Jerry Garcia Comes AliveJerry Garcia Comes Alive
New series to offer live recordings from Dead guitarist

The new Pure Jerry live album series launches this month and will give Grateful Dead fans a chance to hear some of the best of the 500-plus concerts that frontman Jerry Garcia performed away from the Dead. First up in the series is Theater 1839, San Francisco, July 29 and 30, 1977, a three-CD set capturing a Jerry Garcia Band that included late Dead keyboardist Keith Godchaux and his wife, singer Donna Godchaux, longtime Garcia bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt.

Pure Jerry is the second release by the late guitarist's estate to fully establish Garcia as an artist, and brand, separate from the Grateful Dead. Earlier this year, Rhino Records' six-CD box set, All Good Things, repackaged all of Garcia's solo records while clearing out the archives for unreleased treasures.

The first Pure Jerry release (available through jerrygarcia.com) includes three CDs of soundboard material from one of Garcia's best bands. "We spoke with some people that knew his shows historically," says Christopher Sabec, who works with the Garcia's estate and was executive producer on the project. "We knew we wanted a Bay area show and we knew we wanted this era. So, luckily, we didn't have to pour through hundreds of shows."

Sabec has been integral in trying to better establish Garcia's legacy away from the Dead. A year ago he oversaw the removal of Garcia's tapes from the Grateful Dead vault and began pouring through material that became the box set. Sabec says that All Good Things exhausted the hidden studio treasures -- "Most of the gems are on the box set," he says. "We wanted it to be everything, fully A to Z" -- which prompted the investigation into Garcia's live work, despite the fact that some of the tapes are decades old, and the ones that yielded the first Pure Jerry set were covered in what he describes as "a mysterious goo."

For future releases, an email address has been set up (purejerry@jerrygarcia.com), where fans can send comments about favorite shows, eras and bands. "We've already gotten a big response," Sabec says. "And as we start sifting through these, I think people will see that we're paying attention."

Plans currently call for three to four Pure Jerry albums to be released each year. As the guitarist toured with various collaborators as his Dead schedule allowed, there are numerous sounds and eras that the series can encompass. Pure Jerry also offers the opportunity to hear his cross-genre cover versions extended often to ten minutes. Among those covered on Theater 1839 are Jimmy Cliff ("The Harder They Come"), Bob Dylan ("Tangled Up in Blue"), the Band ("The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"), Bob Marley ("Stir It Up"), Irving Berlin ("Russian Lullaby") and Smokey Robinson ("I Second That Emotion"). "There was such a variety and vitality in the ensembles he played with," Sabec says. "There's a four-piece rock band, a bluegrass band, solo, sometimes with backup singers doing a gospel thing. The goal we had in mind with Pure Jerry was to celebrate Jerry Garcia as an individual talent, as a guitarist and as a musician."

Track list for Theater 1839:

Disc One:

Mystery Train
Russian Lullaby
That's What Love Will Make You Do
Stir It Up
Simple Twist of Fate
The Way You Do the Things You Do
Catfish John

Disc Two:

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
They Love Each Other
I Second That Emotion
Let Me Roll It

Disc Three:

Grateful Dead's 'Movie' Revamped For DVD

How does one improve upon what is already considered a landmark concert film? In the case of "The Grateful Dead Movie," it's by restoring the negative and improving the sound for its DVD release, and adding a second disc of with 95 minutes of concert footage that didn't make the cut for the film's 1977 release.

Due Nov. 9 via Monterey Video, "The Grateful Dead Movie" captures the band's legendary mid-October 1974 "farewell" concerts at San Francisco's Winterland. The project was taken up by frontman Jerry Garcia as the Dead prepared for a hiatus of undetermined length.

Garcia worked on the film for more than two years with film editor Susan Crutcher. Together they preserved not only the band's performance through its groundbreaking (if behemoth and fiscally crippling) "wall of sound," but what it was really like to attend a Dead show when the act was in its ramshackle prime.

The first disc boasts a high definition transfer of the film, restoring the full frame that was edited for its VHS release. Fans can choose from three audio selections: a Dolby Digital 5.1 version of original theatrical mix, as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 mix from the master multi-track tapes. There is also a feature-length commentary track with Crutcher and editor John Nutt.

The second disc includes unreleased performances of such Dead favorites as "Uncle John's Band," "Sugaree," "Dark Star" and "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider," among others. All of the footage was transferred from the original 16mm camera film negative and can be heard in either Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital 2.0 mixes.

Also included on the bonus disc are documentaries on the making of the DVD and the animated sequences in the film, plus a third titled "A Look Back" featuring new interviews with surviving band members. Additionally, a 1974 TV commercial for the Dead's "Mars Hotel" album is included, as is a gallery of photos, film stills and other items related to the project.

Old And In The Way,

Dead Come Alive on Box Dead Come Alive on Box
Ten-disc set captures legendary 1969 Fillmore West stand

The Grateful Dead recorded their historic double LP Live/Dead -- the first of their many multidisc concert albums -- during a four-night stand, February 27th through March 2nd, 1969, at San Francisco's Fillmore West. Guitarist Bob Weir has not listened to the original tapes from all eight sets for thirty years. "But I remember most of what we were up to back then," he says. "We were testing the limits, looking for places to go. Wild and woolly was the flavor of the day."
In November, Grateful Dead Records will issue every note from that long weekend as a ten-CD box, Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings. The original vinyl release -- the first live album recorded on sixteen-track tape, featuring definitive live takes of the Dead classics "Dark Star" and "St. Stephen" and some of Jerry Garcia's best lead guitar on record -- used only about an hour of music from the whole engagement, along with two tracks from an earlier gig at the Avalon Ballroom. This lavish set, available only from the Dead's Web site for $79.95 and limited to 10,000 copies, has four different, epic versions of "Dark Star" as well as long spins through "That's It for the Other One," from 1968's Anthem of the Sun, and songs from the then-unreleased Aoxomoxoa. (In October, Rhino will release a three-CD retail edition of Fillmore West 1969 with tracks from the box, none of which duplicate those on Live/Dead.)

"I always said that if we ever did a complete run of shows as a release like this, this one stood head and shoulders above everything else we have on multitrack tape," says Dead archivist David Lemieux, who co-produced Fillmore West 1969. "This is similar to a run of John Coltrane at the Village Vanguard, where you get repeats of songs, but each performance is unique and excellent. This is the Dead at the height of their powers."

Weir agrees. "Dark Star," which the Dead then played in a medley with "St. Stephen" and a rhythmic twister called "The Eleven," was "the grit of the set," he says. "'Dark Star' was this little ditty written a couple of years earlier. Jerry probably pulled it out in a jam one night, and it took on a whole other aspect. You can hear it here, night after night, going through different progressions."

The jamming extremes of Live/Dead marked the end of an era. The band was soon writing songs for the 1970 acid-cowboy classic Workingman's Dead. But onstage in 1969, Weir says, "we knew we were on to something." The only glaring exception on the ten CDs, he admits, is an encore of the Beatles' "Hey Jude" from the third night, in which Ron "Pigpen" McKernan sings wildly out of tune. "He was pretty safely into his cups," Weir says, laughing. "But there is a fearlessness you have to bring to a project like this. Not many fans will want to hear that, but you have to call a spade a spade."

Jerry Garcia Jerry Garcia
Garcia Plays Dylan
Year: 2005
Record Label: Rhino
Style: Blues

Review:
The legend of Jerry Garcia continues to grow with the passing of time. As more recordings are unearthed and issued remastered, it becomes more apparent than ever that the man was a guitar genius. Personally, I had not delved too far into the Grateful Dead (although I saw them live while I was living in California) catalog or Garcia’s solo work. Now that I have had the opportunity to hear Garcia Plays Dylan and The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 1: Legion of Mary it comes as no surprise to me that Jerry has a new fan onboard.

Garcia Plays Dylan is a superb representation of some of the best tracks from the Dylan catalog. What makes this entire set so enjoyable is the improvisation that you could always count on at live Dead or Garcia show. It does not take long before you forget that what you are hearing is Dylan songs. Jerry was masterful at taking anyone’s music and making it his own. He offered a veritable smorgasbord of blues, rock, bluegrass, and jazz all rolled into one big musical platter of tasty delights. The remastering of the original tapes taken from live shows is superb. The sound is outstanding, Garcia’s guitar, while never wavering, sounds crisp and biting, and the rest of the instruments are equally amazing.

“Tangled Up In Blue” was the standout track for my ears, the jamming that goes on is out of this world, and the backup singers do a fine job giving it a more of soulful sound than the original. I have to hand it to one of my favorite all time labels, Rhino, they consistently deliver the goods, and it does not seem to matter what artist they are covering. The sound quality, artwork, and liner notes are always first class.

If you think you would enjoy this set then I have another one for you, The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 1: Legion of Mary. It is an incredible live two CD set as well, that features the rock fusion of Garcia and his band at the height of their powers. Both of these sets are worthwhile purchases and surely, you will enjoy them for years to come, after all, there is always something new to discover while listening, no matter how many times you have heard it.

The reason that you are seeing so many releases come pouring out is that Garcia lived to play and played to live, period. And we all thank him for that. I am glad the live recordings where done so freely over the years, and it is because the bands associated with Garcia were cool about it. I do not expect the flow of live material to stop, considering all the shows that the Dead and Jerry played before he died. I am sure when Dylan heard this he was quite pleased.

Grateful Dead
