Beatles in Surround Sound?!

There are reports of Beatles activity on the Let it Be front.
This is expected to include both a video and DVD [?] of the Let it Be sessions.
Also in the pipeline are a remastered A Hard Day's Night.
EMI is also preparing to launch Surround Sound editions of the Beatles catalogue in 2003.

The release of the “Get Back” pre-Spector version is cited everywhere this month, with Paul as the source. Don’t forget he always loathed what Spector did to it. When the Queen visited Liverpool and opened John Lennon Airport and also visited Paul’s art exhibition a week or two ago, papers noted that Paul was “too busy” to travel the 400 yards necessary to meet Yoko at the Town Hall or to attend the airport opening, so maybe agreeing to release “Get Back” in its form before John & Spector more or less crapped upon ‘Let it Be’ and ‘Long and Winding Road’ won’t be too easy. Paul says that “It has a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t have put on there”. But it will bring in a lot of cash. They’re also talking about an extended ‘Let it Be Sessions” album. Record Collector says EMI have “failed to locate” the missing reel-to-reel tapes and “may have to resort to unofficial sources” (i.e, the many bootlegs which exist because someone managed to locate them first and walked with them) – let’s hope the Band fragment gets on there then. And 2003 will see the first two remastered into Surround Sound Beatles DVDs – Please, Please Me and With the Beatles.

Then the Stones are releasing 21 or 22 pre-1970 albums beginning in the Fall, and will be releasing the original British albums at long last (as well as the butchered and chopped US versions which are now on CD). They also say that it’s the first time ever that the original master tapes have been used in Stones CD releases.

Time-Life Music, a division of Time-Life Inc., is teaming up with Henninger Vision, a leading provider of complete, end-to-end creative audio and video-based production and multimedia solutions, for the Time Life Series DVD release of "Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics." Time Life Music's package includes such rock and roll legends as the Mamas and the Papas, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Byrds, the Doors, Jackie Wilson, the Supremes, James Brown, Bo Diddley, Stevie Wonder, the 4-Tops, and the Temptations.

Imagine, for example, if EMI wanted to release Rubber Soul on DVD-Audio. They would need to remaster it to surround. With John and George gone, you’d might need to hire original producer George Martin and get Paul and Ringo in for consultations. Then you’d need an engineer/producer who knows 5.1 like Alan Parsons (who engineered Abbey Road) to oversee the surround mix. You then need to book costly time in one of the better recording studios or mastering houses to do the project and there aren’t many of these suites around the world. You can see how the costs get sky high and the logistics make the project practically impossible.

Rhino Home Video is releasing a nine-volume set of "Ed Sullivan's Rock & Roll Classics." The collection spans the entire run of "The Ed Sullivan Show" from 1948-1971 and includes performances by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Doors, Elvis Presley and many many more for a total of 144 musical highlights. The DVD version includes bonus footage of Sullivan and his wife, discographies and trivia.

The DVD set will sell for $170 while the VHS will be $130. Two single DVDs will also be released for $20 each: "Vol. 1 - Hits of 1965-1967" and "Vol. 2 - Hits of 1967 to 1970."
