'Ray' Tuning Up For Broadway Stage

A Broadway stage project based on the life of Ray Charles is in the works from producers Stuart Benjamin and Howard and Karen Baldwin, who produced the hit Charles biopic "Ray" starring Jamie Foxx.

The team has acquired dramatico-musical rights to the project from the Ray Charles estate and Ray Charles Enterprises. Universal Pictures and "Ray" director Taylor Hackford are not involved at this time.

The stage project will differ in scope and intent from the film. The play will span his entire career, allowing the producers to showcase Charles' lifetime repertoire of music. It also will combine performances with dramatic vignettes that will tell stories of Charles' business, political and charitable endeavors.

"This will be more of the warmth and the personality of Ray as well as some of the anecdotes and stories that weren't in the movie," Benjamin said. It also will be a more sanitized take on Charles, whose drug addictions and infidelities took center stage in the film.

"This will be a celebration of Ray, somebody I got to be very close to over the years, someone I respected and someone whose company I enjoyed," Benjamin said. "What is really in my mind is to convey some of that. As was the movie, this is an enormous responsibility. We will take our time and make sure it's done correctly."

The Baldwins were producers on "Sahara" and are working on an untitled Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey biopic. Benjamin produced both soundtrack CDs, the television special "Genius: A Night for Ray Charles" and the "Ray" DVD.

A search for playwrights is now under way.

Большое спасибо за наводку, Сергей. Вчерась купил, получил истинное У. Замечательный концерт. Очень хорошо сведён звук-панорама: мягко и цепляет. Ну, а ребяты сделали всё оч. вкусно, прекрасные выступленья. Эл Грин весьма порадовал. Преподобный стал "Учителем танцев" :))) Интересно было смотреть на реакцию публики...Билли Престон с шуткой а-ля Рэй: " в конце своего гига, типа "фсех люблю-фсех обнимаю"...

RAY CHARLES POST OFFICE TO BE DEDICATED IN LOS ANGELES

The late Genius Of Soul, Ray Charles, will soon have a Los Angeles post office named after him. California Congresswoman Diane Watson announced Wednesday that 4960 West Washington Boulevard, near the site of Charles' historic Los Angeles studios, will be officially designated as the Ray Charles Post Office Building in a special ceremony to be held August 24th at 2 p.m.

President Bush officially signed the Ray Charles post office bill into law on Tuesday, July 12th.

"Ray Charles was a giant among artistic giants," said Congresswoman Watson, who wrote the federal legislation proposing the new designation of the local postal facility. "It is my hope that the Ray Charles Post Office will be only the first of many posthumous honors for this great American treasure."

The new post office will be dedicated just a week after the August 17th groundbreaking ceremony at Charles' nearby RPM studios, which will be renovated and expanded to house a new Ray Charles Museum, set to open in 2007.

NEW RAY CHARLES DISC TO FEATURE DUETS WITH DIANA ROSS & GLADYS KNIGHT

Following the success of the late Ray Charles' multi-platinum duets collection Genius Loves Company comes a new CD titled Genius And Friends. The new collection, which will be released on September 20th, features duets with Diana Ross, Gladys Night, Patti LaBelle, Willie Nelson, and George Michael, as well as R&B stars Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Angie Stone. The disc also includes solo performances by Charles on "America The Beautiful," and "You Are My Sunshine" plus covers of John Lennon's "Imagine," and Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City." The album features duets which were newly created by adding the guest vocals to tracks Charles had previously recorded, plus outtakes from the original sessions for Genius Loves Company.

Throughout his career Ray Charles recorded many styles of music including R&B, country, and pop. Several years ago, he spoke to us and explained that for him, race played no part in creating music: "It's about music. It's not about color because music ain't got no color. There is just not much connection between the colors when it comes to music, and thank God for that."

Charles' 2004 CD Genius Loves Company, which included duets with Elton John, James Taylor, Michael McDonald and Willie Nelson, among others -- won a total of eight Grammy Awards, including Best Album, and Best Record for the song "Here We Go Again," a duet with Norah Jones.

Also being released on September 20th -- three days shy of what would've been Charles' 75th birthday -- an eight-disc boxed set containing Ray Charles' entire Atlantic Records catalog called Pure Genius --The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959).

The boxed set includes nearly nine hours of music and 165 tracks, highlighted by a disc of 27 unreleased or rare cuts plus a DVD featuring Charles' 1960 Newport Jazz Festival performance.
