Cream-Disraeli Gears (Eagle Rock)
Автор: SergeK   Дата: 09.04.06 04:26:57

When guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker united to form the trio Cream, they created an array of music decades ahead of its time. The blend of blues and jazz influences into an imaginative, meticulously executed and superbly crafted set of compositions is still amazing to hear today, and they were at their musical peak in 1967 when they made the album Disraeli Gears.

Now the 82-minute Cream-Disraeli Gears (Eagle Rock) has just been released on DVD, and provides the most complete and visually masterful statement on this historic release. Besides containing an extra half hour of footage that didn't appear on a previous television version, the set combines interviews, performance, and rare archival footage from all the participants, with an exclusive performance from Bruce on “We're Going Wrong,” that's among his finest. Besides discussing his role and inspirations, Clapton also soars on acoustic performances of “Sunshine Of Your Love” and “Outside Woman Blues.”

While not quite as deeply rooted in the blues as their previous works, Disraeli Gears still contained plenty of explosive and sophisticated arrangements and interplay among the team. But the DVD also clarifies and explains the role played by lyricist Pete Brown, artist/lyricist Martin Sharp, producer Felix Pappalardi and the great Tom Dowd, who engineered the setting. John Mayall, Manfred Mann and assorted other journalists, rock historians and music business types also weight in on the significance of the recording.

Though only 82 minutes, Disraeli Gears seems much longer due to the quality of the playing and the significance of the commentary. It's even more interesting in the wake of the Cream revival to now compare how they sounded in the '60s to their current music. But most importantly, Disraeli Gears sets the record straight regarding the origin and conception of the album, the recording sessions and the impact of others contributing to it.

About the DVD
Blind Faith’s debut gig was in front of a cool 100,000 people on a warm day in Hyde Park. Since 7th June 1969 when this concert took place, it has never been seen in its entirety. This is a unique opportunity to see the world’s first supergroup perform for the very first time.

The audience gathered in London’s central Hyde Park were filled with anticipation awaiting Blind Faith’s debut. The newly formed collective of four virtuoso musicians who individually were already rock royalty, were the talk of the town and expectations both within the band, and out amongst the counter–culture crowd, were high. Fusing the psychedelic blues of Eric Clapton and the soulful vocals and keyboards of Steve Winwood, with Rick Grech on bass and the phenomenal Ginger Baker on drums, they didn’t disappoint. The set may have lasted just 40 minutes long, but fans were treated to a selection of timeless classics including “Presence Of The Lord”, “Sleeping In The Ground”, and the Stones classic “Under My Thumb”.

Following Cream’s disbanding in early 1969, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker combined with Traffic’s Steve Winwood and Family’s Ric Grech to form Blind Faith.

The band recorded just one self titled album and performed at a huge open air concert in Hyde Park in June 1969 before embarking on live dates in Europe and then subsequently a lengthy American tour. Once the tour had finished Eric Clapton decided to embark on a solo career after initially joining with Delaney and Bonnie in the Friends aggregation.

Ginger, Steve and Ric would go on to work in Ginger Baker’s Airforce. In April 2006 Sanctuary Visual Entertainment release the DVD “Hyde Park 1969”, containing most of the concert Blind Faith performed on that balmy summer’s day in June 1969.

In March 2006 Jon Kirkman spoke to Ginger Baker at his home in South Africa about his thoughts on the DVD and his memories of Blind faith

Jon Kirkman Hello, how are you?

Ginger Baker OK.

JK If we could have a chat about the Blind Faith DVD that would be great.

GB About the DVD then.

JK The Blind Faith DVD is coming out shortly. First of all I have to say that it is a wonderful performance and I think that the film captures the actual essence of the band and the times incredibly well. Would you agree?

GB Yeah, it was very, very nostalgic when I saw it.

JK You read in all the books and the magazines published at the time that Blind Faith was one of the first ‘super groups’.

GB That’s a load of crap.

JK I suppose if you gather any excellent musicians together it is something for the press to hang something on. Does that sometimes work against musicians?

GB I think it worked against Blind Faith very much.

JK The band’s first big gig was Hyde Park, might it have been better to have gone in smaller?

GB No, I thought it was a brilliant idea at the time and I think it was an excellent gig. They didn’t get all of it on the film unfortunately, there was more.

JK Having said that, what they do capture is incredible, the cinematography, the sound is incredible as well for the time.

GB It’s not bad for 1969, you know I think.

JK’When I watched the film I was astounded by the size of the audience and the size of the stage and the equipment. You really did have to rely on your prowess as a musician and projection as an artist in those days didn’t you?

GB Well I suppose (laughs).

JK All the tracks off the album are played live. Was there not a temptation to play material from the previous bands you all had been in like Cream and maybe Traffic?

GB No, no.

JK A couple of songs crept in towards the end of the American tour didn’t they? I have heard a couple of bootlegs containing tracks that Cream had performed. Crossroads is one of them which is obviously a Robert Johnson song.

GBNo, I don’t remember that. That’s not a Cream song anyway.

JK No, but it was made popular by Cream with the rock audience.

GB I suppose so. I don’t remember much about the end of the tour actually.

JK One thing I noticed about the performance at Hyde Park was that you looked incredibly happy throughout the performance and yet Eric and Stevie looked like they were concentrating more.

GB Well Stevie looks very happy to me.

JK Eric looks like he’s got his mind on a lot of things. You are smiling throughout the whole gig virtually.

GB Yeah, I enjoyed it.

JK I know that you all knew each other but how did Ric Grech come to be in the line up?

GB Stevie suggested Ric.

JK Ric was with Family before that. They were a great band and of all the bass players you could have chosen he was probably the less well known member of the band. Obviously he doesn’t play any less well! How easy was it for you to gel with Ric as a bass player? A rhythm section is an important component in a band.

GB There were no problems at all.

JK In hindsight do you think that Blind Faith should have done more?

GBI think it is a great shame that it didn’t because on the album there are four tracks that are absolute classics that are in the show. In the Presence of the Lord is a fantastic song. Sea of Joy is another one.

JK One of my favourites has always been Had to Cry Today.

GB Yeah that is another really good one. Let’s think of another one that stood out.

JK Can’t find My Way Home?

GB Yeah, that’s another great song. Blind Faith had great songs as opposed to the band before (Cream), the material wasn’t that good, it was the musicianship. The material with Blind Faith was just fucking fantastic.

JK Would it have been preferable if you had taken a little more time and made another album?

GB I think the tour was probably a big mistake at the time. It was just management wanting to rush us out there. I think it was the wrong groups on the tour with the band for a start. I think it would have been a lot better with the band on its own.

JK Free supported you in America and I think they would have been quite good but Delaney and Bonnie were certainly a bit of a mismatch.

GB I was never very fond of them; Eric was.

JK Were you disappointed when Eric decided to go off with Delaney and Bonnie rather than continue with Blind Faith?

GB Well it started on the tour. He started hanging out with them and we hardly ever saw him. We only saw him on stage. It was really Stevie, Ric and me hanging out together and Eric was always with Delaney and Bonnie. I couldn’t understand it myself however after what had happened to Eric with that fucking John Landau article in the Rolling Stone. He wanted to be playing backing guitar I think, he didn’t want to be a solo guitar player after reading that article. It slated his ‘boring solos’ full of clichés.

JK They called him the master of the cliché which I think was wrong.
JK They called him the master of the cliché which I think was wrong.

GB It was an awful article.

JK I have read that article subsequently and it is like he had never listened to you guys play although ultimately it was just one of many opinions.

GB It is just some fucking guy trying to put down something. He used every little thing he could to pull it down you know. Will Cream’s music stand the test of time? The conclusion he made was no it wouldn’t.

JK Well you guys must have had the last laugh.

GB He has made a total prick of himself.

JK In the music business though opinions are ten a penny – everyone has got one.

GB He was a fucking idiot in my opinion (laughs).

JK Back to the blind Faith thing. There was you Ric and Stevie hanging out together and when Eric went off subsequently you basically moved into Ginger Baker’s Airforce. How long after Blind Faith did that come about

GB I got totally messed up drug–wise on the end of the tour. We finished the tour in Hawaii and I decided that I would stay over in Hawaii to get straight. I discovered that I was in the wrong place because Hawaii was awash with heroin at that time so I then went to Jamaica and I spent 10 days in Hawaii, five weeks in Jamaica and then got a boat going the wrong way coming home and went to Curacao and all sorts of other exotic places like the Azores. I basically went on a cruise and finally I got home over ten weeks after the tour had finished. I was completely out of touch with everybody while I was away obviously. I drove down to see Stevie and Stevie told me what had happened. It was a fait acomplit as they say. There was nothing we could do about it you know.

JK You must have been disappointed though because the promise that was shown with Blind Faith was incredible.

GB I was disappointed Blind Faith only made one record but what a fucking record!

JK Have you heard the deluxe edition that came out with some of the extra jams on?

GB Actually I don’t have a sound system.

JK You can tell that the band is very tight by listening to the jam sessions recorded at Olympic Studios. It is one of those what ifs but I do wish that Blind Faith had made a second album. It is a great shame.

GB It didn’t last long enough, it flared brightly and died young.

JK Do you think that sometimes helps with a project’s longevity?

GB Well I don’t know but I thought it was a wonderful band. I think that the album is just one of the most amazing albums of all time.

JK It is a highly rated album and you said quite correctly that with Cream the musicianship was highly regarded and rightly so, you weren’t called Cream for nothing but I think the song writing was certainly more realised on the Blind Faith album which was kind of unusual in those days.

GB No, no Eric is a brilliant writer, in Cream he did not get a chance I think it got very much forgotten, Blind Faith, because it was just one record and one very short tour and that was it.

JK Do you think that the Blind Faith experience soured your view of the music business or was it already a little bit jaundiced?

GB I have never had a great love of the music business, I never have.

JK Do you think that is why you are still able to do very well with it then, when it suits you rather than the business dictating to you?

GB Well basically I am retired. If I am playing any music at all it is jazz music. I am a jazz player. I’d rather play jazz, I hate rock and roll.

JK You must find it amusing then that a lot of people regard you very highly as a rock drummer?

GB (Laughs) I am in the rock and roll hall of fame for fuck sake! I made a conscious decision in 1961 along with an old friend of mine Graham Bond. We just decided we weren’t earning enough money playing jazz so we were going to go commercial. The idea was to play very good music that was popular.

JK I think it would be fair to say then that you did do incredibly well although not so much with Graham Bond. I like the Graham Bond organisation but the problem I think with it was the management. They got you into some strange situations like doing a dreadful film called the Gonk goes Beat.

GB Oh Yeah The Gonk Goes Beat (Laughs). I don’t know how that came about! Some of the singles like Tammy were idiotic as well.

JK But live, I have heard a couple of bootlegs tapes of them over the years and they sound really good.

GB It was a great band that never really captured their sound on record. The band live, was amazing.

JK Do you think that is sometimes the case where you get a great live band that never capture really well on album although Disraeli Gears came pretty close I guess. Blind Faith was more a studio project first and then live, do you think that would be the difference?

GB Well it all started in Stevie’s cottage in Berkshire. We used to go down there and just hang out. We smoked lots of dope and played lots of music and enjoyed ourselves. That is really how the band was born. Then we went in the studio and the album did not take very long at all. I think it took ten days to record.

JK Which is a phenomenal time for an album like that?

GB I don’t know. I have never taken more than two weeks to record an album throughout my career.

JK You must laugh at some of these musicians that take a few years then!

GB Even some who take three months or more! I think it is just a waste of fucking time and money.

JK I suppose ultimately if you can’t play it live and reproduce it, what is the point?

GB If you can’t do it by take three, forget it. It’s true.

JK Ginger thanks for your insight on the Blind Faith DVD. I think it was a wonderful album and band and the film really captures that.

GB I have only heard it twice actually and the songs just stick in your brain and particularly those four I mentioned.

JK So 37 years on it still sounds great to you then.

GB Yeah, very much so. Stevie is amazing – he is another jazzer though you see.

JK I think it’s fair to say you are all amazing during that performance and I think we are lucky that it was captured so well.

GB Alright thank you.

Here's a posting from a Doyle Bramhall II messageboard.

Doyle made several more trips to Doug's Tonezone; the last one Doug fixed one of his Wah-wah pedals. Doyle was in a big hurry to get everything he needed to get done, as Eric's tour is just about to begin.
Doug told me that he asked Doyle why Eric thought he needed a band with 3 guitar players in it, Doyle told him that Eric wanted to be able to sing more on this tour and not have to do all the guitar playing.

Eric Clapton gets a new Derek in slide guitarist
Автор: SergeK   Дата: 21.04.06 23:44:07
Сообщить модераторам | Ссылка
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In 1970, Eric Clapton joined Duane Allman and three other musicians as Derek and the Dominos to record one of rock-and-roll's masterwork albums, "Layla and other Assorted Love Songs."

Now, Clapton has a new Derek.

Derek Trucks, a 26-year-old slide guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band and leader of his own critically praised group, is to join Clapton's band on a European tour starting on May 5 that many fans hope will rekindle some of the Derek and the Dominos magic.

The tour also marks another step in Trucks' evolution from an upstart blues player who shared stages with the Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan at age 11, to a musician critics including Rolling Stone magazine call one of the best guitarists of his generation, with influences ranging from Indian classical music to jazz visionary Sun Ra.

Clapton, who reunited with his blues-rock band Cream last year, is giving few clues about this tour, and Trucks says he doesn't expect a Derek and the Dominos revival.

But Trucks, who was named after the group and whose slide style has been likened to Allman's, has dusted off tunes from "Layla," for his own band just in case.

"In a way it was kind of a warm-up, or at least to get those tunes back in my head," Trucks said of the "Layla" songs.

"I think maybe we'll do a few tunes from that period and that record, but it's an Eric Clapton tour," he said in an interview before a recent concert.

Two of the original Derek and the Dominos members -- Allman and Carl Radle -- are dead. A third, Jim Gordon, developed schizophrenia and was imprisoned after killing his mother in 1983.

Trucks began playing a yard-sale guitar at age 9. His father, Chris, a brother of Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks, chaperoned him through the rock-music world and taught him to avoid its excesses. Still youthful looking, Trucks is cherub-faced with long blond hair usually worn in a ponytail.

Intent on developing his own style, he said he stopped listening to blues guitarists for long periods and instead paid attention to singers, horn players and Indian classical music.

Trucks is a meticulous player. He does not use a pick, and his slide notes slice and shimmer through vintage amplifiers, unmodified by the effects pedals favored by many electric guitarists.

DEVOTIONAL MUSIC

On Songlines, the new CD by his group, The Derek Trucks Band, original tracks include the rocking "Revolution," and there are reggae, soul and blues standards, as well as a song based on Islamic "qawwali" devotional tunes.

"I felt in some ways that this record "Songlines" was going to be a breaking out of the band. It's going to turn a lot of people onto the group that were completely unfamiliar with it, and I think having the qawwali tune is a big part of what the band does and we wanted to showcase it that way," Trucks said.

Trucks says a key mentor was the experimental jazz-rock performer Col. Bruce Hampton.

"He turned me onto (John Coltrane's) "A Love Supreme," and Sun Ra and just all these great records -- right when I needed it," Trucks said. "He takes musicians that have natural ability and just kind of shatters everything they thought about music, and then you pick up the pieces and then you figure out that there's a whole new world out there."

Music is a family business for Trucks, who is based in Jacksonville, Florida. Besides playing in the Allmans with his uncle, he is married to blues singer Susan Tedeschi. The keyboard player in his band, Kofi Burbridge, is brother to Allmans bassist Oteil Burbridge. "It's important to have people around that you actually give a damn about," he said.

The Derek Trucks Band's roots go back to 1994. Its first CD was in 1997.

The New York Times, which gave a generally favorable review to "Songlines," suggested Trucks' talents were outpacing his bandmates'. "If I felt that way personally, I probably would have moved on , but I feel like there's a lot of music to be made with this group," Trucks said.

HARLEY DEALERSHIP

Last winter the band played posh concert halls. In April, it played a Harley Davidson dealership. "When you play in a Harley dealership you don't play the Indian classical tunes or the straight-ahead jazz tunes," he joked.

Trucks doesn't sing: He leaves that to bandmate Mike Mattison. In performance he is a figure of concentration, revealing only an occasional grin.

"When you're on stage and focusing ... You're hypercritical. You want to be able to listen back to a tape and not just be horrified by what I hear," he said.

"There are actually times where you can actually watch yourself and the band play, like you're almost stepping away from it," he said. "And then you suddenly come back and there's a few wrong notes on the way back. On a great night, you're a spectator too."

Rolling Stone in 2003 named Trucks to its top-100 list of guitar greats. He was the youngest to join legends including Clapton and Allman. But Trucks acknowledges the era of iconic guitar heroes has passed. "I think probably for the better. Not many that were held up in that status survived it," he said.
