Slowhand Visits Derek Trucks’ Hometown: Jacksonville FL

Eric Clapton's 2006 / 2007 World Tour stopped in Jacksonville, Florida on 21 October - the hometown of band member Derek Trucks. Since 1994, Trucks has fronted his own band, the Derek Trucks Band. In 1999, he signed on as a full-time member of the Allman Brothers Band. His uncle, Butch Trucks, is that band's drummer and one of the founding members. Derek will continue to tour with Eric throughout this world tour.

The Jacksonville concert was second of three concerts in the state. Seventeen songs were presented at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Fans in attendance reported an amazing show, with Eric and his two guitarists (Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II) trading leads throughout the evening. Solos by Tim Carmon, Chris Stainton and Willie Weeks were also acknowledged by the crowd with loud applause.

The setlist featured numbers from Eric's extensive back catalog including "I Shot The Sheriff" and "Motherless Children" from "461 Ocean Boulevard" (1974), "Pretending" and "Running On Faith" from 1989's "Journeyman" as well as "After Midnight" from his self-titled 1970 debut. "Key To The Highway" and "San Francisco Bay Blues" have remained in the sit down portion of the set.

Review by Lori Warden / Jacksonville, Fl

All I can say is WOW. I have been a fan for more years than I will readily admit, but its been a long long time. This was my first Clapton concert though, and I brought my 15 year old guitar player son with me. Both of us were amazed at the unbelievable talent of Eric and his band. I had been telling my son that Eric is GOD for many years and last night proved mama right :) He was so smooth, effortless guitar playing we were just blown away. Bramhall and Trucks were amazing their solo's crisp and clean, Eric was so generous to give them the time they deserved. The highlight of the evening for me was Layla, I knew it would be good but the bands rendition last night just blew me away. I want more....Thanks to Eric and the band for such an amazing show.

Review by Jim Antonicello

This is the second time I've seen Eric and company in the last week. I was at the RBC show in Raleigh, NC also. The acoustics were very different at this venue. Maybe it had something to do with where we sat. We were on the bands left side and the sound did not seem as robust as the RBC center.

The set list varied a little during the sit-down with "Back Home" and "I am Yours" replaced with "Key to the Highway" and "San Francisco Bay Blues".

The band is extremely tight and genuinely seem to enjoy the interplay. Eric gives ample room for every band member to stretch out and demonstrate their chops. Derek Trucks received load ovations after every solo as he was the hometown favorite. Chris Stainton was also on top of his game tonight with several barrelhouse piano solo's reminiscent of his playing with the Grease band. The rhythm section is tight and driving and both Willie Weeks and Steve Jordan get to demonstrate their vast talents. Jordan's drumming on Crossroads is superb.

Eric's solos these days are more compact and not as fiery as in days past but you can see he enjoys playing and entertaining his fans. Speaking of his fans, it is apparent that there is real love and affection for Slowhand. I've wondered lately what direction Eric's career will take as he ages. If he never plays again or records another song (God forbid), he will already provided more musical pleasure than anyone could have ever asked for. I've listened to the entire new album and it is a good one. I like it much better than Back Home.

I am taking my 15 year old son to Auburn Hills, Michigan on April 5, 2007 and I hope that is not the last time I see him live. Eric, if you read these reviews, thank you for music and entertaining and I am happy that you are still incented enough to entertain us. Please allow us to enjoy this show again and again by releasing it on DVD. I have just about worn out Live at Hyde Park! Eric is definitely not God but he is one helluva musician and maker of beautiful music.

Clapton Wraps Up 2006 US Tour In Miami

Eric Clapton and his band have been on the road in the United States and Canada since 16 September. This leg of the 2006 / 2007 Tour stopped in 18 cities before arriving in Miami for the final night before a two and a half week break.

The set list from Miami's American Airlines Arena included chestnuts from Eric's back catalog, such as "Anyday", "Cocaine", "Layla", and "Running On Faith". A short acoustic set included, "Key To The Highway", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "San Francisco Bay Blues." Blistering guitar work from Eric, Doyle and Derek thrilled concert-goers on numbers like "Motherless Children," "Little Queen of Spades" and "Cocaine."

Clapton's World Tour picks up again in Osaka, Japan on 11 November with dates in that country thru 6 December. In January / February 2007, the tour moves on to Singapore, Bang Kok, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. More dates are expected in the U.S. later in the year. Eric's 23 September concert in Michigan, which was postponed due to illness, has already been rescheduled for 5 April 2007.

The concert was the last of the US Tour 2006. The band is now on a break for a few weeks before they head off to Japan for concerts there in November and December. Eric and his band will return to the US in 2007. No dates have yet been announced.

Review #1

Ridiculously unbelievable show. Best concert I've seen in a long time. I took my 8 year old son, and he couldn't stop marveling at Clapton's precision. The electric sets were crisp, clean, and fiery. The songs that needed to rock like Got To Get Better In A Little While, Motherless Children, Layla, Cocaine, etc.. more than did so; while the blues numbers not only made the guitars cry, it made me cry.

The sit down set was homey to say the least. Even though we were in a cavernous arena, you felt like you were sitting around someone's living room while the band played the folksy, bluesy acoustic numbers ( same set as Jacksonville ). The Allman connection was quite palpable while watching Derek and EC duo at the end of Layla. I can only wonder if Duane didn't have something to do with Trucks getting together with EC. Derek's slide playing would surely make Duane proud.

My son said he'd sure like to take guitar lessons from EC-something only an 8 year old could say, but how true nonetheless. Great night, great show, truly a God like experience for us.

These solid-gold friendships mean the world to me.These solid-gold friendships mean the world to me.
By B.B. King as told to Alanna Nash

1. Meeting Eric Clapton
I guess I've earned the right to make a few observations about life, since I am now an old man of 81. And one thing I know for sure: Age has nothing to do with friendship. Neither does race.
Looking back over my long career as a bluesman, I know that three of my friendships -- with guitarists Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimi Hendrix -- stand out for me. Each of these men has given me so much more than I ever gave them.

I first met Eric in 1967 at Café Au Go Go in Manhattan, when he was a youngster of 22 performing with Cream. He saw me in the audience and pointed me out. After the show, we got up onstage and made some music together. Eric pulls people in, and he's been a good friend to me ever since. We've never talked about this, but I believe he and I bonded because neither of us had what you would call a normal upbringing.

I grew up very, very poor on a plantation in Kilmichael, Mississippi. While Eric had a lot of advantages I didn't, he was raised in England thinking his grandparents were his parents, and that his real mom was his older sister. I knew my mother, but she died when I was nine. Then I lived alone until I was 13 and rejoined my father. I can't really say how I survived. I worked for a white family that was very good to me. I milked 20 cows a day. After I finished, I could go to school. I had to walk five miles to the one-room schoolhouse (the white kids had buses). I guess you never miss what you never had. But it all feeds into playing the blues.

Eric told the newspapers in England that the one thing he really enjoyed about visiting the U.S. was meeting B.B. King. He told them, "If you like blues, you should go out and see him." That was a big thing for me. It was before I ever traveled to Great Britain.

Eric appeared on my first music DVD, B.B. King and Friends: A Night of Red Hot Blues, which we recorded live in Los Angeles in 1987. Straight from his tour, he chartered a plane in order to get there one night, though his fingers were sore from playing. I thought that was tremendous. He could have said, "I'm tired. I just finished work," but he didn't. Others were invited who didn't come, but Eric's a man of his word. His heart's as big as I am.

He plays better blues than most of us and may be the best living rock'n'roll guitarist there is. I loved working with him in the studio; he always had good ideas. In 1999 we recorded Riding with the King, which became my first platinum CD and introduced me to a new generation of fans. We won a Grammy for it in 2001, and all I could say to Eric was thanks. No way would it have happened without him.

2. Jimi and Stevie Ray: Like My Own Kids
Even though there's a 20-year difference in our ages, I don't consider Eric a son. But I did think of Stevie Ray and Jimi as being just as much my kids as my own 15 biological children. Stevie used to come to me just like my sons did and ask about music. As young and handsome as he was, I thought he'd want to talk about girls. But he and Jimi talked to me about chords and how to make certain sounds on the guitar.

I first met Jimi Hendrix in the early '60s when he was playing for Little Richard. We toured for a few weeks together, and whenever his group had a break, he'd come by my dressing room and talk. Same thing with Stevie. He'd play something and say, "What do you think of this, B.? How does it sound?"

He would ask for pointers. It made me feel good, like a teacher feels when he sees a student doing well. Stevie was very fast on the guitar. I'd tell him, "If I could play that well, I'd probably play as fast as I could too. But since I don't play so well, I play slower to try to make my music more precise." He would reply, "I just play what I feel."

Stevie was on tour with Eric when he died in that plane crash in 1990. When I first got the news on the radio, I heard it was Eric who had died. Later I found out it was really Stevie. I hurt just as bad. Same thing about Jimi's death in 1970 from drugs -- I heard it on the radio.

I wish I'd gotten to talk to Jimi about the dangers of drugs. But when I knew him he wasn't a superstar yet, and I don't know if he was using then. He didn't really look to me for personal advice, but now I tell younger musicians, "Get high off your music, not drugs or liquor."

Stevie was different. He hung on my every word. Whenever he'd come to see me, he would sit down, lean against my legs and talk. He had a thing about him that just made him lovable.

I've been going back to Indianola, Mississippi, for 40 years now, playing free concerts in the park for children. As recently as 15 years ago, you would see just little black kids there. But in the last 10 years you'd begin to see a rainbow of color. It makes me so proud it seems my buttons are gonna pop off my shirt.

Like Stevie, the children sit down around me, this old white-haired black guy. Kids who are 10, 12, 14, they ask questions like, "Hey, B.B., what about So-and-So?" Their faces light up when I start to talk; they get close and take in every word. You might say I have thousands of children -- Eric, Stevie and Jimi have just been the most popular.

One other thing about Eric Clapton and me. Being from Mississippi, I've got a pretty bad mouth. I swear a lot. Eric never does. He's a real English gentleman. He'll do anything he can to help people. He even opened a rehab center in the Caribbean for folks suffering from addiction. He's the kind of person the world needs more of. Not only as a musician, but as a man. I just love the guy.

Press Release from the City of Escondido, California
27 October 2006

At the November 1 City Council meeting, Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler will read a proclamation recognizing November 7 as "The Road to Escondido Day", the date which Eric Clapton and J.J. Cale release their collaborative CD of the same name.

In mid-September, an official news release announced that Clapton and Cale's new CD would bear the City's name. Escondido community members were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the serendipitous honor.

"We believe Eric Clapton found Escondido to be an intriguing place," said Mayor Pfeiler. "Escondido believes in and supports art and we are absolutely delighted to be named on his new CD. Escondido is unique and now the world will wonder: 'Where is Escondido?' Those who search for us will find an awesome community!"

While the official news release about the CD did not cite specific references to Escondido beyond the title, various sources speculate that some songs were written in or around the city. Additionally, Eric Clapton was spotted at a Friday evening Cruisin' Grand last year and J.J. Cale resides in the area.

Official copies of the proclamation will be sent to Eric Clapton and J.J. Cale, while one will be kept at City Hall.
