Devoted fans queue to meet Sir Paul

Sir Paul McCartney was all smiles when he met adoring fans in New York.

The former Beatle took a break from his bitter divorce from estranged wife Heather to sign copies of his classical composition Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart).

His most devoted followers queued for two days outside the Virgin Megastore in Times Square for the chance to meet their idol.

Many gripped his hands as he spoke to them and emerged in tears, overwhelmed with emotion.

Afterwards they said they had avoided asking the star about the breakdown of his marriage.

New Yorker Susan Roazzi said: "I told him that we believe in his goodness and wish he and his family peace.

"He said 'Thank you very much'. He seemed very warm and responsive."

Mrs Roazzi said she was saddened by what had happened.

Sir Paul and his wife were catapulted into the headlines when divorce papers claiming he mistreated her were leaked to the media.

Through his lawyers, the pop star said he would "vigorously" defend himself against the accusations.

Paul signs autographs at Carnegie

Paul came to Carnegie Hall around 2pm for rehearsals and entered through the back entrance. He was accompanied by his personal assistant, John Hammel and his head of security, Mark Hamilton.

There were about 20 people waiting and Paul signed several autographs. He came back out after 5pm and there were about 80 people waiting. Fans were barricaded on both sides of the sidewalk. He moved from one side to the other and signed autographs as he walked to his car. Some fans managed to jump the barriers and run over to his car (black Audi) which pulled away.

Paul came back to Carnegie right before the performance and received a standing ovation when he entered his box which was directly center to the stage in the balcony. It is believed his daughter, Mary McCartney was with him.

Some celebrities spotted in the audience: Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Alec Baldwin, Lorne Michaels, Elvis Costello, and Conan O'Brien.

After the autograph signing at Virgin on Monday, Paul went to the Riverside Church in Harlem for the "Ecce" rehearsals.

Adoring fans meet Macca at signing

Adoring Sir Paul McCartney fans have met their idol at a signing for his new classical album.

The former Beatle looked relaxed and laughed and joked as he made a rare public appearance at the Virgin Megastore in London's Piccadilly.

Devoted fans from across the world had been camped out since Monday morning for the chance to come face to face with Sir Paul.

It was the first time the music legend had met his British fans in person since his divorce battle with Heather Mills turned bitter.

At the head of the queue was Joaquin Baltrons, a 40-year-old bank worker from Lloret de Mar, Spain, who flew to London especially for the event.

He had with him a leather-bound book he had written chronicling his time following Sir Paul on tour, which he wanted to give to the star.

He said: "I've been here for more than 51 hours since 9.30 on Monday morning but it's definitely worth it. This is the seventh time I will have met him.

"I've followed him since he was in the Beatles and ever since he left; he was always my favourite.

"I want to give him the book that I have written, it is about my life following him on tour. There are many photos in the book and there are only two copies of this book in the world. One is mine which he has autographed for me and the other I want to give to him. It is a Christmas present from me."

Macca fans brave Arctic conditions

Scores of Beatles fanatics braved a night of arctic conditions to show their support to Sir Paul McCartney in London's Piccadilly.

Enthusiasts from around the world spent the night sleeping outside Richard Branson's flagship Virgin store to give the Scouse megastar a warm welcome when he arrives later today to sign copies of his new classical music album, Ecce Cor Meum.

Die-hard supporters of the former Beatle and Wings star began their vigil as early as midnight last night so as not to miss the opportunity to see their hero.

Paul Virgo, 29, from Hinckley, Leicestershire, drove down yesterday to show the 64 year-old his support over his bitter divorce with his estranged wife Heather Mills.

He said: "I'm here to meet Macca. I love him. We've been queuing since just after midnight last night and I'm here to meet the man and show my support.

"The amount of people here shows you how much he's loved in this country. Lady Mucca is trying to get as much as she can possible get from him and no-one believes the rubbish she's coming out with."

Jon Colegrave, 27, from Hastings, arrived at the store in Piccadilly Circus before midnight last night, but he's unhappy to have been overtaken in the queue after temporarily nodding off asleep.

He said: "I've been really excited about meeting him and I'm really worried that we might miss him now after I fell asleep. It was such a unbelievably cold night so it's lucky we had the odd tot of brandy in our sleeping bags.

"It's all so great, our thoughts of Paul keep us warm. That there's 200 people more here than there would have been five years ago shows the support that everyone wants to give him in this ugly battle with his money-grabbing wife. The country loves him and he'll come good in the end."

Venessa Leslie (CORR), 27, from Texas, said: "I've been here since 4.00am in the freezing cold, but I didn't plan ahead so I have no sleeping bag."

She added: "It's through my love of Macca and the Beatles that I met my husband on a Beatles appreciation site. I moved over to England and we've been happily married for four years.

"It's ironic really, given the trouble that Macca's going through with his divorce, but everyone knows she's lying and the truth will out in the end.

"She deserves none of his money whatsoever. All I'm worried about is the baby, but I think she's worried about the money. I never liked her in the first place."

The long and winding queue

Sir Paul McCartney still has his loyal fans - hundreds queued around the block today for a glimpse of the man and a scribbled signature.

Devotees of the former Beatle were camped outside Piccadilly's Virgin Megastore, waiting for him to arrive to sign copies of his new classical album and DVD. Sir Paul, 64, was due to appear at midday, but many of his followers turned up as early as 4pm yesterday.

They came from as far afield as Florida and Australia. There were couples in their sixties who remember the Beatle from before a certain Heather Mills was born.

McCartney's estranged wife - whose leg was amputated below the knee following a road accident - has just appeared on US TV, saying she was utterly in love with Sir Paul when they married, adding of their split: "I would rather someone come up and chop off all my limbs than go through what I went through."

Macca's hot breakfast...and Heather's cold coffee

Sir Paul McCartney has not done much smiling lately as the fallout from his acrimonious split from Heather Mills continues but the former Beatle looked a picture of happiness as he went out for a morning stroll with his daughter Mary.

The pair met up for breakfast at Richoux Café in St John’s Wood before Macca escorted his eldest child back to her car.

They would certainly have had a great deal to discuss as this week has seen the release of The Beatles Love Album.

Mary McCartney, like her late mother Linda, is a professional photographer.

She has taken portaits of Tony and Cherie Blair’s son Leo and photographed Madonna and Guy Ritchie at their wedding.

Meanwhile, Sir Paul’s estranged second wife Ms Mills cut a lonely figure as she sat drinking coffee by herself in Starbucks in Hove, West Sussex near her home.
