1962, US Soul singer James Brown recorded his legendary 'Live At The Apollo' album. The album was listed at No.24 in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

1963, On the first day of their first foreign tour, The Beatles spent the day in Stockholm, Sweden, recording a performance for a radio program entitled "The Beatles popgrupp fran Liverpool pa besok i Stockholm", (The Beatles pop group from Liverpool visiting Stockholm). The Beatles, enthused by the chance to play before an audience that wasn't screaming, played seven songs, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘From Me to You’ ‘Money’, ‘You Really Got a Hold On Me’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and ‘Twist and Shout.’

1973, John Lennon began litigation against the US government, accusing them of tapping his telephone.

1973, Rolling Stone Keith Richards was fined £205 after admitting having cannabis, Chinese heroin, mandrax tablets and a revolver at his Chelsea home.

1977, Rolling Stone Keith Richards pleaded guilty to possessing heroin to a court in Toronto. He was given a one year suspended sentence and ordered to perform a benefit concert for the blind.

1979, Paul McCartney received a medallion cast in rhodium after being declared the most successful composer of all time. From 1962 to 1978, McCartney had written or co-written 43 songs that had sold over a million copies each.

1981, The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, supported by Van Halen.
1987, Michael Jackson started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Bad', a No.3 hit in the UK.

1987, Sting went to No.1 on the UK album chart with his third solo release 'Nothing Like The Sun.'

1992, Simple Minds started a three-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Glittering Prize 81-92' their 5th UK No.1 LP.

1998, Former Stone Roses lead singer Ian Brown was jailed for 4 months after being found guilty of disorderly behaviour during a flight from Paris to Manchester. Brown had threatened to chop the hands off an air stewardess during a heated exchange.

1998, Spacedust went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with Gym and Tonic. Spacedust were the production duo of Paul Glancey and Duncan Glasson. The track was a cover of Bob Sinclar's single 'Gym and Tonic'

1999, Westlife went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Flying Without Wings'. It made the Irish boy band only the third act to debut at No.1 with their first three singles, B*Witched and Robson and Jerome being the other two.

2001, Kim Gardner former bassist with Ashton Gardner & Dyke died of Cancer. Had the 1971 UK No.3 single 'The Resurrection Shuffle' and Gardner formed 60's band The Birds with guitarist Ron Wood.

2002, American record producer Tom Dowd died of emphysema. He recorded albums by many artists including: Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Derek and the Dominos, Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Cream, Lulu, Chicago, The Allman Brothers Band, The J. Geils Band, Meat Loaf, Sonny & Cher, The Rascals, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters and Otis Redding.

2004, Ronan Keating went to No.1 on the UK album charts with ‘10 Years Of Hits’, the former Boyzone singer’s third No.1 album.

1962 – The Beatles do their first-ever interview, for the radio station at Cleaver and Clatterbridge Hospital. Paul reveals, “John Lennon is the leader of the group.”

1969 – Led Zeppelin play to their largest indoor crowd to date. At the Boston Garden, they perform before a crowd of 17,000 and rake in $45,000. Support comes from the MC5 and Johnny Winter.

1969 – Pink Floyd releases their quadruple-sided monstrosity Ummagumma. Song titles include “The Grand Vizier’s Garden Party,” “Sisyphus, Part IV,” and “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict.” Gruesome.

1974 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Then Came You,” Dionne Warwick & the Spinners. The song is the first No. 1 single for both Warwick and the Spinners.

1978 – At New York’s Bottom Line Club, Keith Richards joins Rockpile for a jam onstage. The day before he had pleaded guilty to heroin possession in Toronto, but was given a one-year suspended sentence.

1991 – Rock promoter Bill Graham dies in a helicopter crash after a Huey Lewis concert in Concord, Calif. He was 60. Among the events produced by Graham were the Live Aid concert, Amnesty International tour and US Festival. At times he managed the careers of the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison and Santana.

1992 – King of the Road Roger Miller dies from throat cancer. The country singer also wrote the Tony Award-winning musical Big River.

1995 – British rocker Cliff Richard receives a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Cliff is reputed to be the favorite singer of the 95-year-old Queen Mother.

2006 – Guitarist Andy Taylor leaves Duran Duran … again. On their MySpace page, the “Rio” band explain, “There is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together.” Taylor first quit the band in 1985.

2006 – Ronnie James Dio announces he’s reuniting with his old Black Sabbath chums–Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward–as Heaven and Hell.

2006 – Kurt Cobain tops Forbes’ list of the top-earning dead rock stars. No. 2 is Courtney Love. Sorry, that should read “Elvis Presley.” The Nirvana singer’s corpse earned $50 million over the past year.

1956 Tommy Steele takes UK rock and roll into chart for the first time with 'Rock with the Cavemen'

1958: Berlin, Germany's first rock and roll concert ever is staged, a performance by Bill Haley and his Comets that ends in chaos when the East Berliners in the crowd of 7,000 begin to fight with the West Berliners. Twenty policemen are injured; one loses his sight permanently.

1959 Bobby Rydell scores first his as 'We Got Love' enters US chart

1959: The Everly Brothers leave their old label, Cadence, for Warner Brothers.

1961 Dave Brubeck Five's 'Take Five' hits UK chart

1961: Bob Dylan signs with Columbia Records, his first recording contract.

1962: The first Motown "revue" tour begins in Washington DC, featuring Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas, the Contours, Stevie Wonder, and the Marvelettes.

1963 Bob Dylan plays Carnegie Hall in New York and writes a special poem for the program notes, called 'My Life in a Stolen Moment'

1964: On the last day of recording their fourth album, Beatles For Sale, the Beatles are visited by rockabilly legend Carl Perkins, an early idol of theirs. The group decides then and there to cover Perkins' "Honey Don't." At one point, Ringo calls the Sun records artists "Mr. Perkins," to which he replies, "Son, I wish you'd just call me Carl. Mr. Perkins is my daddy."

1965: The Beatles receive Members of the British Empire (MBE) medals from Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony staged at Buckingham Palace. It is the first such honor ever given to a rock band, causing many former recipients, many distinguished military personnel, to return their medals in disgust. William Bootsy Collins - сегодня 60! Тинэйджером попал в группу Джеймса Брауна и в неполных 19 лет принял участие в записи Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine, сыграв один из самых запоминающихся фанковых басовых рифов.

1933: Floyd Cramer (Last Date/On the Rebound) was an American Hall of Fame pianist who was one of the architects of the "Nashville Sound." 1991: Jimmy Dean marries his second wife, singer Donna Meade, in Richmond, VA, with the couple singing a duet at their riverboat-hosted reception.

1958: Buddy Holly makes what would be his last major television appearance, lip-synching "It's So Easy" and "Heartbeat" on ABC's American Bandstand.

1961: According to the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, this is the day on which a customer named Raymond Jones entered Epstein's Liverpool record store, NEMS, and requested a copy of the Beatles singing "My Bonnie" (a 45 the group had cut in Hamburg, Germany with singer Tony Sheridan). Epstein, impressed that someone would ask for a record cut by a local group but only available as an import, tracks the band down at the Cavern Club and offers to manage them. Several Liverpool scenesters have since cast doubt on this story, claiming the group was already well-known in town.

Вообще-то он урождённый Brian Robson Rankin. Решил стать гитаристом после того, как услышал, а, возможно, и увидел Buddy Holly. (Хенк, как и Бадди, тоже очкарик). А на его 20-летие диск The Shadows занял первое место в хит-параде. Поздравим же его с круглой датой - 70!
