'Gimme Shelter' director working on McCartney film
Documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles is editing a film account of Paul McCartney's recent Concert For New York City.
Variety reports Maysles, 75, who along with his brother David created the classic Rolling Stones 1970 documentary "Gimme Shelter," was contacted by McCartney with the notion of creating a chronicle of the show.
The concert, which already spawned a live telecast, featured a diverse group of acts (Billy Joel, The Who, Jay Z) paying tribute to firefighters and policemen killed in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The film was shot as per McCartney's request -- on black and white film. Maysles' brother died in 1987. The project is a reunion of sorts for the singer and director. The Maysles brothers were hired by Britain's Granada Television to document The Beatles' 1964 trip to America.
Their film of the Beatles trip, which was originally known as "What's Happening! The Beatles In The USA," was issued on video in 1991 as "The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit."
Maysles told Variety he will spend the next six months editing his footage from the McCartney show.
