------------------------------

Greetings!

I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that the Ebbetts laboratories are churning, working on the next batch of releases and upgrades. I'd like to take this opportunity to let you know that the next official announcement will happen on Monday, March 20, 2006.

Here is a brief synopsis of what you can expect at that time:

* At least six new blue box Beatles remasters
* At least one new American Beatles title
* At least one solo Beatles release
* At least three upgrades
* At least one non-Beatles title

How's that for vague?

Of course, this can (and most likely will) change.
I just thought you should know where we are.

(This ends the mass mailer)

Be well,

D

1) HELP! UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)

2) RUBBER SOUL UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)

3) PLEASE PLEASE ME UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)
4) WITH THE BEATLES UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)
5) BEATLES FOR SALE UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)
6) SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)

7) На некоторых Parlophone-овских Битловских дисках возможна ошибка в печати на дисках: вместо "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" там будет "MADE IN GREAT BRITIAN".

8) BEATLES FOR SALE UK STEREO (BLUE BOX REMASTER)

Таким образом, Вы должны послать запрос на замену только в случае "Rubber Soul Upside Down", "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" и "Beatles For Sale insert".

Capitol...

**************************

1. THE BEATLES (UK Stereo LP) (BLUE BOX REMASTER) (2 DISC SET) (WITH FOUR PHOTOS) PCS 7067/7068
2. YELLOW SUBMARINE (UK Stereo LP) (BLUE BOX REMASTER) PCS 7070
3. ABBEY ROAD (UK Stereo LP) (BLUE BOX REMASTER) PCS 7088
4. LET IT BE (UK Stereo LP) (BLUE BOX REMASTER) PCS 7069

The trend has continued. THE most requested project for the Dr. Ebbetts Sound System is STILL the remastering of the famed BLUE BOX set released from Decmeber, 1978. As I have written several times before, for many, this set offers what is considered to be among the best representation of the original UK stereo releases. Therefore, Ebbetts concludes the "stagger release” of the original UK stereo LPs from the BLUE BOX set (save for Rarities) with today’s announcement.

It is VERY necessary for me to point out, as I did in my last announcement, that the LPs from which these new masters are sourced were supplied to me by a very good friend to the Ebbetts project – a VERY patient and valued friend. There are many, many NEW people part of this project now, so this next paragraph will ONCE AGAIN explain how this BLUE BOX REMASTERS series works. If you already have it down - and I suspect that most of you do - please feel free to skip this. This is simply a run through for those who may not know how it works or those who may need a refresher. The Ebbetts catalogue has always offered both the MOBILE FIDELITY and ORIGINAL UK STEREO versions of the British titles. Indeed, up until December of last year, the audio used in each of these sets were identical. The only thing that differentiated, for example, the MFSL version of “Please Please Me” from the standard UK issue of the same title in the Ebbetts catalogue was the artwork. Otherwise, the two were identical. That changed with the Decmeber, 2005 Dr. Ebbetts announcement. Continuing with today's announcement, the MFSL audio masters will stay exactly as they have been, sourced from the actual MFSL vinyl releases. However, the standard UK stereo issues, complete with the original artwork, will slowly be phased in to have the BLUE BOX transfers used as their source material. To many, the MFSL CDs are the best sounding releases around … but to others, they are too bright with a bit too much EQ on either end of the spectrum, as applied by the geniuses who master these things. To many, the BLUE BOX releases are smoother and more natural sounding and better represent the Beatles recorded work. That’s up to you, of course, but soon, the BLUE BOX will stand to represent the original stereo UK titles. These are NOT upgrades, unfortunately. These are brand new titles. HOWEVER, once the BLUE BOX set is complete, the MFSL set will be redone, complete with new artwork. Those upgrades will definitely be free. But that’s for another time.

These new BLUE BOX releases replicate with FAR MORE accuracy, the artwork of the original releases, right down to the EMITEX logo on the back. Many of you have older version of the artwork and will need these. Even if you do have the new artwork, the audio is brand new.

5. THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL (US mono LP) (GENUINE ACETATE MIX) TAO 2222

As many of you know, Ebbetts currently offers a title in the catalogue called "The Beatles Live At The Hollywood Bowl (Capitol Project)." This title was meant to represent the "infamous" Capitol Records project that never came to be - namely, the release of a Beatles live album that featured the band's performace in August, 1964 at the Hollywood Bowl. As is now well-known, this proposed release was given a project number by the powers-that-be at Capitol. An actual monophonic acetate was made of this performance! Sadly, the whole thing was eventually shelved. As many of you also know, Ebbetts decided to bring this never-completed idea to life by utilizing the suggested artwork from Bruce Spizer's remarkable book on the history of the Beatles on Capitol Records and compiling the best sounding source material. What eventually came about was a very popular addition to the Ebbetts catalogue. Unfortunately, even with its popularity, this title has always "bugged" me a bit - as well as many others along the way. While it did offer a stereophonic version of the COMPLETE performance with detailed Ebbetts labelling and artwork, it wasn't a TRUE representation of the project as created by Capitol. (I have been reminded of this fact more times than I care to recount). The original acetate was edited to exclude much of the chatter and dead space and made to sound a bit tighter. Some slight reverb was also applied to the original acetate to enhance the "live" feel. None of these specifications were evident on the original Ebbetts stereo release of this title.

That's where THIS release comes in.

Using the original Capitol acetate as a guide, this release replicates EVERY detail of the original. It has been edited PRECISELY as the acetate was, and with the help of several people who are not only Beatle afficianados, but PROFOUNDLY knowledgeable with sound and effects, the reverb has been replicated. This MONO TYPE-B mix was created exactly as the Capitol acetate was. This is how this project should have been released by Ebbetts originally. The artwork will look the same as the current stereo version.

Eventually, a true STEREO version of this acetate edit will be released as a new title by Ebbetts. At that time, the current incarnation of the complete unedited stereo show will be discontinued, but offered as a FREE UPGRADE with brand new artwork. (That will be explained in further detail when the time comes. Just a little heads up).

6. THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ... AGAIN (US stereo LP) STAO 6508

Okay ... So what's this? "Live At The Hollywood Bowl ... Again?" Huh?

Well, not unlike the Ebbetts attempt to present the famed Rooftop Concert in a tighter, more presentable way, attempting to envision how Apple *might* have issued such a thing (Last Licks Live), so has Ebbetts done with the Beatles' performance of August 30, 1965 at the Hollywood Bowl. This release is the logical follow up to the "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" project from 1964.

This recording is not quite as good as the 1964 show - both in terms of actual sound quality and (subjectively) in several of the performances. Performance wise, John isn't really at his best - except for perhaps, Dizzy Miss Lizzie, which sounds okay. And take note of the second chorus run-through of "I'm Down." Paul, while sounding good vocally, is about a fourth of a bar ahead of the band (Actually, the band came in too late initially ... whatever). It sounds quite bizarre. That's what you get when you have no "fold back" speakers.

Sound quality-wise, this release is chuck-full of good old fashioned analogue tape hiss - bestill my heart. (I HATE noise reduction). However, I do believe that this recording is among the best sounding of this particular performance. The artwork is completely original, made to replicate (for the most) the general style of the time. The audio contained here is NOT the complete unedited 1965 show - which Ebbetts will eventually make available - but is, instead, a carefully edited version made to represent what such an album *might* have sounded like had Capitol released it, very much in the spirit of the 1964 acetate. Much of the chatter is edited and the presentation is tighter.

7. THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ... AGAIN (US mono LP) TAO 6508

You are correct. This is a simple TYPE-B Mono mix of the stereo show listed above ... This isn't mandatory for your collection, if you're getting the stereo - or perhaps, vice versa. This is really for the completists only. I may even discontinue it at some point. A very very SLIGHT touch of reverb was added to the mono mix - otherwise it sounds almost identical to the stereo release.

There is ONE thing different that was really not done INTENTIONALLY. (I mean that). The spoken introduction by George Harrison on the song "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" is seven seconds longer on the mono version than the stereo. While editing out chatter and miscellaneous space - which, for some reason, I did separately to each mix rather than to the stereo mix first BEFORE creating the Type-B mono - I obviously missed something. Sorry about that.

8. ABBEY ROAD (Brazilian mono LP) BTL 1008

This title has LONG been on my wish list of LPs to transfer. This is the actual mono issue of an album that was never officially mixed for mono. That means it is a straight Mono Type-B fold-in. In fact, according to several of the more well-versed Beatle people out there, the master for this mono LP was actually created by simply collapsing the American stereo master into mono. According to the experts (of which I do NOT include myself) there was no reverb or anything added - just a straight fold.

(FYI - The last three titles of the original AMERICAN Beatles LP catalogue - Abbey Road, Let It Be and Hey Jude - were released in Brazil in Type-B mono).

I have to thank one specific individual who supplied me with two pressings of this LP. (He knows who he is). Ironically, I wound up NOT using any of them because they were simply too noisy. He went through a LOT of trouble tracking these down for me. I thank him profusely. Obviously, the fact that I couldn't use his LPs is not HIS fault - but it did motivate me to find a gorgeous copy for transfer. I went ahead and sold one of my kids for the opportunity to simply BORROW a near mint pressing of this LP from a friend who owes me a few favors. It really sounds punchy and clean. Please note that this mono version of Abbey Road plays back a touch slower than all other versions I've ever heard. It's uniform on all THREE copies I had the privelage to work with.

The artwork matches the originla Brazilian LP.

9. LET IT BE (Brazilian mono LP) BTL 1013

Also, one of the Brazilian mono releases employing fold-in mono. This one, however, plays back at "regular" speed, like all stereo versions I've heard. Again, a surprisingly clean and punchy version of this LP. The artwork, of course, replicates the original Brazilian release.

******************************

1. THE WHO - TOMMY (US stereo LP) (2 DISC SET) DXSW 7205

Sourced from a first pressing of the original US LP - said to be the best sounding issue by several WHO people who advised me during this process - this is one I'm particularly proud of. It was a labor love. The commercial CD of the original mix is quite bright and harsh in places. This is a welcome addition to the Ebbetts WHO catalogue, which has seen MAJOR upgrades over the past two years - including today's "Sell Out" stereo upgrade. All of the WHO LPs are now upgraded.

I MUST thank a VERY special friend from Norway for supplying me with an UNOPENED pressing of this classic album for use in the Ebbetts project. I'm simply not sure I would have sacrificed such a thing myself. There aren't enough words to show my gratitude. (You know who you are).

The artwork on these two discs is inclusive of as much of the LP artwork as possible. Indeed, all of the audio could have fit onto ONE disc, but much of the LP art would have been neglected that way. The inside pages of each of the two CD booklets have different layouts, taken from the original multi-fold LP jacket cover.

2. THE WHO - WHO'S MISSING (US LP) MCA 5641

A collection of Who rarities released in 1985. A favorite of Who fans. This one is sourced from the original MCA LP - warm and exquisite.

3. SIMON AND GARFUNKEL - BOOKENDS (US mono LP) KCL 2729

This one is sourced from a genuine stock copy of the much sought after American mono LP, which featured several unique mono mixes of songs such as Mrs. Robinson and At The Zoo. Unfortunately, I could NOT find a decent copy of the poster that I wanted to accompany this album. When I do, I will release it as a free addition to those who acquired this title from me.

Some correct inserts were sent out, so PLEASE be sure yours is incorrect before requesting this free corrective upgrade.

1. PHIL SPECTOR'S CHRISTMAS ALBUM - A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU FROM PHILLES RECORDS (US STEREO LP) PHLP 4005

Arguably, the most famous Christmas record ever made is this one - certainly since the birth of the rock and roll era. This release features this famous yuletide collection in STEREO. The stereo version of this LP was never released in America, and only found its way onto shelves in Britain later on into the 70s and beyond. The stereo version of this LP was released on Warner Brother Records and Phil Spector's own label (among others). The various pressings I have heard vary widely in terms of sound quality. I have created what I believe is the best sounding version of this LP in stereo.

What I have done is utilize the ORIGINAL Philles Record artwork, creating the stereo release that never was. The original artwork, faithfully reproduced here, features all the performers on the cover, while the later (and perhaps more familiar) 1970s artwork (with Spector dressed as Santa) is on the inside. The CD itself has the original Philles record logo.

And by the way, the song "It's A Marshmellow World" is purposely misspelled. That's exactly how it appeared on the original release - on the LP jacket and on the record itself..

1 darlene love - white christmas 02:58
2 ronettes - frosty the snowman 02:07
3 bob b. soxx and the blue jeans - the bells of st. mary 02:34
4 crystals - santa claus is comin' to town 03:21
5 ronettes - sleigh ride 03:00
6 darlene love - (it's a) marshmellow world 02:26
7 ronettes - i saw mommy kissing santa claus 02:40
8 crystals - rudolph the red-nosed reindeer 02:29
9 darlene love - winter wonderland 02:19
10 crystals - parade of the wooden soldiers 02:52
11 darlene love - christmas (baby please come home) 02:32
12 bob b. soxx and the blue jeans - here comes santa claus 02:04
13 phil spector and artists - silent night 02:09

1) THE RED JAPANESE MONO VINYL COLLECTION – OR SIMPLY PUT, THE “RED MONOS.” THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONS TO THE EBBETTS CANON ARE SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL SERIES 1982 JAPANESE RED MONO VINYL LPs, CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE AMONG THE VERY BEST REPRESENTATIONS OF THE BEATLES ORIGINAL MONO CATALOGUE. ALL BUT TWO OF THE TEN TITLES THAT COMPRISE THIS SET ARE INCLUDED HERE. THE REMAINING TWO TITLES WILL BE RELEASED VERY SOON.

2) THE DECCA AUDITION (UK MONO LP) – PCS 6211
This release will not count as an upgrade to the “New Year’s Day” CD in this catalogue, although on the surface, it probably should. As per my last mass-mailer, this will be one of those titles that should, by all reasonable interpretations of the Ebbetts project’s rules and regulations, count as an upgrade … but it isn’t. I do apologize for that, but as I explained at the time, I do need to exercise SOME financial smarts here. (These free upgrades are a touch taxing). Therefore, this NEW interpretation of the Beatles’ audition for Decca Records on January 1, 1962 is here!

What makes this so different from the original “New Year’s Day” compilation? Well, 14 out of the 15 songs on this CD are sourced directly from the highly touted Deccagone 45 singles - widely considered to be not only the best sounding versions of these songs, but the most complete. I was fortunate enough to secure the complete seven record set of these colored-vinyl singles last year, in marvelous condition. Indeed, they sound better than any other versions of the songs I have ever heard – better even than Anthology. For those Beatle folks deeply into minutae, these recordings are “complete” – meaning they have the fractions of seconds of extra “chatter” and studio noise “absent” from most other versions.

While the inside artwork is essentially the same as the “New Year’s Day” compilation, I have created brand new front artwork for this title. It is on the “Apple” label.

By the way, the 15th song not included in the Deccagone collection – “Take Good Care Of My baby” - was sourced from a bootleg vinyl source I have that has the best and closest sound to the other 14.

3) THE BEATLES GREATEST (DUTCH STEREO LP) – OHMS 3001
This release, too, looks like it could be – or should be – an Ebbetts upgrade. Alas, it isn’t. This title is sourced from a gorgeous copy of the Dutch version of this LP. This pressing differs from the German version of this LP already in my catalogue. First off, this LP contains the version of “I Feel Fine” with the famous “whispering” at the beginning of the song – the first time it’s been available on an Ebbetts release. Additionally, “I Feel Fine” is MUCH LESS echoey than the version on the German LP too. “All My Loving” does NOT have the hi-hat intro heard on the German LP. According to several of the people who help me with quality control of the Ebbetts releases, this LP isn’t as “open” sounding as the German one.

4) THE BEATLES LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL (Capitol Acetate Edit) (US STEREO LP) – STAO-2222
Just like the Ebbetts mono release of this title more than a year ago, this CD replicates the original Capitol Records edit of the album that never was – that is, the Beatles’ 1964 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl - only this time in glorious STEREO. This improves considerably on the now defunct Ebbetts release of the unedited 1964 Hollywood Bowl show.

5) JOHN LENNON - IMAGINE (US STEREO LP) – SW 3379
Continuing in the Ebbetts solo-Beatle catalogue tradition, I give you Lennon’s classic “Imagine” LP, sourced from an UNOPENED original Apple pressing of the albumP. I purchased two sealed copies of the LP at the time off of E-Bay, because I just couldn’t stand the idea of opening up a 36 year old sealed album. (I’m funny that way). It was flawless. It comes complete with the “Ram” parody post card insert.

6) PAUL McCARTNEY - McCARTNEY (US STEREO LP) – SMAS 3363
This is, of course, Paul’s first solo effort. This, too, was taken from a still sealed first pressing LP. However, this was a cut-out LP, so I didn’t feel too bad opening it up. Again, a flawless transfer.
