Sting.com is reporting that Rush will be included on Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace, a new album supporting Tibet and the Dalai Lama. The story states that the album will contain all acoustic tracks, although it is unknown whether the Rush track is a newly recorded acoustic track, or if it is a previously released track (i.e. "Resist"). Thanks to RushIsABand.com for the headup!
"The Art of Peace Foundation announced today that over a dozen of the world's top musical artists, including Sting, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Suzanne Vega, Rush and Duncan Sheik are coming together for an album entitled, Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace. The project is the artists' expression of peace and support for Tibet and the Dalai Lama. The album features acoustic songs recorded by the artists that are proactive celebrations of our shared humanity and common search for happiness. The songs themselves reflect the sublime beauty and vulnerabilities experienced in pursuit of happiness, peace and freedom. The album will release August 5th, three days before the opening of the Summer Olympics..." - Sting.com, July 9, 2008

Working Man (Vault Edition) Single Working Man (Vault Edition) Single
Originally released for Rock Band on July 8th, today Rush has released the "Working Man" (Vault addition) on iTunes!
"The version features a never before heard guitar solo that Alex Lifeson did during the original recordings back in the 70’s. The song was re-mixed by Rich Chycki who is known for his work on R30 and Snakes & Arrows. A great addition to the Rush song library!" - Rush.com, July 21, 2008
Rockband.com has a recent video interview with Alex & Geddy filmed backstage before a recent concert, where they discuss finding this lost "Working Man 'alternate solo'", and go into detail regarding the making of their debut album.

"'This album will focus people's attention on the importance of Tibet, the gifts of its culture, and the crisis the Tibetan people are facing today,' said one of the album's organisers, Michael Wohl. The album is due for global release on iTunes on August 5, three days before the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. It will then be available through other outlets the following week, the statement said. Wohl, from the Art of Peace Foundation, said the timing of the release was deliberate. 'We wanted to express our support for the Tibetan people and their message of peace through music, a fundamental means of expression, at a time when the eyes of the world are on China.'"

Neil Peart has updated his website with the June 2008 installment of "News, Weather & Sports": "Independence Day". Neil writes about performing in Atlantic City, traveling up through New England, and includes a lengthy and hilarious interlude on helmet safety. The report opens with a short tirade on the injustice of comp tickets which are denied most hard core fans (and in this case those given to a casino's "big losers"), and at the same time Neil shows he's not as out of touch with his fans as some may think.

The 2004 Billboard Magazine Spotlight On Rush The 2004 Billboard Magazine Spotlight On Rush
After the recent attention Rush received in Rolling Stone magazine and the division among fans on whether or not the article 'Rush Never Sleeps' was a favorable one or not, John over at Cygnus-X1.net decided to revisit the amazing tribute Billboard magazine did on Rush back in May 2004 in celebration of their 30th Anniversary.
"The collection of articles and tributes that appeared in that issue were heart-warming and inspirational to read and further solidified the amazing and influential career that Rush has been blessed with. So, with that in mind, I've transcribed all of the Rush-related articles that appeared in that edition of Billboard magazine. Additionally, I've scanned all the images that accompanied those articles as well as all of the tributes and advertisements for Rush that were listed.

Neil Peart in September's American Motorcyclist
Neil Peart can be seen in the September issue of the American Motorcyclist Association’s American Motorcyclist magazine. In the “Snapshots” section, Neil is pictured at the AMA’s museum with his drums and bike. Later in an article entitled “Seeing Stars,” they show his bike with a brief caption. - Thanks Roger for the headsup!

Neil's motorcycle and R30 drumkit are part of the "MotoStars: Celebritires + Motorcycles" exhibit at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio. The exhibit features "machines, memorabilia and more drawn from celebrities' favorite two-wheel adventures". Rush fan Larry Barnes dropped by the museum and snapped off a few pics of the exhibit; the R30 drum kit is situated next to Neil's 1994 BMW R1100GS, with a odometer showing 163,764 km!

Snakes & Arrows Live DVD & Blu-ray - Content Revealed
Buy from Amazon
"Zoë Vision/Anthem Entertainment is pleased to announce the release of the Snakes & Arrows Live DVD on November 25 from the legendary rock trio RUSH. This 3 disc DVD set, also available as a Blu-ray Disc, follows their Zoë Vision DVD releases Rush-R30 (2005) and Rush in Rio (2003).

Snakes & Arrows Live DVD (full track listing below) was filmed with 21 High Definition cameras in 16x9 widescreen format, over two nights in October 2007 at the Netherlands’ Ahoy Rotterdam arena during the renowned rock trio’s lengthy world tour. Additional SD footage was filmed in Atlanta this past July. The five month trek supporting Rush’s critically acclaimed 2007 studio release, Snakes & Arrows, which includes the Grammy® Award-nominated track, "Malignant Narcissism," topped Pollstar’s Top 100 2007 Tours list at #12.

While previous DVD releases showcase different sides of the band, this DVD offers fans a rare and close up look at the prodigious musicianship for which the band is renown. Cameras follow bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart, closely, capturing not only their playing, note for note, but also the intimacy they share on stage. The diverse track list includes many new songs from Snakes & Arrows as well as old favorites like “Tom Sawyer” and “Freewill” plus an explosive rendition of "Between the Wheels."" Among the hidden gems and numerous special tour moments included as extras is the fan coveted "What’s That Smell" vignette and outtakes, a skit used to intro the second set, which capitalizes on the still emerging comedic talents of both Alex and Geddy who excel (and revel) in their roles as wild characters. Featuring collector’s quality packaging and a choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound or PCM Stereo for a superior audio experience, the DVD was mixed by frequent collaborator Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Mick Jagger). Total running time is 221 minutes.

Snakes & Arrows made a triumphant debut on the Billboard 200 upon its release May 2007, entering the chart in the #3 spot. The album’s popular success marked Rush’s highest chart debut since 1993, as well as the group’s eleventh top ten album in the U.S. Snakes & Arrows also debuted at #3 in the band’s native Canada and at #13 in the UK - the band’s highest British chart ranking in 16 years. In addition, the album premiered in the top ten in Sweden and Finland, and in the top twenty in Norway, the Netherlands, and Japan." - Rush.com Press Release

Crawdaddy Interview With Alex Lifeson Crawdaddy Interview With Alex Lifeson
There's a new interview with Alex Lifeson by Crawdaddy on the Wolfgangsvault website. Lifeson discusses Snakes & Arrows, the tour, not playing Faithless live, Rush history, and his online guitar lessons on iVideosongs.com

Interview with Rush's Alex Lifeson
by Max Mobley

I’ve been very fortunate to have met a few of my heroes, including Elvis Costello when I was drunk off of free backstage beer. Costello could have destroyed me in our brief but memorable conversation together, but there was no need. His ego didn’t demand it, and he was apparently interested in our conversation, or at least was interested in talking to a fan for a dozen minutes or so. The conversation probably would have lasted longer had I not tried to kiss him—that was a big note-to-self moment for myself, if not for both of us...

When I know I am going to meet someone I admire, I approach the moment with caution. I’d rather keep it short than shatter any myths. So when I learned I was going to interview Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson, my guitar hero for as long as I’ve been a guitar player, I just knew I was going to come across like a geek at a Star Trek convention, and at some point Mr. Lifeson would feel obliged to recommend I get a life. I spent hours writing down all my gushy Rush-geek questions and comments and then burying them like kim chee, all with the hopes of being able to draw up some proper questions about playing guitar, and about Rush. It was really hard since I thought I already knew everything there was about the band. Balancing questions about what it’s like to play "YYZ" on a real guitar as opposed to the plastic one from the Guitar Hero video game and say, questions about the chords of his impromptu ‘jazz number’ on Rush in Rio was quite a challenge. Also, in "The Sphere" from "Cygnus X-1 Book II", is the time signature really 11/8 or is it alternating between 5/4 and 6/4? See what I mean?

Fortunately, Lifeson is a generous interviewee, so things turned rather quickly into a conversation about something we both love—him! No wait, that’s not right. Like his bandmates, Lifeson comes across very unassuming. So we ended up talking about the thing that brought us together—a love for playing guitar and a love for music—with some Rush on the side!

Crawdaddy!: Snakes and Arrows has been a huge chart-topping success, and one of Rush’s biggest albums. At some point when you were making it, did you realize that this was going to be a big record along the lines of Moving Pictures or 2112, two of Rush’s most influential albums?

Alex Lifeson: I don’t know, it’s like a birth. It’s a pregnancy and you don’t quite know how the kid is going to turn out. And then after the term, there it is and in this case, it was a beautiful baby.

We felt very positive about it right from the start. The way Geddy [Lee, bass and vocals] and I were writing—very casually in the beginning and then introducing Nick [Rasculinecz, producer] into the mix about two-thirds of the way through—and then his influence and the great recording studio, Allaire, which unfortunately is going out of business.

Then the whole mixing in LA went really well. We had never done anything like that before. It was the first time we actually recorded and mixed a record in America.

So every aspect of the process of making that record was very, very positive. It was a cumulative thing, and at the end we felt it was some of our very best work.

Crawdaddy!: I’m sorry to hear that Allaire Studios is going out of business [it recently closed after this interview took place]. The ‘Making of Snakes and Arrows’ documentary on the MVI version of the album really shows off the studio, and what it’s like to make a Rush record. I guess Allaire is another casualty of the Pro Tools home studio world.

Lifeson: Oh, exactly. And they had such a great set-up there. I mean the rooms were great, the equipment, the control room with the big Neve console in it was one of the best rooms I’ve heard anywhere. The accommodations were great, the staff was great, they had it all. But unfortunately, yeah, you can go anywhere now, take your Pro Tools, and make a record, and that’s what everyone is doing.

Crawdaddy!: “Faithless” is one of my favorites from Snakes and Arrows, partly because it has such a monster solo—any reason you didn’t play it on the tour?

Lifeson: Well, we were torn. We wanted to play the whole record live, but we had to settle for nine songs, otherwise we’d be playing for four hours and that’s a little too much for us and, I think, for our audience. We had to make a decision about some of the songs we wanted to do. We all really wanted to do “Faithless”, and we talked about actually doing it on the last half of the tour. We prepped it and we ran through it a couple of times, but in the end we just decided to kind of stick with what we had and just change up some of the older stuff.

Crawdaddy!: It must be a very tough decision when you have an album like that.

Lifeson: Yeah, well what you do is one set you do Snakes and Arrows and then the next set you do all the old stuff. But I think that breaks it up a little too much for us. We like to mix the whole thing so that the show is more representative of our whole career.

Crawdaddy!: Rush concerts have become a clinic on how to play a rock concert.

Lifeson: Yeah, we’ve been at it for a while. [Laughs]
