Toronto SARS Show Due On DVD This Summer

Last summer, almost half a million people gathered together for the largest ticketed single day musical event in history and Canada's biggest-ever rock concert. On July 30, at Downsview Park in Toronto, 14 musical acts including The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Rush, Justin Timberlake, Sam Roberts and The Guess Who gathered together for 12 hours of musical indulgence that was broadcast live on the Internet and was seen in 178 countries around the world, with the website receiving close to 63 million hits.

The concert, which Canadians affectionately dubbed SARStock, was organized to raise money, increase business and advance tourism in Canada, which was hit dramatically with adverse publicity due to SARS. The concert was an enormous success that helped put Toronto and Canada back on the map. Plus, it was a good excuse to take a day off work in the middle of the week.

To help you remember it all, TGA DVD and Rhino Home Video (through Warner Music Canada) are releasing the concert on DVD. The DVD, which is almost two hours and 40 minutes in length, has been dubbed Toronto Rocks and will be released across Canada on June 29. Prices for the DVD will range between $30 and $32.

There is a special two-disc DVD, which will be available exclusively in Canada, featuring performances by Sam Roberts, Kathleen Edwards, La Chicane, The Tea Party, Blue Rodeo and Sass Jordan. The Canadian edition will also include special bonus material such as an "In The Crowd" segment, where you'll be able to view the concert as the fans did and the "Press Tent" segment, where you'll watch as the musicians talk to the media.

The other DVD, which will be available to the rest of the world, features performances by The Have Love Will Travel Revue (featuring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi), The Flaming Lips, The Isley Brothers, Justin Timberlake, The Guess Who, Rush, AC/DC and, of course, a six-song set by The Rolling Stones. This second disc will also include special bonus material including "The Photo" (which is an exclusive backstage look at all the bands getting together for a group photo), Justin Timberlake hanging out with the Rolling Stones and discussing their performance of "Miss You," AC/DC performing with the Stones and a "Director's Chair" segment, which features director Marty Callner instructing AC/DC on their performance of "Thunderstruck."

A 60-minute promotional television program, which features some highlights of the concert and includes a three-minute segment plugging Toronto has been created and will be distributed, for free, to TV stations around the world in the week preceding the launch of the DVD.

None of the musicians involved in Toronto Rocks will profit at all from the DVD, as all of the royalties that the artists make will be donated to Canada's healthcare and hospitality workers, as well as to four selected charities.

Ever wondered what Mick Jagger and Justin Timberlake talked about before their duet of Miss You/Cry Me A River during the Rolling Stones' closing set at SARS-stock last summer?

Well, you can find out on June 29 when Toronto Rocks, a two-disc DVD documenting the multi-act concert at Downsview Park that drew close to a half-million people -- the largest ticket single day event in history -- is released.

"In Canada, it's basically the concert -- about 90% -- and then some," said concert organizer Michael Cohl in an exclusive interview with The Sun yesterday afternoon prior to today's official unveiling of the much-anticipated DVD.

"Meaning there's some really nifty backstage pieces, at least for me. And I'm still a music fan, somehow still, after all these years. But when I go back, and I see Justin and Mick sitting on stage going, 'When do you want me to come in? Which bar? What about this?' And Mick saying to Justin, 'And this is where you should do, Cry Me A River, and Justin like nearly faints! It's sort of like, 'He knows my song?' 'Cause he looks at him. He's stunned for about a five-second (interval) of silence and then he looks at him and goes, 'Really?' And Mick says, 'Yeah, I think they'd really like that.' "

Cohl said the two-disc Toronto Rocks set, with a suggested retail price of $39.96, would be available at all retailers in Canada.

In the rest of the world, including the U.S., Toronto Rocks will be released as a single disc.

Cohl had to fight to get every act on the bill included on the worldwide disc.

"I got everybody on it," said Cohl, "but some of them are on the actual DVD of the concert and some of them are in the bonus features. Warner wouldn't take two discs for the rest of the world."

Cohl said all of the profits from the DVD sales have been earmarked for various charities that will be announced today at a press conference in Toronto.

У меня есть этот двойной ДВД. Качество хорошее. Но с Роллингами всего один ДВД из двух. Первый там ac/dc. А также есть билет с этого концерта также. Ну что сказать ДВД не плохой но у меня есть намного лучше по этому же концертному туру. К примеру Роллинг Стоунз в Дели. Я могу сказать что это не концерт а беспредел. Что там конечно вытворял Джаггер надо только видеть. Тем более концерт проходит под сильным проливным дождем похожим на тропический. И все естественно мокрые и публика просто в экстазе. Сьемки на ДВД естественно профессиональные.

Все-таки это уже другой дивиди, официальный, с разными исполнителями. Выйдет только в июне.
Мокрых индийцев в экстазе вполне себе даже представляю - им дождь в радость, а для нас на концерте в Москве дождь явно был не к месту.

Keith Richards Reissues Wingless Angels Reggae CD

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards (news) has reissued the "Wingless Angels" reggae CD, which features drumming and chanting by a troupe of devout Rastafarians in Jamaica.

The CD, which Richards produced with Rob Fraboni, was originally released by Island Records in 1997, under license from Richards' Mindless Records imprint.

The new version, featuring the same track listing and artwork, is initially available only via his Web site (http://www.keithrichards.com).

Wingless Angels consisted of seven musicians belonging to the Nyabinghi, a strict Rastafarian sect based in Steer Town, Jamaica. They recorded the CD in November 1995, with a little help from Richards, whom they dubbed "Brother Keith," on guitars, bass, keyboards and vocals.

Одной моей знакомой очень нравится Браян, она просто от него без ума. Не подскажешь, пел ли он что то с Роллингами (кроме подпевок), я имею в виду реальный вокал, хотя бы только припев, если не целую песню. Я только видел как он кричал с Миком поочередно на концерте в конце песни I Just wanna make love to you, но чтобы пел, не знаю такого

Нет он не пел не когда. А вообще есть такой и компакт диск и винил но это оба издания бутлеги называется the Brian Jones Memory. Там он на многих песнях подпевает но это все известные вещи в основном.

Richards gives impromptu performance
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -- Blues fans at a small Connecticut club were treated to a surprise performance by Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards.

The guitarist jumped on stage at The BoxCar on Friday night for some off-the-cuff music with David Honeyboy Edwards, 89, and Rocky Lawrence.

"That's right, this is my neighbourhood, too. At least part of the time," Richards, who owns a home in nearby Weston, told the crowd.

Lawrence, of West Haven, was ecstatic.

"When the three of us were up there, I was having so much fun I forgot there was even an audience there," he said.

Richards signed a Telecaster guitar for the bar's owner, Kevin Kiekel. It is displayed in a case behind the bar.

"Half of my dream has been fulfilled already," Kiekel said. "Now I want to get Eric (Clapton) in here."

Lost guitar returned to Bill Wyman

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Nearly 40 years after he lost it, Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman has one of his guitars back, thanks to a New Zealand musician.

Wellington music maker and business consultant Nick Sceats airfreighted the bass to Wyman two months ago after discovering that it belonged to the rock star.

Now, Wyman has sent a note to Sceats, thanking him for the bass that he thought he'd lost forever, local media reported Friday.

"It doesn't look too bad for wear and tear, considering what it has gone through and the travelling it has done over the years," Wyman wrote in the letter, excerpts of which were printed in Wellington's Dominion Post newspaper.

"Once again, thank you. Your kindness was well appreciated," he said.

The rare guitar, called a Wyman bass, was one of a small number that the manufacturer Vox made in the 1960s, and the only Vox guitar adorned with an endorser's name: Wyman.

It's still unknown how the 67-year-old rocker lost the guitar in Wellington in 1966 on tour with the Rolling Stones.

Sceats, who had the guitar in his possession for 15 years, said it was known among local musicians as the "legendary Wyman bass." So he wrote Wyman saying he had a bass guitar which may have belonged to him, and offering to return it.

Sceats said he was stunned when Wyman wrote back to say it was definitely his, and that he would love to have it back.
