Ремастированные битловские альбомы от Dr.Ebbetts

Недавно мне пришли практически все стерео-варианты, записанные добрым Доктором. Это так называемая технология нидл-дроп (needle drop), т.е. перепись с винила на цифру в домашних, а в данном случае профессиональных условиях.
Судя по всему используется великолепный нетронутый винил, отличные цифровые платы, головки Градо по 2000 долларов, усилители. В общем самое лучшее из имеющегося в продаже.
Кроме доброго Доктора, то же самое делает Mirror Spock (который тоже выпустил целый ряд дисков, которые считаются специалистами даже иногда лучше, чем докторские) и Faboulous Sound Labs, которые выпустили всю свою продукцию в формате HDCD, в общем прекрасная возможность "напрячь ухо" и попытаться определить где лучше звучит.
Я начал со стерео, ибо нельзя объять всего, иначе "замылится" слух.
Пока то, что я слышал находится на очень хорошем уровне: не хуже японских выпусков последних лет.

А вообще трудно сказать, что лучше что хуже. В-основном, различия в разделении каналов, частотке. Одно могу сказать, практически ВСЕ, и Эббетта, и Millennium Remasters, и Mirror Spock, и DLH ОЧЕНЬ приятно слушать.

Rounding out the Ebbetts US catalog, this title is sourced from an original first issue LP. This release completes the original Capitol/Apple US catalog from Ebbetts.

LAST LICKS LIVE – THE ROOFTOP CONCERT (UK mono LP)

I wanted a fantastic sounding version of the famed rooftop show, void of the lengthy in-between chatter, without the occasional sound anomalies (like volume fluctuations, for example), in a nice concise package. I believe this is it. It was sourced from several CDs in an attempt to create the best sounding collection. It’s a nice companion to the “First Concert” and “Hollywood Bowl” CDs in the Ebbetts collection.

YELLOW SUBMARINE (Soundtrack) (TRUE UK mono LP)

This title follows the track listing of the Yellow Submarine Songtrack released by EMI a few years back. However, this collection utilizes the TRUE mono mixes of each song. Included are the NEVER OFFICIALLY RELEASED mono mixes of the songs from Yellow Submarine, like the long version of “It’s All Too Much” and the extended “All You Need Is Love” with an extra chorus and without a fade out. Also included is the version of “Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds” featuring the voice of Dick Emery (‘Boob” in the film) doing the first verse. The rest of the songtrack features the true mono mixes “lifted” from other Ebbetts releases. This is the way the mono version of this LP should be.

HOTTEST HITS (Danish mono LP)

This one was one of the most requested titles, oddly enough. Perhaps it was for the artwork, I don’t know. The mixes are not unique, but the pressing used for this particular title yielded terrific results. As always, the unusual “foreign” releases (non US or UK titles) draw lots of enthusiasm. Viva Denmark!

BEATLEMANIA WITH THE BEATLES (Canadian stereo LP) (narrow mix)

Okay, it’s not the much heralded wide mix of this album, but it is a great sounding LP nonetheless. In fact, the first seven songs appear to be good old fashioned true stereo – sounding quite excellent. The last seven songs are in stereo, but the separation is much narrower – hence, the name. The sound is great. Sourced from an unopened copy of the LP.

LONG TALL SALLY (Canadian stereo LP)

The word “stereo” is just about as inappropriate as it can be here. The entire LP, save for two tracks, is in mono. The album sounds great – better than the official mono release – but mono nonetheless. The two songs in stereo are “Please Mister Postman” (a narrower mix) and “You Can’t Do That.”

TWIST AND SHOUT (Canadian stereo LP)

This one could be accurately called “half and half.” The first seven tracks are in true mono, while the last seven tracks are in stereo (P.S. I Love You is in duophonic stereo).

REVOLVER (UK mono LP)

Okay, okay … How exactly is this new? Well, it occurred to me that I really didn’t have the complete UK catalog because there were actually two versions of the UK mono Revolver released. Up until now, ALL UK mono versions of this LP put out by me have included the famed mono matrix mix of Tomorrow Never Knows (RM11). This mix was available only on the earliest pressings of the mono UK version of this album. This is the one I have been using. If you own an Ebbetts Revolver UK mono, you have the original mono matrix XEX 606-1 version. I am now offering (believe it or not, by popular demand) the “standard” UK mono version of the LP with the more common mono mix of “Tomorrow Never Knows” (RM8). I am using the same exact master for the other 13 tracks. Only the last one is “new.” From this point on, ALL CDs will be printed with either the code (XEX606-1) if it contains the original mono matrix mix or (XEX606-2) if it is the new “regular” mono mix. Sorry, this doesn’t qualify as an upgrade.

The audio on each of these titles has improved considerably, having been resourced and re-mastered. The artwork has also been redone to more accurately match the original LPs.

By far, the SECOND most requested item in recent times for addition into the Ebbetts catalogue. This is NOT an upgrade to the previously released “narrow mix” version. (There will be an upgrade to the “narrow mix” version coming soon – a version that actually has BOTH sides mixed narrowly! Please see my earlier e-mail explaining this). This release, however, is the genuine, much-sought after wide mix of the LP, sourced from a near pristine copy of the album provided to me by a great friend to the Dr, Ebbetts project.

RUBBER SOUL (UK Stereo LP) (THE REMIX) PCS 3075rm

By far, the THIRD most requested project for the Ebbetts Sound Systems, the continuation of the famed “remix” series. Following in the footsteps of the exceedingly popular remixes of “Please Please Me” and “With The Beatles” LPs, Ebbetts has decided to tackle the “CENTER-IFICATION” of arguably the greatest album released by The Beatles – Rubber Soul. Like it’s predecessors, this LP has been treated to the Ebbetts “outface” treatment of centering the vocals and bass. This title continues the Ebbetts specialty “black spine” series, which already includes “Please Please Me,” “With The Beatles,” “Last Licks Live” and “Get Back version 2.” The Ebbetts MFSL master recording was used as the source.

A HARD DAY’S NIGHT (UK Stereo LP) PCS 3058 - BLUE BOX REMASTER

By far, THE most requested project for the Dr. Ebbetts Sound System is the remastering of the famed BLUE BOX set released in Decmeber, 1978. To many, this set offers among the best representation of the original UK stereo releases. To that end, Ebbetts has decided to begin “stagger releasing” the original UK stereo LPs from the BLUE BOX set over the course of several months, starting with today’s announcement.

The LPs from which these new masters are sourced are unplayed until now, supplied to me by another very good friend to the Ebbetts project – a VERY patient and valued friend.

Now, let me explain this BLUE BOX project and how it fits into the Ebbetts catalogue..

The Ebbetts catalogue has always offered both the MOBILE FIDELITY and ORIGINAL UK STEREO versions of the British titles. Indeed, up until now, the audio used in each of these sets were identical. The only thing that differentiated, for example, the MFSL version of “Please Please Me” from the standard UK issue of the same title in the Ebbetts catalogue was the artwork. Otherwise, the two were identical. That will now change. Starting today, the MFSL audio masters will stay exactly as they have been, sourced from the actual MFSL vinyl releases. However, the standard UK stereo issues, complete with the original artwork, will slowly be phased in to have the BLUE BOX transfers used as their source material. To many, the MFSL CDs are the best sounding releases around … but to others, they are too bright with a bit too much EQ on either end of the spectrum, as applied by the geniuses who master these things. To many, the BLUE BOX releases are smoother and more natural sounding and better represent the Beatles recorded work. That’s up to you, of course, but over the next few months, the BLUE BOX will stand to represent the original stereo UK titles.

These are NOT upgrades, unfortunately. These are brand new titles. HOWEVER, once the BLUE BOX set is complete, the MFSL set will be redone, complete with new artwork. Those upgrades will definitely be free. But that’s for another time.

These new BLUE BOX releases replicate with FAR MORE accuracy, the artwork of the original releases, right down to the EMITEX logo on the back. Many of you have older version of the artwork and will need these. Even if you do have the new artwork, the audio is brand new.

REVOLVER (UK Stereo LP) PCS 7009 - BLUE BOX REMASTER

The second title from the BLUE BOX remasters to be released. Sweet sounding and one of the Beatles’ best. This release, like “A Hard Day’s Night” above replicates with FAR MORE accuracy, the artwork of the original releases, right down to the EMITEX logo on the back. These are the only two BLUE BOX releases this time around. Next time, there will be at least four.

SOLO BEATLES (2 titles)

PAUL McCARTNEY – RAM (US Mono LP) MAS 3375

This is the first venture out into solo-Beatles territory for Ebbetts. So, it’s only natural to start off with a rarity and one worthy of the Ebbetts treatment. Here is the monophonic version of “Ram,” the famed “promo only” release. While there are some very nice versions of this release floating around with nice packaging and all, most are pretty noisy, with lots of little pops and anomalies from the source material. Ebbetts has tried to remove these anomalies from the four different sources used to create this title. It will hopefully be the standard for this title from now on. Naturally, not an OUNCE of noise reduction is EVER used on Ebbetts releases, and the artwork here faithfully recreates the official stereo release, but only with the monophonic index numbers.

GEORGE HARRISON – ALL THINGS MUST PASS (US Stereo LP) STCH 639 (2 CD set)

As far as Ebbetts is concerned, this second venture into solo-Beatles land was ABSOLUTELY necessary. This is, undoubtedly, a sensational LP that was given absolutely HORRIBLE treatment in its 2001 remastered release. The noise reduction used on the official store bought CD is downright criminal. On several tracks, the cymbals and hi-hats have that most annoying swooshing sound inherent in poorly applied noise reduction. Why do people fear tape hiss so much? Why do these so-called experts wish to eliminate it? The result, on songs like “I Dig Love” is a suffocating, unnatural shame of a crime. Additionally, the so-called EQ applied to the commercial release is very harsh in places. This HAD to be tackled by Ebbetts. This version, complete on two CDs, is taken straight from pristine copies of the original LP.

BOB DYLAN (3 titles)

BOB DYLAN (US mono LP) CL 1779

Three more Dylan mono releases to round out his mono collection in the Ebbetts catalogue (except for “Greatest Hits”). This is Dylan’s debut offering in glorious mono, sourced from the original LP, provided by a very close friend and staunch supporter of the project … and he wants me to know it! Some stunning performances here – just a man, his guitar and harmonica.

ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN (US mono LP) CL 2193

Bob Dylan’s fourth album, released in 1964, contains arguably some of his greatest lyrics in songs like “My Back pages” and “I Shall Be Free - No. 10.” It’s his last acoustic album before he plugged in for 1965’s “Bringing It All Home.” A classic in pure mono.

JOHN WESLEY HARDING (US mono LP) CL 2804

Dylan’s last regular issue mono LP, from 1967. Some of his best harmonic work ever.

THE WHO (2 titles)

This is the mono version of second album released by the Who in Great Britain. Thanks much to “Milk Man” for providing a gorgeous copy of this most RARE UK pressing at the last minute. You definitely rock!!

Let me preface this by saying: I am not always 100% pleased with Ebbetts product. There are 1 or 2 releases I haven't been super happy with, but overall, he's got an incredible track record. The Ebbetts version of the "Let It Be" single on "Past Masters" is the definitive version. So it was with a bit of trepidation I approached this release of "ATMP". It's one of my all-time favorite LPs, so I knew I'd be ultra picky.

So?

He's outdone himself. This is PERFECT. I've had several versions of this one and have been dis-pleased in one way or another. But hearing this was from a third pressing, I thought "uh-oh". But let me displace those fears you may have. Just go to "My Sweet Lord". listen to those beautiful stereo acoustics. The drums in "What Is Life". The horns on "Let It Down". It's damn near perfect as possible. And WARM, geez. A lot of times, folks try to warm tracks by adding bass. Not here, of course. The bass is just right. Amazingly...I have NO complaints.

The only other question one may have is: didn't George himself remix the anniversary "ATMP"? So, isn't that the way he wanted the album??. Well, yes and no. I have to wonder if he listened to late 80s or early 90s copies of the LP, because the master, by that time, was in awful shape and everything was badly coloured with, what seemed like, TONS of reverb thats just not there on the original. Yes, George remixed it, BUT... I believe Capitol/EMI added Noise reduction after the tapes left Georges hands. Read some of his late interviews, and you'll notice in several, he mentions "a little tape hiss is good".

Anyway, all thanks to Doc! Wonderful job, and a Happy New Year to you and everyone at the forum (and special thanks to Ed, BTW!)
