Pricey box sets containing official bootleg CDs of all the stops on the Who's 2004 tour will be available from online retailer TheMusic.com starting Friday. A deluxe edition -- packaged in a mini imitation road case and including a card signed by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, as well as a tour program -- will sell for about $815. A less expensive set featuring simpler packaging and excluding the autographed card will go for around $450.

Who's Coming Back To Australia

The Who have vowed to come back to Australia soon to make up for the 36 year gap between visits.

At the Melbourne show on Saturday night Pete Townshend told the audience "I was 36 years in the other penal colony and for some of those years I wasn't even pissed". He then added "Let's go out for a few beers after the show" to which Roger Daltrey responded "This is Australia. They don't know what a few beers is".

Townshend later stated his connection during his absence was his movie White City, directed by Melbourne's Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein also directed the Michael Hutchence movie 'Dogs In Space'. Pete explained how he met Michael through Richard and they became close friends.

Townshend was in banter mode. He later dedicated 'The Kids Are Alright' to all the children of the audience members who had been born since 1968.

For many Who fans, it has been a long wait but the band did not disappoint. After opening with a trio of 60's hits (I Can't Explain, Substitute and Anyway Anyhow Anywhere), they threw in two from their classic Who's Next album

Who's who of drumming

The Who's drummer Zak Starkey hadn't even picked up a drumstick when the legendary rock band last toured here.

"I was three," the musician said abruptly after arriving in Sydney yesterday for the band's first concerts in Australia since 1968.

The son of the Beatles' drummer, Ringo Starr, has been realizing a childhood dream since he joined the Who in the mid-1990s.

Rock 'n' roll myth has it that Who drummer Keith Moon gave Starkey one of his first professional kits.

Keith used to be a kind of musical godfather to him, Pete Townshend has said.

Starkey would sit at the kit wearing headphones, drumming along to his favorite albums, including those by the Who.

"Playing with the Who is the biggest rush there is. At 11 years old, I used to go to bed dreaming about what I'm doing now. I don't know how many people can say that," Starkey said in 1997.

Starkey more than paid his dues before being invited to join rock royalty.

Performing in pubs by the age of 12, he formed his first band, garage rockers the Next, in his teens and recorded his first studio session with the Spencer Davis Group at 17.

Cincinnati lifts Who-inspired festival seating ban

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The city council on Wednesday lifted a nearly 25-year ban on concert general admission seating that was imposed after 11 fans were crushed to death at a performance by the rock group The Who. The unanimous decision came after council members said some performers were skipping Cincinnati because they could not have general admission seating, often known as festival seating. They said Cincinnati was the only one among the top 50 cities for concert venues that did not allow festival seating. The fans were killed December 3, 1979, when The Who was preparing for a concert at Riverfront Coliseum, now U.S. Bank Arena. The deaths and dozens of injuries occurred when fans rushed at closed doors during a late sound check because they thought the show had started. (AP)

Друзья! Помогите, пожалуйста! Я НИГДЕ не могу найти антологию The Who на мр3:-(((( Живу в Кишиневе, но был и в Москве, искал на Горбушке, все, что там есть - диск с 6 или 7 альбомами. Там не все то, что мне нужно.
Я думаю, что у кого-нибудь из вас есть все альбомы. Если кому-то не жалко нагрузить свой пишущий сидюк и одной болванки...
В общем, по почте посылать наверняка не надо! Можно передать через проводника поезда, а я ему здесь заплачУ сколько полагается:-)

У меня все есть на кассетах, но это уже невозможно слушать...ферромагнитная пленка, сами понимаете. А на мр3 есть только Томми, при всем его великолепии...этого маловато!

Мнэээ..не подумайте, что я выпрашиваю...нашел бы на Горбушке - купил бы.
А так пришлось довольствоваться Йес, Криденс, Ван Хален и Деф Леппард:-))))

The Who Finish World Tour

The Who wrapped up the final show on their Then and Now world tour in Los Angeles on Monday (August 9).

The tour promoted their latest album Then and Now, a best of with two news songs. The songs 'Old Red Wine' and 'Real Good Looking Boy' are the first new material from The Who since 1982.

Every night of the Then and Now tour was recorded live with discs from each show made available immediately after the show and for 500 fans, the chance to purchase all 17 shows as a boxed set from The Who's website.

Townshend Site to Host Streaming TV Station

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Who songwriter/guitarist Pete Townshend's official Web site (http://www.petetownshend.co.uk) will soon play host to a streaming TV station dubbed "Who TV."

The system has been tested in recent months with a live Who rehearsal and performances by Townshend-mentored singer/songwriter Rachel Fuller, but, according to a note on the site, "as of next week ... its use will be more varied."

"We've developed three areas to the 'studio' which allow us to broadcast live performances from inside and outside the building," the site says, "an area that lets us prepare and broadcast pre-recorded and/or commercially available material and a 'Vox Box' where people can just go and sit in front of a camera and say whatever they feel, maybe even crack a few jokes!"

"Much of the live and Vox Box material with be unscheduled and unscripted -- some will be recorded and looped and others will be real one-offs -- shown only the one time," the post continues. "Some other events will be publicized in advance."

For now, access to the content is free, but the site says, "for BIG events, of which a few are planned over the next year, there may well be a need to charge -- either with a one-off payment or by subscription -- to view."

The Who recently wrapped a summer tour and is expected to continue work on what may constitute the group's first studio album since 1982's "It's Hard."

In related news, Who vocalist Roger Daltrey will join David Crosby, former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts, E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren and Poison's Bret Michaels at the fourth Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. The event takes place Feb. 17-21 in Los Angeles.

Но я посчитал нужным и здесь проанонсировать, поскольку Саймон Филлипс играл с The WHO в 1989 году во время их реньюниона 7 лет спустя после прощального тура 1982 года, что потом вышло на официальном концертнике The WHO: "Join Together" - 1990, а также играл с Питом Тауншендом на его сольнике: "The Iron Man" - 1989.

Who guitarist Pete Townshend soon will issue an expanded two-CD version of Deep End Live! as the next release off his "Signature" series. The concert album was recorded at a pair of sold-out November 1985 performances in London. Pink Floyd's David Gilmour was among Townshend's backing musicians at the shows. Daltrey sings for a new generation

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- It's almost 40 years since Roger Daltrey first hollered, "Hope I die before I get old" and captured the anger and frustration of his generation.

But it is only now, at the age of 60, and 10 times a grandfather, that life is making sense for the front man of the legendary British rock band The Who.

Daltrey, whose onstage charisma powered The Who to fame in the 1960s and '70s as much as Pete Townshend's caustic lyrics and furious guitar chords, has just made his first video/DVD for tiny tots.

Daltrey, better known for his microphone-twirling performances before thousands of screaming fans, provides the singing and speaking voice for a friendly green dragon on an animated "The Wheels on the Bus" video for an independent California production company.

"Having had children, and now grandchildren, it all sounded like a great idea. Yeah, 10 grandchildren. It's just fantastic. Finally life is starting to make a bit of sense," Daltrey told Reuters in an interview.

He admits that the gentle pre-school video animation of the classic children's song is a new departure for a singer whose band is best known for smashing up its instruments and playing at deafening volume.

"I don't see Roger Daltrey as anything other than an every day human being. I've never been over-protective about the image side of the rock 'n' roll business. That leaves you at the age of 40," Daltrey laughed.

"To me all that's left is the music you play, and in that sense The Who is as powerful now as it ever was."

The kids are all right
In a Who career marked by break-ups, solo projects and triumphant reunions, Daltrey has added many more strings to his bow.

He has worked as an actor and more recently used rock music to raise funds for sick children's charities in Britain.

"Our business was founded on the back of teenagers so it's good to put something back," he said.

"The Wheels on the Bus" video came to him through friends and he was drawn to the idea of involvement in "harmless entertainment" for two to four-year-olds.

It was also "a great way of introducing music to a whole new generation of kids -- maybe even the grandchildren of teenagers that grew up listening to The Who."

The original Who line-up is now down to Daltrey and Townshend after the deaths of drummer Keith Moon in 1978 and bassist John Entwistle in 2002.

After years of talking about it, Daltrey and Townshend are getting back together in December to work on what could be The Who's first studio album since 1982's "It's Hard."

Townshend's working title is "Who2," which he describes in a Web site posting as "only partly tongue in cheek."

Daltrey is excited by the prospect but recognizes that recording as The Who again will be odd.

"There is only Pete and I left. First thing we're going to be doing is him and I going in and making music just together. Then we're going to get our stage band together and work around involving them in whatever that band creates, which is a different thing again."

Daltrey attributes the continuing popularity of The Who to Townshend's "totally unique" style of music rather than his own sexually charged live performances.

"I can't be objective about my role. I've never seen me. And I've never seen The Who. There is an energy in The Who's music which is undeniable but that is in the writing," he said.

With a growing clutch of old rock stars refusing, as The Who sang in "My Generation," to "f-fade away," Daltrey looks to the next 10 years with equanimity.

"Who knows what we're going to be like when we're 70? In a bath chair on the seafront at Eastbourne?" he laughed.

"I'm hoping I will be very happy in the bath chair if that's how it has to be. But I'm hoping not. Music lives inside of me. I don't ever feel happier than when I'm performing."
