Их снимали специально для показа в Top Of The Pops. 8 Arms To Hold You.

н. *Promotion*, т.

Beatles' riddle solved
Aug 26 2004
The Insider, Liverpool Echo

A MYSTERY surrounding one of the Beatles' most famous songs has finally been solved. Stan Williams, a contemporary of the Beatles, has been able to identify the "pretty nurse" the Fab Four sing about in Penny Lane.

The lyrics: "Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout/The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray/And tho' she feels as if she's in a play/ She is anyway," refer to Stan's childhood friend Beth Davidson.

Stan, who was born and raised in Liverpool and went to school with John Lennon, says: "I have a vivid memory of being on Penny Lane, for a haircut or something, and Lennon came up with his pals to talk to Beth and I.

"Beth was a nurse cadet and she would only have been about 12 or 13 at the time. We were all laughing and joking. "She was carrying a tray, like they sold ice creams in old fashioned cinemas from, with poppies for Armistice Day. "I remember the first time I heard Penny Lane. As soon as I heard the lyrics I thought 'Oh God, that's Beth'. I was, and am, absolutely certain it was her they were singing about."

Stan and Beth were childhood friends and stayed in touch even after Stan moved away to go to university. Stan, who now lives in Scotland, is able to shed some light on the "play" the Beatles sung about. Beth loved performing and her friend's father built a stage, complete with lights and seats, in the back yard where the girls would perform in front of an invited audience.

Stan said: "I think people will be interested. I love the Beatles and I think this will be important to any Beatles fan."

Beth went on to marry Lennon's best friend from childhood, Pete Shotton. Sadly Beth died at the age of 35 leaving a son behind.

David Bedford, webmaster of the British Beatles Fan Club, said: "This bit of the song has never been commented on before. It must have been John Lennon's contribution towards Penny Lane. Beatles fans will be intrigued. Penny Lane is one of their most famous songs."

To find out more about Beth's story David will be leading a special tour to Penny Lane on Saturday. Tickets cost £20 for a three-and-a-half hour tour which leaves the Moat House hotel at 3.30pm are available from Liverpool Beatles Tours on 0151-281 7738.

Tina's perfectly Frank

FORMER Brookie actress Tina Malone has set up her own independent film company called To Be Frank. Last year Tina and fellow Brookie star Dean Sullivan formed DSTM with the aim of making a trilogy of new Liverpool films. Reuben Don't Take Your Love To Town, starring Celia Imrie and Johnny Vegas, was the first. It was shot in and around the city and received wide critical praise, Now Tina and Dean have parted company. But she stresses it's all very amicable.

"We both love TV and film but decided that we wanted to do different projects," Tina told The insider. "I have now formed To Be Frank, my new company named after my dad." Tina is as busy as ever and is now shooting the new series of Channel's 4's smash hit series Shameless.

But she is determined to make more movies.

"My new company is keen to employ the cream of Liverpool actors and crews while nurturing the wealth of talent that exists within the region," she says.. "All too often film companies come to Liverpool merely to use it as a double for somewhere else. What I intend to do is show Liverpool in its true light, to display the lavish, sumptuous city of ours with its inspirational architecture and diversity of culture."

A spokesperson for Iliad property developers which is backing Tina's new venture said: "We are thrilled and excited by the news. We look forward to working with Tina."

Tina, who has given up the booze, chocolate and ciggies, said at her launch party in Duke Street: "I always give up something every February 14. There aren't many vices I've got left now. Maybe swearing is next on the cards."

Lot It Be

STEVEN Bailey from the Beatle Shop is always delighted to receive items for the annual Beatle auction at Lipa. This year he says he nearly had a cracker of an item - a Cavern Club card with John Lennon's hair on it. The "well-used" card was signed by Paul McCartney, which would give it a value of around £150. When asked about the attached small packet of hair, the lady who brought the item in said: "Oh, that's John's, I cut it off him in the Cavern." That being the case, says Steven, you could add another nought, making the value £1,500. Steven hopes the lady will put the card in for auction next year. WHAT better way to celebrate her recent success in Shirley Valentine than with a glass of wine. Pauline Daniels had a celebratory do at Greek restaurant Yamas in Borough Road, Birkenhead. The actress and comedienne helped raise £7,000 on three sell-out nights. The proceeds will go to help fund a disabled lift at the town's Little Theatre in Grange Road West where she performed Willy Russell's one-woman show. Mike McCartney, who will become Wirral's Cultural Ambassador on October 1, was there in an official capacity. ONE of Liverpool's most famous hairdressers visited Formby this week. Herbert Howe, owner of the famous hair salon of the same name and the star of Shampoo, the first reality TV programme, called in to the Aqua Relax Lounge for a "pamper day" in celebration of his 60th birthday.

Tina Morris, owner of the Aqua Relax Lounge, says: "Herbert has always been my hero, not only because he is a fantastic hairdresser but because he has made a great success of his business and he is a great example of Liverpool people and what they can achieve.

"He had a lovely time at the salon and especially liked the reflexology treatment."

Herbert later went to Quo Vardis for a meal where he gave Tina the opportunity to get some great advice about making her salon even more successful.

PAUL: ‘Penny Lane’ was a little more surreal, too, although in a cleaner way. I remember saying to George Martin, ‘I want a very clean recording.’ I was into clean sounds – maybe a Beach Boy influence at that point.

The ‘fireman with his hourglass’ and all that imagery was us trying to get into a bit of art. The lyrics were all based on real things. There was a barber called something like Bioletti (I think he’s actually still there in Penny Lane) who, like all barbers, had pictures of the haircuts you could choose. But instead of saying, ‘The barber with pictures of haircuts in his windows,’ it was changed round to: ‘Every head he’s had the pleasure to have known.’ A barber showing photographs – like an exhibition.

It was twisting it to a slightly more artsy angle, more like a play. Like the nurse who’s selling poppies from a tray (which some Americans thought was ‘selling puppies from a tray’) for Remembrance Day. Then she feels as if she’s in a play’ – which ‘she is anyway’. These were all the trippy little ideas that we were trying to get in.

Penny Lane was the depot I had to change buses at to get from my house to John’s and to a lot of my friends. It was a big bus terminal which we all knew very well. I sang in the choir at St Barnabas Church opposite.

Penny Lane will keep its name.

Liverpool officials said Saturday they would modify a proposal to rename streets linked to the slave trade when they realized the road made famous by the 1967 Beatles song was one of them.

The unassuming suburban street was named after James Penny, a wealthy 18th century slave ship owner. Liverpool, the Beatles' northern English hometown, was once a major hub for the slave trade.

"I don't think anyone would seriously consider renaming Penny Lane," said city council member Barbara Mace, who has been pressing to get rid of names linked to slavery. "My proposal is to rename several of the streets and to replace them with the names of people who have done something positive."

Eric Lynch, 74, who gives tours focused on the history of Liverpool's involvement in the slave trade, said renaming any streets or squares would be a "disgraceful attempt to change history."

"It's like somebody in Germany deciding to bulldoze Auschwitz," Lynch said. "Like somebody deciding not to celebrate D-Day. If we don't know the past how can we make sure we don't make the same mistakes? Are the monuments to the Irish famines going to go next?"

"You cannot and should not change history, however disagreeable it is," he said.

The 90-member council plans to talk Wednesday about a plan to rename several central Liverpool streets named after notorious slave traders.

Some want instead to honor Anthony Walker, a black teenager murdered with an ax in a July 2005 racial attack. Others suggest renaming streets for activists who fought for the abolition of slavery.

"It's not trying to rewrite history," Mace said. "You can't. Liverpool's whole history is based on the slave trade. That's on the history books."

Liverpool was an important port of call for slave ships traveling between Africa and the Americas, and during the second half of the 18th century, much of the city's economy was based on the trade.

>>"It's like somebody in Germany deciding to bulldoze Auschwitz,"

James Penny was a Liverpool slaveship owner and anti-abolitionist. Penny Lane in Liverpool, England was named after him. In 1792 he was presented with a magnificent silver epergne for speaking in favour of the slave trade to a parliamentary committee. Penny Lane was used as a song title by the Beatles who grew up in Liverpool.

According to evidence he gave the British Government, Penny allowed the slaves on the Atlantic Slave route to play games and dance and sing.
"If the Weather is sultry, and there appears the least Perspiration upon their Skins, when they come upon Deck, there are Two Men attending with Cloths to rub them perfectly dry, and another to give them a little Cordial.... They are then supplied with Pipes and Tobacco.... They are amused with Instruments of Music peculiar to their own country...and when tired of Music and Dancing, they then go to Games of Chance".

In the same body of evidence, he notes that the fatality rate for his slaves was one in twelve, and that "The average allowance of width to a slave is fourteen and two-thirds inches."

Penny Lane not cashing in on Fab 4Penny Lane not cashing in on Fab 4
by Tom Hundley
Chicago Tribune (MCT)
30 July 2007

LIVERPOOL, England—It was John Lennon’s street, but Paul McCartney’s song.

“Penny Lane” was released as a single 40 years ago, and it heralded a new level of musical creativity for the Beatles, especially for the song-writing combination of Lennon and McCartney. A few months later the world would hear “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and popular music would never be quite the same.

The song’s first two verses “practically wrote themselves,” McCartney once told an interviewer. “The lyrics were all based on real things.”

The real Penny Lane remains remarkably unaffected by its pop culture immortality. It is today what it was back then: a scruffy working-class street of two-story Victorian row houses and an assortment of shops.

There’s Penny Lane Cakes & Pies and the Penny Lane Fish and Chips, pretty much as they were when a young John Lennon used to walk this street each day on his way to the Dovedale school. Future Beatle George Harrison also went to the school, but he was three years behind John.

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer ...

The barbershop is right where it’s supposed to be, but Mr. Bioletti, the barber who used to show the photographs “of every head he’s had the pleasure to know,” died a few years ago. This I was told by Jimmy the Lollipop Man, the school crossing guard on Penny Lane.

Jimmy’s real name is Jim Davidson. He is 59 and he remembers some of the Beatles’ earliest gigs because his mother worked for Liverpool music promoter Allan Williams, the Beatles’ first manager who is famous (or not so famous) for dismissing them as “a right load of layabouts.”

“Right behind you, that used to be the St. Barnabas Church Hall. John Lennon played there with the Quarry Men, his first band,” said Davidson, pointing to an ornate building that now houses a Spanish restaurant.

“And down at the bottom by the roundabout, that big church - that’s St. Barnabas. That’s where Paul McCartney’s brother got married. Paul used to sing in the church choir,” he said.

Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout

The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray

And though she feels as if she’s in a play

She is anyway.

Someone tried to convert the bus shelter in the middle of the roundabout into a bistro called Sgt. Pepper’s, but from the looks of it, things didn’t work out. The house where John was born is just up the street. The Woolworths where Cynthia Lennon, his first wife, used to work is just around the corner.

For a weary seaport that seemed to be slowly crumbling into oblivion, Liverpool has staged an impressive comeback over the last decade or so, part of which has been fueled by the city’s shrewd exploitation of its most famous native sons.

The local airport has been expanded and renamed after John Lennon. And the centerpiece of the city’s downtown renewal efforts, the Albert Dock, features an excellent Beatles museum.

Visitors can hear non-stop Beatles music at a restored version of the Cavern Club, the subterranean vault where the Beatles played 274 gigs. Or they can take the two-hour Magical Mystery bus tour of other Beatles sites scattered across the city.

Penny Lane, located in south Liverpool, is on the tourist circuit, but it remains surprisingly untouched and untouristy.

Well, perhaps “untouched” is not the word - city authorities long ago gave up trying to replace the metal Penny Lane street signs regularly swiped by souvenir hunters—but it’s clear that the merchandising of John, Paul, George and Ringo has not yet spread to the neighborhood where they grew up.

Suzy Miller was pessimistic as she fried up some bacon butties (bacon and egg sandwiches) for the regulars at Penny Lane Cakes & Pies.

“The Tesco has taken all our business away,” she complained.

Tesco is Britain’s equivalent of Wal-Mart, and its outlet a few blocks from here was built on the site of the Quarry Bank Grammar School, John Lennon’s high school.

A record store on Penny Lane went out of business a few years ago; the tattered Beatles posters in the display window have faded to dingy pastel tones.

The Penny Lane Wine Bar, the only business on the street that makes an effort to cater to tourists, is empty in the middle of the afternoon.

“It’s terrible. All these tourists turn up, and there’s nothing here for them,” said Steve Johnson, who runs a kitchen design business on Penny Lane.

“It’s not a tourist attraction the way it should be. If this were America, it would be like Disneyland. You’d have gift shops and bed and breakfasts, and we’d all be millionaires like the Beatles,” he said.

People pass me by on my imaginary street,
Ordinary people, it's impossible to meet.
Holding conversations that are always incomplete,
Well, I don't know.
Oh, where are there places to go?
Someone somewhere has to know.
I don't know
