The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: Yeah, yeah, yeah!
It was 50 years ago today (well, this week) that the Fab Four performed its only San Diego concert. For some, it was a life-changing night.

By George Varga

It was an undeniably historic event when The Beatles performed their only San Diego concert, 50 years ago this week. It was also a fluke.

The show, which took place on Aug. 28, 1965, at Balboa Stadium, was not even on the band’s original itinerary. A last-minute addition to their North American summer tour, the date here was belatedly shoehorned in before the legendary Fab Four’s Aug. 29 and 30 shows at the Hollywood Bowl.

That didn’t make the Balboa Stadium concert any less memorable for the loudly ecstatic fans here, who got to witness what is still the most important and influential band in rock ’n’ roll history. But only 17,013 of the 27,014 available tickets were bought. Consequently, The Beatles earned $50,135.17, just $135.17 more than the $50,000 they’d been guaranteed, in advance, for their performance here.

(The accompanying article, "The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: Facts & Figures," gives a breakdown of The Beatles' Balboa show, including the songs the band performed, the opening acts, backstage catering requirements and more. "The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: The press conference" provides the band's largely inane Q&A with local media members.)

“The stadium wasn’t full, but — for San Diego — that was a huge crowd back then,” recalled veteran drummer Randy Hoffman, 64, who is now Palomar College’s publicity coordinator for the performing arts.

“It was sort of a shock that they played here at all. And it was enormously significant for people our age, who were experiencing this new explosion of music. It will always remain one of the pinnacle events of rock history in San Diego. The Beatles were superstars when they came here. The first time the Rolling Stones came here (in late 1964), they drew 200 people.”

An entire chapter is devoted to The Beatles’ Balboa Stadium concert in “Some Fun Tonight! The Backstage Story of How the Beatles Rocked America: The Historic Tours of 1964-1966.”

Published last year, the comprehensive chronicle was written by Chuck Gunderson, who has degrees in history from San Diego State and the University of San Diego. A longtime Beatles collector, he spent nearly a decade researching and compiling “Some Fun Tonight.” The labor-of-love book’s two volumes together weigh in at nearly 13 pounds.

“I discovered some tour-planning documents that (Beatles manager) Brian Epstein had pored over in 1964,” said Gunderson, who will discuss his book at a free Sept. 1 lecture at San Diego City College’s Saville Theatre. Local music writer Steve Thorn will talk about the history of Balboa Stadium, while the Baja Bugs will perform each of the songs included in The Beatles' Balboa Stadium concert. (See below for details.)

“After the band performed on the Ed Sullivan TV show, they were preparing to come back that fall for a full-fledged tour," Gunderson said. "And Brian was looking at having the first show on Aug. 18, 1964, in San Diego. But, because of contractual obligations in the U.K., they could not get back to the States in time to do that date.

"So they did their first 1964 show in the U.S. on Aug. 19 at the Cow Palace (near San Francisco) instead. Otherwise, San Diego would have been the first official tour date in this country for The Beatles.”

The band, which stopped touring in 1966 and imploded before the decade was over, never played in San Diego again. Gunderson has a good reason for not having attended the Balboa Stadium concert. He was only 3 at the time.

For those who did go, it was an opportunity to experience firsthand a band that — like no other before or since — transformed popular music and culture. It was, however, a fleeting performance.

How fleeting?

The Beatles ripped through 12 songs in just 31 minutes, opening with their version of the Isley Brothers’ “Twist and Shout” and concluding with the band’s driving rocker, “I’m Down.” Brief though their performance may have been, it was historic for several reasons.

This held true regardless of the lukewarm review in the San Diego Union, which began: "The sound worse than death roared in Balboa Stadium last night but it really wasn't as bad as all that...Two years ago it was the new sound, the thump music with a beat from down under. Last night, the sound was as good — or as bad (depending on your viewpoint) — as ever."

Precedent-setting and life-changing
Precedent-setting and life-changing

The Union's review went on to describe the concert as: "entertainment, the regimented kind, with the San Diego police force keeping the 18,000 fans in order." It made no mention of how precedent-setting the Beatles' performance here, although the precedents it set may have seemed less apparent back then. Nor did it note the lengths to which some young fans went to attend the show, with or without tickets.

Not only was this the first rock concert to be held at Balboa Stadium, it was part of the first stadium tour by any rock band. While attendance was considerably larger at other stadium dates on the Beatles’ 1965 concert trek, only the tour-opening show on Aug. 15 at New York’s Shea Stadium (attended by more than 50,000 fans) sold out. As was the case at virtually all of their performances, the constant roar of the crowd was often louder than the band.

“The screaming was incredibly loud,” recalled San Diego's Linda Tonnesen.

“I was able to move from the upper level to the lower level at Balboa Stadium, and it just got louder. The noise, the music, and the experience of being at a Beatles concert was nothing any of us had experienced before. I was also so vain that I refused to wear my glasses, so I couldn’t see them too well either!”

For Carmen Salmon, attending the Balboa Stadium concert was a life-changing event.

She subsequently co-founded and drummed in The Wheeling Sands, an all-girl band that specialized in playing Beatles' songs. She later gave each of her children Beatles-related names: Rocky (after the song “Rocky Raccoon”); Zak (after the name Beatles drummer Ringo Starr gave his firstborn son); Sunshine (after the song “Good Day Sunshine”); and “Jet” (after the Paul McCartney & Wings song “Jet”). She also gave them conventional middle names, in case they wanted wiggle room as they grew older. All four of her children, now parents themselves, have kept their Beatles-inspired monikers.

“When The Beatles came on at Balboa Stadium, this big roar started — and it wouldn’t stop,” said Salmon, who was then a senior at Chula Vista High School and now heads Come Together, a 23-year-old Beatles fans club.

“I can still hear that roar from the concert. It’s something I’ll never forget. Girls were crying and screaming; I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like that again. I don’t remember the music, because I didn’t hear it, but it was magic!

"The Beatles came to America soon after President Kennedy had been assassinated. There was all this turmoil in the world, and they came at exactly the right time to bring us up. Our generation wanted something of our own, and The Beatles stayed with us. … They were part of our family; they’ve always been part of my family. They were ours, and who would think — 50 years later — we’d still be talking about them?”

The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: Facts & figures

By George Varga

In today's article, "The Beatles at Balboa Stadium, Yeah, yeah, yeah!", we examine the historical significance of the Fab Four's only San Diego concert (which took place 50 years ago this week) and talk to some fans who attended. We also preview the Sept. 1 lecture about the concert at San Diego City College, which will also feature a performance by the Baja Bugs of each song The Beatles performed at Balboa Stadium.

Another accompanying article, "The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: The press conference," puts you front-and-center for the band's backstage Q&A with members of the local press, whose questions (par for an era when rock music was still regarded as a novelty) were characteristically inane.

Below, we take a closer look at the actual 1965 concert here by The Beatles, including the band's set list, opening acts, ticket prices, backstage food for the band (which cost a whopping $33.96), and more.

The Beatles at Balboa Stadium: By the Numbers

The Beatles’ Balboa Stadium set list: “Twist and Shout,” “She’s a Woman,” “I Feel Fine,” “Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Baby’s in Black,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Help!” and “I’m Down.”

The opening acts: Cannibal and The Headhunters, Brenda Holloway, Sounds Incorporated and King Curtis, with the Discotheque Dancers.

Tickets: They were priced at $3.50, $4.50 and $5.50 each.

Attendance: 17,013

Unsold tickets: 10,001

Payment: The Beatles were guaranteed a minimum of $50,000, plus a percentage of ticket sales. Because attendance was so low, the band’s total payment was $50,135.17.

The venue: Balboa Stadium was located adjacent to San Diego High School and City College. Most of the stadium was torn down in 1979. The Beatles were the first rock band to headline there. Many more followed.

The preshow news conference: Among the 100 or so media members in attendance were then-local TV talk show host Regis Philbin and radio/TV personality Wink Martindale.

Sound system rental: $725.20

Stage construction: $249

Nurses at stadium: $40

Ambulance service at stadium: $25

House light man: $20

Posters: $7.80

Tips to stage crew, policemen and firemen: $130

Backstage food & accoutrements: The Beatles, as per their contract, were provided with: one rented piano; two cases of soda pop; two tubs of Kentucky Fried Chicken; three portable TV sets; four cots and sets of clean sheets; five one-gallon bottles of water; 10 dozen paper cups and 24 assorted sandwiches. The total cost for their backstage food was $33.96.

Security: Balboa Stadium had a 4-foot-high Cyclone fence around the perimeter of the field, which no one — except 100-plus policemen — were allowed on. Some eager fans jumped over the fence and raced toward the stage, but none got there. “The police were chasing the kids around and tackling them like it was a Chargers’ game,” recalled concert attendee Randy Hoffman. His account was confirmed by then-San Diego Police Lt. Ray Hoobler, who served as Police Chief here from 1970-1975. “Officer Rufino Yaptangco made one of the finest open field tackles I’ve ever seen,” Hoobler said in a 1984 San Diego Union interview. “There were 18,000 in attendance, and the noise was damned near debilitating. It was bedlam.”
