Tom Petty Receives 16th Grammy Nomination

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2005--Tom Petty received his sixteenth Grammy nomination this morning, just two days after being presented with Billboard's prestigious Century Award at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. Petty's "Square One," featured in Cameron Crowe's film "Elizabethtown," was nominated in the category of Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. This is Petty's first nomination in this category.



Some of Petty's previous Grammy nominations include "Full Moon Fever" (Album of the Year), "Wildflowers" (Best Rock Album), "Learning To Fly" (Best Rock Song), "Into the Great Wide Open" (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal), "Echo" (Best Rock Album), "You Don't Know How it Feels" (Best Male Rock Vocal Performance), "Free Fallin'" (Best Male Rock Vocal Performance), "Traveling Wilburys, Volume One" (Album of the Year), and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, with Stevie Nicks).

In 2006, Petty will release a brand-new solo album, "Highway Companion," and along with his band the Heartbreakers, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their self-titled debut album.

Similarly, although rumors swirled for months that Tom Petty was leaving Warner Bros. Records, his home since 1994, he tells Billboard that his third solo album, 'Highway Companion,' will come out on WB, through Rick Rubin`s American Recordings. Rubin, who has produced Petty albums in the past, moved his label to WB earlier this year. 'Rick talked me into it,' Petty says. Even though the album will be on the American imprint, Rubin will not produce the project. Those honors go to Petty`s former Traveling Wilburys mate Jeff Lynne. 'We`re still working on it,' Petty says. 'We`re just finishing a couple more songs. It should be out by spring or summer.'

Los Angeles and Washington, DC – December 14, 2005 -- Having just been presented with Billboard magazine's prestigious Century Award last week at the Billboard Music Awards, Tom Petty has agreed to return for a second season of his XM Satellite Radio show, "Tom Petty's Buried Treasure," it was announced today by Petty and XM Satellite Radio. XM, the nation's largest satellite radio service with more than 5 million subscribers, will kick off the new season Monday, December 19 at 10AM ET on its deep album rock channel Deep Tracks (XM Channel 40). As with season one, the hour-long, critically-acclaimed weekly radio show will blend landmark songs, offbeat cuts and live-in-concert classics recorded by legendary artists with Petty providing informed and passionate commentary on what is his first love, the music.

“I love doing the show because I can turn people, especially younger people, onto really great, timeless music,” explained Petty. “I buy a lot of old albums, I love the older stuff and I think that’s where my heart is. I go further and further back trying to find stuff I missed, or stuff I always wanted to hear but never really got the chance to. That’s a big part of what ‘Buried Treasure’ is.”

Petty's free-form playlist for "Buried Treasure" includes cuts by artists from Jimi Hendrix to Carl Perkins, the White Stripes to Little Richard, Elmore James to the Beatles, Bob Dylan to Jerry Lee Lewis. New episodes of "Tom Petty's Buried Treasure" premiere on XM's Deep Tracks Mondays at 10AM ET with encore broadcasts airing Wednesdays at 8PM ET and Saturdays at 4AM ET.

“Tom brings to ‘Buried Treasure’ the same deep passion for music that has made him a musical legend,” said Lee Abrams, Chief Creative Officer, XM Satellite Radio. “We are honored to be able to bring him and his musical genius to our listeners in such a compelling way.”

In 2006, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their self-titled debut. This year's North American summer concert tour proved to be one of the most successful in their long career. Without a new CD to promote, they played to sell-out crowds totaling more than 750,000 fans, with one major daily calling them "the best American rock band on the planet." Rolling Stone's glowing article on the success of the tour prompted the headline "Tom Petty Rules the Road," and Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Tom Petty is rock aristocracy."

In addition, "Conversations with Tom Petty," an extensive Q&A book written by Paul Zollo and the first to chronicle Petty's extraordinary life and career, was released in November.

Ух ты, и Tweeter & The Monkey Man был у ТР в передаче! Хороший DJ из него получился бы, правда, комментариев не слышала, может и не получился бы. :-) Хотя, если серьезно, у Тома Петти очень легкий стиль общения с фанатами, вспомнить хотя бы Storytellers. И представление песни "Room At The Top": "This is a song about escapism... It's called Escapism..." и потом "This is a new song... called Room At The Top... Of The Titanic". Группа просто едва сдерживалась от смеха. И еще мне почему-то очень нравится его фраза "I get really scared when it gets quiet like that". Если бы не сообщения от Dave, можно было бы ее отнести и к этому форуму в настоящий момент. Все в оцепененнии, ожидая выход нового альбома?

Да, славный сборник мог бы бвыйти.

А какие из этих песен Вы слышали? В старых программах для меня побольше знакомых песен было, здесь же, кроме песен Тома Петти и Heartbreakers, ни одной знакомой. Несколько знакомых имен (чьи песни - но другие - я слышала), а так ничего мне известного. Так что про хороший сборник я так сказала, из уверенности, что Том Петти плохого не предложит. :-)

Вот и я из этих соображений :)

Жаль... а то мне интересно, почему Том Петти не смог ограничиться одной песней в исполнении Booker T & The MG's, Lightning Hopkins и Otis Redding, решил аж по две прокрутить за час. На нашем радио такое бы вряд ли позволили. Как говорится, it's good to be king, хотя бы в своей области. :-)

А сборник шикарный получился... Для начала оказалось, что есть заставка - небольшая песенка, которую поет Том Петти - "Buried treasure, I am looking for buried treasure". Очень милая и очень Хартбрейкеровская. Дальше, песню Santa Clause Wants Some Lovin'исполнял Mack Rice. TP увлекся комментариями (Мол, что все give, Santa, give, а ему и самому любви хочется) и забыл ее представить. Да и не после каждой песни он в эфир выходит, после пяти. И одним махом представляет все, что уже прозвучали (или наперед объявляет). Соответственно,
некоторые пести остаются без зкомментариев. Но все равно здорово! Про две песни Отиса Реддинга ТР не смущаясь сказал, что хочет выдать большую дозу Big O сегодня. Из песен мне больше всего понравились первая - Detrit Junior, Al Green, и очень интересно звучал Хендрикс. Ну и, разумеется, песни в исполнении Тома Петти и Heartbreakers. Little Red Rooster была взята со сборника A Very Special Christmas 5. И вообще все шоу воспринимается очень хорошо. Это же сколько любымых песен можно в эфир запустить! Интересно, они живьем вещают? Сомнительно, чтобы Том Петти смог рано встать, даже ради радио шоу. Хотя, может его привычки изменились. :-)

The music of rebellion has evolved since classic rock days – punk, neopunk, alternative, grunge, indie rock, and who can keep up with the rest?

But a group of Southern Mississippi students and fans, in Lafayette to see the New Orleans Bowl game, reached back to arena days to make a point. During the game, they held up signs, each bearing a few words, that spelled out this message: “Take It From Tom Petty, U Don’t Have To Live Like A Refugee.”

The students – Clayton Gaskin, Andrea Noll, Jodey Hall, Alicia Fitzgerald, Pat Heidingsfelder and Josh Farnsworth – know something about being refugees. Each comes from a town on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Each has had to cope with Hurricane Katrina’s devastation.

How much damage did their homes sustain?

“Basically, all of us lost everything,” Farnsworth said.

The worst part for Noll has been “every weekend having to come home to just rubble.”

So a football game probably seems pointless after so many real-life dramas, right?

“This is probably the greatest thing that can happen to Southern Mississippi right now,” Farnsworth said.

Farnsworth thinks Katrina brought out the best and the worst in people.

“Arkansas State and Southern Miss being able to meet here in Lafayette, after what happened in New Orleans – it brought out the best in people,” he said. “The hospitality has been great.”

Что-то затянулось молчание на форуме. Все в новогодних хлопотах? Предлагаю тему - в каких клипах других музыкантов появлялся Том Петти или кто-либо еще из Heartbreakers? А то будут лежать сборники в магазине, а мы мимо пройдем, если не составим достойный список. :-)
