Exclusive: Rock 'N Roll Treasure RevealedExclusive: Rock 'N Roll Treasure Revealed

The British invasion. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones: Their music, their fashion and their swagger. Rock 'n roll's first super groups took America by storm in the 1960s, changing the cultural landscape of American youth.

Now almost 50 years later, like a mirage emerging from a desert oasis, a Southern California woman has answers to questions that rock 'n roll's fans asked for decades.

"I was just in awe of all these beautiful people," said Patti Daley, 64. "They were just our friends, it was amazing."

The answers lie within boxes that Daley has stored for decades underneath her bed, in her home two hours east of Los Angeles.

Inside the boxes are a treasure trove of old photo albums full of rare Polaroids of icons in rock, plus John Lennon lyrics, and letters and cards from members of the Beatles. These are items the public has never seen, until now.

Perhaps the rarest set of photos she owns are two Polaroids of Paul McCartney playing piano inside Lennon's beach house in 1974. It was their first meeting since the Beatles breakup in 1970.

"It's incredible, incredible, a lot of these things are things we've only read about," said Chris Carter, host of the nationally syndicated radio program "Breakfast with The Beatles."

"I saw a picture of Mickey Dolenz climbing up a hill, a picture of Keith Moon on a shag carpet," added Carter. "You know these are rock icons and these pictures no one has ever seen. And they are not published in 25 Beatles books. These are really first time viewings for these pictures."

Amazingly, Patti's treasure includes more than just photos. She also has handwritten cards from George Harrison and John Lennon, plus personal notes from now legendary recording sessions, all signed by the musicians who were there. But the potential motherload are several song lyrics from Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" recording sessions, including what is believed to be his hand-written lyrics to his only number one song "Whatever Gets You Through the Night."

"I came to acquire those after sessions," Daley remembered. "John would come in and put the lyrics on a podium. And he would just leave them there for me to pick up."

Daley also has a copy of a letter John Lennon sent to record executives in 1976. Although it might not be worth a lot of money to collectors, it's significant historically.

In the letter, Lennon was angry with Capitol Records about the cover art selected for the Beatles' first greatest hits album "Rock 'N Roll Beatles." Among other things, an animated Lennon accuses the record executives of trying to ruin the image of the Beatles.

Daley was the ultimate rock 'n roll insider. She said the love of her life was a well-known session guitarist named Jesse Ed Davis, a man many consider one of the greatest unsung guitar heroes in rock 'n roll.

"He was the most subtle, tasty guitar player when rock and roll was really happening," said Daley. "Everyone loved his playing and sought after him to play on their records."

Legends like all the Beatles, members of the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and more all enlisted Davis' skills on his trademark Fender Telecaster.

Daley said, "I still hear him on the radio, I listen to the old stations, it makes my heart smile."

For more than a decade, she toured the world with Jesse and her young son Billy, not only baring witness to, but also documenting, what is now a legendary time in pop culture.

A mother armed with a Polaroid camera, Patti took candid, one-of-a-kind pictures of icons in rock.

"I just kept my Polaroid camera on me all the time in my purse, and when I'd see a good shot, I'd take them candidly," said Daley.

The photos are incredible: From a young Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts in the early 1970s, to several shots of a care free Ronnie Woods before he joined the Stones, to a series of Beatles photos after the breakup -- many taken during John Lennon's "Lost Weekend."

In 1973, Lennon separated from his wife Yoko Ono and began an 18-month relationship with his secretary May Pang. It was a relationship that Yoko reportedly initiated. And the couple spent quite a bit of time at a rented beach house in Santa Monica. Lennon later referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend."

"It's always desirable to have material from somebody who was part of an inner circle, somebody who was really a witness to history," said Dr. Catherine Williamson, director of Books and Manuscripts at Bonhams & Butterfields auction house in Los Angeles.

Williamson said, if authenticated, Daley's treasure could be highly desirable not only to collectors, but also potentially to museums.

As for Daley, she is not sure what she will do with her treasure. She admits, though, that it was an incredible time in her life, and now she wants to share it with the world.

She said, "I feel very privileged to have met the people I have met and heard the music I have heard."

Newly Released Pics Show Post-Breakup Beatles in LANewly Released Pics Show Post-Breakup Beatles in LA

The images are incredible. They're candid, personal photographs of rock royalty: John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.

They are from the personal collection of Patti Daley, a Southern California woman who has stored them for decades underneath her bed in her home two hours east of Los Angeles. The collection features dozens of photographs of the Beatles post-breakup in the early 1970s.

Inside the photo albums are documented proof of what Beatles fans have only read about in books and magazines: the biggest rock stars in the world were still working, playing and at times even living with each other in Southern California in the early 1970s.

"All of them were very good friends and always kept in touch," said Daley.

Daley was the ultimate rock 'n roll insider. Her boyfriend at the time was Jesse Ed Davis, the go-to guitarist on nearly all the Fab Four's solo albums.

The now 64-year-old Daley said she always carried her camera in her purse, ready to capture the rock icons who drifted in and out of her life.

Often the gathering place for Lennon's crew of musicians and friends was his rented beach house in Santa Monica. Daley captured that era like no other: photos of Ringo Starr leading backgammon games around the pool; Eric Clapton with his then-girlfriend Patti Harrison shooting pool inside the house. She also photographed a young Mickey Dolenz goofing around on the beach, and a picture of legendary "The Who" drummer Keith Moon lying on shag carpet inside the house.

"Keith was one of a kind. I always called him 'Moon the Loon,'" Daley said.

She also has two rare photos of Paul McCartney playing a baby grand piano in Lennon's living room. It was the first meeting between the two musicians since the Beatles breakup in 1970.

"I had gone into the house to use the bathroom," said Daley. "He was playing. It was so full and so beautiful, and I just crouched down and took the shot. But it didn't even faze him."

As for what Daley remembers about that legendary meeting: "I wasn't sitting right there when they were talking. I was always off doing something else. I didn't want to intrude. But I remember it being very pleasant."

Daley's favorite picture is one of Lennon and Harrison at the Troubadour nightclub in west Los Angeles.

"It just shows who they were. John with his rock 'n roll button and George just being his beautiful, spiritual self," said Daley. "And that was his mate. He was just being patient and loving him."

Daley was there during the now-legendary, alcohol-fueled recording sessions for singer Harry Nilsson's "Pussycat" album, a record that Lennon produced.

She has several shots of Ringo Starr during that time, as well as Lennon's then-girlfriend May Pang, who was his constant companion during his 18-month separation from wife Yoko Ono.

"I think John had left and wanted to get away and do something different," remembers Daley. "I know he missed Yoko, but I think he was just letting it out, being with the boys."

To Воробьёв Александр

Saturday April 24 1976

The album Wings At The Speed Of Sound reaches number one in the American charts. Paul, happy with the news, makes an evening visit to John and Yoko's Dakota apartment. By chance, John, eager to watch appearances by Raquel Welch and John Sebastian, the former front man for The Lovin' Spoonful, is watching the NBC TV comedy show Saturday Night Live (transmitted on Channel 4, WNBC between 11:30pm and 1:00am ET), and which also just happens to feature the famous Lorne Michaels' "Beatles Reunion" offer. With both John and Paul watching, Lorne Michaels delivers his legendary speech, unbeknownst to him that two of the ex-Beatles are actually tuned in:

"Hi, I'm Lorne Michaels, the producer of Saturday Night. Right now, we're being seen by approximately 22 million viewers, but please allow me, if I may, to address myself to four very special people ... John, Paul, George and Ringo ... The Beatles. Lately, there have been a lot of rumours to the effect that the four of you might be getting back together, that would be great. In my book, The Beatles are the best thing that ever happened to music. It goes deeper than that, you're not just a musical group, you're a part of us, we grew up with you. It's for this reason that I'm inviting you to come on our show. Now, we've heard and read a lot about personality and legal conflicts that might prevent you guys from re-uniting, that's none of my business. You guys will have to handle that. But it's also been said that no one has yet come up with enough money to satisfy you. Well, if it's money you want, there's no problem here. The National Broadcasting Company authorises me to authorise you a cheque for $3,000. Here can you get a close-up of this?" (Michaels holds a cheque, made payable to The Beatles', close up to the camera.) "As you can see, verifiably, a cheque made out to you ... The Beatles for $3,000. All you have to do is sing three Beatle tunes. 'She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah', that's $1,000 right there. You know the words, and it'll be easy. Like I said, this cheque is made out to The Beatles'. You divide it anyway you want, if you want to give Ringo less that's up to you. I'd rather not get involved. I'm sincere about this. If it helps you to reach a decision to reunite well, it's a worthwhile investment. You have agents, you know where I can be reached. Just think about it, OK? Thank you."

John recalls the evening: "Paul was visiting us at our place in the Dakota with Linda. He and I were watching it and we went ha-ha, wouldn't it be funny if we went down and we almost went down to the studio, just as a gag. We nearly got into the cab, but we were actually too tired."

Paul and Linda leave the Dakota apartment as John and Yoko begin watching the 1960 science-fiction film The Time Machine starring Rod Taylor.

Sunday April 25 1976

Pleased by how well the two of them got on together last night, Paul returns to John's Dakota apartment this evening. Unfortunately, the welcome is not so warming, as John recalls in the September 1980 Playboy interviews: "That was a period when Paul just kept turning up at our door with a guitar. I would let him in, but finally I said to him, 'Please call before you come over. It's not 1956, and turning up at the door isn't the same anymore. You know, just give me a ring.' That upset him, but I didn't mean it badly. I just meant that I was taking care of a baby all day, and some guy turns up at the door with a guitar." Paul departs, unaware that he will never see John again. Paul immediately heads for Dallas, Texas and some Wings rehearsals.
