The sole album by this obscure New Zealand trio is decent early-'70s folk-rock with some occasional pop, psychedelic, and blues traces, though it's not notable enough to be of interest beyond the specialized collecting circuit. The trio do manage a pleasant low-key sound that has a slightly unusual, diffident, laconically hip quality, especially in the vocals. That makes for a nice change from the leagues of early-'70s albums colored by earnest blandness to the singing and songwriting.

Like many rock records from the era made away from the main recording centers of the United States and United Kingdom, it has a slightly-behind-the-times feel, sounding more like a 1970 record than a 1972 one -- not a huge difference, but a notable one at a time when trends in pop music changed so rapidly. Several of the tracks sound a little like engaging minor league cousins to Country Joe & the Fish's better reflective psychedelic tunes, and a California psychedelic influence is audible in the harmonies and wafting organ of "Away from Here." Much of the material has a breezy feel that doesn't try too hard, nearing an almost jazzy sense of hippie cool on "Millions."

This group was originally known as Arman Sumpe Dur Express, which included an additional brass section. They recorded one single under this name. Before that, Andreassen, Knutsen and Methi had played together in the Kirkenes group The Scavers since 1959. Jahn Teigen had an illustrious past from groups such as The Enemies and The Red Squares. The latter was in fact a British group who lived and recorded in Denmark, but who were on tour in Israel when Teigen was asked to join Arman Sumpe (this may sound ridiculous but it's true!).

Popol Vuh's nicely packaged first LP was released in Autumn 1972. Musically it ranges from easily accessible progressive rock ("For Eternity" -distinguished by its good use of mellotron and flute) to funky jazz-rock ("Joy & -Pleasure"), dreamy ballads ("All We Have Is The Past") and on to more powerful tracks. The group didn't entirely master all these styles at this point and sometimes appeared hopelessly provincial (not being helped by Teigen's dreadful English pronunciation!).

Quiche Maya was packed in a black plastic bag with letters printed on it. The opening track "Queen Of Queens" was their most powerful offering and probably their most well-known song. Elsewhere melodramatic ballads with distant mellotron strings prevailed, sometimes turning to over-the-top operatic eruptions from Jahn Teigen.

In 1975 Florian Fricke (leader of the German group Popol Vuh) discovered his Norwegian namesakes and threatened them with a lawsuit. For this reason Popol Vuh changed their name to Popol Ace.

Stolen From Time (1975) was their most ambitious effort benefiting from unusually generous amounts of studio time, provided by a record company dreaming of international success. It's one of those albums that was carefully produced, second by second, and which consequently lacked spontaneity. Included were some of their strongest and most mature songs, such as "Bury Me Dead" and "Today Another Day". Their overall sound (with more elaborate instrumental passages than before) was influenced by Genesis circa 1972-74. Maybe the rigid production deterred the album from being recognised as a minor masterpiece - today its compositions appear stronger than those on the two preceding albums.

Jahn Teigen then left Popol Ace to start his highly successful solo career, eventually becoming one of the most famous entertainers in Norway. Popol Ace continued with Asbjørn Krogtoft (previously a member of 1-2-6) as their new vocalist. Their final album was a total disaster (commercially and artistically) with seriously uninspired songwriting.

Jenghiz Khan "Well Cut" (1970)

Jenghiz Khan were short-lived but their Well Cut has long been in demand among collectors. This contained the archetypical heavy progressive rock of the times, sometimes similar to Zarathustra, Uriah Heep and May Blitz, but also with some more mellow tracks. The lead vocalist might be compared to Paul Rodgers of Free. In my view this album is a bit overrated, but check it out if you're into the genre. Pierre Raepsaet had previously played with Laurelie.

Kleptomania

During the early seventies, Kleptomania were among the most important live acts in Belgium. They started working on their first album in 1971, but this was abandoned when their label (Flame Records) went bankrupt. Four tracks were completed in addition to seven rehearsal recordings. This material appeared on a bootleg album in 1979. Judging from this, a proper album of theirs would have been in the class of Irish Coffee and Jenghiz Khan with plenty of impressive guitar on the long instrumental parts. Stylistically, this is also related to Cream and Black Sabbath, but with a more improvisational and less blues-based character.

In Kleptomania's lifetime from 1969 to 1975 only singles were released - five in all on various labels (MCA, Kingdom and EMI Best Seller). Luckily the story didn't end there. In 1996 Music Emporium released a double CD containing their complete recordings. In addition to the already mentioned material this included 11 demo tracks recorded from 1972 to 1974. Lademacher and other members later played in the hard rock outfit Tush.

Irish Coffee (1971)

They were from the Aalst area in the East-Flanders and were known as The Voodoos until the beginning of 1971. Their first single "Masterpiece" gained some recognition in several European countries and allowed Irish Coffee to make an eponymous album, which eventually sold 3,000 copies (by Belgian underground rock standards this was highly impressive). With Souffreau's powerful, screaming and soulful voice and the semi-classical electric guitar and organ lines, Irish Coffee were a Belgian equivalent of Deep Purple or 2066 & Then. The album had several hard-hitting tracks ("The Show"), but Irish Coffee were at their best on the more introspective and reflective "A Day Like Today" (6:52) and The Beginning Of The End". The album sounded a bit rushed due to the restricted studio time, but this really did the music no harm. In fact, the songwriting shows great potential and the group could have made it internationally if a major company had invested time and money (which they never did on Belgian groups). A recommended album for anyone interested in the vintage heavy progressive sound and indeed the favourite Belgian album of several collectors.

After this, Irish Coffee made three more singles, but none were up the standard of their previous material. Sadly they later split after a fatal car accident in which Paul Lambrechts was killed and two other members injured.

Dragon "Kalahen" (1977)

Their first album was released on the British Acorn label. Some years ago it was an expensive collectors item, but some unsold copies were discovered and the price dropped. On offer here is a curious mixture of spacious and progressive styles, related to Pulsar, Akasha and Amon Düül II. Opinions vary about their musical validity and, although it contains some parts with unusual and interesting instrumentation, this is certainly no lost masterpiece in my view.

The group also made some demo recordings before their demise. These were eventually released in 1988 and might be of interest for music archaeologists (but be prepared for a few false notes and tape dropouts).
