Know Your LA Bands: Interview with thenewno2

CityZine brings you LA band, thenewno2, as a part of our "Get to know your LA Bands" series where we introduce you to a variety of bands and you tell us what you think. Recently, CityZine sat down the two band members that make up thenewno2 (hey maybe that's where their name comes from), Dhani Harrison who plays lead guitar, synths and vocals, and Oli Hecks who plays on drums and synths, to ask them about road trip experiences and guilty pleasures.

Keep an eye out on LA.CityZine for news on their soon to be released CD featuring Bryony Atkinson on Vocals, Nick Fyffe on bass, Marc Mann on Acoustic Guitar and Tom Hammond on cello. We will also have updates on any upcoming shows they will be performing in the LA.

Could you give a brief description of your band?

DHANI: Electro-Blues-surf-rock-Drumand Bass ?
OLO: Post World War I, gastro, electro, blues, rock.

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?

DHANI: "Hey You" by the Rock Steady Krew I had a fisher-price record player and the needle broke.
OLI: The Ghost Busters theme tune by Ray Parker. Jr on vinyl from WoolWorths in England.

What's the best cure for a hangover?

DHANI: Iceland
OLI: Sleep

What's on your ipod?

DHANI: Massive attack, Tricky, etc Hendrix, Zep, Beatles etc ... Wu Tang, Queens of the Stone Age
OLI: Lots of stuff from Lead Belly to Radiohead.

How do you get ready for a live show?

DHANI: Get really small
OLI: Rehearse

What's your favorite song to play live?

DHANI: I wanna be your Dog by the Stooges Bizarre fights ensue.
OLI: Give you Love by thenewno2 (Coming soon)

What's your guilty pleasure?

DHANI: It wouldn't be pleasant if I felt too much guilt.
OLI: Bacon

Who would win in a fight, a Ninja or a Pirate and why?

DHANI: c'mon .. really think about it a little Jack sparrow vs . Takira Maphoony 'nuff said
OLI: A Ninja, because he's a Ninja and not a sloppy drunkard with one eye.

What was the last album you bought?

DHANI: In Rainbows
OLI: Raising Sands (Rober Plant & Alison Krauss)

If you could rid the world of one song, what would it be?

DHANI: There are too many I couldn't choose fairly
OLI: YMCA (you know we've all had enough of that f*cking dance) or anything by M People.

Who would play you in a film based upon your life?

DHANI: An unknown

Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?

DHANI: Radiohead, Tricky, Goldfrapp, Devo, Wu Tang
OLI: Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine.

If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favorite album?

DHANI: Magical Mystery tour
OLI: Probably a Dylan album, Blonde On Blonde or Bringing It All Back Home or Led Zeppelin I or IV..or Revolver

What's your most memorable on the road story?

DHANI: When I played with Eric Clapton in Italy He made me take a solo after him It was rather intimidating
OLI: Drinking 3 bottles of absinthe before jumping out of a hotel room window dressed as a Turk, hugging a TV (plugged in) and landing in a swimming pool full of Rolls Royce's and sharks that I put there earlier.

Favorite place in LA?

DHANI: Stoneyfield farms ..
OLI: The DMV. Its really vibey.

What's the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?

DHANI: My dad told me to keep my head down. I did.
OLI: 'Don't put you're finger in there', and no.

What would be your perfect LA day?

DHANI: Brunch at the snug. meditation at SRF music at stoneyfield .. followed by Hamasaku and the Gas light for karaoke.
OLI: Waking up to a smog free sunny day, taking the tram to the beach and passing by all the bicycles and electric carsoh wait.

What's the best book you've read and film you've seen in the last 6 months?

DHANI: Best film Superbad best book Bring out the magic in your mind by Al Koran.
OLI: A book about Film Lighting and No Country For Old Meneven though I haven't seen it yet.

What three things could you not live without?

DHANI: Cheese, red wine and two's
OLI: Air, Water and burritos

Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don't already know.

DHANI: I have the best friends in the world . I love them. I'd die for them.
OLI: I'm really into cheese.

Альбом более прозрачный и тихий по сравнению с EP и не так давит всей своей прочувственностью, но не менее яркий и сильный. Заметно, что группа уже полностью сформировалась и нашла свое дыхание. Мне он очень понравился.

можно увидеть 90-секундный фильм 2002 года "Now you don't know what to think". Он снят был режиссером Arran De Moubray и в нем использовалась Original Music by Dhani Harrison. В музыке очень отчетливо слышны зачатки выпущенной пятью годами спустя песни "People".

Также обнаружилась еще одна запись, на котором Дхани (на этот раз уже вместе с Оли) принимал участие. Трэк "Open Up Your Eyes" был записан 8 января этого года и вышел на альбоме "Mind The Road" лондонской фанк-хип-хоп-группы "Sound Kartel". Дхани играл на гитаре, а Оли - на ударных. Впечатляет. Как по-Вашему, ошибка в буклете Josh Lopez: Rhythm on 'Travelation' к какой песне на самом деле относится, "Back to You"?

честно говоря, я пока еще не разобралась...

Зато есть еще отличные новости :). Jools Joyce поделился сингловой версией песни "Choose what you're watching". Найти ее можно тут: http://ifolder.ru/7639354. Это просто совершенно другая песня, чем была та, что выдрана с клипа. Звук более яркий и сочный, есть четко выраженная концовка. Просто сказочно сделано. Всячески рекомендую.

И еще я обнаружила диалог, открывавший множество эпизодов телевизионного шоу 60-х "The Prisoner", который собственно и дал название группе thenewno2.
Вопрошаюший Number Six и отвечающий Number Two, деревенский председатель, роль, которую играл в каждом следующем эпизоде новый человек.
Вот он:

Neo-hippie Beatles scion Dhani Harrison and bandmates drop their debut album Dhani Harrison may be the spitting image of his father, but that hasn’t paved the music-industry path for this waif-ish, mustachioed Beatle progeny. It’s not that the labels weren’t interested in thenewno2, the band British-born Harrison formed with drummer Oli Hecks, his longtime partner-in-crime,
in 2006. “We were initially with Capitol and EMI, wasted a lot of time with Astralwerks, we were in chats with New Line, which got absorbed into Warner….” But, Harrison jokes, “Everywhere we’ve gone, we’ve killed the label.” Th e partners took it as a sign. Th ey will release their fi rst album, You Are Here, on their own this month.
The duo, who produce heartfelt and moody multipart melodies, recently enlisted three scruff y musicians with serious street cred— Jonathan Sadoff , Jeremy Faccone and Jason Hiller—to take their “electro bluesy rock” project from studio seclusion to live performance. While Led Zeppelin remains a band favorite, Hecks cites the experimental Bristol scene of the ‘90s—with
acts like Massive Attack and Portishead—as more potent infl uences. “We’re revving up to be a real band now, as opposed to just a bunch of high-tech studio geeks,” says Harrison.
Th e 30-year-old guitarist—who is named after two Indian scale notes, “dha” and “ni”—recently moved into a three-story loft near the beach with his wolf-like puppy, Woody Guthrie. Harrison relocated to L.A. from England in early 2001 to help complete his father’s album, Brainwashed, with Jeff Lynne (lead singer of ELO). On it was “Marwa Blues,” an instrumental track composed by Harrison Sr., who died in November of 2001. Harrison Jr. coproduced the song, which won him a Grammy in 2004.
Meanwhile, thenewno2 (a reference to the anonymous administrator on The Prisoner, a 1960s British secret-agent TV series) fl owered when Hecks joined Harrison in L.A. soon thereafter. Together, the two wrote more than 50 songs, recording a dozen for You Are Here. Th e self-fi nanced operation aff ords the band more freedom, but its members have kept their side projects, which range from video-game consulting (Dhani) to fi lm scoring (Jonathan). “It didn’t seem worth it [to sign with a label], because... they were going to own everything,” says Harrison, who is all too familiar with the vagaries of the music industry. Famous case in point: Th e Beatles signed away their publishing rights, which netted Michael Jackson a fortune after he scooped them up in the ‘80s.
One of thenewno2’s distribution channels is Rock Band, a Guitar Heroesque video game that puts new music online. Gamers can download the tunes and actually “play” the songs with simulated instruments. Th e band is also trying out new memory-chip technology from chip giant San Disk that eff ectively turns cell phones into ad hoc iPods. “Everyone’s been bummed out about the state of the music industry, but I think it’s brilliant. No rules.
You could go around tying your cassette to a tennis ball and throwing it over someone’s wall—that’s as valid as some of the random stuff that people have been doing in the last few years,” says Harrison.
Self-styled guinea pigs, the members of thenewno2 are experimenting with delaying profi ts in favor of tech-savvy distribution, which Harrison says is done in the name of social uplift. It’s all part of what he calls “the Nice One,” an inclusive mantra that applies to everything good and positive.
The is includes a focus on giving listeners music through new technology and ignoring record sales in hopes of retaining an audience — that might then attract advertisers. “So that’s what we’re trying to achieve: positivity, people thinking for themselves, being nice to everyone. Th at’s kind of what we’re all about.” It’s a neo-1960s California optimism that shows Harrison’s as over the self-indulgent, angst-ridden indie world as he is number-crunching execs. “I guess we’re the new hippies or whatever that means. It is the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love. It can be the Summer of the Nice One.”
