In an interview in the Times on Saturday Clapton talks Cream:

"No, not for me. We did it and it was fun.But life is too short, I've got a lot of other things I would rather do including staying at home with my kids." The thing about that band he says, was that it was all to do with its limits. "Here were three people who were essentially in disagreement with each other. You latched on to those rare moments of cohesion and made the most of them. But tthey were rare. It was an experiment."

ALLMANS DRUMMER THINKS GUITARIST NEPHEW WILL BE GOOD FOR ERIC CLAPTON

Drummer Butch Trucks won't be the least bit surprised if the teaming of Eric Clapton and Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks works out well. Butch is very familiar with Derek, being both his uncle and his bandmate in the Allmans, and he said Derek has been working magic with the Allmans for some time now. Butch told the Associated Press, "To be honest with you, he's the one who keeps raising the bar for us. Now it's everything we can do to keep up with him. Derek has a sense of musicality that I've never experienced with anyone else because he takes a solo and works it and builds it and rips your damn heart out. Every time, he does it differently. You never know what he's going to do next. He's a raving little genius."

Clapton's European tour begins May 5th in France, and he expected to hit North America late this year or early next year. It's unknown whether Trucks will be on those dates, considering his obligations to the Allman Brothers and his own Derek Trucks Band.

The summer schedule for the Allman Brothers begins June 16th in Cincinnati. That first leg happens during a break in Clapton's tour, and Trucks should be back with the band.

You mean, like the song?
Some lyrically named Vermonters just can't stanza it anymore
April 23, 2006

By PATRICK TIMOTHY MULLIKIN

So, just what is it about Leila Cosgrove, 22, of Burlington, and Cecilia Talamantes, 40, of Medford, Mass., that would make a man get down, begging, on his knees?

First, follow the bouncing ball back to the year 1970 when Eric Clapton, masquerading as "Derek" of Derek and The Dominos, wailed: "Layla, you've got me on my knees. Layla, I'm begging darling, please," and Simon and Garfunkel harmonized: "Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees; I'm begging you please to come home."

Then look to the parents, who innocently, coincidentally, consciously, subconsciously, accidentally, deliberately or otherwise chose a name that would cause complete strangers to burst into song.

Talamantes, who does financial work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says she was named after St. Cecilia and was born some four years before "Cecilia" hit the airwaves. It was pure chance that forever linked her name to the song.

Cosgrove, whose employer contracts with the state of Vermont on Medicaid issues, suspects she was named after the song "Layla." "My parents claim that they did not name me after the Clapton song, but they are fans, so I think they may be lying a little. My mother chose the spelling (Leila) because she was born in Hawaii."

The women share at least one thing. Their familiar names strike a chord: It's bad renditions of "Layla" for Leila and equally bad renditions of "Cecilia" for Cecilia. Over and over and over

And these two are not alone in the world.

Parents have been naming newborns after popular songs since songs began bearing popular names. Stephen Foster no doubt spawned armies of "Jeanies" (with the light brown hair) in the 1800s and in the 1920s Al Jolson may have been responsible for christening a cadre of "Toot Toot Tootsies."

Today it's baby boom parents primarily who are responsible for those Barbara Annes (Beach Boys, 1966), Brandys (Looking Glass,1972) Carrie Annes (The Hollies, 1967), Cassidys (Grateful Dead, 1974), Cecilias (Simon and Garfunkel, 1970), Julias (The Beatles, 1969), Laylas (Derek & The Dominoes, 1970), Peggy Sues (Buddy Holly, 1957) and Scotties (Bobby Goldsboro, 1971) who must deal daily with the quizzical looks, knowing smiles and sonic outbursts.

CLAPTON: 'I TRIED TO SAVE BEST'

Rocker ERIC CLAPTON was devastated by the death of soccer star GEORGE BEST last year (25NOV05), as he had desperately attempted to save him from the alcoholism that claimed his life. The TEARS IN HEAVEN rocker, who is himself a reformed alcoholic, visited his friend at a rehabilitation clinic and wrote to him during his final days in London's Cromwell hospital, but admits the former Northern Ireland player repeatedly faced down his arguments for sobriety. He recalls, "He was in a health farm down in the country, and I was sent over to talk to him. I made a real sloppy attempt at persuading him to stop drinking. On my own which was ridiculously wrong. He ran rings around me. "He made me feel like I was the one needing help! I told my story, and he was like, 'You poor bugger.' I thought, this is going wrong. He was very clever, and he got some mileage out of staying where he was." However, Clapton accepts Best lived his life to the full and achieved his dream of playing a major role in sporting history: "Look at George's funeral. It's like he knew that if he died this way he would go down in history as being one of the great Irish heroes of all time. "That was more important to him than just being alive and having a good life."

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Rockabilly hellraiser Jerry Lee Lewis will release his first album in 11 years next September through Columbia Records.

"Redemption," a star-studded effort featuring the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Jimmy Page, was originally set for a February 2005 release via DreamWorks Nashville, which has since closed down.

Although he still tours regularly, Lewis hasn't released a studio album since 1995's "Young Blood" (Sire), which failed to reach The Billboard 200. On Friday, he will perform "Great Balls of Fire" on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman."

Mercedes-Benz USA Donates $1 Million to EIF's National Arts and Music Education Initiative

MONTVALE, N.J., April 27 -- Eric Clapton has been named the new ambassador for the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Arts and Music Education Initiative (EIF's NAMEI), and they join with Mercedes-Benz USA in a charitable campaign. The campaign in support of EIF's NAMEI, called Mercedes-Benz Drive Your Future Performance Awards, was created to inspire students to pursue their dreams, while providing more access to music and arts education programs. This spring, the critically acclaimed musician will appear in a public service announcement in support of EIF's NAMEI and the campaign.

MBUSA will donate $1 million through the sales of 750 Premier Edition GL-Class models sold at select Mercedes-Benz dealerships across the country to benefit EIF's NAMEI, which funds exemplary arts and music programs for children and youth nationwide, including The Recording Academy's Grammy Camp(TM). EIF and The Recording Academy are partners in raising the profile of this cause.

The Entertainment Industry Foundation, the official charity of the entertainment industry, combines the power of the entertainment industry with corporate support to bring attention to important issues like arts and music education.

"I've been very blessed to have music be such an important part of my life," said Eric Clapton, EIF's Ambassador for the NAMEI program. "I'm pleased to help the Entertainment Industry Foundation bring focus to this important cause."

"We're very honored to have Eric Clapton join the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Mercedes Benz in this endeavor," said Paul Halata, president and CEO of MBUSA. "As one of the most celebrated artists of our lifetime, he represents that drive to achieve one's personal best, which is what Drive Your Future is all about. Through our collective commitment, we hope to encourage creativity in young people."

"Arts education is just as important as core subjects like math and science, and yet, funding for arts education programs is declining across the country," said Lisa Paulsen, EIF president and CEO. "We are so grateful for Mr. Clapton's participation because he helps put a spotlight on why it is important to reverse this trend. And thanks to generous corporations like Mercedes-Benz, we are providing more access to exceptional art and music programs to inspire our children."

Separately, Mercedes-Benz will provide a grant of $500,000 to fund Drive Your Future Performance Awards scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are the first generation in their families to attend college and who plan to pursue performing arts degrees. The DYF program will provide 50 high school seniors across the country with a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500 per year for four years). Scholarships will be made available to students pursuing degrees in music, theater, dance and film.

The new DYF Performance Awards scholarships are an extension of the Mercedes-Benz Drive Your Future scholarship program, established in 2004, which commits an average of $1 million in scholarships annually to first generation college-bound students who demonstrate financial need and exceptional achievement in the areas of academic performance, leadership and school and community activities. Drive Your Future scholarship recipients will be announced in May 2006. For more information visit http://www.mbusa.com/driveperformance.

MBUSA will make its donations through the sales of the bold Premier Edition Mercedes GL-Class, which is the new full-sized luxury sport utility vehicle with room for seven passengers. The GL measures 200 inches in length is 75.6 inches wide and 72.4 inches tall and is equipped with a 4.6-liter four-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine producing 335-horsepower, seven-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC full-time four-wheel drive.

Standard features for this edition range from stunning 20" wheels and dual chrome exhaust to an inviting interior adorned with Nappa leather seats and dual-screen dual source Rear Seat Entertainment System that is built into the front seat headrests. The Premier Edition GL's roomy interior features two third-row seats can be stowed electronically at the push of a button, either separately or together, to provide a totally flat cargo floor along with a stationary sunroof over the 3rd row seat. Interested customers may visit http://www.mbusa.com/driveperformance or their local Mercedes-Benz dealer for more information regarding the Premier Edition GL.

Entertainment Industry Foundation

As the philanthropic leader of the entertainment industry, the Entertainment Industry Foundation has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars -- and provided countless volunteer hours -- to support charitable initiatives addressing some of the most critical issues facing society today. The Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Arts and Music Education Initiative (NAMEI) receives widespread industry commitment to raise awareness about the need for arts education in schools and fund exemplary programs nationwide. Bobby Whitlock picks up past here in Music City

By PETER COOPERBy PETER COOPER
Staff Writer

This year, former Derek & The Dominos keyboard man, singer and songwriter Bobby Whitlock collaborated with former bandmate Eric Clapton for the first time in decades.

And the man who brought about the reunion? That'd be television's Dr. Phil.

"That day, my wife and I watched a program about Dr. Phil," said Whitlock, who moved to Nashville last June with CoCo Carmel. The pair married on Dec. 24. "Phil said we should all take a day where we don't expect anything of ourselves. I told (wife and musical collaborator) CoCo, 'I'm going to have myself a Dr. Phil day.' I sat down at the piano, and this song poured out like water pouring off of a rock."

The song was Dear Veronica, one that Whitlock and Clapton had worked on in May 1971, when the band broke up while recording what would have been a follow-up to the now-legendary Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album. At the time, Clapton wanted to write a song about Hollywood actress Veronica Lake. Clapton's heroin addiction and inter-band squabbling ended the Dominos' story before the song was completed.

"We toppled like dominos," Whitlock said. "But I have carried the seed of that song around all these years. When I sat down at the piano, the complete song came out. I sent it to Eric to get his approval, and he said, 'I'd forgotten about that song. Congratulations.' So I started out the year with a brand new Bobby Whitlock/Eric Clapton song."

Whitlock plans to sing that one tomorrow night at the Bluebird Cafe, when he and Carmel will perform Derek and the Dominos classics and newer compositions with a group of Nashville co-conspirators including Steve Allen, Roger Cook, Gary Nicholson and Chuck Jones.

Though best-known as a Domino, Whitlock's essential contributions to 20th- century popular music are not limited to his work on the Layla album. He also played on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album and (in an uncredited but historically documented role) on the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street. He was a member of Delaney & Bonnie's band and he played on major albums by Stephen Stills & Manassas, Buddy Guy and John Prine. Whitlock's songs have been recorded by Prine, Sheryl Crow, Michael Nesmith and two rarely connected Joneses: George and Tom.

Though he spent a few years in Nashville in the early 1980s, Whitlock's move back to town wasn't brought on by fond memories of the past here.

"The climate here in the early 1980s was like the Oak Ridge Boys, Crystal Gayle and people like that, and people didn't want to know about Bobby Whitlock and rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues. But right now, Nashville is like Los Angeles was in the 1970s. This town is all about music, period."

Carmel is a multi-instrumentalist, a producer and an engineer, and she and Whitlock have been working on a new album at home in what Whitlock calls "the smallest house in Belle Meade."

"My wife and I were brought together by nothing less than divine intervention," Whitlock said. "We've both been through a lot, and we've been writing and recording songs that are about our lives, both our prior lives and our current life together. It's the stuff of books and movies and great blues songs."

With that, Whitlock began singing, his dusty, soulful voice instantly recalling those wondrous albums by Derek and the Dominos and George Harrison.

"I never thought much about the role I played in the Dominos and on All Things Must Pass until one day I pulled all those records out, put them on and just let them play," he said, once the singing was done. "There's a thread of continuity that runs through all of that."

Whitlock's hands and voice are that thread, and it winds from Clapton to the Stones to Dr. Phil to Bluebird Cafe.

Eric Clapton has agreed to headline a controversial seven-hour concert supporting the Countryside Alliance in its fight to lift the ban on fox hunting in the UK.

The Tears In Heaven hitmaker, who is a keen game shooter, will join fellow rockers Bryan Ferry, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and Nick Mason, Roger Daltrey of The Who and Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford at the gig at Highclere Castle in Berkshire this summer.

Clapton's spokesperson confirmed last night, "Eric supports the Countryside Alliance. He doesn't hunt himself, but does enjoy rural pursuits such as fishing and shooting.

"He supports the Alliance's pursuit to scrap the ban on the basis that he doesn't agree with the state's interference with people's private pursuits."

The ban on fox hunting was imposed by the British government in February, and the concert is expected to face opposition from animal rights activists.

Black is back in fashion for store steered by Slowhand

By Martin Waller

CORDINGS of Piccadilly, the traditional gents’ outfitter rescued from collapse by the rock star Eric Clapton three years ago, is about to record its second year back in the black.
Clapton, known for his dapper style and one of the store’s most enthusiastic customers, bought a half-interest in 2003, along with the current managing director, Noll Uloth.

At the time the store, which was primarily known for outfitting the hunting, shooting and fishing fraternity, was losing about £200,000 a year.

Clapton admits that he had a “Remington moment” on hearing of its plight and decided to invest — a reference to Victor Kiam, the entrepreneur who in advertisements said that he liked the razors so much he bought the company.

“I had walked past Cordings for many years admiring the styles,” Clapton, Slowhand to many of his fans, recalled, “until eventually I went in and found that the cut of the jackets fitted me perfectly.”

Initiatives have included a women’s line, started because Clapton’s wife found it difficult to find decent things to wear in the country, and a website. The directors are now looking at the possibility of a franchise in Japan and a new London store. Cordings has been in Piccadilly since 1839.

Mr Uloth said: “There was a very wide but flat pyramid of stock. We’ve reduced that significantly and that has enabled us to have a better stock that does sell. We’re a more contemporary clothes shop that tends towards shooting rather than a hunting, shooting and fishing shop where you can buy other things as well.”

Clapton enjoys fishing and shooting. He is among the line-up of stars due to appear in an open-air concert at Highclere Castle, Newbury, on May 20 in support of the Countryside Alliance, which opposes the ban on foxhunting.
