А по поводу чартов, не стоит, наверное, очень уж серьезно к ним относиться. у меня есть потрясающий альбом Бич Бойз - Brother Years, так там из всего бесподобного материала, только парочка вещей в чарты пробилась. А уж что сейчас там народ слушает, не приведи Господь...

Москвичи, почему вы молчите о концертах Хампердинка в Кремле 10-11 июня? На контрамарке.ру уже продаются билеты.

Никто не молчит! Об этом я говорил ранее.

Кстати в переходах продается компактдиск с его хитами с 66 по 69 года. Там есть и release me. Я купил этот диск и не жалею.

Знаю одно: Джон Леннон терпеть не мог Э.Хампердинка за слащавость.

Шевчук, на вопрос о самом значительном событии взахлеб начинает рассказывать о поездке в Финляндию на Роллингов. Стоп - все понятно, вы производные, второй эшелон.
Наряду с великими Битлз и Ленноном существует масса интересных жанров, звезд и исполнителей. Спросите здесь авторитетного меломана - А зачем вы слушаете что-то кроме Леннона и Битлз? Неужели это интересно, тем более что их не хвалил Леннон?

Engelbert Humperdinck: More than just a name?

When Engelbert Humperdinck finally answers his cell phone, he is significantly more relaxed than his caller. It has taken three different telephone numbers and considerably more than a dozen calls to reach Humperdinck's inner sanctum--and that's for an officially sanctioned conversation.

It seems the charismatic singer with the unforgettable name has a surfeit of rogue callers. Perhaps his legion of admirers is still just too large.

"Can you call back in 15 minutes?" he asks after consultation with a female companion. "Could we make that 20?"

When we finally get talking, he's down-to-earth and approachable.

"I have to change my number at least a couple of dozen times a year," he explains over the line from Kuala Lumpur. He's there on his latest world tour, which reaches Tokyo next week. As for the calls, he points out that not all of them are well intended.

Is this the price of fame?

"Yes, that's what it's all about," he says, with a resigned chuckle.

At this point, some readers might be forgiven for not even realizing that Humperdinck was still around. After all, it's been quite some time since the British crooner's heyday in the 1960s and '70s. He might have sold millions of records and been showered in women's underwear on stage back then, but those days are long gone, aren't they? Surely he's relaxing in luxurious retirement in California, sipping cocktails by a swimming pool with just the occasional appearance in Las Vegas to break up the monotony?

Not likely. Enge--think of a shortened form of engine--is not only out and about on tour, he is also brandishing a new album, Let There Be Love. He says he is still out to give the public what they want. And the conclusion to be drawn from his latest CD is that the public wants covers.

"Apparently, the people of today don't want to hear anything brand new, they want something familiar," Humperdinck quips. "And everybody is doing covers these days, and I mean everybody, even Rod Stewart."

The fact that Stewart's extensive covering of the Great American Songbook has been shifting millions of units may well explain the enthusiasm of Humperdinck's record label to take this direction and add to the estimated 130 million records Humperdinck has already sold.

The resulting CD shows that Enge is still going strong. On Let There Be Love, not only does the cover artwork show a 69-year-old in fantastic shape, the recording reveals that he still has the range, delivery and personality to make all manner of ballads his own--even if the jury is out on some of the choices of material.

The tracks include Nat King Cole's "Let There Be Love," Bill Withers' "Just the Two of Us," Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" and Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," which Humperdinck admits was a request from his record label. He candidly acknowledges that it was his label's idea to do more covers this time round and that while he very much enjoyed doing it, he would like to balance this half and half with original numbers.

"They [the record company people] know the market. You have to go with the record company surveys that show you what the public is really looking for and go for it because they are the ones who service the album," Humperdinck says, pointing out that while covers offer a kind of nostalgia for an older generation, for a younger generation they can represent "new" material.

"But there are four brand new songs. I put all of these in my show and they go down really well. The one I think is a hit song is 'There's no Good in Goodbye,'and 'Three Words Ain't Enough' is a great song and so is 'My Confession.'"

The implication seems to be that to get the real Engelbert Humperdinck experience, you need to see him live. And his reputation for selling out gigs stretches back decades.

Undoubtedly, part of this success lies in his relationship with his fans and his uncanny ability to make people, and in particular women of a certain age, feel they are special.

"My fans are the spark plugs, they really spark everything off for me all around the world," Humperdinck says, while declining to put a figure on what he thinks the number of his fans is (8 million is a figure often referred to on the Internet). "Let's put it this way, everywhere I go, every dressing room I ever venture into is always decorated by the fans of that area with presents, flowers, all kinds of things, nice notes welcoming me. It's great."

So do female undergarments ever find their way into his dressing room decorations?

"No, no, no. They just throw them on stage," Humperdinck says. "It's only occasionally now. But it was a fad at one time, people used to do it to get recognized and I'd pick them up and comment on it and people would look at who'd thrown them on stage and so it was an attention getter for them rather than for me."

While he doesn't expect any pantie projectiles in Tokyo, he does acknowledge that the ones he occasionally sees nowadays are getting considerably smaller in size.

"If they ask me for my autograph, there's hardly any room [on them] for Engelbert Humperdinck's name."

And what a name it is. Coming from a German composer who studied under Wagner and wrote the opera Hansel and Gretel, the unlikely moniker was dreamed up by former manager Gordon Mills to relaunch the singer's promising career after a bout of tuberculosis had kept him out of the clubs for several months--or so legend has it.

If success was the goal, it worked--spectacularly--as he and stablemate Tom Jones conquered not only the late '60s European pop charts, famously keeping the Beatles at bay throughout 1967, but also the U.S. market.

"The name really did contribute to my success, but it wasn't only that. I looked at the Beatles and they all had the same hairstyle and I thought everything starts from the head so I grew my sideburns long and dyed my hair black," he says. "With a long name like Engelbert Humperdinck and a song like 'Release Me' it all went together as a hit formula, so I don't regret changing to that long difficult name. Not at all."

Talking of his image, Enge wants to set the record straight about Elvis.

"He didn't copy my image at all. The truth of the matter is this: I put my sideburns on in 1965...that's prior to Elvis, he did it in about 1972," says Humperdinck, who like Elvis was an important mainstay of Las Vegas clubs. He pinpoints the source of the confusion: "When he finally wore that famous white jumpsuit of his, an artist sketched him in it and presented it to him on a TV show...and he said, 'Hell, that's not me, that's Engelbert Humperdinck.'"

While Elvis has long gone, contemporary Tom Jones is still around--although Humperdinck hasn't seen him in 15 years. Given the chance, though, Enge says he'd "certainly" have a pint with Jones.

"I suppose we'd talk about old times," he says.

As for other recollections and confessions, Humperdinck advises readers to pick up a copy of his 2004 autobiography, although he promises to release an updated "sequel" soon. He doesn't miss the opportunity to rant, though, about the managers who have ripped him off "left, right and center" pocketing vast sums of money over the years. Get a good, honest lawyer and accountant, he advises young hitmakers.

But perhaps the best advice he can give relates to his longevity in the biz.

"Could it be that I work hard [laughs] and I try to keep my job very professional and...I've got a vast amount of people who follow me around the world?" he asks rhetorically, before explaining why he still works so hard. "The reason I go out on stage is not the money factor, although that is important. No, I think that when you've had a career that has given you a great living and a name around the world and people have bought your records and given you adoration, what I'm doing is making sure they see the face behind the person on the disc.

"I love it. This is the most important part of what I do," he gushes. "I am showbusiness from head to toe."

ХУМПЕРДИНК, ЭНГЕЛЬБЕРТ (Humperdink, Engelbert) (1854–1921), немецкий оперный композитор. Родился 1 сентября 1854 в Зигбурге близ Бонна. Учился в Кёльне и Мюнхене, путешествовал по Италии, где в 1881 встретился с Р.Вагнером и был приглашен им в Байройт. Там Хумпердинк помогал Вагнеру в подготовке к изданию партитуры Парсифаля. Учился в Испании и Германии и в 1893 поставил в Веймаре самую удачную свою оперу – Гензель и Гретель (Hnsel und Gretel, на русской дореволюционной сцене – Ваня и Маша) по мотивам сказки братьев Гримм, которая сразу же завоевала признание.

Среди сочинений Хумпердинка – музыка к целому ряду драматических пьес, в том числе к драме Рейнхардта Чудо (Das Wunder), и четыре оперы, среди которых – Королевские дети (Knigskinder). Стиль Хумпердинка, испытавший влияние Вагнера, отмечен ярким оркестровым письмом и свежестью мелодики. Умер Хумпердинк в Нойстрелице 27 сентября 1921.

Вот у него-то наш сабж и позаимствовал себе имя.

Забавно, про нелюбовь Джона к творчеству Хампердинка... Вот, что я вам скажу: если бы все его невзлюбили и обливали бы грязью, Джон был бы в первых рядах его заступников. Нрав такой, что поделать-то! А сегодня я , кстати, приобрела пластиночку, где есть все вышеперечисленные персонажи: Paul Anka, Tony Orlando, E.Humperdink, Joe Dolan, Frank Sinatra, Salvatore Adamo, Pat Boone, Tom Jones, Louis Armstrong, Charles Aznavour, Joe Dassin, Neil Sedaka, Persy Sledge, Bobby Darin, Danny Williams, Rick Nelson, Dean Martin, Yves Montand, Billy Joe Thomas и другие, уф!

В 60-е я просто обожал Хампердинка, да и все вокруг тоже, особенно девушки. Это ничуть не мешало мне одновременно любить и Beatles, и Rolling Stones, и Searchers, и Элвиса Пресли, это была разная музыка. Году к 70-му Хампердинк мне не то чтобы приелся, а просто новые его песни перестали нравится. А вот старые я с удовольстивием слушаю до сих пор. Последнюю новинку от него я слышал году в 90-м, с диска выбрал всего одну песню, но очень неплохую.
