Пол отдавал указание не "парням", а Тони Барроу, который не "снимал", а всего лишь записывал на партативный магнитофон последний концерт Битлз.

The Shea Stadium segment is from the soundtrack of the television special and is very good mono. The Candlestick Park tape is, of course, from Tony Barrow's recording of The Beatles' last concert of 1966. Barrow's tape ran out before the end of Long Tall Sally. And after Sally The Beatles started to play In My Life but they must have thought better of it and left the stage leaving only memories behind. This Spank release (by way of Vigotone) has nice packaging. The CD is housed in a color slipcase and comes with a 48-page booklet with photos and liner notes borrowed from Tony Barrow and Mark Lewisohn. For the very best sound quality versions of these two concerts, search out Japan's Masterdisc "Original Master Recordings" of CANDLESTICK PARK (MDCD-007) and THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW on Beat (BEAT CD 011-2).

The spirit of '66

It was 40 years ago - well, last month -- that the Beatles last played a concert in Toronto. Actually, they played two shows on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1966 at Maple Leaf Gardens -- at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Moptops' last performances here, a convention called the Toronto Beatles Celebration takes place next weekend at the CNE. (See accompanying list of presenters and events). Toronto was the ninth-last stop on the Beatles' last-ever tour. And by August 1966, four years into Beatlemania, all four of the Fab Four had absolutely had it with the road. "The road was getting pretty boring," drummer Ringo Starr recalled in the book The Beatles Anthology. "On the last tour, the most exciting thing was meeting people who came to the shows, not the shows themselves. We'd played the stadiums, we'd played to the big crowds, and still we were only doing our 30-minute show!" Thirty minutes?! Thanks for coming out, folks. But believe it or not, 30 minutes would have been a marathon performance on this tour. "The Beatles were famous for doing 15-minute shows; we could speed it up to 15 minutes," John Lennon recalled. "Fifty-thousand people, and we'd be off. That was our record. We got our kicks from seeing how fast we could do the whole show."

Geesh, don't strain yourselves, lads. The Gardens shows occurred just weeks after Lennon's infamous "bigger than Jesus" comments, which outraged Christians around the world. Many North American radio stations refused to air their songs anymore, there were Beatles record-burning protest parties, and even death threats against the group. The Beatles held a news conference at the Gardens' Hot Stove Lounge between shows, and they were ready for all the questions about Lennon's comments.

"There's so much right about Christianity," Lennon said. "We recommend the basic Christian ideas for anybody -- young people and old people."

Added McCartney: "Especially old people."

Harrison could barely hide his disdain for the furor: "So many people don't keep up with what they're supposed to believe in -- like love thy neighbour. All those people who set about disliking us, that's not really a Christian answer to whatever Lennon said."

All four Beatles also denounced the Vietnam War, which by summer 1966 was already an ethical and political quagmire. In reference to the war, Harrison couldn't resist a shot at the pro-war Bible-belters: "There's this 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' and it means that. But a lot of people are amending section A and going ahead and killing. It's up to them to sort out."

Then the Beatles, always ahead of their time socially as well as musically, offered a hint of what was to become the rage the following summer. When asked what was the most important thing in life, Harrison had a one-word answer.

"Love."

Book Review:: The Beatles last concert in pictures
Now back in print after 15 years, "Tomorrow Never Knows: The Beatles Last Concert" is the definitive account of the Beatles concert in San Francisco on August 29, 1966. Written by Eric Lefcowitz, it features 60 of Jim Marshall's celebrated photographs including images of the Beatles backstage and performing onstage for the last time.

In 1986, Eric Lefcowitz approached Jim Marshall about putting together a book based on his photographs of the Beatles' last concert on August 29, 1966.

This was the last public concert the Beatles ever gave in front of a paying audience and Marshall had full backstage and onstage access to shoot, the kind of access that is rarely given to photographers anymore. He made the most of his time with the group.

It was the "last hard day's night" as Marshall put it. What he documented on 8/29/66 was the culmination of a joy-producing, life-affirming, groundbreaking musical movement known as Beatlemania.



Sixty of Marshall's images appear in "Tomorrow Never Knows", images that testify to his genius for capturing spontaneous moments and candid nuances. Thumbing through the proof sheets of that historic night, you see the four Beatles relaxing, smiling, posing for photographs and finally performing. Together they provide a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Fab Four.

To round off his research for the book, Mr. Lefcowitz also conducted interviews with Joan Baez and her sister Mimi Fariсa, who were invited guests, Vern Miller who played in the warm up band the Remains, soundman Mort Feld and several other witnesses to the event. He also received permission to republish several fascinating articles by noted journalist Ralph J. Gleason.

Mr. Lefcowitz says, "I am pleased that these beautiful images are back in print. Like the Beatles, the artistry of Jim Marshall's photography never goes out of style."

FOOTAGE OF THE BEATLES' FINAL CONCERT EMERGES

Unseen footage of THE BEATLES' final official concert is to be shown on British television later this month (NOV06), and will reveal that the band's tours where less than professionally handled. Recordings made by BARRY HOOD at the gig in San Francisco's Candlestick Park on 29 August 1966 show GEORGE HARRISON, SIR PAUL McCARTNEY, JOHN LENNON and RINGO STARR taking the stage for the last time, and a row breaking out between the venue's ground staff. He says, "I filmed the stage being prepared and the fans queuing to get in. "There was a row between the equipment manager and the field manager who was frightened that the equipment van was going to ruin the baseball pitch." A spokesperson from the BBC adds, "This is the first time it has been shown. "It shows how The Beatles' tours were quite amateurish and chaotic."
