Live Aid" DVD was released Monday in Britain.
