A club where Ringo Starr performed one of his first concerts with The Beatles has burnt down.
A fire at the former Kingsway club in Southport, England broke out on Monday evening. At its peak the blaze required seven fire engines and two aerial units to bring under control.

The three-story venue partially collapsed at around 9.45pm, leaving another building under threat. Nobody was injured. The fire crew worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control.

The Kingsway had previously been earmarked for demolition as part of a redevelopment scheme. The former nightclub had been unoccupied for several years.

Ringo Starr stood in for Pete Best at the Kingsway on the evening of 5 February 1962, following a lunchtime show at the Cavern Club.

The Kingsway Club, one of the first venues to host a Beatles lineup that featured Ringo Starr, was destroyed by fire on Monday night. According to local media, the fire was so bad that it took seven fire engines and two aerial units, along with the pouring rain, to bring the raging fire under control.

Fire service watch manager Peter Owens told the Southport Echo that the three-story venue suffered from a "severe fire" and that the "building has partially collapsed and there [was] another building threatened."

The fire was spotted late at night and burned into the early morning hours, when a rain storm finally helped bring the flames under control. A large crowd gathered to watch the once-important venue slowly burn to the ground.

The venue hosted Beatles shows in the early-1960s, following the departure of original drummer Pete Best and the addition of Starr. The club also hosted shows by local legend Cilla Black and Welsh singer Tom Jones. However, the dilapidated building had been condemned and scheduled for demolition in order to make way for redevelopment plans.

The Beatles first appearance in Southport. This was the first of three consecutive bookings. A step up in class from the earlier "jive hives" The Beatles were used to playing, with dressing rooms, curtains, carpets and a “real” stage. Brian Epstein took this opportunity to publicise the event with newspaper adverts and slightly exaggerated catch-lines like “Come and meet Pete, Paul, John and George - The group everyone has be asking for - Now they’re here at The Kingsway” and “Come and hear them play their latest record - It’s sensational!”.

29th January 1962
The second of a block booking of three consecutive shows. The venue was licensed to sell alcohol so The Beatles and other beat groups had to play in the upstairs ballroom, which didn’t have a bar, in order that under-18s could attend.

5th February 1962
On the face of it, this seemingly insignificant or "business as usual" concert, turned out to be a major landmark in Beatles history ...
Pete Best was unwell and unable to appear with The Beatles at either of their scheduled concerts. When faced with the dilemma of who they could get to stand in, their unanimous choice was none other than Ringo Starr!!! As luck would have it (well, luck as far as Ringo was concerned), Rory Storm and The Hurricanes had no bookings this day, so Ringo stood in for Pete Best at both the afternoon concert at The Cavern Club in Mathew Street, Liverpool, and then performed at The Kingsway in Southport in the evening.
So Ringo Starr (unofficially) became a Beatle for the first time in Southport, well, in the UK at least, as he had filled in for Pete Best in Hamburg on a number of occasions!!! Last of the three block bookings at this venue. Supported this time by The Quiet Ones.

Первое выступление состоялось 27 декабря 1960 года.
Мероприятие называлось "Big Beat Extra".
В концерте участвовали:
- The Del Renas (одна из первых ливерпульских групп, начавшая использовать клавишные (электроорган)
- The Searchers,
- The Deltones
- и The Beatles. "Прямиком из Гамбурга", как их анонсировал в этот день ливерпульский ди-джей и промоутер Боб Вулер.


"We got a gig. Allan Williams put us in touch with a guy called Bob Wooler, a compère on the dance-hall circuit. He tried us out one night and put an ad in the paper: 'Direct from Hamburg. The Beatles'. And we probably looked German, too; very different from all the other groups, with our leather jackets. We looked funny and we played differently. We went down a bomb."

В подготовке концерта участвовал также не менее известный в Ливерпуле промоутер Брайан Келли (кличка Би-Кей),
на фото - слева от Пита Беста. Он был мастак на разные битловские слоганы.
"Прозвище" "The Dynamic Beatles" - тоже его рук дело...

Упоминание Гамбурга вызвало смятение в рядах некоторых ливерпульских любителей рокенролла.

Полугодом раньше, 14 мая 1960 года.

Тот же Брайан Келли устроил прослушивание для отбора групп, которые будут в нём выступать.
Пристуствовали:
- Cliff Roberts & The Rockers,
- The Deltones,
- King Size Taylor & The Dominoes
- и The Beatles как The Silver Beats.

The Deltones, King Size Taylor & The Dominoes испытание выдержали. The Silver Beats тоже.

И афишка уже готова была.

Однако Битлз укатили в шотландское турне с Джонни Джентлом...
